Some of the nosey and curious folks among us might like to watch my elder son's latest video which is about Italian army ration packs. He's done reviews of several countries and this was definitely the worst food by miles! What makes it fun is he us doing it with his partner's daughter, and it is really quite amusing. <3
His series is AATV on YouTube and this one is called Italian ration packs. I know bananas watched one once. :D
Stopped me from writing though. >:)

    Joyful June Calendar ...

    ry9ezclaeo4g.png
    https://www.actionforhappiness.org/joyful-june

    1. Look for what's good ... lots of things!!

    Cycling outside
    Rhody
    Jam

Things I've liked since being at home from the end of March ...

Being home all day with my husband. I've got a better understanding of how his day goes.
Spending time with Rhody, getting to know him and getting him settled into our home.
Being able to go outside to walk, run or cycle in daylight, despite the fact that the daylight hours are getting shorter.
Having the energy to exercise regularly.
Seeing more people outside exercising. :)
Being able to sleep at least half an hour more each night than I was.
Being able to go for a nap in the afternoon occasionally.
Not having to spend 9-10 hours a week commuting!!!
Spending my days with a 180° view of the bay and trees and outside instead of a wall.
Being in an environment that rarely gives me sore, itchy eyes, sore throat, cough, and the sneezes.
Being able to clean this and that.
    Wearing casual, comfy clothes.
Not having as much stuff vying for my time.
More time to work on my two courses at uni.
Working remotely at my own pace ... which might lead to continued remote work ... maybe ... hopefully!
Being able to attend church online.
Feeling much more relaxed and less stressed!

Just to name a few. :)

    2. Reframe a worry and try to find a positive ...

    A worry?
Well, one of my many worries is that I won't pass my courses. So I'll use that as motivation to start studying for my final exam tonight!! :)

    3. Think of 3 Things to be Grateful For

    The COVID-19 shutdown.
    Working from home.
    Rhody.
I could go on and on!

    4. Show Appreciation to Those Who are Helping Others

I think of people like Rori, Tracey, Allie and the others here who are caregivers and especially caregivers to those with brain-related issues.

Also, co-incidentally, June 2 was Thank A First Responder day. My husband and I have been fortunate to be able to thank those who have helped him. Wonderful people!

    5. Smile and be friendly, even when you're social distancing.

That's something I've really enjoyed about all this. When I'm out walking, running or cycling, we exchange waves, nods and smiles with other people. It's nice. :) We can still be friendly, even with a road in between us.

    6. Notice the upsides during the lockdown, however small.

There are so many upsides!! See the list I made for June 1 above!

    7. Find a joyful way to be physically active (indoors or out)

For me, being active is joyful. I love being active.

I love walking, running, hiking, cycling, canoeing, rowing, splashing around in water (my version of swimming), cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. etc. Give me an individual or partner activity (preferably not a group activity) and I'll most likely try it. I've given body boarding a try. I've given both individual and dual kayaking a try, and tennis, badminton, golf ... and I've got archery and dance on my list.

As I mentioned I am studying for my final exam. The course is about the interaction between technology and humans, and this actually ties into the lecture I'm currently watching (I'm watching the Q&A section after the lecture right now) as well as the talks I watched earlier today in that technology taking something away from our sense of place.

The talks have hinted at it, but haven't come right out and said it ... balance. I like technology. I like being able to go online to work, to attend university, to communicate with people. But I also like setting it aside for periods of time, going outside and doing something.

    8. Write a letter to thank someone for what they did.

I'm not one for writing letters anymore. I used to have a set of penpals and used to spend quite a bit of time writing, writing and writing but I stopped doing that in my late 20s. Now if I write, it's by email.

However, I did thank my husband for Thursday when I wrote my exam. He was very quiet!

    9. Find the joy in music today: sing, play, dance or listen.

I have ABC Classic FM on during the day and that has been great! I love having that sort of music on in the background when I work, and my husband and I are both also enjoying the small bit of commentary explaining some of the background to the pieces and bringing them to life. :)

If I have to go back to work at the office, I'm going to have to figure out how to "listen live" there.

