trucker743 wrote: »My Friday the 13th, or how I quit worrying and learned to love analgesia! It started as I left work Friday night around 9ish. Sudden pretty-bad pain in my mid- and lower abdomen on BOTH sides. Managed the half-hour drive home, made it in the house, collapsed on the bed on my side. I can now say I’ve experienced pain at the “10” level. All I could do was groan and hold my belly. I called 911 instead of my daughter, because I knew this was beyond her. I’m glad she saw the flashing lights and came over. I was in so much pain I couldn’t answer questions. At the hospital they tried hydrocodone, they tried hydromorphone and finally fentanyl. I couldn’t, apparently, lie on my back for a ct scan. I remember nothing but 2-1/2 hours of screaming pain. I mean that quite literally. My intestine had gotten stuck in a loop of scar tissue and had died. It could have killed me. They removed about 60cm of bowel. I just was released last night. They ran THE TEST Sunday evening after a little fever and some coughing. I was put in quarantine. I still don’t have results and have to report in every 4 hours to an agency that monitors quarantine. The surgery was non-eventful, I guess. I’ve never had a bad Friday the 13th until now. I don’t NEED another bad one, ever. [\spoiler]
I am rather frail at the moment, but posting my “adventure”. No, I don’t have “it”, as far as I know now.
So sorry ... but glad they acted quickly!5 -
Beth - Thinking about you. Is there anyone where they are who might be able to help?
The neighbors who took my mother in behind the ambulance. But they're in their 70s and shouldn't be out either.
He is being admitted for a bowel obstruction and is scheduled for surgery ... waiting on a time.
Sorry to hear this too and I hope the surgery goes well.3 -
And this is similar to our Gratitude Calendar that we've done in Novembers.
Coping Calendar: Keep Calm. Stay Wise. Be Kind.
1. Make a plan to help you keep calm and stay in contact.
Part of my plan is to stay home more days each week. I'm getting stuff done, spending time with my husband, and avoiding the crowds.
Today I'm particularly happy because I've been able to spend the whole day at home getting a bit of extra rest, listening to classical music on ABC, and working on my uni homework while my husband has been busy doing stuff in the kitchen.
In a hour and a half or so, I'll go downstairs to exercise. We would go outside, but it has been a rainy day so we've been cozy inside.
2. Enjoy washing your hands. Remember all they do for you.
They do a lot of typing ...which reminds me that I should also wipe down my keyboard more regularly. But I do actually like washing my hands. With my hot flashes, and with exercise, my hands are often quite damp. Washing with soap dries them up a little.
Last weekend I also did my nails with 5 different pastel colours of gel nailpolish.

Hi Gals,
Sharon – so sorry to hear, so glad you are on the mend.
Beth – scary, and hard to be so far away. Do you or your brother have space to have them come to your home for the after surgery convalescing?
Since I am home mostly and have little work, and little money I wish the weather would at least be a bit more cheery… the high was 60 today, with clouds…
I have been pretty frugal for years, but am stepping it up. So the heater and pilot light are off that pilot light costs about $2 a month I always turn it off during the summer but this is really early. I did $11 of shopping last week and that plus what is in the fridg, freezer and pantry I think I can make last 2-3 weeks. There were no frozen veggies at the store, so most of what I bought were fresh veggies, a few for now and the balance to freeze myself. The one thing I had a craving for was refried beans, none to be found and no canned beans. I found some dry beans in the back of my cupboard – probably 10 years old, but looked fine just dry, dry, dry, I soaked a cup overnight, then in the crockpot for a whole day and are getting better… by tomorrow I should be able to make refried beans. Choices will get a bit odd, but that’s ok.
Upside of this is I can not snack, as if I do that is the items for a meal that I will not have. So without counting calories and even worrying that much, just eating what is the “assigned option” I have lost 4 lbs in the week or so I’ve been at this.
I am with Suzi Q it’s wash cloths for #1 and paper for #2.

