@Teresa502 I hate it when that happens. Glad you were able to find a place for the pit stop.
I forgot. I did get to see the puppies again yesterday. These are the last pictures, as all but one went to their new homes today.
Tug of war with mom. They were so cute playing together!
The boys were tuckered out way before the girls were.5 -
I caught up but I'm going to forget everything to comment on - liked and hugged all over the place though.
@skippygirlsmom that's FABULOUS news that you can run again! Wow. So strong to recover that well.
@quilteryoyo awesome that you signed up for the AF HM. Good luck with your training - I know you'll do so well with it and it will be excellent motivation. Maybe you'll find some of the fun in the run you mentioned. I don't find running itself all that fun but I do have fun with meeting up with people, going to new places to run, and being done with running and going out to coffee I think I'm going to concentrate on mixing it up a bit more so I don't get too bored. New place and maybe more trail running emphasis. Right now I'm not feeling it with setting a race goal but I'm hoping I'll get back to speedwork and feel more confident with that.
@ContraryMaryMary good luck with training for your trail race! Your training sounds like it will definitely have you ready.
I know I've missed so much. Good job everyone5 -

Yesterday - no run, 5 hours of hiking. Report on that below.
Today - 1.75 miles with Stella after work and then the rest was a warm-up before strength class. Outside warm-up this time, not the treadmill, as it was 70 degrees and not raining yet. Strength training was good tonight - got a new bench press PR without realizing it until after. Very excited about this because I've felt like I had really lost a lot of progress while I was recovering from my back injury.
Sunday's hike was two smaller mountains, Cat and Thomas, near Lake George NY, which is about a 3-hour drive from me. This is still in the Adirondack Park, but a different area than the high peaks. The high peaks are currently not recommended because it is mud season from all the melting snow and to save the trails they don't want you to hike above 2500' elevation until it's dried up. So we went to these smaller peaks to get some hiking in and enjoyed a really nice day. It was raining at home but a lovely mid 60s in Lake George, although mostly cloudy and a few sprinkles. The sun did peek out as we were on the summit of Cat Mountain and for the way back down and out. The whole hike was a loop of about 8.3 miles and took us about 5 hours, which included a long time relaxing on the summit. The elevation gain was about 2000 feet total according to Garmin. I really enjoyed this hike as a little easier and shorter version of the high peaks hikes, and the temps were pretty ideal for hiking. Oh, and for those of you who recall the group drama of my last hike, this one went smoothly with no yelling and very little disagreement at all

Nice job on the runs and hikes @katharmonic ! Beautiful pictures.0

Had to stretch my back this morning - it was tight yesterday and tight again this morning. It normally loosens up after a couple of kilometers, but if I'm planning on racing a 5k, I don't have a couple of kilometers to loosen up. I usually do a slow kilometer or so before the race, but I really need to work on my back (again).
Is your back pain a specific injury or running related tightness? I ask as I had a massive breakthrough with my tight back the day my osteo pointed out that my sore back was caused by tight quads. I simply attacked my quads with a foam roller and my back pain vanished instantly. Perhaps worth a try.

Hi yall, long time no see. Welcome and welcome back to everyone!
Goal for May is to get back to running. Stretch goal is working back up to something akin to distance by the end of the month - say 12km?
@Avidkeo Memorial run sounds good. Bingo run sounds even better (but I don't have a tutu to run in and I'm not getting one thank you very much). Anyway count me in.
@skippygirlsmom Giant congrats on being cleared to run again! Looks like you're doing well and so quickly too.
@ContraryMaryMary If speedwork is giving you sore abs and bum, then you're probably doing something very right. Good luck!
@quilteryoyo The AF HM sounds like a great idea. Oh and PUPPERS!
@eleanorhawkins The new trail group sounds so exciting. It feels like you've totally got this, and you're having fun to boot. Yay.6 -
Re: memorial run. I was talking to my husband about it and he pointed out something which I think is important. It’s true that we lost all three people in August. However he pointed out this may not be total coincidence. August is brutal for runners in the Northern Hemisphere. In order NOT to have another tragic loss this year, it might be a better idea to have the memorial run in November, which is the month the previous memorial runs were held. @Avidkeo as a Kiwi you might not have thought about this!4

