@shanaber This is the one I have https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06X9MHMT2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_cDIigXQ33izEu I wish the lower handle was higher. Maybe Shadow is too short for it 🤣1

Beautiful pics @martaindale - happy 10th anniversary!
@shanaber that sounds like it was a bit stressful with Hobbes, but I am very jealous of those of you with dogs to keep you company on runs!
I’ve woken up to torrential rain here again (yes it is true what they say about England...) Contemplating another treadmill run, some more strength training (did some yesterday) or just curling back up in bed....9 -
@martaindale Pretty pictures!
Lots of stress here. I did body pump yesterday but bailed on my run. Tried to get out but ended up walking a mile and stopping. I feel so drained that I don’t know if I will make it out today either. I’m tired of adulting.7 -
Happy Anniversary @martaindale ! Nice run and looks like a great place to hike. How old is you daughter?
@shanaber I was wondering why you had mentioned my run being long. I mean, it IS longer than the 3.0 I've been doing lately, but.... Again, sorry about the run, but glad you enjoyed the walk. I know you were frustrated with Hobbes. I get really upset when Tippy won't come to me when I call. If I ever get another dog, I will have to do better with the recall training when it's young.
@marisap2010 I hear you. Adulting is harder that you think it will be when you're young. Hang in there and big hugs to you.
@Faebert Curling up in bed, listening to the rain, sounds wonderful to me. But, since this is a running group, I suppose I should say that you should curl up for a little while and then get up and do a treadmill run.4 -

@martaindale Happy anniversary! Great pictures!
Yesterday we did 5k on the access road behind the train tracks. Trees are really beautiful right now. Some are already bare - from last week to this, the big oaks behind the firehouse have gone from all colors to completely naked. Nice weather too, overcast while we ran then the sun came out for our walk.
Saturday is “speedwork” which basically means randomly trying to practice running fast. I should get a program of some sort but this is working okay for right now. Our thing this time was running the first two miles tempo then trying to run the third one hard, since our experience in 5k races has been that we can run two really fast miles but then we crap out. Part of this is that the third mile of our usual 5k race course is the hardest, it’s hilly and net uphill and the steepish downhills are over bad footing so you can’t really relax and flow during them. I was satisfied with our results yesterday, our previous best time during a race for that third mile was 9:30 and yesterday it was 9:04. Would like to have seen it under 9 but still an improvement.
There is a group of 5 teens - most are siblings I think - who hang out on bicycles every Saturday morning waiting for the trains to go by and taking photos of them. Usually they are busy and we pass them as the train is right there so we can’t speak because it’s too loud, but yesterday we were a little earlier so my husband asked them what their interest was, were they photographing graffiti or what? “Oh no,” says one boy, “definitely the locomotives, not the graffiti, it’s a shame someone would deface such beautiful trains!” I thought it was charming the way he called them locomotives, they are clearly very important to him! I have only the vaguest interest in trains but have been paying more attention since noticing the kids, the engine of the train which passes us every run is Norfolk Southern which is black and white livery with a horse on it.6 -
Happy anniversary @martaindale! Love the pictures!
Pretty nice run. Set out just to do 10 easy miles, but of coarse I couldn't keep it easy. Last 5 miles were sub 9, and I ended up doing 12 miles. Saw 2 good size bobcats on the trail no more than 10 ft. away from me. They were just frolicking in the woods with no care in the world.

@rheddmobile how sweet that they take pictures of the trains, we have one that comes through town and I was taking picture for graduation of Skip when he was coming by and she was standing by the track, he got right next to her and blew his whistle it was great. I need to find the picture the timing was perfect.
Signed up for the Oak Barrel HM, it's in April 2021. They did run it in person this year, I was able to register last week because I've registered for 3 of the last 5 years, but got up at 6:00 am to register Skip. It sells out quickly and they only let like 1300 in because it's in Lynchburg TN and the town is tiny.

@rheddmobile That's a great improvement on your time! You guys are doing great! Glad you got to talk to the teenagers. It's surprising to me that they have that interest.
Nice run @Scott6255 ! I think seeing bobcats that close would have scared me.
@skippygirlsmom Yeah for signing up for the race. I hope it gets to happen.

