Double posting because I was just thinking as I wrote the above post about preparing for my upcoming 5k race. And how much 5k races are a huge mental challenge for me, I get so freaked out that I can't hold the pace and I want to give up. Then I go over to facebook and saw this - so true. Just go out and run.

Hey @brittanystebbins95 welcome back to running.
@katharmonic yay for in person races – happy birthday
@Kimbeers great start on C25K
@quilteryoyo I figure if I’m chilly when I leave the house I’m good for the cold, if I’m warm or comfortable I get too hot. It’s a science that I can’t figure out ha ha today was 45 I wore shorts, a light long sleeve tech shirt and gloves, gloves came off at mile 2 and I was fine.
@polskagirl01 I had a goldendoodle want to run with me today, she was a pup and all excited to join. I had a vague idea what house she lived it and finally mom came out to see where she was…ah like ¼ mile up the street with me. Pretty pictures
@hamsterwheel6 lots of folks out of sorts with the election

Thanks for all your positive feedback, and I appreciate the compliments on my speed, but for those who can't quite understand why I'm upset that I'm not faster when I'm clearly pretty speedy, can I give you a little context, which may also help some of you with your running goals: When I got into running back in 2008, my goal was to run 5km in 30 minutes. 10 years ago it was to run a sub-2 hour half marathon. Seven years later I finally managed to break 1:50, and running 1:45 is my latest goal. This just shows that anyone can improve if they keep working at it.
@Faebert that's really pretty. Hang in there, you're making progress slowly but surely. Keep it up.
@marisap2010 the time change is rough! I wanted to put off my run until after work today but I knew how unmotivated I'd be to get out in the dark. It's hard enough to get out and walk the dog, and putting on both of our lighted vests and layers, etc., feels so not worth it sometimes. Good job keeping on your training plan!

I didn't have my normal strength training session today because my trainer is on vacation. I'm sure he expects that I'll do a workout anyway, but I say we're both on vacation. I really didn't want to get out and run either but it is really beautiful out and over 50 degrees so how could I not. I started out slowly but picked up the pace - my first mile was 11:04 and the last was 9:10!
That's great, but I seem to be getting slower regardless of what I do to try to get faster. I'm slower than most despite being in what should be close to the fastest age/gender group. It is frustrating to see new runners twice my age go out and run their first marathon faster than my PR. Add that some of them are heavier than me and I just don't understand why I suck so much.6 -
@brittanystebbins95 welcome back! Just take it slow and easy. You will be pushing your baby in a running stroller in no time
@avidkeo Congrats on registering for a real race! I know pushing that button must have been scary.
@ContraryMaryMary that HM in Kerikeri and getting to stay in a house within running distance of the start line sounds amazing!
Started feeling pretty crummy yesterday..just tired, headache, sore throat..(I am NOT sick). Took some Tylenol, Airborne tablet, felt a little better before bed. Woke up an hour later than normal (I am NOT sick), and acted like I was feeling normal, even though I was feeling about the same. Went through my pre-run morning ritual (I am NOT sick). Got outside and decided just to run a very slow 10K. First 4 miles were slow (about 15 seconds slower than normal), then as the sweat started pouring out of me, I felt better and pushed the last 2 miles a bit harder. Ended with a normal overall pace (I am NOT sick).

Same. I've been around the same speed since I started. I can't break a 30 min 5k. I can't break 2:30 HALF marathon. I have learned to accept this is the best I can do and I will always be a middle of the pack runner. I've only seen improvement in my shorter trail times because my first season was learning how to run trails.8 -
Nice run @katharmonic ! Love the running with heart quote.
@Scott6255 I'm glad you are NOT sick and hope you feel better!

Ha ha @quilteryoyo I was going to say the same thing to @Scott6255 glad he's not sick1

Your speed is YOUR speed - not anyone else's. Some are faster; some are slower.
I once ran 2 miles in 14:40. I'm a little bit slower now, and 42 years older. (All right, I'm a lot slower.)
Once you get to the point where you've maximized your physical, mental, and emotional speed capability, you are who you are as a runner. If the maximum were not defined as the absolute best you can do, it wouldn't be the maximum.
I know I have not yet raced to my "absolute" best time. But I also know I have run every race as hard as I could on race day, given whatever limitations I'm dealing with on that day. I may not be "happy," but I need to be satisfied.7 -

I love this! Belated birthday wishes @katharmonic! And all the best for the 5K. Run it from your heart x2 -
So I find this age/pace discussion interesting. I didn't start running, had never run before except when I had to as a kid, until 2012 when I was 57 (yes I will be 65 in a month). I had no idea about pace or racing or any of that, I just ran and tried to improve how far I could go without feeling like I was dieing. A friend entered me in my first HM, my first race ever and ran it with me. We finished in 2:38 and I didn't know or care if it was good or bad time, I finished and I didn't die. The next year I ran a small 5K and finished in 34m and got 1st in my age group. I have run quite a few HMs now and was able to improve my time down to 2:15 and also got my 5K time to 29m and my 10K time to a 59m. I had NO idea it was anything to set as a goal. I was just running to improve my times. I have since had a few injuries and other issues and I may never see those times again but I am still running to improve on my 'current' times/pace. I have heard from others that you have around 7-10 years to improve your pace when running consistently and then it levels off. I am not sure about that but I hope I can still improve. My focus though is to keep running and not get injured again.8

