@polskagirl01that looks like a lovely place to run. I hear you about downhill trail running, I'm super slow and cautious. Downhill running in general my coach has told me to not put the brakes on, but to lean into it and let gravity help you. Which seems much scarier on a trail of course. But I found this set of tips which agrees and maybe there are some other helpful suggestions for you and the rest of us. Main thing of course is to do it more I guess.

I had a short treadmill run of 1.5 miles this morning after yoga class. I had a little time to kill before going to PT so I took advantage just in case I didn't get out later. But I texted a friend and we met after work for our usual 5k of talk therapy. We nicely split airing our problems, she got the way out and I got the way back
I was dismissed from PT today, my back was declared good and I was sent off with instructions to behave and not return. I'm supposed to keep working on glute strength and I asked about whether massage would also help - because they are so very tight all the time - and she said yes, sports massage, and she does that! So she gave me her card for that and now I'm excited to schedule that occasionally because that was the best part of PT, the heating pad and massage work.7 -
Congratulations on being released from PT @katharmonic . It's great that you will still get to see her for the occasional massage. Nice running therapy session too.3

@polskagirl01 just to really confuse things, my coaches are teaching me the opposite of what the rest of the world says and making me learn to throw my weight back on downhills. Probably because I'm likely to just go head over heels down them otherwise, the very first day one of them thought I wasn't going to be able to stop and tried to stand in my way and have me crash into him (yeah, like that was going to happen, I would have thrown myself on the floor to avoid that, lol!) We are talking pretty technical trail downhills with steep inclines and loose stones and stuff though.
Also, we're in exactly the same boat re: speeds, these guys fly along at my race pace just to warm up! Considering I've been run-walk-running for over a year, trying to do an hour at race pace without stopping is.... interesting. Either I'll come out super fit, or totally broken. Still not sure which.
My legs are so tight, not even the evil physio managed to sort them out on Friday. I'm stretching and foam rolling religiously every day and praying they get used to this and don't go on strike.
My husband is still calling them 'my other men' in a jealous tone of voice. One of the guys he works with has just been left by his wife, and another caught his girlfriend in their bed with another guy, so he's going through a jealous phase and doesn't find it funny when I try to reassure him that even if I did want to replace him with any of these guys they're too fast for me to catch!
8 -
Good luck @eleanorhawkins ! I'm not sure I would even attempt running at race pace for an hour. You are going to come out so strong, I think. Sorry your husband is jealous, but I can understand why given what his friends are going through. Don't know if showing him extra attention would help or make him think you're compensating or "guilty." Just hope it doesn't get out of hand for him. He wouldn't take up running with you, would he?3
-
@eleanorhawkins hubby could always join the group and start running too
But then he might get more jealous because they'll be fitter and faster than him, and it could mess up your "you time".
Thanks @katharmonic and @sweetdaisy13 for the advice and link. I'm going to work on it! The forest near us at least has small steep hills that I can practice on when I can't drive to the mountains. But yeah, this was rocky and muddy and I'm going to have to practice. But not today. Day 2 of DOMS tends to be worse and yep, it hurts to move and I'm planning carefully to avoid unnecessary trips up or down the stairs. Did my PT exercises, slowly. It seemed to help, momentarily. Started to walk to the school and barely got out the gate before coming back to tell my hubby to go get the kiddo with the car (our youngest is back to in-person school as of yesterday!). So I'm making lasagne and doing desk work today9 -
@quilteryoyo @polskagirl01 lol yes, I have frequently suggested he could run with me, at which point the long list of ailments and pains and reasons not to gets dragged out. I've also said I'm happy for him to track my Garmin, check my Garmin and/or Strava or even follow me in the car or on a bike if he's really that worried. It'll pass.
@polskagirl01 the hills thing really is just practise practise practise apparently. I've been told to get as much elevation into my long runs as I can, even if that means I end up doing less mileage for the time being. Trying not to panic over that prospect!

