Kylia - Hugs to you and your family. It’s such a difficult time and now it’s even harder.
I have been reading along but hadn’t had much to contribute.
I had a few books that I enjoyed as a younger girl.
L.M. Montgomery - The Story Girl - my grandmother read this to me and I searched for years trying to find a copy. Finally found one about 3 years ago.
Judy Blume - Are you There God? I loved this book.
I had an old reader that was my Dad’s called All Sails Set, there was a story in it call Circumstances Alter Carla. I found this reader at an antique store last year and almost bought it again.
When I was 12 or so I snuck one of my Aunt’s Danielle Steel books, The Ring. From that time on romance novels had me hooked. Now I like a little mystery with my romance and I really enjoy biographies of people I like.
I am still working away and we still have managed to keep the virus out of the home. I am so grateful to still be working. DH should have been going back to work for the season yesterday, but now the City has stayed that they won’t be calling anyone back this year.
I am not concerned right now as the government is subsidizing wages but I don’t know what will happen in September or through the Winter again.
I realized that the month has just flown by and I hadn’t thought about my Mom’s birthday which is Friday or Mother’s Day. Our postal service is very slow right now and I was concerned that I couldn’t get a card to her in time from here for Mother’s Day so I contacted an old friend who makes cards and she is mailing a card to my Mom and Rodger’s Mom for me. I will set up a FaceTime for my Mom’s birthday. The nursing home is still not accepting packages so I can’t send a gift.
Hope you are all staying safe and healthy

Wow, that's not right that your mom's nursing home is not accepting packages Tracey. It's hard enough to be alone with no visits, but a care package could restore morale and provide some semblance of closeness to family. Are they not even allowing cards and letters? My heart is breaking for you and her.
Kylia, my heart and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I wish there were words to make it all better. But I know better. Hold onto each other. Cry with your DH, praying for better days ahead.4 -

They are accepting cards and letters, but it’s not just my Mom’s home, she is in New Brunswick and that is provincial law there right now. I work in one in Alberta and it’s the same rules here. We can accept parcels from Amazon but we can’t receive anything from families homes.
We are doing everything humanly possible to keep these residents safe and I have to think my Mom’s is doing the same. Although NB is 10 days straight with no new cases and as of yesterday only 4 active cases remaining. They had no deaths and had 118 confirmed cases so far. Hopefully that trend continues. Alberta is not faring as well.

Tracey - well done for keeping the virus out. Our homes have not done well. I'm sure there will be an enquiry in due course. The government definitely fell down there.
Rita - How miserable for you. Hard not to dwell on things like that as you wish you get hold if the b......s and ....... . Glad nothing precious was stolen.
Karen - What is now the prognosis on Josephine? What a spirit!
Hoping for a Zoom with my girlfriends this afternoon.

@AMBER i think it's completely crazy to protest against lockdown. I have no affinity with those who do so, but i can also understand the fear of repression. It would be hard to buy clothes without trying. Ok for shoes if with familiar brands. Here they have contactless paying for less than 30 euros. you hover your credit card over the machine and nothing else to do. do you have that in the usa? Good luck to movie theatres. With the rise of netflix and amazon etc, they were already in a steep descent.
@Rebecca Chicken IS versatile. I bought some roast chicken and guinea fowl the 1st weeks but saw the sellers were sans mask, and i stopped. Do you throw the bones and bits in a pot and make soup with the end? Ha ha that is one sweet trail (mix). That's great that you can have sweets and not eat too much of them. i've had better and worse periods but i definitely tend to eat them more quickly than i like to. Glad you are enjoying eating so much and guilt free.
@KATLA do the dear get high eating the edibles? my sister lives in deer country and has to have very high and solid fence to have a good veggie garden (8 foot high chain link w posts planted deep into the ground)
@Meg wow gyms reopening again already. wow.
@SuzyQ i love the cat pic!
@Kylia i'm so sorry about your DH's mom's situation.
@Kim glad you are feeling better
-Here "small" MUSEUMS are supposed to open May 11 (if all goes as planned) but not "big" ones. i think most are "big" ones in Paris. This might be good news for galleries which are certainly more "small".
-At present i'm getting 100% dark CHOCOLATE bar (100g) and i keep in in the freezer to not eat it much. it works ok. I like it w a bit of tahini.
- I think i forgot to say i CUT MY OWN hair yesterday morning. I was already way overdue for a cut before the confinement. I couldn't take it any more. My hair was medium long style and had become long and i needed a change. (split ends, unhealthy straggle) i wanted it a little longer but it's ok. i looked quickly at a tutorial and snip snip and cut off the extra long bits and there we go. not best cut of the century but i don't regret.
-I was able to correct papers online a bit better than some times today.
It's totally weird to get up work, work, not go out at all. Now 2h class coming up.
Will go out for a walk after class after 3pm. Very bad night's sleep.

