Today is worldwide Lion Day, Lazy Day, vlogging Day, And Skyscraper Appreciation Day. In the US it is National S’mores Day. Not bad for a Monday.
I’ve been doing good followup my get back to it plan but not losing. Not sure why. Colitis attack a couple days this past week so could be that. Not Giving Up! I know it works! (Keto and IF 16/8).
Headed out for my walk.

I make everything more fun by listening to music, a podcast, or an audio book while I do it.
Karen, I decided to retire the day I walked into a staff meeting and realized that I was no longer energized by the challenge of accomplishing more with fewer resources. Until that moment I loved the challenge. I left it to the younger people and never looked back.
Pip, 90 degrees and heavenly would never exist together for me. Glad you are happy in your new world.
Time to work on my yard project. Dog walking and chatting with hubby were my earlier activities.
Barbie in NW WA7 -
Nice diagram, Faye. The collar is purely to keep his head level if I have to do the EM again. Sitting with a towel around his neck last time was a bit tedious.
I hope this is the last of it. The chances of him doing anything about it are next to zero. At the moment it is very minor, but he is a bad patient. He has been used to being fit and healthy all his life. He never even has headaches! Any minor twinge he takes as a personal insult. He is not resigned to the aches and pains of getting older. He will be 75 in October.
I'm feeling a bit guilty about my sedentary life at the moment, but i think I have a good excuse. I'm still doing my morning exercise before it's too hot. Otherwise I'm lying down with the fan on. My German is coming on wonderfully! I'm also reading about the bombing campaigns of WW2.
Katla - BBQ would be a major effort for us. Rescuing the equipment from the back of the shed. Lighting it, standing outside in the 98° heat cooking it!!! Much easier to get out a frying pan. I don't believe in gas bbqs. Charcoal or bust!
My living room is 86° Can't use the fan because DH doesn't like it.
Did I ever say I HATE this heat?

dsgoingtodoit wrote: »Howdy from North Texas - I'm Donna and I'm technically 49.5...but hope you are all ok with that. My metabolism is definitely over the 49 hump....so maybe that counts? ;D Anyway - I'm 205 days into tracking on here. I've lost 15-17 lbs depending on the day. I've done all of the different TDEE, BMR calculators..and have come up with various caloric goals. Just went to one specifically for older than 50 folks. My new TDEE is 1500 to lose 2 lbs a week. I've had numbers much higher...and lower. Here is my question... If by chance you are 5'3 'ish ....what is your calorie goal? Do you "zig zag" your calories to keep your metabolism rocking along? I'm planning to try to go to the gym at our rec center soon and check out if the covid cleaning standards are good enough that I would feel comfortable and safe there. I have been doing at home zoom zumba classes throughout quarantine. I'm starting to walk a few mornings a week with a friend at 6:15. With my business, (pet sitter full time) I do have the occasional dog walk to do. Of course, with the current covid situation...my business is slower than usual...so adding in walks on my own.
@dsgoingtodoit , Donna from North Texas, welcome!
No worries on the age, you're welcome anyway. Well done on the 15-17 pounds lost! Honestly, on the subject of where to keep your calorie goals, much like exercise, I think as long as you're losing, any amount you set over 1000 is fine. I've heard in more than one place that you multiply the weight you're trying to get to times for in order to get to that weight. Since I would like to eventually end up at 140, I shoot for 1400 and try not to get too crazy about it. I have been known to zig zag my calories but haven't had to yet in this run. I just do it long enough to get me off a stall.

