Just came in from the pool where the water is 91. Yvonne - how hot does the water get there?
Tripsmom – we’re so happy to have you. Welcome! I was thinking, how about getting a mini stepper that you can use while you’re sitting reading/crafting/sewing/whatever. At least that’s a start. I know Barbie has an exercise bike that she rides while she’s knitting or watching TV
Ruth Utah – what kind of traps do you have for the wasps?
Speaking of which…I tried putting a slice of turkey in the trap. I see it caught one of the wasps. Not sure if it was the turkey or not. As expected, it did start to shrivel.
Katla – happy birthday!
Mahjongg tonight.
I see the store are having "back to class" sales, not "back to school"

Happy Birthday, Katla! It is also my best friend's birthday. Hope your day was amazing!0

Machka, I’m glad those painful splints got removed.
Oh, Heather! what a morning! I’m so relieved to hear he just came back in the door, but never an update for you was a bit hard, I’d think. I’m glad there’s no concussion. And straining can in fact increase syncope. Allan had cough syncope, which happens when you have a hard coughing spell and pass out. I thought it was low oxygen, but it’s not - something happens with the vagus nerve from that strain.
Lisa, i just love your “sign behind the toilet” idea! Just to prove they’re still men. Ain’t it the truth?
DellaFaye, I’m a night person, so I’ve been in bed 2, or at most 3 hours before your wake-up. Oddly enough, the only time that differed was when I was camping. Even in the North country, where it doesn’t really eat totally dark in the summer, I’d wake around 4am when everything was totally silent, poke up the fire we’d banked or start a new one, then get the coffee ready in a couple of large thermoses. I’d sit and drink my coffee and try my best to not think but to just be one with where I was. I guess, from what I read, that that’s a form of meditation.
Katla, Happy Birthday and Many More.
Rebecca,my daughter, Helen, was a member of Shung Nu for years. I remember Don Miguel, too. She had many friends in the SCA. She misses it. I think I would enjoy it if things ever become active again.
I got my car all new tires the other day, but at the cost of my first at-fault accident in years. Costco parking lot requires extreme vigilance. I backed in to another car that was passing as I tried to adjust my angle in the space. It worries me, because I normally would have caught that. Losing my ability to drive is a huge fear of mine. So much of my independence is based on driving.

I overdid it working in the yard on Saturday and my back has been sore. I have been walking the dogs in the morning but staying away from yard work and riding my exercise bike. The hardest thing has been staying off the bike because I usually ride it for hours every day while watching TV, eating my supper, reading, and going to Zoom meetings. Since I have some extra time, I've been taking a nap in the afternoon which is also good for resting my back. I'm taking it one day at a time. All this sitting is very unusual for me.
We filled out our ballots yesterday and dropped them off today. We vote by mail or by dropping the envelope in one of many convenient drop boxes in the county.
It is extremely hot for us today---77 degrees.
Katla
We continue to shelter in place as much as possible. Today we ventured out for the first time in almost two weeks and deposited our ballots, went to the drug store for a few items I couldn't find in our regular store, dropped a bunch of stuff off at Goodwill, and Jake got a hair cut.

Katla, Happy Birthday!!
Finished doing my garden reorganizing today. It was hard work, and some of my plants are not happy about being dug up and replanted. Hopefully they will get over it. I was really concerned about my bleeding heart and a miniature rose that friends gave me when we moved into the new house but both seem to be adapting quite well.
My time at the Y has been going well, I just wish I could be there just a little bit longer, we're only allowed an hour, an extra 15 min would be perfect, but it is what it is.
It's my birthday tomorrow and DIL's on the 28th, so I've invited them over for dinner on Saturday. I've been trying to get hold of an Italian trattoria that I was have a gift card for. They are offering family size meals for take out, a heat and eat thing. The phone lines are supposed to be open from 4 til 8, I've been getting a busy signal or the phone just rings and rings....Sure hope I can get hold of them, I don't really feel like cooking! lol
Congrats to those celebrating, hugs for those who need them and welcome to the newbies!

Yvonne ... you said "My diet has been a train wreck lately too. I'm tired of working and worrying about finances and being stuck in the house, and I'm lonely and kind of cranky lately. I think we just have to give ourselves permission to start moving again with baby steps." I absolutely agree!

We are out and about too much for my taste. I would like to stay home a bit more, but since we are "allowed" out, we go out. I don't think I would be too upset with another couple of weeks of shelter in place. What I liked about that is that I didn't need to make decisions. No "do I feel like going out today?" questions. Or where we go. Decision breaks are nice.
I think shelter in place is coming to a city near me very soon. In the meantime, I'm planning a road trip for just the two of us.

Tasmania is almost business as usual, but my husband and I are still "shutdown" and will be till the end of July. A full 4 months!
I would love it if, in the next week, they decided to shut us down again for another 2 months ... but so far it doesn't look too likely.

