Today's run was a nice 10K. It was a slightly warmer than yesterday, but also slightly less humid so it seemed about the same and was a hot, humid summer-like run. But it was nice. I started out a little slow, but settled into a nice pace. My pace of 10:32 was a little slower than yesterday's 10;18, but any time I run an easy run under 11:00 I feel pretty good about it. I figure my pace will start slowing as we head into summer, so I'm enjoying these "fast" runs while they last.

I killed it today. I was feeling really great this morning and decided to PUSH it. I was able to keep my heart rate below 160, except for at the very end and when my children tried to hold convos with me. I was able to really regulate my breath, heart rate, and pace. It felt so good! We shall see how my legs feel tomorrow. I want to try some 5.5 mph for shorter periods, probably repeat my last run/walk where I ran at that pace.

It’s hard to keep up with this board. But really enjoyed All the shoe sharing. I need a new pair. I have a pair of Nikezooms structure 19 that have been my favorite shoes I’ve ever owned(I’ve tried ASICS, Saucony, new balance, and I forget the other brand. I also have gel sof sole inserts. They both are well loved and need replacing if my mileage is going to keep increasing.

Oh and my watch doesn’t have the calibrate feature at the end of my run. So I’m just recording my treadmill distance.3

@shanaber - agreed about the zero drop making a big difference. I thought I had adequately put in miles and gotten used to them before doing the Spartan race but apparently not. I don't really like the wide fit of the toe box either.
Speaking of, @Teresa502 just fyi, some people find the Salomans very narrow. They are definitely more of a narrow toe box but it doesn't bother me.

Beautiful sunny but chilly day. I just want to be warm! We're working on it I guess? It was around 48 degrees when I ran early afternoon. I did 3 miles on the track as a warm-up. Then met up with my trainer and a couple of people for a sprint workout - same as we have done a few weeks now: 50 m sprints x 6, then 6 jump squats and a 50 m sprint x 3, 6 plyo pushups and 50 m sprint x 3, and 6 skaters plus 50 m sprint x 3. Hey, I'm getting better at the plyo pushups (pushup with a handclap) and was able to do them not from my knees for the first time.
After that we did a Spartan workout - 20 minutes of sandbag carry w/ lunges, bucket carry, and bear crawls back and forth with 5 burpees in between each out and back. That's gonna hurt later.
I did a 1 mile cooldown on the track after.6 -
@kgirlhart That's a great "easy" pace! Glad you had a nice run.
@robynmac5819 Sounds like you are doing great. My Garmin doesn't have the "save and calibrate" button either. I always go by the treadmill for distance, but use the Garmin for HR and calories burned.

