Yvonne ... you said "My diet has been a train wreck lately too. I'm tired of working and worrying about finances and being stuck in the house, and I'm lonely and kind of cranky lately. I think we just have to give ourselves permission to start moving again with baby steps." I absolutely agree!

We are out and about too much for my taste. I would like to stay home a bit more, but since we are "allowed" out, we go out. I don't think I would be too upset with another couple of weeks of shelter in place. What I liked about that is that I didn't need to make decisions. No "do I feel like going out today?" questions. Or where we go. Decision breaks are nice.
I think shelter in place is coming to a city near me very soon. In the meantime, I'm planning a road trip for just the two of us.
Heather - I'm with you on the funeral. I told the mister to just toss my ashes in our canyon and drink a good sour beer in my honor. No fuss, no wake, no dinner. We're all alone out here anyway.

Heather ... glad to hear that your husband is ok! Scary stuff fainting and falling.
Pip ... I think Lisa stated it best. I'm sorry for your loss, but the timing was perfect if you think about it.
Allie ... your neighbor decided to give you a show? Good grief!
Housekeeping ... I hate it and I'm employed as a housekeeper! My husband grew up with a doting mother she did everything and I mean everything for the men in her house. When I would visit, she would serve all the men present and then point to the counter for me to get my own. Now I want you to know I loved her, this was just her way. Women took care of the men. So ... I do everything here in my own home. Laundry, trash, yard work, kitchen duties ... you name it. I've reconciled this seeming lack of involvement from my husband by recognizing that he works at a job he has hated for years, that stresses him out beyond all expectations, to provide for me and my sons. We truly lack for nothing. Would I really want him to come home and then do the dishes? No. However, working as a cleaner at my church means that I don't feel like cleaning when I come home. This is becoming a problem. The house needs a good old-fashioned scrub down and then a coat of paint! It's on my to do list!

I have had my splints removed! I can breathe!
Splints are not small things, and the left one in particular, was putting unnecessary pressure on parts of the interior of my nose, causing quite a bit of pain. Such a relief to have them out.

Congrats! Must be a lot of relief in many ways!

I never was a clean freak. I do what’s necessary but dislike doing it. Mostly because my DH loves clutter and mess. Can’t touch his messes (piles of stuff) so have to work around it. Discouraging so hate cleaning.
RvRita
Exactly my situation. I hate clutter, but I can't help what he does.

Well walking didn't work for me. I'm amazed at you ladies that manage it in the heat. As soon as I decided to try laps in the basement, my dad set up his huge puzzle in the way.
But just now I did two minutes on the mini stepper in the basement with music. Not too bad for a start, and so much better than my sedentary lifestyle. Gotta keep trying until I find something. Just hope my knee holds out.

Beth - My husband is just beginning to adjust to me taking over the house and yard, after a 50-50 split (largely) for the last decade, and it's kind of funny to watch. He felt so guilty yesterday that he came out to help me get the bed linens off the line, because he thinks I'm too little to reach. I just smile and let him help. It's been fun watching him begin to relax now his weekends aren't filled with chores and hours of yardwork. Big adjustment for both of us, actually.
The fence people are finally back with the right equipment - they came out on Friday afternoon with two post-hole diggers, which is much like trying to break concrete with a dessert spoon. Was not happy when the foreman called and told me the labor costs were going to be higher than he bid - I told him he needed to send them out with the right equipment, since they are actually a fence company and are presumably able to dig a hole in a reasonable amount of time, since they've been in business for 80 years.
What he couldn't have known is that I dug a lot of post holes with those diggers in my youth, and while effective in the end, they are not efficient at all, especially on dry ground with a grass overlay. There's no way he would have known that I knew that, though... Today, they are out there with a jackhammer, which makes a whole lot more sense. Hasn't rained for two weeks, and the ground's hard. I know the labor cost is going to come in somewhat higher, but it needs to be within reason.
Kinda love being 60. And being from the country. And not being a dang idiot. And being willing to speak up. The Roaring TwentyTwenties indeed...
Love y'all,

