@JustJenn68 WOW that is a really great AF streak. Congrats. Your right, the money savings is mind blowing. Hmmmm so what is your dream vacation? Mine would be an all inclusive vacation MINUS the free alcohol (that is a set up for disaster in my mind)2 -
@Lilylady3k it is nice to get out and be gathering again, I agree. Love the "Sisters who Sip" group name. I suppose you could sip whatever you wanted, not only alcohol.🤣
@globalhiker thanks for the Arizonia weather and air information. We are pretty lucky here in Maine with the air quality. I just can't take the snow and cold any longer. Gotta make a change soon.
Heineken00 yesterday.
AF 5/54 -

@MissMay - So very true! I've done that in the past and will likely in the future. However for this first gathering and the very unusual cocktails they had available ... decided to indulge.
This week lots of challenges but then next week starting Sunday ... I have none but the usual evening wine bottles to dodge. Planning to check off some AF nights toward my 12-16 for the month next week!

I worked from home yesterday since we were having a new TV delivered. Game plan yesterday was to finish work up by 5 and head straight to the gym. Reality was still sending emails at 5:30, then husband walking in the door and asking me to help him get the TV out of the box first. At 6, we were still scratching our heads over the low-quality pictogram assembly instructions. By 6:30, I knew the gym wasn't happening or we'd be eating dinner at 10. I did go for a twilight walk after dinner, at least - tried to "earn" my Cinco de Mayo beer. And the new TV is very nice.
@globalhiker All that cushioning is murder! My foot goes numb walking more that 10 steps in an over-cushioned shoe. My Nikes are super lightweight, 4mm drop, minimal cushion and support. I can't believe they've lasted me this long, honestly. Nike doesn't make anything like them anymore I'm curious about the New Balance Minimus (a *bargain* at only $120 lol), but I haven't found a store near me that stocks them, and reviews say the sizing isn't in line with other New Balance shoes.5 -

Another quick check in from OH. DD and SIL are so nice, they set up this whole 'bedroom' in the basement. Of course the grandkids need to come down and play!
AF 5 out of 5 days this month and a rolling 9 days straight AF. Should not be a problem staying that way as my SIL is doing keto and not drinking (I think?) DD rarely drinks so there is no alcohol in the house. We could go to the local store and buy some wine but I am just too lazy to drive up there to go get it.
@JustJenn68 awesome job on the streak!5 -
Synergy Mystic Mango Kombucha with a fresh mango slice as garnish on the deck.

@globalhiker
Well, you know that you are completely welcome up here! Warning that we are around the 100F area in the summers, but we do have lots of lakes to cool off in. Also, there are many mountain peaks to climb which will be considerably cooler.
Can hardly wait until you can come to visit!3 -
My May Goals:

@MissMay - Love your garden!!! Beautiful weather for sitting outside and enjoying the view.
@dawnbgethealthy - Very glad that you are now able to get the vaccine up there in Canada ... know it has been a challenge.
Virtual Whiskey Experience was fun. I stayed in the background as this was DH's company hosting a customer event ... there were presentations for about 45 minutes product presentations + Q&A and then an expert walked us through the whiskey experience. He was very very knowledgable. 5 glasses each with less than a shot which DH & I shared. I sipped each one for the comparison. We walked through trying to describe what it tastes like, his background info, guessing who makes it, family background of the company, etc. Then he revealed what it was.
1. Glen Morangie - Highland Scotch single malt
2. Tullamore Dew Original - Ireland blended whiskey
3. High Creek - Canada single grain whisky
4. Makers Mark - US Kentucky bourbon
5. Labelled A or B and we had to guess which one of the above it was
After that Italian dinner out with 2 glasses of wine. Ran into friends (her birthday 65 years). It was a nice evening. Kept DH from opening a bottle of wine when we got home. Made decaf coffee + lots of water.4 -
I need to get in on this talk about shoes. Last Summer I began coming home after work and my feet would be killing me. Granted, I am over 60 years old doing heavy work. Should not really be an issue since I have always done either garden/hardscape, construction or excavation.
Anyhow, I began joking to a good friend that gee my toes are killing me today, my feet must have gotten fertilizer on them from gardening and they are growing, LOL. No matter which shoes from my collection I switched to they were still sore. Over active imagination I kept thinking.
Then my same friend went to buy shoes at a shoe store. To her surprise the shoe attendant measured her feet and told her she would need a size 9. IMPOSSIBLE she spurtted out. I wear an 8. The attendant giggled and told her as you age the ligaments in your feet relax, you lose fat in your feet and they....well.......stretch out and the size increases.
GREAT only another thing I can add to my I am getting older list, BIGGER SHOE SIZES. As if a size 9.5 all my life was not embarrassing enough.

@dawnbgethealthy save aside some time after your vaccine in case you need to recoup a bit from it. I know your schedule is full, but it can give you flu like symptoms which you should be aware of. Good luck
Thanks for the thumbs ups on the garden gang. Have not edged or mulched yet this Spring, so don't look to close. I was trying to focus on the glass of kombucha and the garden photo bombed me. Lol.
11 day AF streak