Headed out the door about 4:45 this morning. Because of the cloud cover, it was very dark. After about a mile, it started sprinkling rain. By the time I passed by my driveway it was coming down harder so I headed home ending up with 1.64 miles. I got on the treadmill but only lasted 2 miles. I don't know how some of you run so long on it.5

I think it's an awesome idea and I'm in, whatever gets decided on.
One suggestion though, if possible I would ask PV's wife and son about the charity.
@eleanorhawkins I like that idea of asking PV's wife - hopefully a charity that has an international reach - it can create a paperwork - tax nightmare as I learned in the past. Spent more time chasing secondary confirmation documentation than any other part of my tax's.Re: location of the thread
I attempted to delete the discussion the discussion I started (in the wrong location) several times, but it is still there. So I renamed it to "This is the WRONG May 2021 Monthly Running Challenge", and the only thing in the body is the link to the correct location. I see it is tagged as "Closed" now, so hopefully no one else will be able to post there.
@Scott6255 it's gone now, I still had an old link and tried it.
Still in recovery - rebuild from zero mode. Alternate days and double dip on weekends
3km hike and 3 km return run with 4 flights of stair repeats - need to get a picture of our 2 long stair sets we have in town. Use the hike/speed walk as an extended warmup to get every joint and muscle warm and loose.SummerSkier wrote: »Legs are noodles today after being a weekend warrior. LOL

5/2 - 5.66 mile 82 min easy effort
5/3 - 2.11 mile 30 min easy effort
5/4 - 2.15 mile 30 min easy effort
5/5 - 1.66 mile 20 min stamina effort
May total: 11.58 miles
May goal: 95 miles
I was really happy with the stamina effort run today (LT1 or upper-end aerobic for anyone understandably wondering what that really means in this particular case). My run segments were quite farther than in prior weeks meaning I am closer to being able to just run nonstop at an aerobic pace. My legs didn't want to kill me on those stretches either. So I'm feeling the changes from the last 6 weeks of training. I know, duh, of course I'm going to feel it. It's just nice to feel and see the rewards coming in is all. And I like to blather on and on endlessly about this stuff. Carry on!5 -
5 May update:
May 1 8.1 miles/8.1 cum goal 200
May 2 9.12 miles/ 17.22 cum
May 3 3.1 miles/ 20.32 cum
May 4 9.06 miles/29.38 cum of 200 goal
May 5 5.01 miles/34.39 cum
I can't even imagine trail running much less down a steep grade with rocks. To me that's a broken ankle or messed up knee and concussion. LOL. Kudos to yall trying to do that. Give me solid even pavement.
Quite pleased with today's run. The weather was absolutely perfect (which you will not hear me mention for the next 4 months in Tx) . Even after the 9 yesterday I was quite happy with a pace under 10 and the last split was under 9!!! Very unusual for me to get that on a longer run. But it was enjoyable. Hope everyone has the BEST runs today.7 -
May total: 6.5 miles
5/1: 5.5 miles
5/3: 1 mile
I never did figure out my plan and calculate my mileage goal for the month, but that's fine because it's already blown. The weather this week has been horrible and my motivation is waning. The humidity was just stifling and I didn't feel like running. I talked myself into running a mile and seeing how I felt. I felt like quitting. So, I walked home. Then, the next day I still didn't feel like running so I went on a walk again.
Then this morning, the crappy weather blew out and it was gorgeous. Of course, I had to be at work early so couldn't run in the gorgeous weather. Oh, well. It's supposed to be ok tomorrow morning so I'll get out then. Sometimes I need to kick myself out the door and make myself do it, and sometimes I just need to give myself a little grace and take it easy. It will be ok. My fitness won't disappear in 2 days.7 -
@eleanorhawkins and @polskagirl01 – Hills on trails terrify me. I am so worried about losing control. Usually I just walk down when it gets too steep. Luckily most of the trail races around here are relatively flat.
@quilteryoyo – I would flip out if I saw either of those in my house! Here it is snake season and we have come across a couple of copperheads in our neighborhood. That has me scanning the sidewalks like crazy for the rest of a run.
@katharmonic – beautiful hiking pics
@skippygirlsmom – So happy you were cleared to run! Seems like your recovery is going really well.
@pfeiferlindsey – What is this blasphemy about wanting warm weather!?! Noooooo!!!!

