December 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

It's miserable today. Very dark and wet. I went out and managed 3k. It was wonderful! (I'm a crazy who likes running in the rain!)
Legs are feeling good, still a bit tight but better. I'm definitely putting it all down to increased distance and standing. I did some yoga yesterday and that really helped. Thinking I should do some everyday just to get some flexibility back.
Hal thinks I'm over training. I think there's been an update in the app because in the past he only complained if you did different distances. But now I'm doing different pace as well. Today was supposed to be a recovery run at around 8min/k. I can't run that slow. That's my walking pace (well almost) so I ran a little slower than my "I can run this pace forever pace" . Nope not happy. Oh well. I'm said I was aiming for a 2:30hm because my PB of 2:03 was 2 years ago on a downhill course. This one is on a flat course, and I'm coming back from injury. I just like sitting at around 6min/k. It feels natural and good.
Thanks for all the replies to the strength training. I'm going to keep doing it, because it's mostly leg, glute and core work, with a few arm exercises in for balance. It's just to help the muscle mass, and strengthen them. But going to try add some yoga too. Even 10 minutes will make a big difference.6 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »@polskagirl01 Sounds like you had a good "race." It is different when you are by yourself. Beautiful place for a run.
@Tramboman You are so consistent. Wonder where the robins went?
If they went to Florida, I wish they'd take me...1 -

I feel like I've been hibernating. Hypersomnia.
Got out and did my run with Speed Demon. She was anxious. It's been a long time since that was the case. I think we both still enjoyed it. Finished a full 6 mi with the warm up and cool down. 4.5 mi run. Some walking. Very achy. But I'm enjoying building up the habit. We're focusingon time on our feet instead of mileage.
I love my coach. We were discussing the 12 days of Christmas challenge. I mentioned that I'd probably break up the mileage during the day.
"Yes, you are NOT allowed to go out and run 10 miles all at once. "
I feel like he's protecting me from myself and injuries. Because we aren't always the best at that9 -
@katharmonic Glad you got your run done early and can relax the rest of the day. Enjoy.
Nice run @Avidkeo ! Glad your legs are feeling good. I don't think Hal is every happy, poor guy.
@mbaker566 Glad you enjoyed your run. Love that mural and Speed Demon looks so happy to be out. I love your coaches attitude too. He sounds like a good one.
I did go to Urgent Care this afternoon. I got there before they opened and there was a line waiting at the door. I waited until the line started moving before I got out. They were really good. You went in, they gave you paperwork to fill out, then you went back to your car to fill them out and they called you on your cell phone with it was your turn. So, no one was exposed to anyone else for very long. It was about an hour wait. I took a nap. LOL The results were that I tested positive for CoVID! Couldn't be worse timing. But, my fever is gone, and, for the time being, I am feeling fine. I will call the surgeon in the morning and see what the plan is going forward. Fingers crossed that I have a mild case. No idea how I got it. I am so careful when I am out and about. It's frustrating.12 -
Happy birthday, @Scott6255 and @shanaber!0
-
@quilteryoyo Oh no!! So sorry to hear you tested positive just as things were coming together for your surgery. I hope you continue to feel ok and recover quickly.1