SHOES! Well I started buying Brooks Ghost about 3 years ago and really love them. In fact I just bought 2 more pairs when I found them on sale in my size. When a new model is released the last season always goes on sale!
I also buy Asic ... but do not like anything <$90 because they are not made nearly as well and I can tell the difference. Silly but there is definitely a quality and fit difference in their high end vs low end shoe.
HaPpY RuNnInG & WaLkInG!
Anyone have recommendations on hiking boots? My very old pair finally fell apart and need to shop for a new pair.
@MissMay - I went up a full shoe size in my 30s when having 3 kids. I hope that I don't lose all those shoes I've collected now that I'm retired and starting this next decade (60s).5 -
@Lilylady3k I did not see the part of your post talking about the whiskey tasting. How cute you stayed off to the side. What fun though it sounded like to learn about those diferent whiskey's.
Back in the day, I thoroughly enjoyed Jim Beam's HONEY bourbon. Probably way too much lol😆
Going to have to look up those shoes now from Brooks Ghost.5 -
WOW love the garden photo!
Well I did have a few glasses of wine last night but they just did not taste that good. It could have been it was just the wine or the combination of the wine, and my continued sore throat with a side of medication. Either way I am in no hurry to repeat that for awhile.
This is just a short accountability note for me.
Oh as for shoes...I find if I spend $$ on shoes my feet thank me. I do wear acis for exercise. And yes those observations as you get older on your feet are spot on. I had a great deal of heel pain until I switched up shoe types.5 -
@MissMay - I'm not a straight whiskey/scotch drinker but do like bourbon so it was easy to taste each but resist downing them. The bourbon he said after the first sip to add a drop of water and it changes the experience. That was an interesting experiment and he was right.
Brooks shoes ... my husband has been wearing them for years and I finally decided to try them out. Now I know how he talked my adult children to like the brand & model as well ... I find them very comfortable.
But recently DH had to try something different because of his foot issue where the toe joins the foot ... something a little stiffer. The Running Store recommended Puma. That has definitely helped get him back to taking long walks with me as well as at least a run each week. Gradually getting back into the groove but I think he needs to go back to the specialist since it has been 3-4 months since his injury and it is still bothering him. Old age healing takes much longer!5 -

I actually made it to the gym last night! It felt good. Still trying to iron out a lifting routine I'm happy with, especially for legs, but I think I'm getting closer.
Wine planned with dinner tonight, and I'm going out to dinner with friends tomorrow so there will probably be a drink or few. Going to avoid Party Mode this time... Two of the women in my friend group tend to drink slowly and in smaller quantities, so I'm going to try to keep pace with them and only order another drink if they do.
@MissMay Ah, the trials of aging feet. My mom and I used to be able to share shoes, then she hit her mid-50s and went up a size. My dad has been working at Home Depot since the pandemic started (he was bored, I guess) and it's taken a toll on his feet. His toes were bruising, and he was recently diagnosed with predislocated toe syndrome, so now he has to buy one specific brand of shoe with an ultra-wide toe box. This is probably my fate in 30 years
@Lilylady3k Since my last brand of hiking boots were the Ahnu Montaras from REI and are discontinued now, I can't be much help, but REI is 100% the place to go for that sort of thing. I really wanted the ankle support or I would have gone with a pair of Merrells. And wow, Brooks. We're all super different and there's a shoe out there for everyone! Brooks and I do not get along. Back when all my back problems were just starting up, Run On fitted me and insisted that a pair of Brooks were the shoes for me. I, being a clueless 20-something, assumed they had to be experts and the pain I was experiencing on my runs was just getting acclimated to the shoe. After suffering through about 5 runs/15 miles, they went into retirement. I've tried on other Brooks since then, and generally I find them too heavy and too cushy, no matter the style. But they're an immensely popular brand for a reason - they work well for a lot of people.
I tried on a pair of Pumas (Liberate, I think?) which were insanely lightweight, and I think I would have loved them if I wasn't worried about the super-thin material giving me blisters. I'll probably look over the Pumas more at a store with a larger selection of them. I think I'm gonna spend a loooong time shopping this weekend!4 -

GOOD Saturday morning LESS ALCOHOL gang.
Today we take off for an over night out of state. First stop will be to shop for new shoes. Thanks to all of you for adding to the feet/shoe conversation. I appreciate all the helpful information. Now I know why the thrift stores have all those beautiful shoes folks have donated. I always wondered WHY would they get rid of shoes that are not worn out?
Went out last evening to listen to a live band playing on an open deck. The weather was very nice, only a little nip in the air. Lots of people stopping in for food and drink and social connection.
Being a Friday, my husband would have in the not to distant past told me to let my hair down, have some drinks(number one rule for me - absolutely no drinks out when I am the driver of the car).
Even though I had not clued him in to my DRY May plans, I was shocked when he took it upon himself to go order drinks for us and him automatically came back to the table with a non alcoholic drink for me. 🤤 <- this is my shocked and joy look.
12 day AF streak
If your a Mom enjoy this special weekend especially for you!!

@Lilylady3k Your brunch looks fantastic to say the least!
Was AF last night, this is our last day in OH as we fly out in a few hours. It has been a whirlwind week but only 1 alcohol evening and I actually wish I had done without. It did not even taste good.
May 6 out of 7 AF days so far this month
back tomorrow after a good nights sleep

Dizzy and insanely buried with work and just catching up....Love all the pictures!!
AF for 1st week of May.....same plan for this 2nd week .
Zero chocolate and zero sugar yesterday. First time since February without my daily treats. I didn't die ...but I suffered a bit
Footwear: found youtube reviews helpful. And www.runrepeat.com. @Lilylady3k that site has a section for hiking shoes too.
I use an old pair of New Balance trail running shoes instead of hiking boots and just wear midcalf height socks. The trail running shoes give my feet better flexibility and they are more breathable in general. I also like ones that are knobby and durable underfoot so I don't feel every pebble and rock I step on. Every now and I then I luck out at a Big 5 store and get a discontinued model and those seem to be the ones made from materials of prior years that last longer!
Good luck shopping this weekend folks!!