    10. Take a photo of something that brings you joy and share it.

Rhody, relaxing in one of his favourite spots!!
    qovm73ztsv7a.png

    11. Say positive things in your conversations with others today.

On Thursday the 11th, there wasn't much conversation. Most of my time was spent studying, then doing my exam, then going into a semi-vegetative state. But I'm usually pretty positive with my husband. :)

And I hope you all have a great day today!! :)

    12. Make a plan with friends to do something fun together.

Um ... even if we're starting to be allowed to do that, we're not doing that. We like the shutdown, staying away from people, staying home most of the time, and not socialising.

But if all goes well, we'll get outside for a bicycle ride tomorrow.

I was thinking of cycling or running today but I'm just really, really tired.

    13. Appreciate the joy of nature and the beauty in the world around

Always do! And thankfully I live in a beautiful place.
Tasmania in the Winter of 2020: https://www.flickr.com/photos/machka-bb/albums/72157714538003193
    ewzx3tdui6q2.png

    14. Do three things to bring joy to other people today

Took my husband and I for a bicycle ride. :)

Took my husband and I for a bit of a drive in the country ... checking out a possible cycling route and an area that we hadn't really ventured into before. I'm not sure how it will work for cycling, but it was interesting to see something a little bit different.

Told my husband we could eat cake for breakfast?!? He made a white cake so we had it with my apple jam and whipped cream. :)

    15. Rediscover a fun childhood activity that you can do today.
    16. Ask a loved one what they feel grateful for at the moment.
    17. Be kind to you. Treat yourself the way you would treat a friend.

A fun childhood activity would be cycling. :) I have been riding a bicycle since I was 6 years old ... or earlier if you count my tricycle.
    h57gadmlpkz0.png

    Grateful for Rhody!

And I find it difficult to take care of myself when I've got so much to do.

    2020 Goals

It is difficult to make goals because I'm not sure what's going to happen one day to the next. I plan, God laughs ... or something like that. The last couple years have been a lesson in patience and flexibility and giving up a lot of what I would like to do in the interests of what needs to be done.

However, I do have some goals I'd like to accomplish, if possible ...

How to Set SMART Goals for 2020
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
    https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/smart-goal-setting

Interestingly, he talks about 7 significant areas ...

Financial Goals: Start saving for retirement, get out of debt, or use a monthly zero-based budget.
Spiritual Goals: Pick up a new devotional, start a daily journal, or plug in to a group at your church.
Fitness Goals: Hit the gym more often, take the stairs, and remember to eat your veggies.
Educational Goals: Go back to finish your degree, get your MBA, or read a good book every month.
Family Goals: Plan one-on-one dates with your kids, have a standing date night with your spouse, or make it a point to call your mom and dad on Sunday nights.
Career Goals: Work toward a promotion or raise, learn something new about your line of work, or polish up and send out resumés if you’re looking for a new career path.
Social Goals: Say yes when someone invites you out to lunch or a social gathering—or, for some of us, say no more often.

    I've modified this slightly ...

Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order.

Spiritual Goals -- I'd like to start attending church a bit more regularly. I'll also include relaxation and recreation in here. Down time. I get very little of that at the moment and need more. For me that might be sleep and photography. :)

Fitness Goals -- Exercise, Eating, Sleeping -- Working up to running 5 km at least a couple times a month. Working up to cycling 50 km at least once a month.

Educational Goals -- Uni! I would like to finish my Master's degree in 2020.

Family/Medical Goals -- Husband -- Never-ending stream of medical appointments + projects with 2 or 3 different organisations. And me! A goal is to get me into healthy shape again!

Career Goals -- One of the main things my area is planning to work on is streamlining the processes a bit. Meanwhile I need to learn a lot more SQL and as much about what 2 different people I work/worked with did. I'm also on the board of two organisations now. Both interest me a lot, but I'm also hoping that taking on leadership roles might help advance my career a little.

Social Goals -- Cycling Club. I've made a detailed list of what I need to do, which helps.
-- My Personal Website -- I have started working on this. I'd post it here, but not sure if I can: machka . net This has a social aspect in that we go to Wordpress meetings now and then.

'Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order.'

"My Love List" ... about getting affairs in order ...
    http://ssandifer.com/MyLoveList2015.pdf

Also, from a USA perspective: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/getting-your-affairs-order

And from an Australian perspective: https://www.agedcare101.com.au/aged-care/get-set/“putting-your-affairs-order” and https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/life-events-and-you/life-events/money-musts-before-you-die and https://yourlifeassist.com.au/information-assistance/put-your-affairs-in-order/

Just a little bit of background ... in March 2018 I was suddenly thrown into the position of not knowing if my husband was going to live or die when he had a workplace accident which resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury, and if he lived, not knowing whether he'd ever return to a place where he could recognise what was going on around him and be able to talk, make decisions, etc.

