Everybody was asleep when I left, and when I returned! I even got to shower before any kids were up!
It's a really crazy day in our house with activities. We try not to run errands on Sundays if we can help it, so we were racking our brains trying to figure out when we would go grocery shopping. But since I was already showered and dressed, I was able to get to the store and back before the kids' soccer practice this morning.9 -

Morning all!
It's race day! I had the best sleep last night. Am up, about to get breakfast and head down to the starting line. Super pumped. The weather appears to have eased, can't hear any wind or rain.
Thank you for all your support over the last while. Here's the link if you want to follow along

Had to go to the Post Office this morning to pick up a registered letter. It was yet another one from the IRS, if you recall that whole story I told earlier, saying that I didn't pay my taxes last year. Will try once again to take care of that on Monday. Anyway, that sort of threw my whole day off and I haven't been motivated to do much. I decided to just do the minimum required to keep my streak going. Hoping for a "long" run tomorrow.7 -
Congrats @Avidkeo on crushing that PR! So cool to see that @ContraryMaryMary and you were able to meet up!4
-
Great job @Avidkeo! Congratulations! Awesome picture if you and @ContraryMaryMary. And the pre race pictures are great too. Looks like a beautiful place to run.4

Oh yeah. Totally post run....um Hm. Absolutely.4 -
Ok long post ahead.
So I had an amazing sleep. Was put by 9pm, woke briefly at 4am, went back to sleep and woke again about 5:45. Got up, had breakfast, got dressed and headed out. It was only a 10 minute walk down to the start line and it was a lovely way to warm up. It was warm and very humid. Unsure what the humidity level is, but it's high. I took a couple of pre run snaps, then met up with @ContraryMaryMary for a quick pre run snap and chat.
Lines up and started. And started too fast. I'd been aiming for negative splits and with the vague plan of doing around 2:02:00 or better if it went well. The first km I was kinda being pulled along with the crowd. The first 3k was really easy. Started feeling cocky I think and started to dream of a sub 2hr....ya nah.
At 7k I started getting a bit of a pain in my left leg, outside of my hip and knee. It was a weird pain, felt like a bit of weakness, hitching in my step. Hard to describe. It didn't get any worse as I went on but was annoying.
At 10k I realised I screwed up. I was going too fast. And was starting to feel tired. I admit a small part of me was tempted to quit. I was a bit sore. But I remembered my reasons for running, and what I was aiming for. I also just focused on my podcast.
I then started just focusing on the km markers. At around 11k I realised the reason. I was getting pain was the camber of the road! I usually run on footpaths so don't deal with camber. And because we were staying on the right side of the road, it was causing issues. So I started running as much as I could in the middle of the road. I noticed how much better if felt. I couldn't do it the whole time due to aid stations etc (I had my hydration pack so didn't need the water).
At 17k we actually run past the finish line for a 4k out and back. That was mentally incredibly hard. That 2k between 17 and 19k was a real mental challenge. I was really struggling at that point. After the turn around though at 19k I caught a second wind. i knew at that point it was only 2k left. Or around 12 minutes. So I started counting down the minutes mentally. 10 minutes, 8, etc. At 20k I stepped it up and started really going hard. I'd pretty much managed 5:45ish for most of the way, now I was flying, doing that km in 5:35.
I admit entering the final chute for the finish line was such a good feeling. I absolutely sprinted those last couple of hundred metres aiming to do as well as I could. I saw the time on the clock was 2:02:40 and was so elated.
It was hard. I just felt so energy sapped. Saw @ContraryMaryMary again, wandered around to find a banana and some electrolyte drink. Then stretched. The hip and knee immediately felt better. Though I know I didn't stretch enough. I'll do some more later.
Stopped and had a iced coffee and chatted a bit, then walked back to our accommodation where I had a shower and spa. Amazing.
Now just ordered Thai delivery for lunch, and watching the Snyder cut of Justice league.
A pretty awesome day really!
Oh and a real post run pic, with a wonderful photo bomb by my Mum!10 -
So question...
Strava put my HM distance at 2:00:59
And Garmin put it at 2:02:31 - I'm guessing because GPS vs course.
What would you count as your record? It's a big difference!1 -

Weird that Strava has adjusted it like that - usually only happens if you stop on course, and you'd remember if you stopped for a minute and a half. My Strava is the same as Garmin. As an officially measured course, with a timing chip, I'd go with what that says. Soz.4 -
So @Avidkeo had a great day at the office. Mine, not so much. A very disappointing end to my season.
I had an awful run and it wasn’t just the humidity (and believe me, it was humid - up over 90% I'd guess). I was feeling good at the start line and headed off with a hiss and a roar. Not sure what happened next.
From about 4km things started to get tough. At 7km, my left ear blocked up, and I started to get cold shivers, and felt dreadful. Strongly considered DNF and had to take a couple of walk breaks (which I have never done on a flat course).
Time-wise, my first 7k were fine and close enough to target to not panic about - they weren't PR pace, but good enough for a fast result. But after 7k I simply got slower and slower, clocking up a few 6 minute kilometres in the final third (I run faster than that in training). At the finish line, I was really light headed - like when your blood pressure drops dramatically.
Compare this to my event in March, which was an undulating course with a gigantic hill in the middle, where I had an amazing day, didn't push myself at all, and came in four minutes faster than today.
No idea why today was such a disaster. Perhaps I'm coming down with something (I feel fine).
Oh well. There will be many more events, and it was great to finally meet @Avidkeo.10 -
@Avidkeo Great race report and you did so well! Love the post race picture with your mom! I would go with the official race time.
@ContraryMaryMary Sorry you had a hard day. It does almost sound like you are coming down with something. I hope not! You did great to finish and so glad that you two were able to meet up and spend some time getting to know each other in real life.4 -
April Goal: 100 Miles
4/1: 5.51 miles
4/2: 1.41 miles
4/4: 9.02 miles
4/5: 2.02 miles
4/6: 5.53 miles
4/10: 3.14 miles
26.63/100 miles completed for April
My hip was much better yesterday but I decided one more rest day wouldn't hurt so I walked 2 miles yesterday morning instead of running. Then today I ran 3.1 miles. It was a really good run. The weather was perfect and the hip was great. I think resting it was a good idea. I also ordered some new shoes which should help as well. So far the hip feels fine. I usually run about 10 miles on Sundays, but I may just do 6 or 7 tomorrow. I'm scheduled to get my second covid vaccine so I want to get my run in first. I am hoping that I won't have any issues with it.
Great race report @Avidkeo Love the photo bomb!
@ContraryMaryMary I'm sorry your race wasn't good. Way to hang in there though.

Duh, I’ve worked it out. The course was 300m long so yes, your half was 2:00:59. Take it. This means I can take about the same off my time. Unfortunately, even with this, it still doesn’t make it into my top 10 results.4 -

Wow 300m!
Yeah strava shows the full time, and that my HM time was 2:00:59. And yeah garmin shows I ran a distance of 21.37k.
Makes that sub 2hr more likely haha5