Sooo. The plan to give my new shoes a week before deciding whether to keep them or not went the way of the wind today. I did another treadmill session...25 minutes easy. The shoes felt okay during the 5 minute warm-up walk, but the minute I started running, I started to feel it. My left knee was hurting, then my shins chimed in, and the calf where I tore the muscle a few years back started hurting. Three minutes in, I gave up and changed into my old shoes. I was able to finish the run with no pains. So, I have a feeling I really do have over pronation and need the support shoes. The change in midsole drop probably just added to the issues. So, bad news is that I am going to send my shoes back. Good news @Tramboman is that you will get more seductively posed shoe porn when my new shoes arrive. I am just going to go back to the Brooks Adrenaline, since I know they work for me. I do have to get the newer model though, as all of the old ones I can find are not in my size.
Ran 2 miles, easy pace, and walked 1 mile.
News on my cousin, if you are interested, in the spoiler below.After much finagling, the lawyer finally went over and got the power of attorney signed today. He had to watch my cousin sign through the glass door going to the outside, but it worked. Now, to get copies and that will be all set.
He is doing a lot better. Now there may be a problem in getting him approved for long term residency. He is legally blind and can't hear well, but, since he is somewhat mobile, he doesn't automatically qualify. He tells me he doesn't feel it would be safe for him to go back to his apartment/live by himself anymore. The only other option I know of is Assisted Living, which would be perfect for him. However, he can't afford it with his income and I'm pretty sure medicaid will NOT help pay for that like it does for nursing home care. I'm still looking into that . The government website is unclear to me. The lady at the nursing home is still trying to get him approved, but she says it is a much longer process and they only approve like 1,000 a year in the entire state. I'm still hopeful he can stay there, but am trying to at least know what the other options are if he can't.
Medicaid is also dragging their heels. We don't know if he is going to be approved for that either. You can only have like $2300 in the bank and less than $2000 in property to qualify. He was about $100 over on the money...that is until this month when he received his $1200 stimulus check. Now he's way over. So, who knows. If he isn't approved, he is going to be billed for almost $200 a day for every day he has been in the nursing home past the 20 days Medicare covers. That will quickly put him at zero money in the bank. Then I don't know if you have to start the process all over or what.
I'm trying to not stress over any of this until necessary and trying to word it to him in such a way that he isn't stressed. And then, of course, there is replacing the things he lost. I have most of that done - TN ID, Medicare card, and ATM card. On to his cell phone tomorrow.
I would appreciate any ideas on places he might be able to go where he has assistance with everyday care, if he isn't approved for the nursing home.4 -
@quilteryoyo I know the stimulus money wasn't supposed to count against anyone on assistance. No idea why it'd count applying. Unfortunately (I think) Medicare does work where you have to expend all of your assets and resources before you qualify. So, yes I think you start over when he's exhausted his monies. Sounds like you have some questions to ask the powers that be. Maybe they can be helpful and forthcoming with info.
I don't have any experience so I'm just trying to brainstorm. I don't know if assisted living has a sliding scale maybe? I'd maybe make calls to various places and see if they know a place that fits his needs. Is he a disabled vet by chance? Veterans home here is swanky. Low rent place/ roommate with home health/ meals on wheels? Poor guy.
Eta here there is a day center for older folks. They come get them, feed them, do stuff or just watch TV and take them home.. although, it sounds like he's destined for a home, so maybe better now than later?

So ...slow and steady... getting back to the pavement ... did 7 km tonight
So total 20 km out of 70 km for May
I was training for a 10 km race last spring and I learned two big lessons ... 1. I can run 15-18 but that is my body limit and 2 I like to run to my own pace and racing is not for me

FYI - I did do the race. It was my first and worst one all in one ... it was super hot and humid and I just got off my first night shift and ended up with a heat stroke 🥵
So no more racing for me
I love to run 12km seems to be my good distance but slow and relaxing 😎 that’s the way I like it
Also I’m so proud of people who work so hard for. Race I did the training and it’s no picnic !

Thanks @Elise4270 . When I get a chance, I am going to try to call some of the assisted living facilities in the area and see what they say. Before he went into the nursing home, he was living in low income housing. It's pretty much a dump. I doubt if he would want a roommate. He is a veteran, but his disability is not service related, so not sure he could live in a VA home. If he did, he'd have to move, because our closest VA only has a short term live in program for those with mental health issues. (We do have a great VA hospital - Mountain Home. It's the best!) Thanks for the ideas!0

I agree. We did clinical this last semester at one and it was not service related from one fella I spoke to. I do think that there maybe an expense/rent, if you will, if there is a partial disability. I was really impressed with the one here. And he’d be among other vets.