Rebecca: ‘Pinky swear’ backatcha.
Yvonne: I had a DMV photo for my license renewal this year, too. :ohwell: On the other hand, when I renewed my license the new photo was a much slimmer person than my old license photo. I can thank MFP and all of you for encouraging me to be healthier & lighter.
Sharon: I had a fender bender at Safeway several months ago. It was very upsetting & my car was damaged. My insurance company stood by me, the fender damage to my car was repaired, and the other car’s policy sent their final payment a few weeks ago. I hope I don’t have to go through anything like that again. :noway:
Barbie: We are also sheltering in place as much as possible. I’m the go-for, as in go for groceries, go for hardware, and so on. :ohwell:
Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. This is 7/20/2020. I think number patterns like this come along once in a lifetime. I’m hoping to enjoy every minute that I can. I’ve talked to my adult children today and my best friend from Junior High onward through High School & our first year of college. I have a good husband, good adult kids & I feel blessed.

Happy Birthday Katla
Heather -- glad to hear your husband will be OK.
Movies -- before his accident, my husband and I would watch a range of movies and TV shows. Nothing too violent or scary (definitely NOT Criminal Minds level) but we'd head into suspense or watch CSI etc. Since his accident, he can't watch things like that without getting really upset so the "darkest" we'll go are things like Midsommer Murders, Agatha Christie, Father Brown and the like. That's OK with me.
Housekeeping -- both my husband and I lived on our own for at least a decade before marrying and living together so we're both perfectly capable of keeping house. The yard/garden is his baby. He enjoys being out there and doing stuff.
Heat -- I'm envious!
Night Owl -- yes I am! I tend to go to bed at about 1 am and would prefer to sleep till about 10 am each day if I could, but during the week I usually have to be up about 8 am, or during this shutdown time, 9 am.
These days, however, I've been sleeping 11-12 hours a night. Last night I was so tired from our outing to get my splints out, that I went to sleep about 12:15 am and slept a solid 11.5 hours.
Driving -- my husband can't now/yet. He couldn't after the accident, then regained his licence for 3 days and had a grand mal epileptic seizure so lost it again. He was thinking about trying to get it back again when we went into shutdown.
I don't like driving and can't for another week because of my surgery.
Fortunately we've got a decent bus service although I am still trying to think of ways to use it less to increase the speed of my commute.
Splints -- so glad to have them out! In the beginning, I couldn't feel them, but as the swelling started to go down and nerves started coming back, I could. I'm still swollen - I can feel it under my eyes, but it's starting to go down. I can raise my eyebrows a bit now, which I couldn't do a few days ago.

Sharon, SCA is worldwide which is nice. We first joined when we lived in Japan, as a way to wear our Renn faire clothes, and relax a bit. I learned how to build a corset, and made my husband's doublet. We made "Apple jack" in our freezer. Since brewing anything alcoholic was forbidden, we did " science experiments" lol! Our apple juice liquor was really smooth and nice!

We are not “business as usual” by any means, but we can go out. Dining out is outdoors only. We have to purchase food if we order alcohol and most places limit our table time to 90 mins. We have to wear masks unless we are seated. Our gyms, spas, massage, facial, nail places, etc. are shut down for the second time. Bars are closed unless they have food and outdoor space. People are not behaving and are gathering in large groups at the beaches, so I suspect we will lose those again soon and sheltering in place is soon to follow.
That said, I am going to make an effort to stay home more. We really don’t need to go out.

Katla - Happy Birthday! Today is my DB's birthday too.
Heather - Glad DH is home and OK.
We picked our first blueberries yesterday. I think we are going to have a good crop this year. Also have cherry tomatoes that are almost ripe. Coyotes have been hanging around our neighborhood all day today.
Everyone take care Sue in WA2 -
@Suzi, I like the mask with window, I thought of that right away and heard early that they existed for hearing impaired (for lip-reading). We had a large meeting in July, in an amphitheater rather than in a room. One of the colleagues lowered his mask just an instant to show a smile (as we don't meet and haven't seen one another since at least March) and I did the same. It seemed very warm.1