i had thought about it when it was happening. i am glad i was there to take her right home, it was her time.5 -
DH is trying to unload the dishwasher and do the washing up with his painful neck. He has managed it. He is very stubborn. It must hurt because he is taking Paracetamol. He rarely takes any kind of pill.
I am still meeting my friend for lunch tomorrow. I bought him some soft wholemeal rolls, so he can make his own easily. It will have to be a light dinner after my enormous pizza lunch! Fish, I am thinking.
We were so preoccupied with DH that we completely forgot about the painter coming to give an estimate for the living room. I looked blankly at him on the doorstep. He is busy until October, but that's ok. We've got to get the floors sanded first. Strangely he is a good friend and recommendation of the guy we originally wanted, who has ill health issues, and he could be his twin brother! Both obsessed with cricket, so get on very well with DH. Same way of talking. My son has used both the guys. He is reckoning on a 5-6 day job. Unfortunately we have glass doors with 15 panels in each!
Machka - so happy for you to have got those horrible things out.

I actually was enjoying when we were on total Shelter at home- I like staying home, like you plus that was my reason/excuse to not have to go on every little errand husband wanted me to go on with him, mostly, going to see his mom. I loved three months of not having to deal with her. He still did but I didn't have to go. I still don't go often but not as strict as I was. We are saving a lot of money too- not going out shopping, just to go out and have something to do like before- he loves to shop and doesn't like to stay home. He still shops, even more on line than he used to.3 -

Heather: I’m happy to know your DH is at home. I hope his neck pain goes away soon.
Rebecca: I attended a Renaissance Fair in Colorado with my daughter and granddaughter several years ago. I was delighted. It was a great deal of fun. As a horse nut, I loved watching the jousting. I also fondly remember a musical performance by a talented group of bagpipers. Good times and good memories.
Machka: Congratulations with having your splints removed. Breathing freely is an excellent outcome. :flowerforyou:
Annie: Can you get a stationary bike? It may be a real asset to your efforts to be more active. Walking and riding a stationary bike are two things that work well for DH & me. The stationary bike is weather proof. Ours are kept in our garage which is generally pleasantly cool in summer and reasonably warm in winter.
Lisa: Good news for your new fence. I hope the rest of the installation goes smoothly.
Pip: I’m happy that you were able to take care of your kitty when it was her time. Now you can move on to your new adventure without a lingering regret about leaving kitty behind.

Annie ... Forgive me. I forget the particulars as to why your knee is troublesome. Several years ago, I had significant knee problems (but did not need replacement). I was unable to go up and down the stairs. Barely able to walk. My son and I joined a gym and I had a trainer that was used to people like me. The very first thing he did was ask me to do exercises that involved the knees. I reminded him that I was unable to use the knee and, to be frank, I was terrified of doing anything that involved the knee. The exercises he recommended involved strengthening the muscles above and below the knee ... which allowed the knee to tolerate a lot more. He even had me doing modified squats!! Now, every time my knee starts to bother me, I can almost guarantee you that I've not been exercising and keeping those support muscles strengthened. If you're not under the care of a doctor, you might want to look into knee strengthening exercises.

Beth and Katla-thanks! The mini stepper is all I have room for. It's a drawback of living in my parents' house.
I had a bad surgery on my knee to loosen my kneecap. I agree that I need knee strengthening exercises. I do baby lunges and such. I'm just bad at getting the pace right. But two minutes of stepper seems good for a start.

Awe, fun times! I loved the jousting too! One year we attended the Northern California Ren faire most weekends people thought we worked there. People would ask us where this or that was and wish to take pics with us. LOL! !y son's would spend hours in the maze. There was a guy at the front yelling, " come explore our maze and GET LOST "! I would tell any of the people going in to not follow the kids in the green, or brown pants, because they will get you lost for certain! I always got henna tattoos on my hand! It was relaxing to explore. The boys had great naps out there. As a giggle we wenches used to lie down in front of bagpipe player's so they'd have to walk over us. They'd smile and walk around!😁

I agree! Anything that gets that knee moving is a step in the right direction! There were days I didn't think I could do 20 seconds let alone 2 minutes of anything involving my knees!

Well, hello there. I am so happy to have found this site and this thread. I have been working on the front lines (nurse) for the duration of the pandemic. While I am happy to honor my calling to patient care, its stressful and my food choices have not been the best. My goal is to lose whatever by October when my children come home for a visit. I will not be done by any stretch but I will be on my way to a more healthful life. The best part is that my husband is also on the front lines (but in a different profession) so we are both in the same boat and both want to take these steps together.
Exercise continues to be a problem, I'm exhausted when I get home and all I want to do is sit and read a great book, or knit, or sew but none of those things inspire my metabolism. What are you doing for exercise? Is anyone doing anything with resistance bands? That seems to be a great low impact way to get into shape. What would you recommend?
Thanks, I look forward to learning from the wisdom of the group.