When I was with my first husband, I handled everything ... but I didn't mind a bit when my current husband handled everything. It was a break for me. Until all of a sudden I didn't know what bills needed to be paid, or how to pay them ... and I discovered I didn't have access to all the accounts ... and that if he died without a will, I could potentially lose half of our money to his previous family ...

I spent weeks digging through files on his computers and paper files, and going to banks, and ringing banks etc. etc. trying to put it all together.

I kept thinking ... "they never mention this on TV murder mystery shows when someone dies. Usually the surviving family appears mildly upset and then seems to carry on with their lives. They don't show the surviving wife weeping over a file box because she can't find information and is coming close to having the power turned off or losing the house because the rent isn't paid."

So, now that my husband can participate again (not 100% but better than expected), we are working on getting things in order. And I worry about what would happen to him if I passed away.

Make things easier on yourselves by ...

-- making sure all affairs are in order. 2 names on all accounts, enduring power of attorney, bills, wills, taxes, paperwork, whatever it takes.

-- making sure you're fit and healthy. Being fit and healthy improves the odds. Also could you actually support and lower your partner to the ground, should he/she collapse? Do you know first aid?

-- making sure your house well set up. Are there stairs? Tight corners? Difficult showers?

-- having a look at options around you. What would you do for groceries? What if you couldn't drive? If you have never used public transportation, try it now while you're still able. What about things like doctor's offices? Hospitals? All the stuff you use? Is it scattered around and difficult to get to or quite convenient?

--making sure you've got resources. Do you have people who can offer assistance? Knowledge of who to call if you've got problems with the house? Do you know about services in your area which can help?

Also some tips to spring clean your computer!

@dlfk202000 Welcome! Keep it up! losing 25 lbs in a year is great! you can't really go below 1000 healthily (unless you are very very small, perhaps, like 4 foot ). More exercise is the common approach to increase speed of weight loss, and also weight training (correct me if i'm wrong someone i'm not a specialist by any means) is said to increase metabolism.

ALEXA I loved the video about that. Thanks for posting.

@auntiebk Barbara I'm not religous at all (well i meditate some, and very occasionally listen to Buddhist talks, i used to go to meditation thing a lot many years ago but have dwindled lots little by little over time), but i don't mind at all that you talk about going to church and so on. That is part of your life and who you are.

@Heather i noticed an increase in cases in some places was linked to an increase in testing.

    @barbiecat Two suggestions:
"*don't set a weight loss goal on a timeline, instead set goals of drinking more water and seeking every opportunity to be active
*check in with this thread every day for new ideas and support" Good suggestions.

@Machka I'm sorry about your back and/or kidney. i might have missed your earlier post about it. have you gotten that checked out? Someone in my family had kidney issues at one point so that's one i'm likely to get checked out when in doubt.

Machka - I'm subject to stones, as well, and drinking diet cranberry juice by the gallon and as much water as I can shove down has helped me pass a couple of small ones. Not saying you should, I am not a doctor and don't even play one on TV. I just know it's assisted me more than once. All they do in the United States is administer the contrast so it shows up on X-ray, and the contrast pushes it right out anyway (again, for small ones). Lots of anti-inflammatories were helpful as well for the pain. If it's large enough to block the ureter, of course, all bets are off.

In general, just loving my busy life these days. All the interest, very little stress.

    Love y'all,

Good morning ladies! <3 Halfway through the week!

SuziQ - thank you for sharing the link to what to plant when in Florida. Very informative! Just as I clicked on that link I noticed that little palm on the table next to me. It's holding on.... I needed that reminder to mist it.

    Rebecca
    - congrats on the extended fast! Kickin that insulin to the curb-go girl! If any of you are curious about intermittent fasting, there's a brand new book out - "Fast, Feast, Repeat" by Gin Stephens which goes into great detail about how and why it works. I think it's available on Kindle and Audible in addition to paperback, which I've just started to read.

    Rebecca -
I made a little comment on the DDD page this morning and Gin herself gave me a <3. I screenshotted it, lol.

