Pip! ... someone as coordinated as you are on a bike fell walking!?! So sorry for your injuries ...
Tonya ... welcome! Very sorry for your loss...
Michele ... to be honest, the idea of people returning food items is kinda gross to me. I understand returning a spoiled or expired item, but that's about it.
Machka ... glad to see you posting again. Without question, your fatigue is a delayed stress response. Listen to your body's signals.

1948Peachy wrote: »Question: Are any of you wiping down your grocery type purchases when you get them home? My husband has been very, very good about doing this.
Carol in GA
No.
The grocery pickers & packers (probably just one person) will have put my order together in the morning. From then, individual items don't get touched because the bags are in crates. When the order arrives early in the evening, the delivery driver doesn't touch our individual items ... he brings the crates to the door and we take the bags out of the crates.
Hours pass between the time someone touches our food and the time we get it....Here’s another thing: I need M&M’s for PJ’s cake. Normally, what I would have done is buy two packages and if I didn’t need the second one, on my next trip to that store I would have returned it. But the stores aren’t taking returns. So…if when I decorate the cake today I find that I need more M&M’s, I’m going to have to go back to the store. So in my case the stores are encouraging people to go out....
I’m ok w/ stores not taking returns. I think it discourages hoarders if they realize they’ll have to live with their excessive purchases. I’m so clueless, I didn’t even know you could return things to grocery stores, so it’s a relief to me to know that nothing I buy at present has spent time in someone else’s home.
Sandra - from the central coast of CA.
I agree!
My grocery store doesn't take returns now unless the item is faulty and I've only returned something once, years ago. I'm not sure what their return policy was prior to COVID-19, but I do know that we were delivered a bag of goods in error a year or so ago, rang them up and told them, and were told to just keep them.
They say,
"If you have purchased additional items, we encourage you to share with those in need, in particular, the elderly, disabled and most vulnerable."
At the best of times, I don't like the idea that my food might have spent time in someone else's home.

M – I’m so sorry you’re still being hounded. No, that wasn’t an app, it was an article in our local paper. Liked the fencing cartoon. How true!
Michele NCI was just reading an article about the proposed things different businesses will be doing. It says that Verizon will have this scanner so that their employee never has to touch the item. Is that saying that multiple customers will be touching the scanner? I would think if that was so that it would be best for one person (the employee) to touch the scanner.
Is it an app?
Machka in Oz
No, I meant the scanner ... is the scanner an app?

COVID-19
Have you been following https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ ?
Meanwhile in Tassie we've had no new cases for 4 days in a row. But I'm hoping that they don't start opening things up too quickly. We're still quite shut down at this point, and I like that.
I think the plan is to open the parks and reserves in about mid-May as a first step. That would be all right. There's a reserve right near me I wouldn't mind getting into for some trail walking and running.

Heather – what an absolutely cute note!
Sandra – fortunately, I had enough M&M’s for the cake and the rest Vince can have. I put them in an M&M cookie jar – out of sight. When you return something to a store, they have to throw it out. They can’t take the chance of someone perhaps putting something in the food/whatever and then the next person gets sick. This is just spoilage for the store.
Carol GA – I don’t wipe down every item I bring home. When I go to any store that has the disinfecting wipes (and almost all of them do), I take some extra and besides wiping down the cart, I keep my hands on the wipes. Then when I touch something, I immediately wipe my hands. Then after I put away the groceries, I wash my hands
Amber – I was about to suggest you google the name of the magazine, but I see you got it all straightened out. Good for you!
Beth – I have even seen people returning a case of water/whatever where they drank one can and it wasn’t what they thought. That I could never do. Like I said, the store can’t resell anything that has gone out its door.
I was reading that this guy who won a Pulitzer about viruses has said (according to statistics) that a lock down does more harm than good. By being with other people, you are more likely to get the virus and therefore make antibodies. The article didn’t go into people who are extra sensitive (I thought of you Barbie) Who knows?
Beth – when my son graduated college, he didn’t want to take part in the ceremony. I just told him for the amount of money we spent, if I have to I’ll walk him across that stage. I just couldn’t understand his reluctance to go.
M – the food is thrown out, it is not sold to you. To be honest, I don’t know if the scanner is an app or not. I was thinking (and I could be wrong) that it was the type of scanner like you see at a food store. Never thought of it being a phone app since this is a phone company.

