Tracey - your genetics comment reminded me of when my brother, father and I went to my father’s Uncles funeral. We were walking in and I heard someone say I’m not sure but I think that must be Raymond (my dad) because that girl is the spitting image of his ex wife. We had a good laugh!

Lisa - I have a quilt on my bed my M Grandmother made for me the year we were married. The one I have is very worn in places, but the Wright of it is perfect. I have a few quilts from her. I would love to put the wedding ring quilt on the bed, but the backing is white and my husband sweats and I’m scared it will be ruined.

I’ve only uploaded photos from my phone, but haven’t tried today. Maybe they have a hiccup.

Kelly - I hope you have an amazing trip!

Allie - I’m so happy to read you had a decent night sleep.

Annie - our dreams take some deciphering at times. I regularly dream about a boss I haven’t had for 10 years now.

Rita - I always feel so bad when I miss a few days on here. I try to go back but sometimes I cheat and check what Barbara has written to people to decide if I need to or not.

Vicki - I envy you all the visiting, you are so blessed. We are still under outside gatherings only. I figure they’ll lift that when it is nice enough to gather outside.

Rebecca - that picture on top looks like Athena. Is that her Dad or Uncle?
Genetics fascinate me. I like that we can see others in one person.
In 2012, my daughter was 21 and we went home to NB. She had been away from there since she was 6. She went bowling with one of her cousins and this stranger came up to her and said you must be Mike’s granddaughter, you look just like him. Her looks are all her fathers side but her personality is all me.
Our other daughter is opposite, looks like me, had her Father’s personality.

Flea - I wouldn’t worry about the vaccine. Probably 85% of the people in our facility, residents and staff had no reactions at all, some not even the sore arm.
Some had a reaction to the first and not the second and some the second not the first. I think they all work, it just affects everyone differently.

My cousin has her dog trained to ring a bell to be let out too. It’s just a large bell on the door handle though.

Cooler here today and a bit of snow in the air.

Today is International Women’s day and to celebrate our local country station was playing mostly female artists, some old ones, Loretta, Dolly, Reba, etc.
I texted my daughter to tell her as Michaela (5) only likes female singers.
My daughter responded with, “she’s grocery shopping”
    I said, “that sounds funny”
My daughter responded again with “Ryan was driving obviously”.
I laughed because it sounded like this little girl was out making sure the family had food for the week.
It is Michaela’s only regular outing since she learned how to wear her mask properly. She even has her own little sanitizer in her purse she carries.

I am watching the Voice, covered under a blanket and have a hot cup of tea. I’m still cold though.

The kid with the necklace is Athena's Uncle Owain, (my youngest son), and the kid with the sword is Athena's daddy Patrick.💖

I am amazed by how kids get a part of the family tree like Owain looks a lot like his great great uncle Elijah.

Years ago, I was in my hometown and I had someone come up to me and say, "I don't know you but I know who your mom is".
I recently bought myself a viewer/scanner for slides(and I just got one for 8mm movies today) to transfer all the old pictures and movies from my grandma. I posted a picture of my mom and everyone thought it was a picture of me in high school. They were shocked when I told them it was my mom. Even had one of my cousins think it was my grandma(her great grandma). There is some resemblance with the two of them but a LOT with mom and I.

I love all the genetic stories. It just fascinates me.

Rebecca- that is an incredible resemblance of Owain and his Great Uncle.

    Okie - that’s funny!

Debbie - my eldest and I have that problem. It is hairstyle and clothes that tell us apart.

:) Had a great day with dancing, yard ]work, zoom meetings, knitting while riding the exercise bike, and dog walking. It was a very satisfying day, but not much to talk about.

:)Heather, I listened to a podcast this morning about haggis and thought about you and your Burns Day celebration. Apparently real haggis is illegal in the US and people have tried many creative ways to smuggle it in.

Did 30 min HIIT on the elliptical and then walked on the treadmill for 30 min. Tomorrow I’ll do some sort of strength training DVD

M – the condo assoc making it hard to rent isn’t so much of a money making thing as the fact that there are some people here who live here year round. They’ve had to deal with things like someone renting to a party animal, someone renting to a druggie (yes, that’s happened), things like that. I guess I can understand their hesitancy about having someone here who might take advantage or destroy something. Also, it’s probably not going to be a young person who would be able to rent for a minimum of 30 days, an older couple is most likely retired and more considerate. Admitted, that’s not always the case of all elderly people, but the chances of an elderly couple being more thoughtful is greater

Heather – you are so right that short term renters can be insensitive.