Unexpected rest day today... I did all my usual race day routine, looked at the weather and it said 98% chance of thunderstorms. I will run in rain, but not lightning, so we decided to chill and run tomorrow. And then the thunderstorms never happened, but by then it was too late to go out unless we wanted to run in the dark! It was a beautiful day. I didn’t even know what to do with myself, I’m so used to having some sort of workout planned. I ended up sitting outside watching titmice, cardinals, and woodpeckers come and go at the bird feeder.
My knee still isn’t perfect so maybe this is fate and the extra day will end up being a good thing.
Also sighted - not a bird!
This is the mother raccoon that is living in our storage shed. She came out, looked at me, and went on her way without a care. My feet are resting on the chair you can see in the picture so she’s a few feet away.3 -
Lots of snowy cold -or$ warmer but lightning weather lately. Combined with work crazy, meant that there wasn’t much running lately. I did do well at still doing strength training and Romwod stuffs. But that meant I had more weights in a row than I have done in a while. So, the DOMS were real. Today, timing worked to avoid cold and lightning. But I think I was still feeling Sunday’s squats and other leg day antics... and then yesterday involved deadlifts. Thus, Romwod was not sufficient stretchy time.
Today’s run hurt. Everything was tight. It was also very slow for how long the run intervals were. I was very slow, but given how tight and short my stride was, it was to be expected. And I did get a little run in, at least. But it went from slow and tight, to essentially being pretty gimpy in the end.
1.8 today = 17.2 ish?/ 50
Bit behind schedule due to weather, but hopefully I can catch it up.
Along those lines.... I’m considering being fiscally irresponsible, but supporting operation anti fluffy.... those of you with dreadmills/satan’s sidewalks/ treadmills.... even if they are terrible objects to try to move.
*or* those of you who know things about them... what do you have? What do you like? What would you recommend? Anything I should look for or pay attention to in my research? Or try to avoid?

Thoughts in no order:
Watch the used market. You can find dreadmills that have only been places for prior owners to hang clothes on for years for a great deal some times.
Look for ones with the ability to change the incline. You want them to go to at least 10% even if you never plan to run that much.
Look for ones that let you set a program to run like "run 2 miles @ speed/incline then speed up for 5 miles and slow back down for 2" or what ever
Pay attention to max speed. You may never run 10mph, but you will want one that goes that high incase you do sprints or intervals on it
Pay attention to max weight, the more it can take the better built it probably is
Pay attention to the base warranty offering. It is an indication of how long they expect the unit to last. The longer the better.
Pay attention to how big the thing is and how easily/well it folds up and consider your space when you put it in. Most dreadmills are very large and heavy. You will want to run in a room where you have good cross ventilation (or at least fans) and maybe a TV or other entertainment.
Get one of those rubber mats they make for dreadmills to put under it to protect your floor
That is my first set of thoughts...4 -

A nice sunny run this morning. Fresh and not too warm. Felt like my breathing and stride was good and when I got home I was delighted to see it was much faster than I have been for a while. I was well under an 11 minute mile average and every km (don’t ask me why my watch gives me laps in kilometres when it is set to miles!) was under 7m, even the one going up a massive hill!

@quilteryoyo I’m sorry about the shoes I went through with my grandmother what you are going through with your cousin, nothing worse than the government red tape, it must be especially hard now with so many not working. With my grandmother they just took the money she had for her nursing home care, maybe they will do that too. They took every penny she got from SS and other monies she was getting and that went to the nursing home. What I found out though was they had to keep that money in an account and they had to pay her debt with it, like funeral expenses after she passed. When she started to go downhill (per nursing home) I used to her money to prepay her funeral and she was buried with my grandfather so she already owned the plot. The funeral director who was a friend said find out how much money she has, she had like $6,000 there and he sent me a bill for $6200 after the funeral so I was able to get her money back into the family and I gave it to my aunt and uncles. Anyway sorry went off track there. How would he do with a nurse coming in a few days a week, or going to an adult day care type situation? I’m sorry you are going through this but thankful he has you to advocate for him. – started reading the other comments. Check with the VA anyway, my uncle was a Marine, okay he would kill me, he IS a Marine and at least in Florida they take really good care of him with medical issues.
@rheddmobile – that’s a big one there, too cute. Sounds like a nice rest day, hope it helped the knee.
@hanlonsk I don’t own one of those torture devices but someone on a running site I below asked for recommendations and someone who just brought one, who was anal at checking them out gave advice like about length of the deck, belts, incline/decline all types of good things. Let me see if I can find the post and copy the suggestions here. Crap I would have never thought about

