Sunny and mid 40s F today. Supposed to be a golf day, but because of the frost, the golf course itself wasn't even open this morning. So I came home and ran instead.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

Congrats on getting to enjoy such great weather for a run this late in the Spring in TX @SummerSkier
Excellent intervals @RunsOnEspresso and @pfeiferlindsey
Glad to hear your Running Club is back together @sweetdaisy13
Wow! Is that THE @garygse ??? We have a sighting! Great to see you post again.
Nice 5k sleep-running @katharmonic!
@kgirlhart I have to wonder what that possum was up to, I've never seen one that was anything but terrified to be around people. Skunks are the only critter on the trails that actually worry me. I'll take coyotes over skunks any day. Although I also dislike running through spider webs. I think it's skunk, spider web, coyote in that order for me peronally. Notice I didn't say spiders. They typically don't want anything to do with me even after running right through some humongous web. But those damn webs!!!
@shanaber I hope that hamstring was not reinjured too badly and you make a full, permanent recovery soon! Sounds encouraging from the nice hike you were able to take on that horse trail.
Way to keep yourself going and get that run in @Scott6255
@martaindale your copperhead story reminds me that I actually fear copperheads and tree rattlesnakes on our trails more than skunks, spider webs and coyotes. I very rarely see them here though, despite them being prevalent.

I'm still really sore. Better than yesterday, but still hobbling around... rode my bike to pick up packages and it was pretty uncomfortable - definitely not a day for any further workouts, other than my PT stretches. I'm seeing improvements with the stretches. But not this one:
Can anyone do this?
It's one of the "extra" stretches the physio sent, rather than the main targeted stuff I need to do. So probably not a huge deal.1 -

I think I could do that one if I cut my legs off at the knees.
I do that stretch with legs extended to loosen my lower back.2 -

I actually really like that stretch, but you have to ease into it very carefully and gradually. I started out by sticking a yoga block under my backside to make it less intense until my knees learned to like it.2 -
Another female problem today... coach filmed us coming down a hill and omg it looks like I'm about to give myself two black eyes. I didn't realise I bounce that much! My bra is clearly not doing its job 🤬10

That's my party trick. For some reason I've always been able to do this stretch and was amazed when my yoga teacher couldn't but could do all sorts of other amazing bendy stuff. You can always do it one leg at a time, also, going flat on your back like that is the advanced version, nothing wrong with propping yourself up on your hands or forearms. Apparently, hyper stretching your knees like that is really good for them - kinda counter intuitive as it's a pretty extreme bend.3 -
Rest day for me today. Thank goodness.
I have had a bit of ankle pain in the last few weeks which I attributed to all my shoes being worn out (Strava tells me one pair was at 700km and the second at over 500km). So I went and bought a new pair, however, my ankle was sore - not when running, but I was hobbling whenever I started moving after sitting. Figured my foot was tight, so attacked it with a hard rubber ball. Got an almighty click from the top of my foot and my ankle was immediately better, consequently, yesterday's run was much bouncier.
Also, went to the osteo yesterday and he manipulated my foot further (more clicks and clunks), along with sorting my hip and lower back which were also tight. Moral of the story - keep buying new running shoes!
On that point, I've just noticed my third pair of trainers, which I have been thinking of as my 'new shoes' for a while now, are at 450km so they need replacing. That being said, my spanking new pair are already at 90km - the life of a runner huh?10 -
@martaindale - copperheads, scary! I was under the impression we don't have any venomous snakes here and was shocked when hiking last weekend and someone said there could be rattlesnakes. Apparently there are 3 species of venomous snakes in NY state (timber rattlesnake, eastern massasauga rattlesnake, and copperhead) but they are rare. There's a swamp near here that is apparently home to an isolated colony of the massasauga rattlesnakes, a fact I just learned. I will not be running near that swamp.
@polskagirl01 oh no, I cannot do that stretch OUCH! The knee pain with that and hero pose is intense for me - the tendon or muscle attachment right above the knee.

The sun was out today but still cool. Really pretty nice running weather but I'm so ready to be warm. I had strength training this morning and we hit the legs hard today. I told my trainer the PT said to work on glute strength and I think he took that as a challenge to work the glutes harder than they've ever worked. And the quads and the calves. I didn't get up early enough to get a run in before that and I really should have. The after-work run was a tough one. My legs were complaining that they'd done enough today. Tomorrow I'm sure they will be much more vocal about that.
Did I tell you I got a new bench press PR earlier this week? Well i did It was an after the fact realization that it was my highest weight - sometimes good not to know until you're already done! But that means my pecs and arms were also super sore this week so now it's all body parts at different stages of "ouch". It's a good hurt I guess, certainly happy to back to this rather than the limited things I could do because of back pain.