25.7/100 Miles
12/1: 5.1 Miles
12/3: 3.6 miles
12/4: 10 miles
12/5: 7 miles
Did what was supposed to be my Thursday threshold run on Saturday. I wasn't sure how my legs would feel after doing my 10 mile long run the day before. It was totally fine. I did the run and actually kept up a slightly faster pace than what was on my plan.
I broke out a new pair of shoes and it was definitely time. I think the extra cushion helped out my legs too. I'm consistently shocked when I see people mention having 500 miles on a pair of shoes. I am a steady 250 miler. I can usually even tell when I'm almost to 250 just by how my knees feel when I'm starting to run. Don't know how you guys do it. I go through a lot of shoes but I just can't push it. Maybe 300 max.4 -
Oh, @quilteryoyo I'm so sorry to hear you tested positive! I hope that your symptoms will not get any worse and that you will recover very quickly. The timing is terrible, and I just really hope that your it will not be a big increased risk for you in whatever the course of action is going forward. You are in my thoughts. Did your parents get tested also?
@martaindale I have the same thing with shoes. My knees definitely tell me when it's time and it's usually about 300 miles for me too. I pushed it too long on this last pair and I am so relieved to have a new cushiony pair again and felt like I noticed a difference with my long run and faster run the day after.2 -
December Goal Do something every day....
12/1 2.50
12/2 3.05 and deep mucked the chicken coop
12/3 1.35
12/4 4.06
12/5 1.00
12/6 4.05
Total 16.01
@quilteryoyo I am so sorry-as you say this is terrible timing. I hope your symptoms are mild....or NONE!
2 -
Oh @quilteryoyo, I'm sorry to hear of your positive result - the disease is awful (fingers crossed for a mild dose) and the timing is also awful.
And big hugs to all of you who are struggling with cold and dark, not to mention aches and pains. Sending healing thoughts and vitamin D laced vibes your way!
I ran my final half marathon for the year yesterday at Omaha Beach. It was a flat course but challenging in that there was 2km on sand (fortunately it was early in the run so legs were still fresh and also the tide was out which mean harder sand underfoot). It was a stunning course, all sunshine and beachy, but it was hot and super humid.
After my two big halves last month, my coach told me to treat it as a training run, which I did. So nice to have the pressure off and to be able to cruise a little as I wasn't feeling that great - been battling a wee virus for a week which has made me feel lethargic (and grumpy as all get out).
While the course is marketed as flat and fast, there is quite a bit of narrow path through the sand dunes which makes it tricky if you need to pass someone - I know I got stuck behind someone last year and found it really frustrating - so not having any pacing pressure was great.
However, reluctance and lethargy only last so long when the starter's gun sounds and you're surrounded by 1500 other excited runners. I ended up running much faster than I expected. My only plan was to go sub-2 hours, which I did with a 1:55:55, which was good enough for 7th in my age group (of 79).
It was hard though. I felt great for the first 5km, even with the sand; middling for the second, which featured a brisk head wind; the third quarter had some shade so wasn't too bad; and while the final chunk had tailwind for a few kilometres, I was getting really hot and started to feel nauseous around the 18-19km mark. Fortunately, as I wasn't 'racing' I could dial back my speed until I felt a bit better - which I did, speeding up again for a fast finish.
Treated myself with an ice cream at the finish - best recovery food on a hot and sticky day!
Photos show the stunning scenery and exactly how hot and bothered I was at the end.
Coming up over the sand dunes at the 6km mark after running on sand for 2km.
Nearing the finish - I had stopped feeling nauseous at this point and knew the end wasn't too far away
Melting as I crossed the finish line. Around 26 degrees Celsius and 70+ percent humidity.13 -