Bananas- I had a guinea fowl in my delivery and roasted it with fennel, carrot and onion. We also had cabbage with it. Heaven! Fennel is my new best friend. I have frozen the rest I took off the bone for a future dish, as we just ate the breasts, and made a great stock with the bones and spare veg. I have an IP which makes life a lot easier, as I imagine you wouldn't want to stink out a small apartment with a stock pot. That stock is now frozen in two containers. I was thinking of making an Asian style soup, but I'm not sure because DH is a bit limited on spicing. I like it burning!
Amber - I'm in agreement with you that a 'proper' meal adds hugely to life's enjoyment. It is like date night! I rarely don't eat a proper dinner, but if, for some scheduling reason, I can't, then snacking doesn't psychologically do it for me and I end up eating more, or even horribly bingeing. Last night's main course was only 380 calories, but it felt like a feast. We are lucky that we both love heaps of veg.
Tonight is roasted Mediterranean vegetables with feta. Brown rice. I like to make a small tahini, yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice sauce to dip the veg on the side. And peri peri for me too.

Rita - so sorry about the break-in at the storage unit! My sister's entire neighborhood got scrawled on night before last by kids spraying graffiti, including her car, as well as others, houses, RVs, fences, barns, and she's feeling pretty targeted as well. I have little sympathy for thieves and destructive delinquents--pretty much a waste of skin in my opinion.
Kylia - my heart goes out to your husband and to you. I can't believe you still have the Red Fairy book!
Thank you to whoever mentioned the Nancy Drew books--I read every one I could get my hands on! Plus all the Hardy Boys mysteries, as soon as I found those.
Also all of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women series.
In my mid-teens, a couple of coffee table books fascinated me, I read them until the covers fell off--one was Bloodletters and Badmen, by Jay Robert Nash, and the other was the same huge size book, all about the Hollywood stars from the beginning to the 1950s or so. Both were probably from the mail-order book club my mother belonged to at the time.
Also in my mid-teens, my father also went through an occult phase (don't ask, long story), so The Occult by Colin Wilson was one of many I read regarding Aleister Crowley, Madame Blavatsky, and so on. Not exactly comfort reading, but still, that's what my memory is dredging up.
More frustrations at work... so I'll spoiler it. Not the galloping never-get-overs, but not good timing.So... finished a complex grant that I've been working on for two weeks. It's due next Monday. Worked with all the directors, membership, program and volunteer, to come up with something that would work for the girls who can be reached through online means, plus printed packets for the girls who don't have ready access to the Internet in the more rural areas.
Sent the final numbers out to the directors, and one tells me she wasn't aware the cost of the mailing would be so high, and it wasn't in her expense budget. These budgets were set last year in August and September. Of course this is not in her budget. If we win it, it's being funded by a major funder because of the coronavirus pandemic, which did not exist last September.
What I've finally figured out is that the directors have been told that the only money they can spend in this fiscal year is money in the expense budget that has been approved by the board. It doesn't matter how many times I say, "But I'm also asking for funding to support the project," which will also bump up the revenue side, if it isn't in the EXPENSE budget for this year, I can't apply for it because they can't spend the money.
The shortsightedness of this is breathtaking. And absolutely hamstrings me for applying for any new funding that will show up in the same year. I can only apply for next year. This was not good to hear after hearing that 99% of everything I've already applied for is futile as well. (See last spoiler.)
My husband says, "Stop trying to get anything new for this year, then." Perhaps he's right. And perhaps this only upsets me so much because I'm seeing it as one last stab at fixing a year that feels wasted and useless, when we're just over halfway through.
Love y'all,
Later,
Lisa

I am a wreck because my husband is a mess. His mom is on a fast downward spiral. She hasn't waken up since early yesterday. Warm thoughts from my circle of lived ones keeping us going. It seems strange to me that while her life is ending, everyday life just plods along....dishes need done, pets need fed, laundry needs done.... sorry....You all really have helped!
Red fairy book- I own! A little worse for wear, but well read. My favorite growing up were Nancy Drew. They were a treat. My brother, sister, and I read anything we could get our hands on. We read the childrens part of the encyclopedias until we wore the pages out. We loved several sets of fairy tale and read aloud stories. I have a few old 1920-1940 books that I pull out occasionally. One is my Uncle's first grade reader. He died from a gunshot wound playing cowboys and Indians when he was just 7. Not really sure how I got possession of his book, but glad I did. I also have my grandmother and mother's bibles. Apparently I am the book keeper. I need to read more....
I am exhausted. Heading to bed. Love you ladies!

my thoughts are with you2 -
Kylia - My thoughts are with you. It sounds as if you MIL is going out in the best possible way, in the best place. I hope that is a comfort, though your husband sounds devastated. I used to be very active in raising money for hospices and hope to end up in one if I really need it one day. My beloved friend died there last year and I am confident she had the best possible care. Of course, the end of life is hardest for relatives and friends and I am thinking of your family.