KJ – when we go away for a weekend or really a short period of time, we have someone come in to watch/feed/administer pills to the cats. When we’re down here we have a neighbor who checks things out for us. Most people who would want to rent here at the condo want to rent for Jan. Feb. march maybe April, thereabouts. Vince likes to come for the Daytona 500 which is in Feb. At one time we did have a renter who would leave for a week so we could stay here in Feb, but I always felt bad. Safe travels

Heather – do you think you’d share the recipe for your brownies? Sounds like they’re amazing

SuebDew – I shudder to think that we even might by the slightest chance be breathing the fat back into our bodies. Please no!!!!!!!

Christina – welcome. I don’t think there’s anything special that you need to do because everyone is different. Like for me not eating at night is a sure-fire way for me to start to lose. Does it happen? Not always much to my dismay. Yes, portion out/weigh your food, exercise, log meticulously, it’ll come off. Not quickly at all. How I wish it would come off as fast as it goes on.

Flea – Now I have the job. Vince is more of a homebody. He (until now, I think he’s finally come around) has had a real hard time accepting this as “our” place and not “his mother’s”. The kids are welcome to use it, but believe it or not, none of them has shown any interest in it. If Pete ever got transferred to this area (which I doubt would happen), it would be a great transitional home for them. But I guess it’s not to be. Vince likes to go to the Daytona but he also really likes his home. He does A LOT of decorating for Halloween and then for christmas (you see how I’m doing Christmas-related things all year), and by the time we get everything put away, it’s February. Then the summer comes and the grass grows, the pool need attending. I know you can have someone cut the grass. But Vince also has this “thing” about doing things himself. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it just prolongs the inevitable.

I rode my stationary tryke for half an hour in the garage this morning. I set the resistance high enough to get a good workout. It got me moving and I burned a good number of calories. It was satisfying and improved my mood. I’ve been doing this sporadically and I want to be more consistent. 🌹

I am so looking forward to get togethers with family and even friends. Officially we are still only allowed to meet up with one other person, outdoors, for exercise only. (Apart from our own household) Around here a lot of people have been stopping on the seafront to talk to neighbours and friends, while keeping at a distance, and we have accidentally bumped into the kids now and then. I would not go indoors at all yet, but, by now, well over 30% of adults have had their first vaccinations and numbers are well down. Round here the numbers in hospital are tiny now compared to previously.
On March 29th we will be able to meet up in two households outdoors, in gardens etc. I'm looking forward to that as it's just after DDIL's birthday. Pub and café gardens open middle of April. My son can't wait as he will be able to get his stock moving again. (He promotes AF drinks to retail and leisure)
My favourite thing is eating with the family at Fatto a Mano, which will be allowed indoors sometime in May. Plus taking fish and chips round to their house to sit round the kitchen table. I'm looking forward to all the squabbles and noise and feeling like a family again. <3
All this depends on the opening of schools not sending numbers back up again. Here's hoping!

Tasmania Covid Stats ... one not mentioned there is that it has been about 3 months since we've had an overseas case (there was a family of 4 who were quarantined immediately) and it has been 10 months since our most recently locally acquired case. Last May.

Vaccinations have started and 2,327 people have been vaccinated.

    Mindful March:
9: Take a full breath in and out before you reply to others:

What the heck did I do all Monday? Not blinkin’ much, at least not that I can remember.