Great race, @ContraryMaryMary !!!
@quilteryoyo well that shoud win an award for bad timing, although I'm not sure there's really any good time for catching a virus like this. Praying for a speedy, smooth recovery. You're in great shape and hopefully that will help. I hope your parents didn't catch it.1 -
1207-5.2k, total-10.2k goal-70k
Another shortish run in the morning. Was supposed to get 10km over the weekend but apparently that didn't happen. Welp. At least I'm doing something, which is better than nothing. The sun is coming out so late these days, I wasn't out until after 7:30 and still got treated to the nicest sunrise. Too cold to take pictures. Maybe some other time, like when spring rolls around...
@ContraryMaryMary Congrats on a great half! That looks like pretty challenging terrain.
@quilteryoyo Really sorry to hear that, the timing is awful. Hoping for a quick recovery and that the surgery doesn't get postponed too much. Thinking of you.
@shorkster Well, after C25K there is this other thing called Bridge to 10k...
@polskagirl01 Congrats on your race!4 -
I'm sorry @quiletyoyo however it is Christmas and therefore we cannot accept you having Covid in this festive season, you are just going have to get better instantly. Stay awesome! Thinking of you.
Happy belated birthday @shanaber and @Scott6255
I remember repeating so many days of C25K @shorkster and even redoing a 15 minutes run because I came up less than a minute short of 15 minutes. Even now a year on from finishing C25K I run 10k regularly though some days I get part way and just don't feel it and walk. Listen to your body, don't try and make it do something if it is not ready to push that far.
Great race @ContraryMaryMary
Skipped out on running this weekend sorting Christmas decs on Saturday and going for a bike ride on Sunday. I wanted to get my first ever 50k ride and ended up with my first ever 60k ride as I got lost 🤦♂️ Long stretches were down the seafront which was lovely and I finished at the best hot chocolate shop in the land where my beautiful wife drove to and met me. A great weekend that just needs a run today to get back in the groove.12 -
Happy belated birthday, @Scott6255 and @shanaber!!!
I’m so sorry to hear about your results, @quilteryoyo. I hope your symptoms remain mild.
@ContraryMaryMary Your pictures are awesome! Congrats!
We had new arrivals at the prison last week, and there was conflicting info Friday about whether some of them had tested positive before transferring. The deputy warden told me he had not heard anything about anyone testing positive, so I am really hoping the person who shared the news was just really misinformed from gossiping. Anyway, really irresponsible. I had to do intake screenings on them, but I had all of my PPD and kept distance during it. I stayed home all weekend as a precaution so that if it was true, I wouldn’t inadvertently pass anything along at the gym or store. Hoping to get clarification when I go in this morning.
In a general funk about a lot of stuff. I didn’t feel like running at all this weekend, but I did walk both days (outside, near no one). I have eaten horribly lately, so I meal prepped for the week so I can get back on track somewhat.8 -
@quilteryoyo Oh no! So sorry! Hopefully you will have a mild case and the surgery postponment is minimal.
@ContraryMaryMary and @polskagirl01 great races!2 -
@quilteryoyo how is your dad doing? Worried about him since you thought the VA might be where you were exposed.1
-
@quilteryoyo oh no, so sorry! Hope it is a quick, mild case.1
-
hope it's a mild case @quilteryoyo
@marisap2010 hopefully, it was just gossip.
nice looking races, people. high fives.1 -
I'm going for 40 miles this month!
December Total: 11.31 miles
December Goal: 40 miles
Remaining Miles Needed: 28.69
2020 Goal - 230 miles (an all-time high – previous high year 180.75)
2020 Miles YTD: 200.55
12-07 1.25 miles 43 degrees + 8 mph = feels like 34 degrees. Working the ER made for a short night sleep.. but the streak goes on, and the streak goes on. .
I hope everyone has a great, strong and healthy week.
Run well my friends ~ run well