Staying steady.. doing a little everyday. What's awesome is I have managed to convince my 60+ mother, brother and my hubby to join with me. So I always have a buddy not matter when I go. 😁12 -

Don't have much time tonight. I've read through the posts and liked and hugged where appropriate. I did get in a 6 mile run today. First I did a virtual race I had signed up for - the Hope 4 - to support the American Cancer Society. Then I added 2 easy miles at the end so I would have my long run for the week done already. I did run the race a little faster than my easy pace, but didn't push it too much. I walked when I needed to and ran when I could. Finish time was 47:40 minutes for an 11:55 min/mile pace. Anything around 12:00 min/mile is good for me right now. So, I was pleased. The two extra miles were at a 13:00 min/mile pace. Glad I got it done when the weather was so nice - 54°F, sunny to partly cloudy and only a slight breeze. Running in those temps was great. The sweaty cool down walk was a little chilly.

@quilteryoyo well done! It's such an inspiration to see how you've bounced back from your op.

yesterday was a rest day for me as well as my hip was giving me some "lip" on Wed night. I am learning. lol. My issue is that to relieve my hip a little I need to use more heels (think 1 in vs flat) but to keep my shins happy I really have to use flats. So whichever is screaming at me loudest dictates what I wear. I hear you on the shoes. I think I have not bought any new clothes for years but the shoes. oh my. the shoes. I tried a new style out Wed and was totally disappointed that they were WAY too small in my size. I could run in them but I could tell my toes and feet would suffer so I have sent them back for a half size larger. So unusual as I always wear the same size. What really upsets me is how the miles put the wear on the shoes and they look completely presentable but they no longer have the padding required. My left shin is my parakeet in the mine so to speak and when it starts talking regardless of how new the shoes look I know they need to be re purposed at goodwill.

Rainy and low 40s F this morning, so it was treadmill time. When I went outside, I saw a lot of worms crawling around on the (relatively) warm asphalt: had I run outside, I could have held this year's Earthworm 5k and probably beaten most of them.

Woke up thinking maybe I could run, but then got out of bed and nope. So basically a little 16.5k mountain run on Monday gave me marathon-level DOMS. I feel really out of shape, but realize I'm probably actually just fine.
Also the restrictions that were supposed to be lifted got pushed back and the road HM that was "definitely happening on the 22nd" got postponed to who-knows-when. I'm not sure anyone was really expecting that race to happen anyway.9 -

Look on the bright side. At least you were able to get out of bed.5 -
@WhatMeRunning I feel you on the spiderwebs! I hate them too.
@polskagirl01 I can do that stretch but my problem right knee doesn't like it so I don't do it anymore. I have always been pretty flexible though.
@quilteryoyo I second the amazement at how well your recovery is going. Good job!2 -

Absolutely! And a few minutes ago I went up and down the stairs without taking one step at a time 🙂4 -
Hey all.
Was Mia the last couple of days as I enjoyed the last few days of my holiday. Yesterday I finished the pallet playhouse I was making for the kids. It's made entirely of wooden pallets and a tarpaulin roof. Cost less than $20usd to put together and a few hours. The kids love it!
Today is Saturday, so long run day then I'm out of town for work. Fun.11 -
WOW! Had to go back to page 5 to find my last posting. We are MOVING IT this month!
May 1 8.1 miles/8.1 cum goal 200
May 2 9.12 miles/ 17.22 cum
May 3 3.1 miles/ 20.32 cum
May 4 9.06 mils/29.38 cum of 200 goal
May 5 5.01 miles
May 6 rest day
May 7 8.09 miles 42.48 cum of 200 goal (first week done)
The weather really has been fab lately but now the days are starting to warm up so my 2 per and sprints at lunch will soon be a thing of the past. It was already 80 today. Happy to see so much activity and read all the updates.
Does anyone else get performance anxiety? Like always wanting the day's run to be at least as good or better than the day before? Sometimes I get stuck there which is why I set HR goals to make sure I don't overtrain.6 -
@SummerSkier - I am notorious for constantly "revising" things to improve and sometimes overdoing it by mistake when I assume I can take on that extra "little" load or put more effort somewhere and don't realize it is too much in addition to other stuff. That's why this time around the main driver in my training plan is forcing myself to calculate my training load on "time at effort (based on HR)", and that's it. Mileage and everything else I am just pretending that I don't care. Truth is, I care a lot. But I am not allowing myself to tweak anything and to trust that I will see the gains if I do the proper efforts as planned over the proper duration. So far, so good. I am trying to remember all the times I regretted changing from my initial plan to keep me from tweaking my plans this time around. I truly consider not gunning to join the 100 mile club this month and stick with the fair estimate of 95 miles this month as a big win in this approach. In the past I would have added those extra miles and would have made every effort to just suck it up. That's fine until the one time it bites you and you have to take a bunch of down time. I would rather slowly improve now than achieve arbitrary numbers quickly at the expense of being able to continue.10
-
@SummerSkier yes, me too. After 9 years of running, I still have to fight that mental dragon. But I just started REALLY trying to make myself go slow on easy days and remember that doing so will allow me to continue running (as opposed to sitting on the couch for months with an injury). Good for you for recognizing it!7

Working towards my 1st 100 miles in May challenge. I'm not to where I can run very far at once yet, but I'm excited!
May total: 18.81 miles
Today: 2.37 (longest continuous) 🥳10