Looks like it is probably the 'My Verizon' app ... they've got a very awkward website to navigate, but it does appear that one of the features of the 'My Verizon' app is barcode scanning.
We've got barcode scanning here in MFP too, so it has been around a while ... and it would be nice to see barcode scanner app used more often.
I have a dream app I'd like to see developed ...
One where you could take a photo of your meal or scan it in some way, and it would give you the nutritional information, calories, etc.
For it to work, you'd need a way of measuring the food ... weight, preferably, but perhaps also quantity. And there would also have to be a way of identifying the food. A number of things to work out.
Machka in Oz3 -
The fact that businesses are open, doesn't mean that it is wise for me to go. I have taken shelter at home seriously which means that I go out only for essentials and as infrequently as possible. It is amazing how many things I can do without. Planning carefully means that I don't suddenly remember something I should have gotten and feel like I have to go out again.
Barbie in NW WA
Absolutely!
We go out for quiet walks just about every day, but really limit our shopping etc where there is contact with people.

If this is the “new normal,’ I will be delighted when we are all able to return to the "old normal." :ohwell:
Katla in Beautiful NW Oregon
The thing with "normal" is that once we've moved to a "new normal" we rarely go back to an "old normal".
I'm hoping that this will be enough to shake the world up to consider doing things differently and thinking about things differently.
Elsewhere I commented on my vision for offices and mentioned one large meeting room, a few smaller meeting rooms (depending on the size of the organisation), a few cubicles for quiet work, and otherwise working from home.
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/04/will-coronavirus-end-the-open-office-floor-plan/
Someone commented that the idea of being crammed into small meeting rooms didn't appeal, so I suggested booths and another person commented about an internet cafe look ... in other words, everyone sitting in their booths facing the wall.
That wasn't what I was thinking. I was thinking like this ...
Or this, but not necessarily the middle section ...
I like thinking about different ways we could do things to make the world healthier. COVID-19 has had a big impact, but flus have been getting worse too ... and lots of scientists etc. say that COVID-19 is just the beginning. There will be more.
So what are some things we can do?
Well, the barcode app I mentioned in the post above is one idea. Different office setups is another idea. Different ways of doing university and school in general ... that's an area that really needs a shake-up!
Machka in Oz3 -
Michele- Yeah the newspaper company sells all names of magazines under 1 hat. When I googled the Oprah wasn’t any in our area. You wouldn’t believe how many places I called to find who they used. Yes the schools sell it for the newspaper too so might be how they got it. Neighbor still won’t get it so Hubby finally yelled you getting your bleep 🤬 or what off my porch? They answered back No bleep 🤬. So hubby said it’s my wife’s then .They both slammed the door. Hubby handed me Oprah. What am I going to do with Oprah I don’t even watch her show let alone read her magazine! Her y Martha Stewart don’t care for their stuff. Chef Emiril y Chef Gordon now theirs a magazine I’d like to have! I’m more into cooking ,decorating,y gardening ones that are plain y simple not about makeup 💄y girly junk. I also love fishing magazines. Good thing I called the magazine company they know the situation should fix it now. If I was paying for something not getting it I’d cancel or call to ask where it is! Lazy folks I guess could care less.

Update on the Fire Cider - I'm ready to make another batch, this time will put in lots more garlic, more red pepper, and maybe some already ground horseradish and fresh turmeric instead of the powder if I can find some.
The cider I decanted a few days ago is pretty good, I stirred in some honey and I've been using it to thin store-bought Litehouse Caesar Caesar salad dressing I use which is always super thick. Could probably just whisk a bit into plain old mayo and call it good. The garlic is still pretty potent tho. Yes!!
Rebecca - love the cute Athena photos! Do you find the turmeric in your broth settles?
Karen in VA - thank you for sharing that story about your dad.
Barbara - so sorry to hear about your dance instructor.
Glitter-wise, it will be interesting to see what happens as the different states open up various businesses. Hopefully the results will be better than expected, especially with summer coming on, so the younger healthy folks (under 60) can get on with their lives.
OK, dogs are giving me "the look". Back later - have a fabulous day!

Yes I did notice that, but I don't skim the fat off, so the broth in the mason jars I put them in, its like thin jello from the fridge. I shake them to get the fat off from the top, and turmeric from the bottom. Then pour into ice cube trays, with saran wrap over them. I think before they have a chance to settle again, they freeze.
Pretty huh!
I get my Athena fix weekly from son, and so we all are ☺!