Both Runkeeper and RaceRoster have responded to my messages, and said that my results should show up on RaceRoster within 24-48 hours. Looks like everyone on our team has finished in Runkeeper - Go team!!!
I took a much needed rest day today.9 -
Happy anniversary @martaindale
Nice times @Scott6255 and @rheddmobile
Managed to pick a spot in between downpours to get 7.2 miles in and for some reason ran 5k and 10k PBs. Still slower than @Scott6255 and @rheddmobile though I'll take it. I have switched to Strava and not added the time prompts and just run to how I feel, maybe not knowing helps.9 -
Congratulations on the PBs @TheMrWobbly ! AMAZING!1
-
Congrats on the 5k and 10k PBs @TheMrWobbly. That is amazing that you got both in the same run!!!1
-
@shanaber - I feel for you. Hobbes is such a good dog but they all have their days when they frustrate you. I haven't had much success with a hands free leash so I'll let others advise on that.
@martaindale happy anniversary! Looks like a lovely place to hike and a nice goal to work towards hiking all the sections of it.
@marisap2010 sorry for your stress as well. You are doing well trying to handle it with various outlets, whether it's running or other activities. Hang in there.
@Scott6255 Wow I would love to see bobcats. Great run!
Great job to the rest of you as well. Well done @rheddmobile and @TheMrWobbly.
@polskagirl01 glad that you got a response for RaceRoster and enjoyed a rest day!

Race report!! Upstate Classic 5k (apologies for length!, putting it in a spoiler)The weekend started off stressfully (thanks for the good wishes everyone) but ended up well. I ran my first real, in-person race since January. Saturday I had a glitch with someone to watch my dog so that almost derailed things but got that resolved ... as well as various other minor delays to leaving town that resulted in not getting to packet pickup before it closed for the day. The race was pretty adamant that pickup up day of race was absolutely a last resort. Fortunately we had a friend meeting us for the race who was able to get there last minute and pick up our packets. Packets had a long sleeve T, which looks pretty nice but I haven't put it on yet, and the bib. I was running the 5k for which there was no medal, but there was a medal for the HM and full marathon, which were included in the packets for people running those so there would be no contact after the race.
Morning of the race we arrived early and parking was well organized - as was everything else. Start times were in waves of 24 groups with the full marathon going first, then the half, then the 5k. Within the 24 bigger groups, they had us in small waves A - K and you got into the staging area at your group time, then lined up according to letter by marked cones. So we were all spaced out with something like 5 across for the A wave who started at the same time on a ready go countdown, then the next 5 moved up and started 10 seconds later (B wave), and so on for the whole group of maybe 20-25. Then 3 minutes until the next group of 20ish. It was very well organized and flowed very well. I think it was a fantastic way to start because there was no bunching up and trying to get through a crowd. I hope this is a long-term change to racing actually. Everyone was required to wear a mask/buff through the starting area and asked to only take them down after they left the starting chute and were spaced out along the way. People cooperated very well - I think everyone was so eager to race finally. Oh, it was cold. About 26 degrees and there was a little bit of sleet as the half marathoners were starting, which fortunately did not last. I wore a long sleeve shirt, medium thick leggings, a jacket and gloves and headband (and buff). I knew I was likely going to get too hot with the jacket but I could not make myself take it off before I started.
Guys - I really tried to go with what I said the other day about running with my heart instead of in my head. All morning I just kept thinking just try, just try, just try. I took off feeling ok, but certainly not overly confident of how it was going to go given my last couple of months of low mileage and not very focused or consistent training. I tried to not look at my watch very much in mile one and just push by feel. I got to the mile marker and my Garmin was close to spot on, and saw that I had an 8:37 mile. That is a PR mile for me so I was excited but worried about hanging on. I had to take my jacket off and tie it around my waist, which slowed me a bit. The turnaround was at 1.5 miles and I was very happy to be on the back half of it. I got to mile 2 and it was still under a 9 min/mile pace at 8:56. I started to get in my head about it with calculations of what I needed to hang on for a PR. I did my best to talk myself down and just push, push, push as my coach is well known to say. The last half mile or so I was definitely fading and it was a struggle - I wanted so badly to get a PR but it felt like it was slipping away. We turned a corner and I could see we were heading towards the finish but it was the only hill of the race - not even a hill really, but a gradual incline. It really hurt and I wanted to quit so badly, but the finish was coming. My Garmin data shows I slipped to my slowest pace of about 10:39 here at 2.9 miles in. When it leveled off I kicked it for what I was worth to the finish - ending with an 8:03 pace in the last little bit. And the time on my watch said 28:14. I knew my previous PR was 28:30 something (from 2 years ago) so I teared up a bit as I tried to recover and just hoped that my timing and the race timing would be in agreement.
I was the first of my group of friends to finish so I went through the finish chute area, got a water bottle and walked back to where I could watch the finish line for the others. As I waited the results were available online and I saw my official time was 28:12 and I was 4th in my age group! So excited!!! About 10-15 minutes later two of my friends finished the 5k, and then a few minutes later our (fastest) friend finished his half at an impressive 1:32. Also, the first of the marathoners to complete the first loop had come through just as I was finishing the 5k (it was a Boston qualifier marathon and there were some impressive times). We then waited for our second friend to finish her half, but at this point we were all getting really cold. The wind had picked up and with our wet clothes we were freezing. She finally came around and just made her goal time of 1:50. We had one final friend but knew it would be a bit given his start time and projected time so we went to get our post-race box lunch (we were able to choose a type of sandwich ahead, and the box contained a sandwich, an apple, and a brownie. They were all wrapped and the brownie particularly really hit the spot. We went to the car and scarfed our food and changed clothes and warmed up then headed back out for the last friend - who was just finishing as we got back to the finish. This was his very first half marathon race and the first time he ever ran the distance was 1 week ago. With no training! And he pulled out a time that was not at all shabby (in fact pretty close to my own PR time, but who's comparing, lol).
So it was a very successful day for our group and a well run race experience. I'm really happy and excited that I was able to run well - I hadn't even realized how much I wanted that PR until I was doing it (and I'll admit the fact that my trainer was one of my group at the race was a factor in me wanting to get it and show him). It feels good.7 -
So many great runs this weekend!
@quilteryoyo My daughter is 12.
We have a long list of family bucket list trips. One is hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc. That goal plus hiking being one of the activities everyone in the house liked has spurred us to find some more trails. It would be summer of 2022 at the earliest, but we are starting to realize that once she graduates high school some of these trips will become harder to do. Crazily enough summer 2027 doesn't seem that far away anymore.5 -