Margaret – you have one beautiful voice
M – I went to the soup kitchen today. I was just putting one bag inside the other one. When you get there you have your temp taken (mine was 97.3), they log it and you get these gloves to wear. The one guy was saying that he was thinking that they’re going to be shutting down. Well, with people buying the grocery stores totally out, the soup kitchen relies on donations and there aren’t things to donate, closing them down wouldn’t surprise me one bit
We took the covers off the pool, washed them, put the bleach in the pool (is it ever green). So it’s started – yippee, yippee! Before that cut the grass/weeds (mostly weeds) But the bleach will help the green in the pool. Too bad we didn’t get more before this corono stuff.
Tried making chocolate pudding in the IP. We shall see how it comes out. I’ll make more yogurt tomorrow. I’ve found that cooking it during the day and letting it sit to drain in the refrig overnight seems to work best for me. If I don’t let it drain overnight, I’m too anxious to have it.
Karen VA – thanks for the map. It’s interesting….our county isn’t listed. I’m in Catawba county. West of Iredell and east of Burke.
Stopped at WM because I needed to pick up a prescription. They didn’t have any of the bread Vince will eat. You know something, I guess living in the Poconos helped me some. I learned to use the freezer and usually have one extra of the important things, so I don’t feel like I’m rushing to get anything. Right now we have a loaf of bread in the freezer. With Jess coming, I’m not sure what all she’ll want. Well, we can only have what the stores have
Working on this diamond dotz crafts. You know, if I get really bored, I’ll make one for this lady at the condo. I know I can order it online and have it shipped to my home.
Sharon – how very scary! I’m so glad you’re all right
Beth – (((HUG)))) I’m so so very sorry that you are in this predicament.
Last week (or was it two weeks ago, I think closer to two) I asked a lady to pour some ceramics and told her that I’d pick them up this weekend. I just texted her to ask her if she still wants me to come. In a sense, I hope not.
It’s just really hard for me to not be doing things. Well, so much is shut down or opening later. I guess I just want to do more but logic tells me that it’s not advisable. Glad we’re getting the pool done.
Boy, are my hands dry. Been using the lotion lots today

Oh, Beth! What an awful “rock and a hard place” situation! There must be a social worker with the hospital you can call to see if some sort of help can be given them while she’s there with him! Most hospitals allow support family members to buy food either in the cafeteria or to be sent up with patient meals. Perhaps one of their friends can drop off some clothing changes for her. The social worker may be able to assess things from within and give you a better idea what’s actually needed.

Yes, I need TP as I do not stock up. I am looking at the 1.5 rolls I have and decided I will use a washcloth (I have quite a few) for #1 and TP for the rest. Yes, TMI. But really it is up to all of us to sacrifice now.
So, for the health of the world, please stay home. There are so many more lives at stake here and remember there really is only 6 degrees of separation from anyone. Most of us in the next week or so will know someone who is a confirmed case. Within my county alone we started with 4 cases late last week and we are now up to 96 and many more are suspected.
SuziQ - our moms and some of us actually used washcloths to clean up everything that came from our lower regions when we were babies, before the days of wet-wipes and disposable diapers.
Easy enough to rinse out under hot soapy water and toss into the wash. Or even dab with a sponge and hot water/soapy rinse. Maybe I've cleaned up after dogs for too long, lol. The "EEUUWW" feeling is long gone, .
Much better than using paper towels and napkins - I've seen this actually recommended (not by any one official). I think many septic lines and septic tanks are going to have problems dealing with tissue that isn't "septic safe". Plumbers and roto-rooter are considered "essential personnel".
Lanette
We have a bidet. I am so thankful for it, especially now. I still need to keep my boys stocked in TP, but at least we do have a back up plan for everyone if it comes to that. (Although, I shiver to think of my boys using my bathroom!)

I'm up and cleaning up the guest side of the house. Friends just left for the airport. Their original flights both cancelled yesterday so they rebooked. Those flights cancelled too. So far the third set of flights is on time and still scheduled to fly. They are leaving hours earlier than they wanted to, but if they can get home without driving cross country, it will be worth it.
Have a great Saturday Ladies!

