Coronavirus prep

Once while working a young doctor came down the ward with a tube of KY jelly in his hand, he said, Don't say anything. I replied, I thought you wanted to be a slippery customer.................1

Peanut butter is the only thing I'd panic-buy.4

I saw a lady and man stocking up like crazy on canned goods when I was at the store this past weekend. Not sure if it was for coronavirus. Knock on wood, but so far Michigan hasn't had any confirmed cases yet, so nobody has been emptying out shelves. I'm pretty bad, I don't really prepare well because Northern Michigan so rarely has events that cause people to empty shelves. Knock on wood.
I'm still waiting to see if the music group I'm seeing in Texas in late April is going to cancel their concert because of it. They've just left Korea and are in Europe for the first leg of the tour. Most of the fans are worried most for the Paris concert, since the outbreak is much worse there. Who knows what it'll be like when April rolls around though.0 -

This is not to panic anyone or anything, but we've only in the past week gotten an effective COVID 19 test to all the states. I'm trying to remember the source. I think it was propublica. Also on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, if you're into that.
I'm not super worried about it, but then again, people come into work sick all the time to save their leave, and it's contagious before you show symptoms and it's probably airborne transmission so...
I have one of those at work and just want to deck them!0 -
I braved our Costco. I was going to wait until next week but I am down to my last bag of seafood and I eat a lot of it. It was more of a madhouse than it should have been on a Thurs afternoon during a workday. I did buy an extra bag of coffee and extra chicken than I intended on buying when I walked in. I was not worried about CV but I did not want to have to face that nonsense again too soon. I overhead people talking about how smart they were to be buying multiple huge things of toilet paper and paper towels. One elderly woman was complaining about her buggy which was overflowing. She said she had no idea how she was going to load, unload, and take in everything she had purchased.
Oh I did buy one disaster item. A flat of gatorade. This weekend it will be headed to Nashville for tornado victims.

You couldn't pay me to get on a cruise ship right now:

I wish I would've known about the virus last year when I booked my cruise lol Oh well. As long as I wash my hands constantly and use hand sanitizer I should be alright. Norwegian Cruise Line has been keeping us pretty informed of all of the steps they're taking in response to the virus. They're not messing around lol0 -

Not to fearmonger, but the air filtration systems are also part of the issue on cruise ships. Air goes from cabin to cabin, with outside air being mixed with inside air. The filters aren't fine enough to pick up the virus (unlike planes, which recirculate air, but have filters than can keep the virus out of the air).

In other news. I did not have to turn to a life of crime. The shops still had TP on stock.
(I am worried about the disease. I currently intern at a geriatric ward in a hospital with a stop on the train line from Milan... Mind you, I'm worried about the patients and my parents. I'm young and recovered from my pneumonia this winter. So it shouldn't hit me too hard. But those patients wouldn't stand a chance against something like that and some visitors are really clueless.)14 -

Definitely good to know! Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about that now lol I can't cancel my reservation and receive a refund because I'm sailing in 8 days, plus I don't meet their criteria for being eligible for a refund.
I'm just going to cough as loud as possible to try and keep people away from me as much as possible lol4 -

You could pay me. I bet cruise prices are going to come way down. More cruising for me! Also it might be nice if the ship is not full capacity for a change.
What is not being covered is the large number of ships sailing and doing what they do that have no reported problems as of yet. If the number of ships keeps growing then I might take pause but not now.7 -
Welp it’s in my state now. I’m in Memphis and the person who has it is from Williamson county but went through the airport in Nashville with it.5

That's a good point. We're really bad at evaluating "routine" risks against novel ones. Newer stuff always seems scarier than the risk of dying in a car wreck on the way to a grocery store, which is something that can happen but we've just kind of compartmentalized as a risk of modern life.7 -

I am fairly certain it is here too. It is just a matter of time before it is confirmed.3 -

Might not be a good plan if you end up stuck out at see quarantined because the officials think you have it. If you do it before you get on the ship they will send you home.

I'm in the UK, there's a case in a town 30 miles away, people at work live in that town.
One chap just back from a wonderful ski holiday in Northern Italy is self isolating.
There seems to be lots in the shops still, am not specifically stocking up, I get more worried about weather events. We have enough stuff lurking in the cupboard for at least a week.
We were looking at potential holiday destinations last night, there's a lot more in our price range now 😆. Both myself and partner are in high risk environments, so best bet is common sense precautions and to crack on.4 -

Yes, the owner of the retreat center in Costa Rico where I stayed some years back used to mention this before briefing new guests on the dangers that would be novel to city dwellers: snakes, scorpions, poisonous caterpillars, etc.
I got stung by a scorpion. Freaked me out because once when stung by wasps I ended up in Urgent Care and needed a shot, and here the nearest known source of a shot was three hours away, by bus. Perhaps the freakout provided the adrenaline I needed to not need a shot4 -

She will be right. If checked by the doctor there would be no temperature and you can simply say that something went down the wrong way! I have just returned from overseas and while in transit it was amazing how much extra room a cough from someone I was travelling with gave.0 -

I lived on one for 8 months as a crew member back in my younger years. I've considered going as a passenger, but I really enjoy feet on the ground for longer periods of time when I'm travelling. I suspect I drank enough booze to prevent any illness taking hold.5
