April 2021 Monthly Running Challenge

Back after my absence.
The short story of it is that the family doctor was alarmed by a heart murmur that I have had all my life. He said it was getting worse. He told me no running, nothing strenuous, no lifting over 20 lbs. He made an appointment with the cardiologist for me for the following week. I worried the entire time.
Went to the cardiologist he examined me and said I was fine. No restrictions, go running, see him in a year.
Interestingly, the cardiologist is also a runner. He finished the doctoring part and then we had a nice running chat. Nice guy.
The loss of the running days is going to mess up this month's goal. But we shall persevere.
April to date: 20.01 miles.17 -
@kgirlhart agreed that you will be fine for your 10k with your training. Giving your feet a little rest to recover will do you more good than a couple more days of running. You're ready.

Another short run this morning, but this time I dragged along my reluctant running buddy Stella to do the combined dog walk/run. As always it's a mixed bag. I can't post it but I took a short video where she was running behind me and stopped and refused to move because she wanted to go a different way than I was heading. She just sat down, the little drama queen. I can't complain about the gorgeous morning to be out there though.

@emptydog That is scary. Glad the cardiologist said it is nothing to be concerned about. Do you have echocardiograms yearly? I have a slight heart murmur that was found on my exit physical from the AF. Obviously had it all of my life, but no one had heard it until then. Anyway, I get echocardiograms every year. That is how they found the aortic root aneurysm that I had to have repaired in January. They said that the heart murmur, caused by having a bicuspid aortic valve, is probably what caused the aneurysm. Not saying that you have one, but, in my non-doctor opinion and from experience, they should really keep a yearly check on it.
Hahaha about Stella @katharmonic! Tippy did that to me once. She was done with driveway laps and just laid down. It's hard to get a 60 pound dog up and going again when they don't want to. Glad you had nice weather for the run!
2 -
@quilteryoyoNot saying that you have one, but, in my non-doctor opinion and from experience, they should really keep a yearly check on it.
I appreciate that and thank you for your input. I imagine now I will be having an annual echocardiogram.
The family doctor was the one that originally ordered it and I never gave it a second thought. Just went and had it done. I have been very lucky with my health in that I have never really made a conscious effort to take care of myself.

I want tattle on my class mates. Do or don’t?
(College nursing program.)0 -
@emptydog I try to take care of myself, somewhat. More so now than earlier in life. My open heart surgery is the first surgery I have had - actually the first time I spent the night in the hospital as a patient. So, it was pretty scary, but went well - because I was in such good shape going in.
@swenson19d Depends on what they did? If it could potentially have devastating consequences for someone, I would say yes. If not, think about your reasons for wanting to tattle first, and what you want to happen about the situation if you do.

@quilteryoyo ya I’m being petty. Someone was watching tv in class instead of listening... just rude4
-
@skippygirlsmom Hahaha That's what I would probably do too!
@swenson19d The professor probably knows. People think they are hiding that sort of thing, but they really aren't. It is rude though.1 -

35.95/80 miles
My leg, back, and hip muscle are a little niggly from the treadmill incident yesterday. I decided to do the minimum walk again to give my body a bit of a break. Then, mom and I decided today would be the best day to mow her lawn this week as the weather is going to get rainy and cold. We were able to use her riding mower today, so didn't have to push mow very much of it. I did have to do the weed eating/trimming though. Rest would have been better, but, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Good news is, so far the second CoVID shot just caused a sore arm, which is almost gone today. Whew! You never know.7 -

I have managed to get in short workouts before work four days in a row. I have hoped doing so would help improve my mood and energy during the day. Still waiting on that, haha. I also managed to get 2.5 miles Monday night, 2 miles and Body Pump Tuesday, and a short dog walk and Kickboxing last night. I know next week will probably be a bust with being on call, but I am trying hard this week for exercise and self care.5
-
@marisap2010 You have done well with your workouts this week. Hang in there. I hope things get better for you!0

Cloudy and low 40s F today, so instead of digging out warmer running gear, I just ran on the treadmill. Listened to '80s workout music; and I received a deep question to ponder: did Rick James borrow "Superfreak" from MC Hammer, or did MC Hammer borrow "U Can't Touch This" from Rick James?

Asked and answered...thanks for the info.

Coyotes - one good thing is that they live in groups but typically hunt solo or in pairs. I have seen them hunting rabbits and squirrels along the river bed here and they are typically in pairs. One will flush and the other will chase and grab whatever they are hunting. Ours are not really afraid of people but they are definitely cautious. I guess when you consider this area is pretty urban/suburban they have to be tolerant of people always being around and we are regularly warned to keep their pets inside especially at night. Everyone has block walls mostly around their yards but the coyotes can easily jump them.
@swenson19d - I hope the coyote was frightened away and your kitty is ok!
@emptydog - I have a murmur too. Have had it since I was a kid as a result of rheumatic fever. It is also what caused my very low HR and ultimate need for a pacemaker. It is a good thing to have monitored regularly especially by a doctor who is also an athlete. My cardiologist told me that I would eventually need to have the PM or something similar but to keep doing what I was doing, I would know when something needed to be done and he was right.
@tramboman - I confess I had to look up the songs to see who sang/wrote what. It is interesting that they were both involved in 'You Can't Touch This'. So @WhatMeRunning is somewhat correct.
I got a run in early yesterday and it was awesome - cool and overcast. I actually got up, got dressed and out the door without sitting down to look at email or to eat anything. I was under time constraint and motivated to get the run in. We had the housekeeper coming and wanted to be out before she came because she is afraid of Hobbes the Vizsla. We took him to a dog park for about an hour and then drove to San Diego to visit his breeder who also has his brother and nephew. I haven't seen him this excited in a long time. We walked their property (vineyard, orange grove and huge field that usually has cows) while the pups just ran and ran. We had lunch and they all played until they were exhausted. Then he slept all the way home 😂Hobbes (in front) with his brother Teak and nephew Tanner in the distance

Very tired Hobbes!9 -

Thanks @emptydog . Its from the last race I ran - in Dec of 2020. I got to meet @Teresa502 there. So fun.
@rb3551 You are doing great.
@Tramboman I hear you with choosing the treadmill. Glad it was an awful experience for you.
@katharmonic Glad the sad songs helped. Did you have a good cry too? That is usually what make me feel better. Great run.

Ooops. Looks like I'm a bit behind on my mileage. Hopefully I can make it up.
My back is feeling better today, but, I can still feel tightness. Because I didn't rest it yesterday, I decided to today and walk rather than my planned run. I was going to walk on the treadmill so I wouldn't have all of the hills from walking on the driveway, but Tippy kept coming to the door and looking in with those sad puppy dog eyes, so I gave in and walked outside. She did two laps, on leash, and was done. LOL Then, after a brief rest, she was off to explore in the neighbor's field while I finished. I did those 2 miles at an average 3.9 mph pace. I plan to try running tomorrow.5 -

Felt really strong on today's run and ran my HR up just a little more during the last couple run portions in the last 1/4 mile, which I think accounted for a lot of the extra distance. Rest day tomorrow for me. Happy Friday everyone!
Very nice 5k time there @sweetdaisy13

Thank you @WhatMeRunning. I wasn't sure I wanted to go, but time was short and I made myself.
I have my first Covid Vaccine tomorrow so know I can't run for a few days if I have any side effects, so did a short run whilst I could.3