Lisa thank you for grant ing my request. Surprised at your boss’ boss, expected better from her. And frankly, implying your next few months’ efforts will be futile does not model the determined spirit I associate with GS. All I can think is that they are just worn down by the pandemic and its associated restrictions. Pfaugh. Thank goodness you know that you can’t get grants if you don’t apply, and have the grit to keep on keepin’ on. Brava! do you need the mailing $$ to apply for the grant? If not, if you’d only need the mailing $$ IF the grant is approved, would that satisfy the directors and the board? If you do, how much is needed?
Meg gyms reopening? Are there distance or number of people restrictions?
Annie Bejeweled Classic and 1010! on my iphone, but only while waiting for something. Can’t sit at my laptop without at least one round each of Spider and FreeCell solitaires.

Michele your back pain is worrisome. Have you had it checked out? Could a PT suggest some exercises/stretches to ease the pain?

Last work stuff, I promise:Sorry about wading through my work stuff with y'all - but really appreciate the fact that you're here, because it is helping me work through it. Finally figured out after my last two posts that I became far too emotionally invested in this one grant in order to try to rescue what feels like my failure for the remainder of the year. Not a good idea, that, not least because it's probably got less than a ten percent chance of winning, if that.
Regarding the budget issues, I've believed all my life that I can buck the system--but it's possible that it's finally time to stop. This CEO has been here eight years, and it's very much the culture she's developed. I need to either work within it or leave. From past experience, attempting to change these kind of ingrained behaviors that come from far above your own level are like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer--because it feels so good when you stop doing that.
I think I've finally stopped. And the writing helps. As Oldster said: "Writing alters our perception of reality and amends our mental equilibrium."
Thanks for listening.

Karen - thank you, dear heart, but not necessary. We're talking about $48,000 - not exactly pocket change. And honestly, would not change the budget discussion even a little bit. That expense is still not included in the budget, as that budget was set last August. It was apparently chiseled into stone tablets. See my last post.
Thank you so much for the thought, though.4 -

Hi Gals,
Lisa – hang in, all I can tell you is my camp non-profit is stupid in it’s own way too! We have housing for 120 people and there are two groups – fire/emt/police and our local battered women and child shelter who need housing, the first responders to have a place away from family to keep their family safe and the shelter to get mom’s and kids out of bad situations. Both willing to pay, but not at the rental rate which includes full overhead and profit. BUT neither group wants all the extra’s that come with full overhead. And our board will not approve either because it’s not enough money. Driving us lower levels of the non-profit batty! The non management staff has been picketing – virtually. It’s pretty funny to see how a bunch of tech literate 20 year olds picket. They hacked the zoom board meeting and popped in and out with hand made signs… I think we’ll wear them down.

Kim - thank you, dear. Old white men, yes, but honestly, any entrenched administration is hard to de-trench. Glad to see you have your mojo back too! Mine is coming out from the under couch, where I kicked it a while back. Feels like the rainclouds have moved out, honestly. Feel like an idiot for dripping emotion all over y'all, but again, it helped me adjust my thinking.

Nanner - Thank you for all the flower pics and info. That area next to the sea front is definitely a hot, dry desert. I can't imagine much else growing there!!!
It's part of a neglected garden I run around, on a raised terrace. Just didn't know the name. My grandmother taught me the names of flowers, so I am pretty good at most things.

Enjoyed my Zoom with 'the girls'. We chatted away for 45 mins. I'm the only one without a second home to fret about in these times. Don't want one either!
Lifts the spirits to see them, though my difficult friend is getting restless and she is the one most at risk from comorbidities.
I'm just keeping on keeping on. Still happy, but I'm thinking of ways of seeing the kids at a distance before they go back to school. Parents willing.

Hello here is a decent article on the situation in France. In addition the French government has been rather dishonest and constantly changing it's tune. It says that they(we) have seriously lacked tests and masks, and that some towns and regions are taking steps that the centralized government hasn't done. For example they were only testing 1200 people a day when the pandemic was clearly full blown. They say 3000 but it's not what they were saying back then. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/29/world/europe/coronavirus-france-masks.html1