Beth - So sorry to hear about your dad. I hope the hospital can work out an arrangement for your mom. Hopefully, your brother is able to go and assist them even if he is 7 hours away which is probably now 6 hours since most should be off of the road.
Prayers to you and your family.3 -
Okie - I shiver at the thought of being in an airport or a plane. I think I would have opted for the long drive. But do realize not everyone is cut out for that type of road trip.3

SuziQ- You comments regarding Charlie touched me. I have been wondering what my husband would be doing during this. I believe he would be the sort that would keep running out to the stores and would have been difficult to control. While I thought I was used to being alone the idea of not going out at all is strange. We will be getting most of the staff deployed to home this week, which is strange for a government organization. We will have shifts set up to go into office to picked up documents from those needing services. I will go in to get documents signed, etc. but times will be limited. We are going to be communicating via skype meetings, etc. so there will be multiple contacts.
Sharon-so sorry to read of your surgery. Hope you are gaining strength daily.
Beth-prayers for mom and dad.
Well, was able to get some sleep last night. Had an emotional outburst in meeting with my main managers. Someone mentioned something a staff member brought up that was really silly and I just exploded. Told everyone what I was worried about is how many of our people would be dead at the end of this. Have several staff who are at risk due to multiple health issues. I have worked with some of them for over 25 years. I had my rant, got the emotions out, and then we went back to work. Trying to figure out how to get services out to the public that are needed during all of this is a bit overwhelming but we are working through it. It won't be perfect but it will work. I think it will, strangely, also help us learn how to do things better.
Going to spend some time today cleaning house (this week was go to work, come home, do some more for work, leave everything at home where it landed). Have to get area set up to bring home work computer and monitor. I will be one who has total system access. Will also set up my home gym stuff. Really need to get a workout in. While it will be cool today, it is to be sunny and a long walk outside is called for.
Take care of yourselves all-looks like this will be a wild ride.

Hello everyone.
There is no stress avoiding it staying home. We are surrounding by our own germs and families. Yes it stressful being locked up. But so many of us are blessed to have home gyms, internet connections, Netflix, cable, books, hobbies, etc. It is up to us to stop this thing.
I almost was going to go out to the farmer's market today as I no longer have any fresh greens and thought to myself......you have fresh carrots, onions, potatoes, beets, and radishes, canned green beans, canned corn, canned beans, rice, eggs, pasta, canned tomatoes, spices and condiments, frozen fruit, tuna, canned chicken, baking products, and other miscellany around the house. I will have to get creative over the coming days but do have enough to keep me alive and well-fed.
Am I low on TP. Yes. I have a workaround. Flea, lucky you with the bidet - my shower is right next to my toilet so that will be my other workaround.
From what all of the experts are saying right now this thing is too new. We may never be able to build an immunity to it, but if we are able to do so the minimum time-frame for herd immunity will be two years.
It is time for us to break out those to do lists which seem to never quite get done and start hitting it. Keeping ourselves busy is one way to to keep ourselves distracted.
I am going a little stir crazy living alone and staying locked down. My gas tank is full so I will at some point this weekend go out for a little drive around town just to feel like I am out and about. I will not stop anywhere because I want to be part of the solution.
Some of my weekend plans updating my emergency list to a pandemic, getting out in the garden to weed and cut things back, bill planning, finishing up my taxes, going through at least two drawers to organize and/or downsize, and cleaning/wiping down all of the pictures on the walls.
We can do this, we are strong, we are resourceful, we are smart, and we are part of the solution.
Hugs to all and prayers for those in need.

Ginny in Ohio My Machatainista Vicky is an old warrior who has dealt with multiple sclerosis for half her life. She is about 70 now. Some days when you ask her how she's doing, she'll say, "Oh, it's one of my FOGgy days. I'm a little MeSsy." Meaning her MS is flaring. She sees each flare as an "F-ing Opportunity for Growth. (FOG) I love her. She refuses to own a wheelchair. When she needs one she rents it.
Remind me what your government organization is in charge of? Busy transition for you. FOGgy days, as Vicky would say.