    Here we go ladies:

    zhze6ml0sbta.jpg

I pulled this from another page. Disregard the KETO advice, look at what we're supposed to wear now that we're over 50. Don't forget the shopping bag size purse! B) I will admit that's how my mom dressed in her older years, polyester pants and all. My grandmothers always wore dresses.

Shopping today so need to work on my list.

Make it a great day! <3

i was able to read skim decently. 1day is doable.

IGNORING, i also ignored someone on here some many months ago whose posts i felt irked by but then later i un-ignored them and now i find them fine.

I was on another thread some years ago and many of the people were left politically but one was very much to right, and one was upset and a bit attacking the one on the right who eventually left the thread. she seemed very nice regardless of or despite differing political viewpoints. many on the thread wrote "maybe it's better like that that she left since she has such a differing viewpoint" but i found it strange and sad that the group seemed to be ok with this long term person leaving due to feeling unwelcome in her political positions. it was after 2016 elections and the subject then turned much to emotional reactions to current events in relation to the elections (political actions etc). I think the vast majority on that group were not happy with the election results (some feeling depressed about it, and thus possibly linked to eating, health) and thus spoke about it freely.

    Good activist day yesteday!
I'm at the forefront of a collective request, at the source of a petition that is now garnering prominent support. WE had our 1st little zoom meeting of those who wished to be more involved (13 or so in all) and some said we need more prominant contributers. I contacted a prominent person in the field (hesitatingly) who had clearly shown his suppport and he called me back and spoke at great length was very into participating. he had already sollicited some other prominant people to co sign and offered to write an accompanying letter, to contact other key people, and gave some tips as to how to have a better chance of getting better results.

I put a ton of time into this. Without question more than anyone else, but another person has also worked many hours on it. Since there are 5 of us we started splitting the work. i did my parts and then the other founding guy didn't do his and is going on vacation tomorrow for a week and is then working intensively the following week. He kept saying : "can you...." "can you just double-check..." the things he was unable to find.
Yesterday he said, "i have children" (all grown and past 23, not living at home and doing very well, according to what he's said) so i have less time than you". Super annoying to hear someone sure that i have more time than him and say "You only have to..." Another colleague (also a guy) did the same thing last week a few times in a row.

    Irksome!

Today not too many things planned so in theory i can get some stuff done.

Bummer: i had found this secretarial service for a reasonable 33 euros an hour (half comes back in tax credit) to help with filing i get snowed under with, they just upped their price to 52 euros an hour! I said i can't follow that rate! Charging an extra euro or two per hour for mask and gel seems ok.

I'd be really surprised the employees get a 63% wage increase!

Had a tough work thing on Tuesday to digest and deal with.

Did Michelle Dozois Cardio Strength DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jari Love’s Extremely Ripped DVD.

    Dlfk
    – I was thinking about you. When I took a exercise prescription class, FITT were the things you were supposed to look at. Frequency (I know I break this one, you really should exercise every other day to give your muscles time to recover), Intensity – one day very intense the next time not as much, Time – vary for how long you exercise and Type – don’t do the same thing over and over, your muscles get used to the same thing and you don’t burn as many calories. Use the elliptical, then the treadmill, then the bike, that sort of thing

Pip – good for you taking early retirement! You’ll love it, you won’t know where you found the time to work….lol

Rebecca – I’m so glad you found something (fasting) that works for you. I don’t think I could ever do it, but that’s wonderful for you!

    Tracey
    – my dishwasher wasn’t doing its job well a while ago. The dishes weren’t coming clean. What I did was clean the filter, was it ever filthy! Ever since then the dishes have been coming out clean. I didn’t know this but you are supposed to clean it on a regular basis. I don’t think I ever cleaned it!

One server dishing foods at a buffet makes sense, but I don’t know how this place is doing it. Maybe they revamped the place so that there is only one server. Previously, things were just in a row and you went around and took what you wanted. Should be interesting, I need to check it out. Why couldn’t you just wash your hands after using the shower? 103 years old!!!! Wonder what her secret to longevity is?

There were always little pieces of the litter around the threshold to the mudroom (where the litter box is). They were always hard to get up. I do notice that the Roomba got most of them up.