Welcome @cfeege Christina NY. Have you taken your measurements or noticed your clothes fitting better? There’s more to health than the number on the scale imho… ;)
Rita you’ve got this. Any class would be lucky to have you for a substitute teacher. Your kindness and wit shine through.
Sue in WA amen to mud season. No mares here but our long haired sky ecstatically rolls in mud, sand and anything stinky. Ugh.
Rebecca that throw sounds like the love was knit into every loop.
    KJ safe travels, joyful time.
Allie good for you. Sleep is what heals.
Lisa 3 plumbing septic lectures? Admire your grace.
SuebDew and Flea “breathe the fat back into our body” Oh nooooh!!!
Beth I really wish there was a way you could appeal the FB server’s decision to pull the livestream of your son’s service. Would love to watch it.
Flea would you post a pic or link of the “how are you, please. Open the door” bell? Have almost taught Shadow to press the doorbell instead of “digging” on the slider when she wants in, but its just a little too high for her to reach.
Tracey, Okie, Rebecca and Debbie, I’m a little envious of your “spitting image” comments. When I found my bio-mom and half sisters, was a little disappointed to find no physical resemblance. They are tall, slender, softspoken, gentle and my half sisters are 6 ft redheads with china blue eyes. At 4’10-1/2”, 145 lbs, loud, snappish with brown hair and hazel eyes, I must take after whoever the bio-sire was. I’ve considered Ancestry.com to confirm my guess, but hesitate as I doubt his legitimate daughters would take kindly to learning of my existence. :disappointed:
Barbie why is haggis illegal in the US? Not that I have any interest in eating a sheep’s stomach stuffed with oatmeal and spiced offal…
Michele “looking forward to Sunday when we turn the clocks ahead” not me. It always takes me weeks to adjust to the change, even now that I don’t have to be anywhere at a specific time since retirement and pandemic staying at home.
Heather, I admire your longing to feel like a family again, but "all the squabbles and noise" would make me twitch.
Machka you almost look scared of that birthday cake

Whoo eee BIG flashes of lighting and MONSTER rumbles of thunder brought pounding hail, refreshing the air.

    Lighter, lovelies!

Barbara - one of my best friends found out last year that she had a half sister.
My friends parents had separated and he had gone to another province and started seeing someone else, it wasn’t serious and after a few months he moved back, not to his family, to the province.
Anyway the woman never once contacted him to let him know she was pregnant. Last summer his sister entered her DNA on ancestry and found a new niece. It didn’t take long to figure it all out. The two daughters have met and become friends now at ages 54 and 51.

I bet there is a lot of that that happens through ancestry.

Why are Haggis illegal in the US?

In 1971 it became illegal to import haggis into the US from the UK due to a ban on food containing sheep lung, which constitutes 10 – 15 percent of the traditional recipe. The ban encompasses all lungs, as fluids such as stomach acid and phlegm may enter the lung during slaughter.

Maybe you could make your own haggis if you butchered your own sheep and made it yourself.

We have had our first vaccinations and the headaches that came with them are easing away. Our second vaccinations will be on March 30. I am looking forward to yoga classes and seeing my equestrian friends. I look forward to group meetings and work parties with them.

Did any of you US folks ever see the Joan Hickson version of Miss Marple? They started in 1984 and finished in 1992. My elder son absolutely loved her. He was born in 1976. This is what he posted on Facebook today. I still, think she was the best one.

Just been out for my 5k run. Gorgeous sunny weather. One person swimming. DH came with me as the kids are now back at school, so you aren’t dodging scooters and bikes and it was less busy. It was wonderful. Big queue for ice-cream! B)

Cauliflower cheese tonight with bacon. Yum.

    Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx

    hello,
    tired (not original i know!)
It's a good 24h regarding long term goals.
nothing totally achieved but positive signs.
    - for the worker's rights thing = one guy in our collective got an online appointment with a member of parliment for yesterday late afternoon. This elected official was middle of the road, not left-leaning (and thus theoretically supportive of worker's rights), but he totally understood the situation, found it astonishing, fount our request legitimate, and committed to taking action (writing, meeting with his colleagues on this subject, meeting the minister on this subject). It's only talk, but it was surprisingly positive, both in his reaction and his commitment, that came from him.
    - for writing thing, i got positive feedback on my plan, from the director. i had to leave the zoom session for a moment and apparently she also said to others in my absence that it the plan was very clear. lots of tips and suggestions, so i'm not all there, but it was first very positive feedback on that level in ages. I recorded the video session online (secretly, disturbingly easy to do). it made my computer tired but i got it off to external hard disk.
good vibes on those two levels.

    tired.
tech stuff to deal with : computer check, done
scooter: i MISPLACED the keys! yikes! i was going to take the scooter to train to forest on sunday but had to take the subway. no big deal, but i need to find the keys. they could have slipped somewhere. (like under sofa, bed, etc). i checked shops around scooter in case someone found keys (if i had left them or dropped them near there when locking bike). no luck.