I just went through this myself. I researched for about 6 months before finally purchasing one about 3 weeks ago. One of the most important things to keep in mind when buying a treadmill is the size of the run deck. If it's too narrow or too short, it will be difficult to run/walk on. The best range is from 20 inches wide to 60 inches long. Next most important is the motor size. For running, choose 3.0 CHP or higher. You can get away with a smaller motor for walking and casual jogging, but I personally wouldn't go any lower. Another important feature is the amount of weight the treadmill you are looking at can handle. Some cheaper options can only handle up to 180 pounds. If you are a serious runner, or will be using the mill several times a week, I would go with one that handles heavier runners to ensure the deck and motor last longer. Another important feature (to me) was the fact that some treadmills come with their own app that you have to pay for. Peloton and Nordictrack and two that require a membership and it's not cheap. If you want more workout options, then that is the way to go. If you don't care about having a million options, you can choose a treadmill that is bluetooth enabled and you can use your own app and even stream music etc. Personal note: I use Zwift for my bike trainer and with the blue tooth enabled treadmill I just bought, I can now use my Zwift app for my treadmill. Another feature that was important to me was having a data screen that was in a separate place from the spot that would hold my tablet/iphone. The treadmill I have now has the tablet holder on top of the data screen so I have to move my Kindle if I want to see how I'm doing. So, that may not matter to others, but it was important to me. Another thing that I found important was being able to fold up the treadmill when I'm done. Space saving is important b/c I have a very small home. Another thing I found important was automatic incline and decline (not having to do it manually). Lastly, I wanted one with a built in fan. This is the one I ended up buying if you are interested in seeing after I gave you my requirements. And, in case you're interested, I currently run on a Nordictrack. It's about 15 years old and the motor has started overheating when I get to mile 3 so that is why I had to get a new one. I would recommend a Nordictrack except for the fact of having to buy into the ifit app. I did not want to have to keep paying money into something I had already spent so much money on especially since I have the Zwift Run app already.

@hanlonsk Another good suggestion is pay attention to motor size. If you are going to be running on it frequently you want a motor with 2.5 to 3.0 CHP, also you need a bigger motor depending on weight as well.

I got in an 8.3 mile run before work this morning. A friend met me at 6:00 am and did 5 of them with me before she had to head off to get ready for work. The temp was a nice 49F but humidity was 97% no wonder my hair was so sweaty!
@hanlonsk - If you can actually try to run on the treadmill models that you are considering I would recommend that. My first TM lasted for years before it finally died, It was a ProForm brand. I wasn't going to replace it but a friend said that I could have hers so now I have a Nordictrack. It seems jerky when I run on it - not smooth at all.

I went with something with higher to be safe. Mine has somewhere around 3.75 or 3.85 but I don’t remember. It’s a commercial 1750 from 2018.
I also agree that Nordic track ifit is a giant scam, it’s somewhere around 300$ a year or at least last time I looked at the email. I canceled it after the free year I received when I bought it. But I never use preprogrammed runs, I’ve always been a manual run person on whatever machine I run on. It would be nice if mine would recognize my watch though so I can keep track of heart rate on the machine instead of looking down at my watch. It’ll only recognize the heart rate strap that came with it. That honestly bothers me the most. I’ll probably not get a Nordic Track next time because of this.

I had a really good run this morning. I was planning to take it pretty easy, and it was hot and humid already at 6 am so it was a little rough getting started. But once I got going I felt really good. My second mile was a bit faster than the first and so I decided what the heck I would try for negative splits. And I thought I got them too. But then I realized later that mile 2 was a little faster than mile 3. But still I had 10:27, 10:11, 10:14, 9:50, 9:45 and I even had 8:52 for the last .3 mile. I ran 5.3 miles with an average pace of 10:01. So I'm still counting it as a negative split run. There are a lot of people who are faster, but those are really good times for me and I felt really good about it.
I was so sweaty when I got home it was ridiculous. But I felt really good and really accomplished. Then I had a hard time getting my Gatorade bottle opened. It seems like lately they have been really hard to open. I had one a couple of weeks ago that I was never able to open. I had to get my husband to open it for me and I got a blister on my thumb. Today I managed to get it opened on my own, but I ended up with a blister on my finger. Am I the only person who gets blisters from Gatorade bottles?