Getting up that early, what time do you go to bed?
The earliest I ever got up on a regular basis was 5 and that didn't last very long. [/quote]
I usually go to bed by 6:30 PM so I can be asleep by 7 PM. I love my mornings as they are quiet.

Beth I had physical therapy to strengthen my knee. Yes squats were part of it. He also told me to make sure I wear shoes that support the arch in my foot. Since starting to do this I have less trouble. I an tell that my shoes are wearing out by how my knees feel. Just bought two new pairs for this reason. I do this so I can alternate shoes too and not wear them two days in a rows.2

I just had an unexpected call from my best friend during Junior High and High School. She was also the maid of honor in my wedding. She called to wish me happy birthday. This is the best surprise in a long while.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️5

My sister-in-laws use Spam in their wasp traps. We have had so many wasps the last three summers including ground nest ones. Didn't notice a nest when I was gardening last week and got stung multiple times. So I'm reloading our traps!
Smoothies are my go to breakfast or lunch in this hot weather. I pretend I'm having a gooey shake!
Hope everyone is having a good day. Stay safe!

Happy birthday, Katla!
Welcome, TripsMom - Bits of advice:- Find an exercise you love, because if you hate it, you won't keep doing it. Mine is the elliptical, rower and gardening.
- Find the time that makes sense to you--I could never get myself to exercise at night, or after a work shift, I was just too tired--exercise had to be the first thing, or I would simply give up in the end.
- Lastly - just remember you can't outrun a bad diet. Exercise will help, but it won't make you lose weight unless you do something about how you're eating. There are people here on every possible species of diet regimens, so there's always someone to talk to about whatever you're into.
Regards,

Today is National Moon Day!
Do you remember where you were when it happened? "National Moon Day on July 20th commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. ... On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 carried the first humans to the moon. Six hours after landing on the moon, American Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface."
Heather - Your memorial sound track sounds great! I have directed my survivors to have a big party and play "Bohemian Rhapsody" real loud. Cremation is already arranged and paid for. No viewing, and they can scatter my ashes in a beautiful, natural place.
Barbie - I tend to avoid "heavy" movies too. Life throws enough of that at us without paying to see it. I used to be more open-minded about it before some friends and I watched "Gallipoli" one night and I swore never again.
Rebecca - Your pan of potatoes, veggies, and kielbasa sounds pretty yummy! I only recently discovered the joys of kielbasa in a simple fry-up. I usually use brussels sprouts and onions with it.
SuziQ - I don't spend that much on ice cream but I do run out to catch the popsicle truck most Saturdays!
Our Department of Motor Vehicles has opened up for all services on an appointment-only basis, so I was finally able to renew my driver's license that expired in May. (State residents were granted a 60-day waiver on renewal while the offices were closed.) There must be something wrong with their camera thosgh. My license has a picture of an old lady on it.
About the house cleaning... Philip will do anything I ask him to, but I have to ask. There are only a couple of chores he'll so without asking, although he doesn't do any of them to my standards. We've tried all kinds of stuff - lists on the fridge, gamification, you name it - but nothing has worked for very long. At some point I just decided I'd rather have a dirty house and not be going round and round all the time trying to get him to do his share. Mostly I just try to keep the kitchen and bathrooms tidied up. And on that note, my mom's mother was a clean freak so I'll share one of Mom's favorite sayings on the subject of housekeeping: "A little clean dirt never hurt anybody!"
We're luckier than most during pandemic conditions. I've worked from home for years, so staying home hasn't been too big a deal although we miss our friends. Philip was out of work for a couple of months and also had to shut down his event chair massage practice because it's too difficult to sanitize in public locations. He still practices at the studio with extra precautions. But we're also lucky that we have a share in Dad's river house and an RV, both of which give us opportunities to see something new now and then. My whole family is taking turns at the river house so we're not all there at once, and we've been managing to get down there about once a month.
It is hot. Hot, hot, hot. WTForecast says, "We are way too friggin close to the sun today." I'm ready to jump in the river soon!