@Sharon, oh wow for the key episode.0

@AuntiBk I decided to work in the public sector rather than the private cause I had thought they were less money-grubbing. (Also, in France, state-financed schools tend to be the better more elitist schools, so: better students.) I'm not at all convinced I was right about that. (though I'm not sure it's better in the private sector). We could conceivably have a class action with hundreds of teachers, or more if we spread to different sectors.2
-
@Godmomkim I used to occasionally make zucchini crust pizza
with old moosewood cookbook recipe. it was a success.
HOUSEWORK I have never been a clean freak but seemed to more or less keep up till about 50 or so. Now it's a struggle. I think it's partly much increased professional business (I've had to put much more into work these past years), and mental exhaustion in a way, coming - partly -from work stress issues.1 -
COUNTING NUMBERS OBSESSIVELY my dad was a statistician and was always counting. he would talk about how much things cost a lot which is not very much appreciated. Like when we'd eat out as a family at the end he's say who cost the most! And when he had a 2 year hiatus in early 60s between his long career and a very late last job in his mid sixties, we would go for longish walks sometimes and once he went on his own and he counted stuff: 4 hours, 37 telephone poles, and so on. I work in the arts and find numbers a sometimes comforting counterbalance to the unquantifiable aspects of the art world.1
-
@Heather I'm sorry you had to go through all that stress, and glad things are looking better.
DISHWASHERS I was fine without one but now I regret not having one. my kitchen is miniscule and it would be hard to find a place even for a mini-one.0 -
Hi all,
I haven't slept much. Too worried about DH falling again. He WILL NOT SIT DOWN to pee. Grrr! I've told him I'm just going to leave him lying there. Actually, I will just call 999 (emergency). I moved into the front bedroom to read, instead of upstairs, so I could hear him fall more easily. Heard him creep along once and asked him if he was ok. He said yes. With his prostate he has to go several times a night. I do too and I keep putting the seat down every time.
I'm as stiff as a board myself from tensing up. Even my knee has come out in protest! I had to do some complicated things to get into the bathroom yesterday to help him and my knee didn't like it. My whole body feels as if it's been in an accident.
Today I'm going to wash my hair, do the majority of my exercises, put my face on, and set out for the train station to meet my friend. Then we will wander through Hove to Fatto a Mano and see if they have an outside table. We will be there early, so I think it's likely. Then a stroll to the beach. I will wear my huge Chinese folding hat and cover up as the sun is shining. Hope my knee behaves. All in all it will be about 4 miles.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATLA :drinker: How lovely to hear from your old friend.
I do various knee exercises every day and it has made an enormous difference. I was almost crippled before. Yesterday's wriggling and squeezing through the door gap was unusual. It still doesn't enjoy twisting movement. Being able to 'run' on it was amazing to me.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx6 -
Machka, I am catching, up. I am sorry about your nose issues (and operation?). I hope this operation helps and you recover well and speedily.
BMI is now up to 25.1 today. I used to weigh daily but don't weight self much anymore. My underwear felt tight and so I weighed self. My motivation on WL is so low. I go for walks but they are no longer brisk. I'm not binging (I used to at times from some time in teens to early 30s), but rather sedentary - much mores since COVID and our 2 month strict police-controlled confinement in France (we could only go out to get exercise 1h 1x per day, equipped with self-authorization form).
The weather has been mostly stunning for months.
I finished work for 1 major legal case and my lawyer did an awesome job.
In addition to that I had to spend 2 days working on responding to a letter by a superior in one of my 3 schools.
I consulted my file and saw she had put in a letter severely criticising me (like-pre-disciplinary), with many lies. I had much proof of the "inexactitude" of her letter, so had to dig up emails and documents and scan and number and explain them. For example, she said I didn't accept the days the school asked me to teach, but I totally did, and have proof in writing. The school gave the info orally or on a post-it but I always recapped it by a mail (thank goodness).
I sent 78 page registered letter to the RH director, who's such a dishonest guy, with a soft, sweet voice acting buddy buddy with all the teachers.
Since I'm a leader in requesting our rights be respected AND we have a new director, they've clearly been out to get me. The middle people like my supervisor are presumably praised for making life difficult for me.
The highly dishonest RH director is supposed to be the reference for defending our rights if we have a problem. That is a big joke. I can contact an outside organisation, but it takes so much time too.
Supposed to be doing an online academic writing class. I forgot it yesterday so will aim to do it today. Zoom + private writing sessions with check ins with class leaders. I got yesterday's synopsis and it seems good.
I have to follow up on some rental apartment stuff too; little electrical thing to get fixed- I hope I can find someone to do it properly: oner burner in the built-in stove gets short circuits. I hope it's fixable without taking out the whole thing (major work). Otherwise I'll have to change it and have work done and that'll be a lot of follow up and at least a few weeks rent lost (to add to 4 months rent lost due to loss during covid crisis). And find a new renter, the lovely renter over the past year is leaving. it's a small pretty furnished studio so the average rental time is about a year or so (from 5 months to 2.5 years).
Ah and there's a water damage issue that's not big but managing it is complex related to insurance. Long story.
My place is a mess. I don't know why I let it go. Cleaning for an hour makes me feel so much saner.
Today is a new day.
1)going out for a slow walk (better than nothing) and maybe stop for coffee at a café (1h or so max)
2) 5 min meditation (5 min)
3) touching the earth (1 min)
4) an hour housework (1h)
5) follow up on insurance and electricity stuff for apartment, and put up an ad for the apartment (1-2h)
6) work on application for continuing ed (1h at least)
7) see if I can switch osteopath appointment (5 min)
8) go to online writing class (6 hours max)
9) pick up vegetables (bought neighbour's part in weekly organic veggie delivery, during her summer vacation)(30 min to walk there-5 min, find the place, chat, etc not be rushed)
10) work on art work at least (30 min)
yikes that's a lot ! Not a lot of hours: 10h11 minutes from 8 am to 8pm...leaving a couple of hours for rest, meals and unexpected, but I get off track sometimes. I think I'm less focused w age.