Pip I've been thinking about you & Kirby, as well as the others who have a vulnerable spouse. Do you have the type of job that can be done remotely? I know you are still biking in to work each day & just wondered.4
-
Ginny - Big hug to you and all of the planning it has taken to keep services going for those in need. I cannot imagine the stress you and your team have been under. You have done a tremendous job getting things organized so folks can be remote and scheduling pick up times.
It does take some time for everyone to get in the groove of remote working. It sounds like you have it under control. I have found having at least one weekly team meeting via WebEx is a great way in making sure everyone feels connected and on task. Since this is so new I would almost suggest a daily call. Even if there is no work to discuss the meetings are a way for people to have some type of outlet.
And, I so agree with you. Efficiencies and process improvement will definitely be an upside as will emergency planning.
As for Charlie. He was an English professor and was used to a lot of downtime. He used to follow my lead when it came to anything requiring a plan and we were very good at entertaining ourselves. As I mentioned there have been quite a few hurricanes we lived through so we were quite used to living without electricity, electronic devices, etc.. He was a comedian of sorts. Oh, the laughs. The hardest part of this for me is I am a care giver and being without a partner and childless makes me feel a little out of balance because I only have myself to worry about and that is simply not my nature.
For signatures you may want to look in to Adobe. They have a product that will encrypt signatures. It may be difficult since I know most government entities love their paper. But, it may be something to look in to for the future.
Enjoy your weekend and be sure to get some well-deserved R&R!

We ventured out today on what might be one of our last forays into public shopping areas given that Tassie numbers have jumped from 10-16 in the last 24 hours or so.
Mostly I wanted to get a couple things for potentially working from home and my husband wanted some garden stuff like soil, pots, seeds, etc. We also needed batteries to ensure our Zwift connections keep going.
Fortunately, most people were taking the social distancing thing seriously. This is from Australia Health.

I wish I could just relax and enjoy this time at home but I'm very busy with my university work.
I read of people being bored and I can hardly imagine!! If I actually get on top of my uni work, there are about 101 household things that need doing before I can even get to the stuff I'd like to do.
Maybe if this does go on for 12-18 months like they suggest, I'll get on top of everything.

Believe it or not people are still hoarding it here. As soon as it is on the shelf it is gone. We cannot place an online order for it as it shows as out of stock. This is true for Amazon too (which I do not support).
I am conserving it as best as I can, hence the #1 and the rest use plan right now. I figure by the end of next week things will even out and the crazy TP hoarders will start worrying about something else. Heck, if there is no food there will be no use for the TP - LOL!

Michelle I don’t know how “shelter-in-place” states view soup kitchens, probably like restaurants everything must be takeout, no eating in.
Margaret, THANK YOU for the simple gifts. What a lovely voice you have.
Lanette, love your ideas about the checks. You are so right we must be mindful of the tax implications. Sometimes the government issues such stimulus checks as a kind of “advance tax refund” that you have to pay back the next April. :{
Annie ((hugs)) hope your writing helps to ease your stress.
The very happiest of anniversaries to you and your hubs, Katla. 50 years? You are both golden!
Heather, milk is still out of stock here, tp and wipes are rationed, and you’re right, the liquor dispensaries are running low…
Sharon (((gentle hugs held extra long))) Thankful for your first responders and your hospital care givers. Truly terrifying.
Cathy agree about the under-reporting. Our state recently got an influx of test kits, but is now short of test swabs and bags. Needs must prioritize “everyone” to “everyone displaying symptoms” even though we know how contagious the asymptomatic folk are.
Carol praying your son finds new opportunities soon.
Beth praying for your father, mother, son and you. Scary scary time.
Ginny believe you are right, this will help us learn how to do things better.
Like Kylia, Machka and SuziQ have suggested, need to use this time to tackle the many undone ‘To Do’s. And reconnect with Joe.