Machka--Not sure I like all that gold. Interesting place and price.
I agree about the heat. I hate it. I stay inside as much as possible. At work I freeze so I am not happy about that. I just want Fall to get here.
Welcome to all the new ladies. Hi. to everyone else.
Enjoy your day. Blessings, Vicki GI NE4 -
Today is World Lion Day!
"World Lion Day supports and promotes charities and foundations that instill awareness of the great need for conservation efforts and sustainable solutions for addressing the global dwindling wild lion population in fulfilling our mission to protect and save the lions."
Faye - We had the opposite experience with winemaking and brewing. I never made a wine I was excited to drink, but nearly all of our beers and liqueurs have been good.
Rebecca - Your glowstick post was hilarious. I'm disappointed not to be glowing too!
Lisa - Mini-magnolias sound nice. How tall will they get? Altnough I do enjoy making bread the old-fashioned way, I probably wouldn't do it nearly as often if I didn't have a bread machine. I put in the ingredients and let the machine make the dough, then all I have to do is form up the loaves and bake them in the oven after a final rise.
RV Rita - I looked into a POD a few years back when we were getting ready to move, and thought the cost was shocking!
Machka - I'm envious of your gorgeous head of hair! I wore mine long for years but it's very fine and the length pulled out all of the wave so it got stringy the longer it grew. I think my hair is happier now that I've cut it off and let the curls do what they will.
Barbara - Our closest friends have been very careful during the pandemic so we manage to see them now and then with appropriate social distance. But I do SO miss hugging them!
Annie - We have a friend who is a professional fantasy writer. Whenever I start one of her books, I have to remind myself to stick with it because she tends to start out with way too much background before the story really takes off. Once that's out of the way her story-telling is terrific and sufficient to keep me going to the end regardless of how long the book is. But getting there takes some patience. Every writer has strengths and weaknesses, and beginnings are not her strength.
Michele - I use a small amount of yeast in addition to the sourdough starter when I make sourdough bread. It's usually around half the amount I'd use without the starter.
KetoneKaren - Wow, the Ogallala water tower looks like a space ship. What an amazing photo!
Well, as you can see, I got behind and had to do a lot of skimming to catch up again. Everything has gotten to the crispy stage here and we don't water the yard often but I had to start putting the hose on the trees. I'm so excited that our persimmon tree has finally established well enough to set fruit. It took several years to get there but it has quite a few small persimmons on it. The one fruit that looked most ripe had a big hole taken out of it, so yesterday we threw some bird netting over it. Hopefully the culprit was birds and not squirrels.
Continuing to have motivational issues. Stupid COVID... I had such a good routine going before it came along! Last night I took Luna for a walk at about 9:30 but the temperature was still nearly 90 with a heat index of 93 so it wasn't much fun. Starting today, I'm promising myself that I'll only watch TV if I do a workout on the stationary bike or Nordic Track when I turn on the tube.
Fall can come along any time now!

Yeah, it's hot. Egg just came staggering back in the house, complained to me, and then splayed out on the cool stone tiles in the kitchen... poor baby girl... Can you imagine being outside in 96 degree weather, with 60 percent humidity, and wearing a fur coat? I'd be laying on the tile, too...
I won't mind when Fall comes, but I'm actually enjoying the mornings now, before the day gets too hot - lots of shade and sun in our yard, so if it gets too bad, I can move into some shade. I peel off a couple of pounds in sweat every day while I work in the yard, and then gain that back with liquid through the afternoons, as I stay inside the house and get a few things done in here.
Before dawn, I got an article finished posted up to the site I'm writing for, and then linked over to LinkedIn. Then a half hour on the elliptical. After that, I dragged the hoses all over the yard, watered in all the plants we moved yesterday, as well as Corey's garden. Pulled my little green wagon full of water down to the ones too far away for the hoses to reach, and got them all a drink of water, as well. Did some weeding while I talked to my best friend, and then mowed the lawn. Washed all my work gloves in Windex, since I can't find ammonia on sale anywhere, as they get really funky after a half dozen or so wearings. Also washed my gardening tennis shoes, too. And hosed down the rugs that are too large to go in the washer, and those are out on the clothesline as well, along with the gloves and shoes.
Elliptical, 30 minutes - 200 calories (per fitbit)
Working outside, 1 hour 57 minutes - 890 calories (per fitbit)
Time for a shower now I've cooled down enough to stand it.
Productive day.
Later y'all,
Love,

Teri: I envy your paddle in the sea. We still have our boat, but it is currently my task to maintain it. I am not willing to try to single-hand so it has become an ornament. Sort of. Lat time DS was here, he & I took it for a sail. That was last summer and I enjoyed every minute.. :flowerforyou:
German Hillbilly: Congrats on your weight loss! :flowerforyou:
Anne in DE: I’m so sorry to hear that the stable where you ride was damaged in the storm. I hope the horse with lacerations will be able to heal.
Donna from TX: Welcome, you sweet young thing. Stop by often and get to know people.
Barbie: 70 degrees and heavenly works for me. If it is hotter than 70F I can handle things okay as long as the air conditioner works. It has been working for many years and still going strong. So far, so good.
Heather: Propane BBQ is my preferred way to cook outdoors. I don’t like the hassle or smell of charcoal briquettes. Isn’t it nice that we can both enjoy cooking outdoors the way we each prefer. We had a charcoal BBQ in the past. DH decided to squirt lighter fluid in it and used more than he intended. Neighbors called the fire department. After that we bought a propane BBQ. Nobody has called the fire department for that endeavor again, although neighbors did call when we put our ovens on their automatic clean cycle. We vowed to clean them more often to avoid smoke and embarrassment. :ohwell:
Yvonne & ixchelkeshet: The Covid Crisis doesn’t appear to be over. Take care of yourselves!