Nice race @ContraryMaryMary . Glad you were able to have a real, in person one. It is a gorgeous place to be running. You did great! You were shining at the end.
@TheMrWobbly Great ride. Getting lost isn't always a bad thing.
@marisap2010 I hope they didn't transfer anyone who was positive and not let you know. That would be very irresponsible. Hoping you stay well.
I'm pretty sure dad has CoVID too. I'm trying to figure out how to get him, and mom, tested. He said about 2 this morning he almost called 911 because he couldn't breathe, but he got over it and went back to sleep...so that's good. He said food started tasting funny and he had no appetite starting Saturday, which is when my symptoms started to. Therefore, the VA doctor is probably the culprit. I'm hoping the fact that we were all masked that the exposure was minimum. I really don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I can hope. I'm so much more worried about mom and dad than I am myself. Please send all of your positive vibes and prayers this way. We could use them.

Well done, @ContraryMaryMary It was nice of them to build that causeway just for you to run on.

@quilteryoyo it looks like viral load is a component of how "bad" you get covid, which is why wearing masks is important. It reduces the viral load drastically.
From my understanding the vaccine(s) will work this way as well so you may still get covid but it will be mild. I'm not a medical person at all so I could be mistaken. I've read a lot & listened to medical experts.3 -
12/1 – 6 miles
12/2 – 10K day
12/3 – 4 miles

@katharmonic sorry it took so long to get back to you. When you register there is a place to select shipping, let me see what she said the cost was and get back to you. I think the plan is to ship the sweatshirt and all medals at once in January timeframe, but don’t remember what she said.
@quilteryoyo I have the same issue with my Garmin unless I’m using the GPS it doesn’t count my steps correctly if my arm isn’t swinging. I’m so sorry to hear about your test results. UGH! I hate this for you.
@Scott6255 happy birthday HM
@shanaber Happy Birthday – a little late
@rheddmobile sweet woodchuck
@shorkster I’ve been running for a while and had a few injuries and a surgery that set me back. I finally had to say okay I can’t do speed and distance at the same time I need to pick one, so for me it was distance. I have a friend who qualified for the Olympics time trails for the marathon and we had a long talk about this. She said go with your distance because with distance comes speed, but working speed will not add distance. Since Aprilish my long run went from 2 miles to 13 and my speed has dropped around 2 minutes a mile, I’m still around 12ish a mile (I was once was 9 min miles) but hey I’m 59 years old and know it takes time. Don’t get discouraged and everyone has a bad day, even the pros. You are doing great.
Skip went back last week to her summer job, that told her they had work for her over winter break and the “lead” girl told her their schedule was pretty full, though the workers said they are killing them because half the staff quit. My girl is a worker so she said thanks and went directly to Dunkin Donuts and they hired her on the spot. She even said sure when they asked if she would work mostly starting at 6:00 am, she’s on day 4 and is liking it so far. She said I wouldn’t want to do this shift forever but for 5 weeks until I leave for school is good. They have her on schedule for 32 hours a week, which is great for her “play” money when she’s back at school, also giving her 2 days a week off. When she leaves in the morning I say “time to make the donuts” ha ha

Short pre-work run this morning. It was 40F this morning but felt colder for some reason. I've done a few runs t this temp but today I never took my gloves off and really never felt properly warmed up. At least it was short and then I could get in a warm shower!
@ContraryMaryMary Great race report. I love reading about all the places people race!
@skippygirlsmom That's interesting what your coach said about speed vs. distance. I don't have a coach so totally winging it over here and listening to what the more seasoned runners on this group have to say. Totally anecdotal, but I have definitely noticed this. I mix in a little speed work usually because my training plans will include it, but I almost think it's partially to keep me from getting bored and to challenge my mental blocks.3 -
@martaindale Alana works for a coaching company and local race directors, they were my daughter's coach in high school, I'm not serious enough to hire a coach but she (and all of them) have become friends and are a great source of advice. I'm trying to work on my speed a bit now, Skip (my daughter) paced me on our 4 miles the other day, I didn't like it she's too fast ha ha.2

@skippygirlsmom Only problem is, I would eat the donuts too. In fact my MFP log got bombed yesterday when I was surprised by hubby & son bringing me one from downtown. It was so good though.
@quilteryoyo even if it wasn't the VA doctor, I don't get what the point was for putting patients at risk of catching whatever it was. Even if it wasn't COVID19, you'd think any respiratory illness could be a problem for people who already have some reason to come see a doctor. Perhaps a call to the office to let them know maybe doc should be retested (or just stay home when sick, why do we have to say this out loud to a doctor in 2020 of all times)?3 -
@polskagirl01 I agree with you about @quilteryoyo and COVID what doctor comes to work sick, seriously. About the donuts, I told her no matter what I say you are not to bring home any donuts, well unless I'm crying, then bring me one. She LOVES their sugar mixed with a little coffee so she's really trying hard not to have one every day. ha ha3