quilteryoyo wrote: »@Camaramandy648 Big news on my front is that the surgery got postponed due to the increase in CoVID patients. They won't reschedule until the numbers go down. Glad you are doing good. I was asking about you a couple of days ago and someone said you were posting on Instagram and were out there running crazy amounts of miles.
Welcome @April_M_2015 . You'll love this group. Very supportive and friendly and inspiring and.....
@quilteryoyo oh nooooo !!!!!!! I'm so sorry! I would guess that the postponing would be an additional stress. Dangit. I want you to be full and have peace and no anxiety! I will be praying for this!
haha yep, IG and crazy miles. Not a lot of rest for this momma. I mean I do sleep. But every morning at 4am running then, on certain days I am running doubles, and then on other days, like today, I run very early, work, care for kids, then lift.
between all of that, the house still has to get cleaned and groceries bought, etc. I'm managing it, though! The teenager started OT back on Tuesday. I think it's good but the way covid cases are going, i don't think she'll be able to stay in long. She's very happy when we have all three therapies going - thriving. She really needs this too, because it teaches functionality for adult-life. But also we can't be in situations where everybody is at risk. They are taking so many precautions but I still think they will shut down again.
Anyway, @quilteryoyo I am thinking of you!3 -
@Camaramandy648 3rd in AG without even trying....gotta love it!
@katharmonic beautiful pics, but looks really cold. I'm a wimp.
@Scott6255 man, that was a tough day, though! Halloween was a lot of fun - I thought I was tired that day, but Sunday is when I knew I was REALLY tired. Ran ten that day then lifted then more movies. Lord. I needed sleep so bad.
@rheddmobile I LOVE the photos. I am excited about my long run this weekend because the weather will be nice and it's 22 miles of exploration and wildin'. lol. I can't wait.
@martaindale @hamsterwheel6 and everybody else that congratulated me - THANK YOU!
I am almost 100 posts behind and can't read them all right now
I miss you all. I miss reading about your lives. And also at this very second I am thinking of one of @Avidkeo 's cakes. I would do a lot of things for a piece of cake right now. I think I have a reese's somewhere, haha.
And @Tramboman YES! ALWAYS half FULL. NEVER half empty. I feel that on such a deep, personal level lately. I'm always half full. I am a cup. I've become a cup. what the heck.
I had a dream about my mom last night. She was listening to me pour my heart out to her. She let me say everything. She was all grace and power and integrity and class. I was raw, tenacious, relentless, and raging at everything. Grief. Social and racial injustice. Brokenness.
She stared at me a long time like she was staring into my soul (you know how moms can do that) and then said, "Mandy. Did you think it would be easy?"
I woke up before the 4am alarm and went. I had everything I needed in that moment. It was a good run. A lot of fun, too! My fastest pace was 3:31/ mi. but of course, that pace doesn't last long. It was just cool to see the measurement for a couple minutes. I shouldn't have slowed down or stopped! The past two days have been really nice running weather. Shorts and tanks, shorts and sleeves.
@rheddmobile I run with a cap every morning now. It's easier to avoid the traffic lights plus I look like I just rolled out of bed (because I did) and nobody needs to see that mess, lmao.
anyway. Cannot say enough. I miss you all so much.3 -
Thanks @Camaramandy648 ! You are doing so much! I don't know how you do it all.0
-
@rheddmobile Nice long run!
@ContraryMaryMary Yes! I know you will crush it at the Kerikeri HM! Can't wait to hear about it!
@Faebert It all does come back, Nice pic!
@Scott6255 Nope, NOT sick
@Camaramandy648 You are cracking me up about Nevada - Thanks for that.
About pace/age - I ran for awhile in my 30's then stopped. Became more of a gym rat. Then that had to go due to finances so started running again about a 3-4 years ago. My pace has improved, and I have been trying to get faster - BUT it seems that I may be reaching my threshold (I also have one completely blocked coronary artery - so that maybe the reason). Currently not trying to increase - just running because I can.5 -
I’ve been running for about 8 years and have seen a gradual improvement, with steps back at times too. I’m seeing some improvements recently, which is why I am purposefully focusing on continuing to improve those times. I don’t know how long this window will last, but I want to capitalize on it.
I sure don’t have @Camaramandy648’s energy
though. Reading your posts make me tired!
Got some pretty disappointing news last night, so I went to the gym to do weights and walk on the indoor track since it was a non-running day. Made me feel a little better, but I sure am looking forward to my run tonight to get those feel-good endorphins going.5 -
Thanks everyone I'm feeling better today!
@marisap2010 sorry about your disappointing news. I'll bet (hope) your run last night made you feel a little better. I know it always makes me feel better after a run.3 -
Glad you are feeling better @Scott6255 !
Sorry about your disappointing news @marisap2010 . Hang in there.1 -
Went for a short trail run after work yesterday. I was going to do 5 miles but it got dark faster than I expected and I didn't have a light with me so I settled for 4 convincing myself that those 4 trail miles were the equivalent to 5 road miles. Lol!
I started running when I was 48 years old. I have only gotten slower but I'm still out there moving. I've also increased my distance and I think converting those fast-twitch muscles to slow-twitch muscles is a factor. One that is not easily reversed. Also, as we age our fast twitch muscles decrease in size and number. That's why most football players decline after the age of 30.