It’s officially hot here. Got out on the Germantown Greenway just before sundown and it was 85 with a heat index of 91. I guess it’s that time of year for someone to post that chart about the effect of dewpoint on running speed again! Anyway dewpoint was 71 which is just over the border into “icky” without being actually “hellish.” Heck of a time to try to come back from being sick, I could barely crawl along for 5k! I gotta try to get used to this before it gets even hotter. I am not loving the bugs, I got a gnat in my eye, swallowed several more, and it was a constant battle with mosquitos.
Right now it’s 4 am and the weather outside is still hot and gluey. Tornadoes to the west and north of us, hopefully they will slide by.
@Scott6255 the Run the World group is in your neck of the woods now!5 -
Yikes! Thanks for the heads up @rheddmobile! You guys are early. I hadn't planned on any company for a few more days. Sorry the place is a mess, but come on in and put for feet up for a while. We had a cold front blow through last night, so you are just in time. It was 90F here yesterday, but only getting to 73F today.
Dallas is a nice place to visit if you're into shopping (and crowds), eating (who isn't), history (not all good), and general tourism. Most people are familiar with Dallas for the TV show (creatively called Dallas) that was popular in the 1980's. A lot of the filming was done at Southfork Ranch (in Parker actually). As a kid a few of us rode motorcycles from our house to Southfork (about a 20 mile trip). That is the only time I've been there.
The other historical note of course is the assignation of President Kennedy. That is a blight on the city that will never go away.
Closer to where I grew up (Carrollton), Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow robbed the bank downtown in the mid 1930's, and one of their ex-gang members robbed a bank in my current town of Lewisville. Ah, good times.
Much of the city where I live (about 30 miles north of Dallas) is just a normal, quiet smallish town (about 100,000 residents). Downtown has much more of a small town feel, and they try to keep the heritage of the old west alive. It isn't unusual to see this on the weekend
I had a nice 6.2 mile run this morning. It was a Planned easy run. HR stayed in Zone 2 the whole time except for 1:23 in Zone 3. Learning to take it easy isn't easy, but needed.

Hi all! Sorry to drop off the radar, but I've been reading the thread (both end of April and beginning here) and I'm happy to be back. This time of year is always nuts for me with the end of school. I will try and respond here a little bit better, but even if I don't have a ton of time for that I am reading everyone's posts and cheering you on!
I ended up one mile short of my rather modest April goal. Setting a goal of 20 miles total for May. I'm also doing a separate walking goal, but not sure yet if I want to keep track of that here or not. I have the "Walk to Mordor" app where I'm logging my total combined distance every day, because I like things like that.
Distance Log:
5/4 1.5 miles
Total: 1.5/20 miles
Today was the first day it was over 60 degrees! It rained overnight so felt a little muggy but was bearable. I wore a jacket but regretted that by the end.7 -

Thanks for your input. It's from an injury 55 years ago, and it hurts every day -- some days a little and some days a lot. I will say that running really helps to loosen it up.5 -

@noblsheep I'm so glad to see you back. You can do it.
@rheddmobile Sorry you are having such a hard time coming back from your sickness. You're doing great getting out there in those conditions when you aren't feeling the best. I hope you get back to normal soon and that those tornadoes stay away.
@Scott6255 Thanks for the place to rest and the cooler temperatures (not that you really had anything to do with that. LOL). I loved the tv show Dallas. Who wasn't on pins and needles waiting to see who shot JR? Love the old west history and the cattle drives.
Glad to see you back @penguinmama87 !
Thanks @pfeiferlindsey ! You do miss a lot when you miss an entire day here. You're doing great with your running.