Allie, my dear,
All days are not like this one! I'm just enjoying my body moving now that I've taken 10 percent of my body weight off, and while some days it objects, I'm so pleased I can still get back up and go again the next day.
By the time she was 60 years old, my mother had three heart attacks, was newly diagnosed with age onset diabetes, had varicose veins stripped off both legs in separate surgeries, and one angioplasty. She could still walk me into the ground when I went to garage sales with her on Friday mornings.
I've been channeling Mama a lot lately. She keeps me moving!5 -

The mini-magnolias can get as high as 20 feet tall, and as wide as 15 feet, but they can also be trimmed, and I want them about five feet wide at the ground and 10 feet high, a stretched pyramid/cone shape. The original Southern magnolias they were produced from grow up to 80 feet high and 40 feet across--they were all over the rich people's neighborhoods in Nacogdoches, Texas, when I was growing up. You have to have serious aspirations to mansions or stately homes if you want a tree that big in your yard!5 -
Barbara ... younger son returned to Nashville apartment in June after leaving it unattended for 3 months. He claims that nothing smelled and there were no bugs. Turns out that only a little chicken juice was in the trashcan. I suspect his standards are considerably different than mine! He came home last week for a surprise visit and will be returning on Wednesday. First thing I asked when he came in the house was "did you empty your trash before leaving?"
German Hillbilly ... congratulation on the weight loss!
Lisa ... Onederland! WooHoo!!
Dental Work. Some of you may remember my root-canal without novocaine story from way back. Left me considerably traumatized ...to the point where I can no longer handle basic dental care. Today I was at the dentist to start the process for a crown and receive a temporary crown. The visit did not go well. Anxiety attack at the beginning. Then discovered that none of the anesthetic was numbing the tooth ... numbed my mouth/face/eyeballs ... but not one part of the tooth! Poor dentist was upset ... I was experiencing pain ... lifting from the chair actually with. After 8 different pokes with novocaine, I opted to just get it done. He figured he needed 5 more minutes and I told him I could handle anything for 5 minutes ... for pity's sake, I've had a root canal without novocaine in the past!! I was literally sopping wet from nervous/pain sweat after he was done. We have no idea what happened. The tooth became hypersensitive. From all indications there is no decay or reason for the pain, so have to believe anesthetic was not reaching one part of the tooth. Time will tell, of course. Once the temporary was put on, all pain ceased. Wouldn't even know I had dental work done. Weird.
Continuing to follow IF but limiting gluten based food and shortening my window to 3-3.5 hours has resulted in a 6 pound loss in 10 days. Better yet, my grumpy knee is behaving. I know this is mostly water/Covid related weight, but I really need to continue. I started using the Happy Scale app ...like the way it averages weight loss and reminds you that blips up and down are just that, blips.

BETH ~ The last time I went to the dentist to get a crown replaced, I was shaking so hard that the dentist could not do the work. I also hate going to the dentist.

Yvonne How interesting on the opposite homebrewing experience. I live in a microbrewery paradise and few of the local beers appeal to me. My favorite is McMennimins raspberry beer. I have thought about trying it again and this time making my own malt and blending in raspberries for a 5% beer. Interesting in my yesteryear brewing, I had awesome spring water and still puzzled why my beer was so harsh sometimes sour. I even bought top-grade hops and premium malt. Our club master brewer even tutored me in every stage and finally just decided I must be in a beer destroying vortex.
Lisa We are experiencing some serious heat, but it is dry here with low humidity. I couldn't take the temperatures in Arkansas or East Texas because of the humidity. I spent some time there with grandparents and I remember those chiggers and having to put sulfur on my lower body in unprintable places. I can still hear my grandma's voice saying, "Della Faye DON'T scratch." They didn't have AC, just big fans.
Heather Sorry to hear DH is stubborn. Yes, people with vertigo don't like fans. I can identify with DH as my being a fitness nut my entire life and at age 61 being in bed lying still as possible 20 out of 24 hours for 3 years was cruel and unusual punishment. I am surprised that he lets you do the maneuvers. Blindfold DH and get those fans going! I keep my place 68 F days and 66 F night. 85 is too hot unless you are in the Caribbean and a nice breeze is blowing.
Rita Sure wish I had read your post before my workout and the long walk. I feel as I have defiled Worldwide Lazy Day and will shame National S'mores day as it is too hot for a fire in the chiminea. S'mores are never the same made indoors.