washing machine : very tired. i bought it second hand rather new (maybe a year old) from downstairs neighbor who was moving out, a good 10 years ago. It's been struggling for a while. a repairguy is supposed to cost 40 euros for checking up and 59-79 for repair according to dispatching service, but according to him it's 69 for check up, and more for repair presumably (or no repair).
A new machine is a few hundred euros and i question the value of such a repair of an (by washing machine standards) old machine.
no big deal, but a thing to take care of. it i don't get it replaced soon, I'll be visiting the laundromat very soon, which I'm not a fan of.
basically water in water out, but no turning of turny part; (bottom stuff is very wet and top stuff rather dry after a cycle! :D )

i have an appointment out at 7pm. i'll find out if going by foot or by scooter; not really keen on coming back by foot since it's curfew and so few people are out; the area is SUPER safe normally, but when all are supposed to be inside it's not quite the same. i guess i'm gonna spend the next hours tidying and looking for keys.

Thank you ladies for the good thoughts and prayers sent my way on the loss of my son, Ian. Ian was 34 years old, physically disabled, had a brilliant mind, and was light-years ahead of all us in his faith.
NY's rules have changed in regards to church services/funerals/etc. We had a vitiation on Friday for 3 hours where masks were required. Due to my hearing loss, those who came to see us were given an index card to write down what they had hoped to say to me. They could drop it in a basket or hand it to me directly. I used a phone app that tried to transcribe what people said through their masks. It worked so-so. You don't really need an app, or words even, to see the grief in another's eyes. Their tears and hugs spoke volumes. And yes, every single person hugged me! If I don't contract Covid it will be a miracle. Not that I even care much about that now ...

Yesterday we had a Celebration of Life service at our church. Our pastor/church has been criticized for being too cautious, but as you may recall I shared with him the words from one state governor who said that "the healthy and optimistic among us will doom the vulnerable." He took that to heart months ago. We require masks, hand sanitizing before entering, pews are physically taped off to encourage social distancing. No plates passed or anything like that. We were prepared to move people to other rooms than the sanctuary if necessary We also live-streamed the service and many people took advantage of that. Anyways. the church was well filled yesterday for my son. I gave the eulogy. A young man whom I didn't know prior to Ian's death, spoke formally as well and several people shared. The pastor preached. It was a powerful day. The outpouring of love has been overwhelming. My son was an inspiration to hundreds and impacted lives that we are only now beginning to hear about.

Staff from the group home came to both the visitation and the funeral. The man who overcooked the piece of food (he was not the one to feed it to Ian ... someone else made that mistake by not grinding it according to specifications) that set off the catastrophic series of events came to the funeral home. He was heartbroken. And I forgave him, just as Ian would have. Ian's willingness to forgive was unfathomable.

We had hoped that the service would still be available after the livestream, but I guess we made a mistake with a piece of music that was played during a video tribute and we've had the server (it goes through FaceBook?) pull it down for copyright infringement. If it was still available you could have seen me speak and seen photos of how my Ian defied all odds!

Many, many things went wrong leading up to my son's death. We will be taking the weeks and months ahead to process all of that. To decide how me move forward. For now we are focusing on the details of emptying his room at the group home. We have 30 days. Taking care of the last details ... bank accounts, things like that. It's complicated. Ian was his own guardian/rep payee, but considered our permanently disabled dependent for insurance purposes ... and he didn't have a will.

We have been flooded with food and so, as you can imagine, my eating has been off the rails. So many wonderful salads and fruit bowls ... all of which are still in the refrigerator... since we chose to eat the cookies and sweets instead. Lol. If I don't stop they'll need a double-wide casket when I die.

My heart has a physical ache that will not ever go away on this side of the cross ... but I will be ok. I believe in the gospel. And I will be reunited with my son someday.

hello beth, i'm sorry i had missed your post somehow. i'm so sorry. it's heartbreaking. so glad to hear the service was uplifting; if you have the video, you can have someone remove the song and repost. it's a bit of work but many young people can easily do that, or some computer place with young people...or a tech-y person friend. if the song was playing itself you can cut that part or remove the sound from it, and if it was in the background it's more complexe but doable: like pixelating faces, it has to be not recognizable. not first in your list of things to do, but if you have many people offering to help you it's very likely that one can do that or find someone who can and would be very happy to help you with that. <3<3<3