11/15: 8.51 miles
51.52/100 miles completed for November
1227.54/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement
I finally ran my leg of the Ekiden challenge. I ended up running 8.5 miles. It was a gorgeous day and I felt really good. I didn't have my fastest 10K time, but it was decent enough especially considering how hard I ran last weekend. I felt like I could have run further today, but I am still trying to recover so I thought 8.5 was plenty. It's nice after training and running so hard in a race to still enjoy running just for the sake of running. I have to admit that Wednesday's run was pretty tough, and Thursday's was better, but still hard. Today's run was so much better. I am hoping for some nice weather this week and hoping to have some nice runs.

@TheMrWobbly - congrats on your PBs, especially getting 2 in the same run!
@Scott6255 - great pace on that long run! I love that you get to see bobcats frolicking! You need to have your phone ready so you can snap us a picture next time!

Congrats on the 5k and 10k PBs @TheMrWobbly. That is amazing that you got both in the same run!!!
It probably says a lot about my previous PBs Both 5k splits were the exact same time at 28:05 which is positive.
Superb race @katharmonic and I am very jealous you got a real race in and hit your goals with style!5 -
@shanaber
I use a padded hands free leash. Look into trekking belts. They're better for canicross or simply running with a dog, in my opinion. A lot of them also have leg loops to keep the belt from riding up onto your lower back. They can get kinda pricey, but definitely worth it.
This is the one I've been eye balling from Hurtta. I have a very leash reactive dog that does not like other dogs, so I personally don't like the emergency release. What I usually do is take a strong leash coupler and replace that piece in front with that, so I don't have to worry about my boy breaking free and hurting someone or himself. Then I take a double ended bungee lead and attach one end to the ring in the center of the coupler, and the other end to his harness.

I had hills on my schedule today and decided to try the larger forest that I needed to drive to, as it has a mile-long flat segment followed by a big dip down and then up the other side. I used the flat for my warmup & cooldown, and went out and back on the hilly part so there were 2 different hills, depending on whether I was coming or going. 6 repeats meant I did each uphill segment 3x with a little jogging in between to recover. It was good.Also the sun is shining today, it's wonderful!8