Debbie How awesome that your dad is still growing popcorn. I grew up on homegrown popcorn. It was hull-less but I don't remember if it was Japanese. I hated gardening and always volunteered for tractor fieldwork or anything but growing and processing vegetables. My folks had a ONE ACRE garden for the three of us and we gave away most of it. We usually put up 2 years' worth every year as they worried about bad years. I can't remember any bad years just hours and hours of snapping, shucking, peeling, canning, drying, freezing, etc. I didn't like gardening until I was in my 20's and I even grew my own wheat for making bread. I remember the time spent removing kernels off the cobs. Does your dad have a good rate of kernels popping? One year I did and the next it was less than 50% so I gave up on popcorn. Now living in a town near numerous fruit and vegetable stands, I can buy it for less than it cost for water to grow it.
Donna Welcome and no problem on the slightly less than 50. Lots of great ladies here with varied experiences and ideas. Hard for me to realize that I turned 50, 20 years ago.
Michele Can you believe I walked away from buying the 3 tops I did for $12? After waiting in line for a few minutes and went back and got them. I am still mad I didn't buy a 4th, but it was a white T-shirt and I thought I would never wear it so I passed on it for $3. I think it was a regular $19. I originally bought the poncho style top for the awesome material, but after wearing it I couldn't cut it up. It is so cool and comfortable. I am still adjusting to the style.

I spent all weekend working on a blanket for my SIL and knitting socks. Also ordered fabric for some serious sewing.

The popcorn he was using was YEARS old- found a gunny sack full in the shop in one of the closets and decided to try popping some- came out great then used some of that seed plus ordered new seed for last year's crop. He did 8 100ft rows last year. This year they are 50ft long but not sure how many rows he planted, It will be enough for sure. He ended up with so many gallon jars of corn last year and still has some left.
No tractor work for me-gardening was work but it was also fun having all the cousins and family out helping- made the work go by faster. The only "crop" I HATED doing was chickens- 100 one weekend and another 100 the following weekend. So thankful a few of the older ladies at church loved to come out and help with all of the crops. I still can't stand the smell of raw chicken(or touching it).
The only year I haven't had a garden(of my own or helped with, like at home) was the year I got married to hubby #1- married in June and moved to Mobile that weekend- did not have a garden that year but we got transferred back out here that Dec. and he made me little planters in the spring. He just text me with pictures of his tomato crop. I need to go out and pick some of mine now- Nothing better than home grown ones(already picked and ate a cucumber as part of my lunch-eat them before even getting into the house)

He goes off walking in the sunshine for at least an hour every day and sits in the sun to read etc. Plus plenty of oily fish. This wooziness is since the bang on the head. He has been checked out thoroughly at the hospital and has had ECG and blood tests. I hope this latest manoeuvre has cured him.
I watched a French film tonight upstairs. Excellent. Loved it. Amazon Prime. Now I am on the top floor with the fan caressing my body. Lovely. I think if we had been sharing a small apartment I would have left by now. Our house is big enough for both of us and enables us to be pleased to see each other when we do. Light and heat are two things we disagree on.

Rita: I’m happy to see you’re here. I wonder why they wanted you to change your password. Enquiring minds want to know when we’ll be next. I had to change mine once in the past but don’t remember how long ago it was. :ohwell:
Lisa: For (((EGG))). Poor kitty.
Beth: I would keep an eye on gluten free foods if I was NOT on a GF (gluten free) diet at the advice of my doctor. Calories can be higher. DH was placed on a gluten free diet by his doctor and is doing well. He needs to be on a GF diet. BUT gluten free breads are often higher calorie than wheat breads, so I use wheat bread while he uses GF bread. :ohwell: We have had quite a learning curve. When I bake, I use GF products from Bob's Redmill.
Kate UK: I am also an obsessive knitter. I have no more baby blankets to knit in my future, so I knit cotton dish cloths when I get the fidgets.
Terri: I haven’t been to the hairdresser since Christmas. Let us know whether you’re pleased.
Rebecca: What a wonderful birthday cake. You are a great mom! :flowerforyou:
I had a lovely riding lesson yesterday and the possibility of a trail ride next Sunday. My riding helmet is worn to a nubbin and I’ve ordered a new one online. I want to refurbish my old one just in case the new one doesn’t get here in time. The store where I bought the one I have now is in Portland and is currently locked down. I called them, and they are having a terrible time getting product. Amazon fills a gap, but will any other merchant be open after all is said and done? Grocery stores, yes. Stores like Walmart, ACE & Costco, also yes. Local specialty stores? Time will tell.