Wonder where Penny has been? I loved reading about where she lives

Chilly and rainy (again) here today. It’s supposed to be nice this weekend, tho. I bet the pool temp won’t be great, tho. We weren’t running the pump so I don’t know the exact water temp, but it’s probably in the 70’s

I had a 10 mm x 4 mms stone lodged in my left ureter in 2009. That was horrible!! I had it surgically removed and the specialist told me I was prone to developing more. Mine cannot be seen on ultrasounds ... only on CT scans. I've had a few CT scans since that big one and each one has shown more stones (often several in each kidney), but of a smaller size. Small enough that they'll pass, but just large enough that they cause some pain as they go.

Cranberry juice increases the risk of calcium oxalate and uric acid stones, mine is one of those two, so although I like cranberry juice, I avoid it.

However, water is very important. My kidneys are often sore when I don't drink enough water, and I noticed the first nagging pains this time on a day where I didn't drink much water. So I just figured this was either stress (tight muscles) or just the usual slightly achy kidneys because of lack of water. But it has been several days now and I have been trying to drink more than usual, and it's getting worse.

When the pain starts to get worse, it becomes a restless pain. For lots of things, if you lie quietly in a comfortable position, the pain goes away, but that doesn't happen with kidney stones. There is no comfortable position!! And I'm finding that now ... I've been pacing, stretching, lying on the floor and now I'm trying a hot water bottle which seems to be helping a little. And water. And anti-inflammatories.

If it doesn't start improving soon, I will head to the Dr or ED or something. I always hope they'll just ... go!

Lanette ~ Love the Keto Age related post. I haven't worn a dress in years but I do still wear bermuda shorts. My worst "old lady" thing is that all my pants are pull ons. Guess that is because most of my weight is in the mid section and finding a pair of pants that button at the waist is almost impossible. :'(

    Barbie & Katie ~ I am so glad I don't use Alexa! I don't think I could stand all that talking. :s

    Barbara ~ Can't imagine you being a hippee! :)

Kate ~ Happy 55th anniversary. We will celebrate our 51st this August. :)

Karen in VA ~ Since we have gone through a broken refrigerator twice in the past few years, that is the appliance I could not do without. A second tool would be my microwave. We use our all day long.

Michele ~ Please let us know how your Roomba does after it finishes mapping the house. I think that would be a great gadget.

Beth ~ Thank you for your posts that put forth so much common sense! You are an inspiration. <3

I am having to deal with an eBay seller with whom I purchased a set of stainless flatware. When it arrived, it was not as described and she refuses to believe me. It was supposed to be Reed & Barton stainless but most of the pieced are marked Korea Stainless. I did send her photos of the marks but they are difficult to see (Rita I need your photography skills). I have used the pattern I sought to buy for over 20 yrs and just wanted to add to my set.

    And in other news ...

Australian borders likely to stay closed until next year, Tourism Minister says

Meanwhile, Tassie's borders remain closed to the mainland. So not only can we not get off the small island, we also cannot leave the big island until at least 2021.

There go my faint hopes of Christmas in Canada.

Oh well ... maybe next winter (ours) / summer (Canada's).

That will make it 4 years since I've seen my parents.

My father has been struggling with heart issues for years (heart attack, stent, pacemaker, another semi-heart attack 3 years ago and discovery that the stent had grown over and needed to be replaced). My mother is going for surgery next month to remove her ovaries for something that looks suspiciously like ovarian cancer. So I'm not worried at all about waiting another whole year.

look at what we're supposed to wear now that we're over 50. Don't forget the shopping bag size purse! B) I will admit that's how my mom dressed in her older years, polyester pants and all. My grandmothers always wore dresses.

Where in the world did you find that?!? :astonished:

My almost-80 year old mother dresses more like the 40-50 range and I will still venture into the 30-40 range!

    Me at 49 ... :)

:)Heather, I watched your son's video. It's the second one I've watched. He's charming and the videos are engaging. Those meals are quite a contrast to the foods you cook.

:) My feeling about Alexa and the Ninja Foodie is to remind myself that the best approach is what is best for our relationship.

Barbara: I’ve sent a message to you with the information. Have you received it yet?

We have a sunshiney morning. I’ve cleaned up after the dog and checked on my bean plants. A couple of them have died because of deer damage but I’ve planted new beans and hope they’ll sprout up. Most of the plants are looking good.

Michele NC - have not seen any buffets open around here, some resturants that have a buffet inside of them that also serve meals in my experience are all shutting down their buffets. I was never a buffet person anyway so this does not effect me. I have no idea on how they are handeling this.