That sounds like a really fun race @skippygirlsmom since it ends at the USS Alabama and you get to tour it! I was able to run one race up here that started and ended at the finish line at Kansas Speedway and it was interesting getting to tour all the inner parts of that place (the camber on that track was a pain though). I wish more attractions should have runs like that.
@quilteryoyo I can't help but wonder if the missing mama mouse took out that snake somehow, and the instant manner of it makes me worry about that mama mouse. Be careful!
@Teresa502 I understand about the watch frustration. It's also frustrating when you leave the watch running during the pit stop. Not to mention the furstration of having to make the pit stop (or make it all the way too the pit stop)
Great hiking @katharmonic and @Jarcom! Thanks for sharing the pics @katharmonic
Welcome back @noblsheep!
Way to persevere through the sticky heat and bugs @rheddmobile!
Thanks for sharing about Dallas, Carrollton and Lewisville @Scott6255. I actually have been to all of those locations as my duaghter lived in all of those cities at one point or another (she didn't live on Southfork Ranch, of course)! Visiting Dealey Plaza was seriously one of the weirdest experiences of my life because you are standing there and seeing all the things you've already seen a million times before and nothing truly seemed like it was the first time I got to see those things. It's not the same with other places like visiting the Grand Canyon or pretty much anything else, in those cases when you see it for the first time it's compeltely different from just seeing pictures. Dealey Plaza wass different than that for some reason (or it was for me).
Good luck on your goals @penguinmama87! I think I'm in half a dozen different challenge threads at this point to track various things, so I hear you about wanting to track it in one place.

@rheddmobile your husband is a wise man
@Scott6255 Southfork!!! I watched Dallas religiously. I watch all the stupid Housewives shows and the housewives of Dallas were there on last week’s episode. I’ve only been to Dallas once and it was just to land there to head to West, TX.
@WhatMeRunning the downfall is the shuttle back to the parking lot stops you from touring for long. I thought oh we’ll leave one car in each place, but the lot will be closed in the morning so we can’t leave a car. I’ve been to a bunch of NASCAR tracks and at Dover we sit on our coolers and slide down the track. Daytona you can hardly walk up and if you take the tour they drive along the bottom of the track because the golf cart type tour thing can’t get up enough speed to hold it up on the track, but you can put your hand out and touch the track it’s so steep.

when I was a child my dad caught a field mouse in my bedroom (Baltimore Md) which my cat was chasing but not catching. He put it in a cardboard box and took it out to the fields. It did NOT return which was a good thing because I had heard they tend to come back (or their babies do). The snake thing. That's just creepy.

It's always interesting to me how my body can be SO different on different days. Yesterday my legs were weak as kittens and I turtled out a 5K but it never got better. Today I was back to strong. 8 of the 9 miles were under 10 pace and I managed an under 9 on the last one.
And I totally resisted trying to cut my cals yesterday which when you are eating to TDEE and have some miles would be stupid. Just hard seeing my watch tell me I overate yesterday and was a lazy *kitten*.... Hahahahaha. I really need to look at the big picture rolling weekly so I eat to run versus worry about rest days.8 -
5.1 mile run, average pace of 9:06 min per mile.
Children were at sports practice and due to Covid measures in place, parents are not allowed to watch. Therefore, I made use of my time and went for a short run.
May cumulative:

@eleanorhawkins I am enjoying following your trail club journey!
Yesterday was a holiday here and I got up early to go with 4 other girls from running club to run/hike up a "little" mountain along the Polish-Czech border - 10 miles round trip with about 700 meters of elevation. The plan was hike up, jog flat & down. Their jog tends to be my 5k pace, but it's all a matter of perspective, because one of the girls typically trains in the mountains with the guys, and was out of our sight within a few kilometers. She waited for us at the lodge at the top, and it was a recovery run for her.
The scenery was beautiful. The trip down was actually more challenging for me as I'm taller and apparently don't have good downhill running technique on rocky trail. "Controlled falling" is hard to do when there's mud and loose rocks everywhere - but the rest of the group was somehow doing it with only 2 falls. Then we got to road for the last 2 kilometers and they were going faster than my 5k pace and I just physically could not go any faster. So it was a very challenging trip, but totally worth it.
We got some great group photos, but I don't know if the others want me putting them up on the internet
I've got major DOMS today. But it's a good hurt, like I did something, and not like the "something's wrong" pain I have been having. The stuff that was hurting before is not currently bothering me, other than a little bit in my lower back. My legs are evenly sore, and I can do the "stand on one leg" test on both legs. Honestly that sitting on a lacrosse ball torture seems to have done the most to help, and the ouchy spots are getting harder to find and a little less painful every day. I signed up for a strength challenge on Strava to try to keep me doing it at least 4x/wk.
Here's the problem. I feel like this after 16.5 km/700m elevation gain, and my August race will be double the elevation and 9 more kilometers. I can probably do a lot of uphill power hiking in the race, but my downhill trail form is also weak. I need to actually train in the mountains.
Went for a short bike ride today and did my PT stretches & rolling.11 -
@SummerSkier I understand about resisting those compromising messages from your watch. While it's an invaluable tool with great data, some of the insights and measurements seem to go the wrong way on occasion and it's better to stick with common sense. Recently I've been getting told by noon that my body battery is almost completely drained (when I feel like I'm just starting to get going), but then after afternoon walks and chasing the kids around all evening that dang body battery hasn't drained any further at all. If I paid much attention to it I would have to sit still all day!
Love your elevation numbers @sweetdaisy13
That looks like a great outing @polskagirl01! I'm no good on the downhill part of trails either so I have no advice there. Sounds like this outing happened just in time to tweak your training for your trails race though!5 -
Hi @polskagirl01, trail/mountain runner here.
You've got a while until your race in August, so plenty of time to get used to the hills. I used to find downhill trail running quite difficult, because I always feared falling over flat on my face. Which, I have done a few times, but it's all part of learning I guess!
I still much prefer running uphill though, but unfortunately we've got to come back down to go up again lol.
I completely change my running style when going downhill. I lean slightly forward (this seems daunting at first, but does work) and I take much shorter quicker strides/steps. At first I used to lean back too much and gosh, this absolutely kills my thighs and quads!
So now, shorter and faster steps, concentrating on footfall. If you can do a hilly session each week in the mountain, that will do wonders for your confidence and your speed will improve in time.
I'm terms of exercises to build strength, I find that isometric squat holds and static lunges really help to strengthen your legs.5 -
@SummerSkier Yeah. I've heard mice come back too, but I figure I took them far enough away that they won't. At least I hope that is the case. And, the snake was creepy. Glad you had a good run today. Laughed at what the watch said about your day yesterday. It doesn't know you very well. You are doing great.
@sweetdaisy13 Nice use of your "down time."
Nice hike/run @polskagirl01 ! Looks lovely. Glad you have a group of ladies to run with. I agree that you need to do more practice in the mountains before your race. Downhills can be tricky.

Also have walked 5.0 miles.
Today's scheduled called for a 25 minute foundation run - easy pace. I have felt like I was going to have some tummy issues and my HR has been lower than normal, so was tempted to just walk today. I did give myself permission to quit if I needed to. It turned out to be fine, but I went really slowly. Avg pace was 4.4 mph. Avg HR was 130. I ran on the treadmill because it has been stormy all day, and it was the safe thing to do with my tummy acting up.5 -
@rheddmobile ah that's a good point about the time of year, thank you.
@quilteryoyo nice run. Hope your tummy settles.
@polskagirl01 nice run, well done!3 -
I had a rest day yesterday because garmin saidy load was too large, probably true as I've been going a bit harder the last few days. I'm so glad I did. Today was speed work. So called for 15 min warm up, then 800m at around 5:10min/k then 400m recovery x8 sets.
Whew turned out to be an absolute killer. Good news I finally got some anaerobic training in. The first 5 sets were fine. The last 3 were so hard. I started getting a stitch on them, and stopped for a drink before the final one. I was jogging for the rests between most of them and had to walk the last couple. But I did it! And ended up doing 12k! Crazy! I had mentally thought it would be about 8k, but didn't add on the extra bits. Duh. Oh well.
May goal 150k
1st - 13.96km
2nd - 3km
3rd - 7.5km
5th - 12.65km7 -
Thanks @Avidkeo . It seems to have settled down this afternoon. You did awesome on your run!1