Rebecca Happy birthday to your son! Wish I could help make that cake disappear. I haven't baked one for years. On the rare occasion, I bake, I do rich chocolate brownies with sour cherries mixed in.
Terri Great you have hairdressers open. Your length looks great but always nice to get a fresh trim.
Grandmallie Dental work is no fun and hope your new dentist is good, I went to the same dentist for 25 years and my teeth just kept getting worse despite great homecare. I went to new dentist that had to pull several because of bad root canals and poor crown work that the other guy had done over the years. The bill to restore what I had left was too much plus I needed at least a partial. I went to the specialist and he found more teeth that were bad to the bone, so I had them all pulled and went the premium denture route. My health improved (no more chronic gum infections) but dentures are a royal pain. I had to take the happy pill the last few visits to the dentist. It was still hard to bear.
Heather DH sounds like my old neighbor Zek. Old fart kept his place about 80 year around.

Maybe Jean needs to have 24/7 care brought in now, then she can enjoy her mother as her mother and not have to be her caregiver.
Have a great day everyone.

I agree!
In my husband's situation, they were pushing to send him home as early as possible on the assumption that I'd take leave from work and care for him. But I'm not a natural carer either, so he wasn't sent home until I had care lined up for him.
In my family, my grandmother was already reviewing care homes for herself when she got into her 70s. She had a plan! She was in a house, and downsized into a condo for several years, then with some help from my mother and uncle downsized into a fairly independent care home ... one of the ones on her list. It allowed residents to live on their own in 2 bedroom, 1 bedroom, or studio apartments, fitted with safety features. They could take advantage of the dining room for evening meals, but other meals were on their own, and a number of activities. If they weren't quite so independent, there was cleaning staff to do their apartments and nursing staff to help with medication and care. They could also arrange to have 24-hour care if necessary.
My parents are in a one-level, easy access 55+ complex now ... and have their eye on the same independent care home my grandmother went into for when they feel things are getting a bit much for them.
And we have our eye on the 55+ complex my parents are in! For whenever we are able to move to Canada.

I told Vince that we would take it up to DE with us in Sept. He said he didn’t think we were going. I told him “why not” “restaurants are open, the beaches are open” How do I know this? A friend of mine told me and she lives in Rehoboth Beach. My friend Eileen from grade school now in NC just went there for a week and she didn’t have to self-quarantine. Neither did my other friend, Rita, from NJ. I don’t know what’s up with him.

Just because things are open doesn't necessarily mean it's safe to go there.
Things are quite open around here, but I've stepped into a shop and stepped back out again if I felt it was too crowded with people. Theoretically I would be all right in there, but personally, I don't feel comfortable being close to people.
Also, I don't know how old Vince is, but Australia has an extra warning for older Australians:
https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/advice-for-people-at-risk-of-coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for-older-people
"People aged 70 years and over, people aged 65 years and over with chronic medical conditions, people with compromised immune systems ... are at greater risk of more serious illness if they are infected with coronavirus."
This site goes on to define chronic medical conditions:
https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert/advice-for-people-at-risk-of-coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for-people-with-chronic-health-conditions
You are at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 if you:- have had an organ transplant and are on immune suppressive therapy
- have had a bone marrow transplant in the past 2 years
- are on immune suppressive therapy for graft versus host disease
- have had blood cancer, in the past 5 years, including leukaemia, lymphoma or myelodysplastic syndrome
- are having chemotherapy or radiotherapy
You are at moderate risk of severe illness from COVID-19 if you have:- chronic kidney (renal) failure
- heart disease (coronary heart disease or failure)
- chronic lung disease, excluding mild or moderate asthma
- had cancer in the past 12 months
- diabetes
- severe obesity with a body mass index of 40 kg/m2 or more
- chronic liver disease
- some neurological conditions such as stroke or dementia
- some chronic inflammatory conditions and treatments
- other primary or acquired immunodeficiency
- poorly controlled hypertension (may increase risk)
Your level of risk depends on other factors, including your age, gender and whether you smoke.
So if Vince falls within the "greater risk" category, he may be feeling the need to be extra cautious. My husband falls within that category so we're very careful about where we go.