Barbara the Southern Oregon coastie: I am so sorry for the loss of your instructor.
1948 Peachy: I do not wipe down the packaging on foods at the grocery store. In the fresh veggie aisles, I buy romaine lettuce that is already packaged. Green onions are bundled but not packaged so I put them in one of the clear plastic bags at the veggie aisle. I’m not a fan of iceberg lettuce but DH likes it.
Machka: I prefer it if my food hasn’t spent time in someone else’s bags or their homes. :noway: On another topic, I do not have Verizon but my iphone has barcode scanning as a function. Thank you for posting “Protect yourself and others from getting sick.” I planned to share it but didn't succeed. Luckily, you did succeed.

Rebecca - Oh Miss Athena! What a little sweetheart she is.
Barbara - I am sorry to hear about your friend.
Evelyn - “took my life in my hands” I had to do that yesterday as well. I have been mostly impressed with stores and people but yesterday it was as if there wasn’t a problem at all in the world. I was not comfortable and found it very stressful.
Karen in VA - thank you for sharing the story of your Dad.
My Dad and I never really got along until I was a teenager. In fairness to my Dad he worked hard at his full time job and then most nights would go work on someone’s stove, cupboards, house, plumbing whatever he could do to earn a little money. When I was reading my Mom’s diaries last week I literally burst out laughing as she had written “Lorne took Tracey out for supper at Pizza Delight tonight”. Anyone reading it would think it was a normal everyday occurrence. However, this was a huge deal in my life. I had decided to quit school (I was in grade 10) Dad came home from work and before he could even set his bucket on the counter Mom tells him I’m quitting school. He tells me to get my coat and boots on and I’m going with him. I thought I had done it this time and he was going to take me out back and get rid of me. He took me to my favourite restaurant and talked to me for three hours. He told me why it was important to him that I stay in school and how he had to quit school in grade 7. It was the first time my Dad ever talked to me like an adult and we became friends that night. He passed in December 2012 and I miss him everyday.
Tonya - sorry for your loss.
Carol - I’m sorry your BnL is expecting that if you. Both the home that I work in and the home that my mom is in is not allowing any drop offs. We bought treats for the residents through our suppliers so they could still have treats.
I don’t wipe everything down that comes into my house. I am following the standards set out my our health department for our LTC facilities and we don’t have to do it there so I see no need to do it at home.
Beth - I am envious of people with nice weather as well. I woke to snow on the car again this morning. It all melted by afternoon, but I’ve had enough of it.
Machka - New Brunswick has reached 16 days with no new cases, 0 deaths and all 118 have recovered. Alberta is still a gong show. New Brunswick is not opening things up very quickly and are being very careful. Alberta is opening up and planning on having retail and hairdressers operational on May 14th. I am very nervous about this.
A history lesson I learned was that NB was also the best run province for the Spanish flu.
Well it is past my bedtime, I have spent the last couple of hours watching Dateline that I recorded on Friday and catching up with all of you.
Today it was decided that we’ll start having outdoor visits on Thursday to meet the net Order by our Chief Medical Officer. It has taken a lot of planning and we only pray we are doing everything we can to keep the residents safe. I think if I was given the opportunity to see my Mom right now I would decline. It doesn’t look like I’ll have that opportunity until next year though. NB is not going to open it’s borders to international or interprovincial until herd immunity or vaccination. I was supposed to go home in September. As it stands I would need to self isolate for 14 days is I went and it’s hard to visit family doing that.
Anyhow, have a lovely day tomorrow.
Tracey in Edmonton5 -
Tracey - It's great to have a date for things you remember so vividly, but can't remember exactly when. Your dad sounds like a great guy who really loved you.
On rereading my diaries for my memoir I found out that my dad had his big car accident on February 24th 1964. I was 14. I remember the occasion really well, but wouldn't have been able to place it exactly. He had a coughing fit, agd 43, and drove into a ditch, flipping the car right over. He survived, despite no seat belts in those days, but the cough finally killed him 28 years later.
Sorry about your snow. We had the sunniest April ever, (plus the wettest February ). May is proving to be more mixed. We are supposed to get rain today.

Barbie “get a human they said…” that cat’s expression made me laugh out loud!
Machka thanks for checking in. ((hugs)) for the hard to take news about your husband’s injury. Sorry to hear these assessments aren’t yet enough to get the clueless RTW people to get off your backs. The options are expensive and time-consuming? Does that mean lawyers? “Fencing”
Heather I really wish Amazon.US would offer the AF red wine you like. None of the ones I’ve tried were palatable in the least. the gratitude journals and the cards. “…all the better for being a chosen love.” Truer words never spoken. :
Katla Wednesday I ordered take out from “Fat Irish Pub and Kitchen”. Called it in. Parked and called to say “I’m here.” They allow one person in at a time. When it was my turn, I was standing in the pub waiting for our food, and looked around at how inviting the pub was, comfy seats by a fireplace, gleaming tap handles. All I wanted to do was to sit down and have a pint and a chat with a friend.
Karen in VA that view of Mt. Shasta from the 22ft airstream (complete with goat) reminded me that when Joe and I were courting the view from his back door was different every weekend, sometimes the Pacific at Pigeon Point, sometimes the pines and mesquite in the Western Sierras, yup. He lived in a camper on his Ford pickup The odd random fact about your Dad and your ex cracked me up! A sign?
Lisa “…harder to argue with someone’s identification than someone’s actions.” Brilliant! Also what you said about a vaccine. Levi and Kelsey!
Welcome @BeUncommon and ((hugs)) for your loss, Tonya. Don’t worry about reading every post, just drop in and read/respond to what sparks you. Randie’s eyes are stunning!
SuziQ that looks like a brunch I’d enjoy, and I don’t usually like omelets or eggs in any fashion. “… tip of the iceberg” “Namaske”
Rita pretty sure that yellow flowering shrub in front of the A&W is Scotch Broom https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytisus_scoparius . Amazing pic of the yellow spotted lizard. Had I seen his tale, I’d have thought “Sssnake!!!” and levitated right out of there. Gorgeous sunset pic.
Flea hope this “passes” quickly and you’re feeling better soon.
Kim I am impressed that you are able to dig out Scotch Broom. Do you use a jackhammer? The roots here are so tightly entrenched I’ve given up and just clip the stems as close to the ground as I can.
Rebecca, O Athena Rose! The innocence peeking through the spaghetti.
Julie congratulations on your qualification! Sending good vibes for Wednesday’s CT scan. Hoping for good answer, easily remedied.
Pip OWW! Dang that uneven sidewalk. Fooey!
Barbie thanks for the coconut peanut sauce chicken recipe, sounds yummy!
Ginny so thankful Lucy showed up. Hoping this experience strongly discourages her from further outings.
Michele Happy Birthday PJ!!!
Margaret how scary the scammer was able to mimic your friend’s gransdon’s voice.
Welcome @sndral Sandra from the central coast of CA. Your area is/was one of my faves when we lived in the Bay Area.
Carol sorry to hear your BnL is unable to understand the COVID-19 restrictions. One of my dear friends just moved her demented mother up here to a care facility to be closer and more involved in her care. Now she can’t help feed her or take her out and the mother is declining rapidly. Very sad.
Beth would coq au vin tenderize the tough chicken breasts?
Tracey loved hearing about your Dad taking you to Pizza Delight instead of taking you out back and “getting rid of” you. What a precious memory.

Karen: I too had a good relationship with my dad, we shared the same sense of humour, I can remember laughing with dad at Monty Pythons Flying Circus on TV, my mum didn't get it at all and couldn't understand how we found it funny. He was definitely the fun parent, and I have lots of happy memories.

Flea: Hope you are feeling better.

Barbara: Sorry about the loss of your dance teacher, must have been a shock.
Michele: The cake looks yummy, save a slice for me (That's my trouble, can't resist cake!)
Looks like it will be a sunny day today, it was cold this morning when we took Leah for a walk, a light frost would you believe. I should be able to wash my sheets and get them outside to dry with a bit of luck.
The dentist called me yesterday to cancel my appointment, they had already emailed me to tell me that they are only open for emergencies so I kind of expected my appointment to be delayed until the end of lockdown.
I'm a bit behind, over 5 pages to catch up on

Ginny : Yeay Lucy came back I bet you were relieved. It's always a worry when our cats don't come in on an evening. Our male Logan didn't come home for his supper a few nights ago and we were a little concerned (knowing how much he loves his food ) We had a few anxious moments the next morning when still no sign of him, but then he came strutting through the cat flap and went straight to his bowl! You can almost imagine the cartoon 'Simons Cat' where he's pointing to his mouth - meow feed me. Glad Lucy was safe and sound after her little adventure.

Viv UK: Sorry you got your dental appointment cancelled. I follow a very loose flexible daily schedule. Having a routine doesn’t appeal, as it has very negative connotations from when I was a teacher and my day was ruled by the bell 😂 I loved my job, but boy that bell was the bane of my life!! 😂
No definitely plans today, but so many options. The sun is shining, so there will be garden time and a walk in there somewhere! 😂

I'm enjoying the dad stories. Tracy, your story about the evening you and your dad became friends is so heartwarming.
My dad worked really hard, and long hours - he left the house around 7 in the morning, and would be home for dinner at 6:30pm, sometimes heading back to the hospital for evening rounds. He had Sundays and Wednesdays off. He was an introvert, and his den was a man cave that we were all a bit timid to enter, though the door was almost always open, except for the rare occasions he was talking to a patient or a consultant on the phone. We didn't actually spend that much time together - half an hour for breakfast at the bakery a few times a year, a 5 minute talk at the breakfast table early in the morning…but the time I spent with him was important/memorable/quality time, so occupies a large space in my memory bank.
My dad was a chauvinist (without being a boor), but it did mean that he did not budget for cars & insurance for my sister & me, but did for my brothers, and although he did pay for the 2 years my sister went to college, once I was married, he did not pay for anything for me. So at the age of 18, I had to sell my horse because I couldn't afford the paddock rent, figure out with my 19-year-old husband how we were going to share our one car to get both of us to work, etc., and when, a year later, we were stationed in Norfolk, VA (Navy), I found a part-time job with The Virginian-Pilot to pay for college tuition. My mother was upset with my dad for not paying for my college, but he had made it clear that once married, he expected my husband to provide for me, so I didn't expect him to pay for anything. Years later, though, he loaned me money for a down payment on our townhouse and for a new roof, and he forgave the loan. After he died, my mom needed some money, so I paid the loan back with interest, and it made me feel so good to hear the relief in her voice when she called to thank me. I silently thanked my dad for instilling in me that my parents owed me nothing once I was married, because I always had in my mind that I owed them money, and it made it a no-brainer to repay it with interest when I saw my mom in need. The fact that it was a "loan payback", therefore an odd amount, & I included the calculations with my check to her, made it much easier for her to accept the money.
It was a fraction of the amount of life insurance she left me & my brothers when she died…

I might be the only one on this thread that washes my groceries off! - I do it because the virus can live for hours on slick or smooth surfaces, like plastic, shiny cardboard, metal, and fruit skins (bananas, blueberries, apples). Not very long on porous or rough surfaces, like avocado or cantaloupe. I take an old cottage cheese container (with a lid) full of soapy water & a washcloth in the car, and as I load the groceries into the car, I quickly wipe them down first. I also wipe my door handles; and phone, keys, credit card, & hands after I am back in the car and have removed my mask. When I get home, I leave any unwashed produce that doesn't need to be refrigerated (avocados, bananas, melon) in my garage on a little makeshift table. As I bring produce into the house, I wash/rinse the surface of the item before I peel or cut it. Maybe it's not necessary. It seems prudent to me, and is a minor inconvenience.
My friend Rebecca & her husband Dino have 5 children, a nanny, and almost always house guests, so they always look like they are hoarding when they go to the store. Sometimes people glare at her so she feels like she has to explain that there are 10 people living at their house. It's too much stuff to wipe down. She sprays a cloud of Lysol over the whole batch while it's still in the car, before bringing it in to the house.

Morning ladies sunny day here. I have read all your stories and loving pics, jokes and memories. Brain not active today so no replies.
Told you my son promised me ‘supplies’ well yesterday a big box arrived, when I opened it it contained 24 bottles of tonic water. Said to DH ‘well got my eye wiped tonic but no gin’ messaged son to say tonic arrived and thanks he sent back to say gin on the way. Smiles again and effusive thanks and hearts LOL
Have put my lamb kleftiko in slow cooker, not sure how it will turn out DH says he will eat it and love it. Not sure if that’s a compliment or not. I am more critical of my cooking (or lack of) skills. Will let you know how it goes,
DH Does the shopping and we don’t wipe stuff down, each to his own. We are all different which makes this group so wonderful.
Stay safe and have a good day

Wiping down? I do wipe the large plastic containers of milk from our local newsagents, especially the handles. For deliveries, I leave them sitting about for a couple of days. Tins, packets, are put away and not touched for ages. Fresh fruit is washed,. Veg are cooked and hands washed after prep and I make sure I wash my hands if I pick anything up from the outside, including letters and bills, which I have left lying anyway.
Kate UK - Amazon is strictly rationing us for our Pernod. I am now very well stocked with tea bags and coffee from them. I think we will get well into the autumn.
Sea bass tonight, with lovely garlicky haricot beans. Broccoli.
No new cases overnight locally.
Rebecca - forgot to say how much I loved the spaghetti pics. Wonderful!