April was all about recovery and May is getting the body & mind back into training mode.
I set out this morning to do 10x400 at 9:40 to 10:00 min pace. My goal was to do what I could. If I did all 10 and nailed the paces? AWESOME. If I only did 2 and paces were off? Also AWESOME.
I ended up doing 8 of 10 and nailing pace for all of them (even though I was all over the place my average was spot on).
I wanted to quit at 4, 5, 6, and 7. But I kept going to 8. My legs were jello and I started walking the recovery intervals around round 6. I pushed myself but not too hard.

@polskagirl01 I hope those DOMS go away quickly. Sounds painful.
WHAT? @Tramboman ! You actually enjoyed the treadmill?! Great running.
@Teresa502 Sorry about the rain. I find it helps pass the time on the treadmill to watch some inane TV show and/or to vary the speed every 2 - 5 minutes. At least, that helps me.
@juliet3455 Sounds like you are doing great!
@WhatMeRunning Yay for seeing results from your 6 weeks of base build up.
Yay for such a nice run @SummerSkier !
@martaindale Great attitude. Giving yourself grace is important. You're right, you aren't going to lose any fitness in 2 days.
Nice @RunsOnEspresso ! Sounds like your getting in that training mode quickly!4 -

Good to see you @juliet3455. Sounds like you are building carefully and consistently.
And hi @garygse!
@WhatMeRunning - it is so rewarding when you notice that your training is paying off. Great job!
Great running @SummerSkier - well done on the fast split at the end of a long run!
@martaindale I think we all have those times when we need a break and just can't face the weather or how it feels. Good for you to give yourself the break and you will be back to it feeling refreshed soon.
@sweetdaisy13 it must be good to be back at running group after so long! Great work on your run.

After work 5k. I was so tired that I fell asleep in the few minutes I had between changing my clothes to go running and actually leaving the house. Good thing I set my timer! Not sure why I'm so exhausted but the dreary and chilly weather doesn't help. Curling up in bed is much more attractive. I managed with the help of my friend to get the run done though.

May Goal: 100 Miles
5/2: 9.75 miles
5/4: 5.52 miles
5/5: 5.30 miles
20.57/100 miles completed for May
The last couple of days have been crazy busy, but I did get a run in yesterday and today so I thought I would post my runs and then go back and catch up on the thread.. The weather was really nice both days. I ran 5.5 miles yesterday and 5.3 miles today. Yesterday I saw a possum and a skunk. The possum was just walking down the sidewalk right toward me. I stepped off the curb but he just walked right by me about 3 feet away and didn't pay any attention to me. Luckily I wasn't as close to the skunk. He was across the street from me and he didn't seem to notice me. Today's run was uneventful, but I did get to play the new episode of Zombies Run so that was fun. I think I will switch my Friday rest day to tomorrow and run on Friday. My feet are feeling kind of achy again and my second toe on my left foot feels kind of sore. Hopefully a little rest will help.

Hi All - just a quick check in for me. We are at the hotel while the house is fumigated and I forgot the charger for my laptop. The battery is dieing and of course I didn't notice until it needed charging! We were all exhausted on Tuesday when we finally got out of the house and here. I was also in a lot of pain having tripped/slid/something at agility class and re-injured my hamstring when it was already sore from running I guess. I also think all the packing, bending, squatting and moving boxes contributed.
I planned to take Hobbes the Vizsla for a run in a preserve near the hotel but then thought better of it because he just got a bath on Tuesday and I was worrying about ticks and rattlesnakes. So we headed out for a walk and came across what looked like a horse trail and decided to explore. It ended up being quite the hike but it was fun and tied into the preserve trail I had planned to run originally. I did fall once slipping on sand over hard packed dirt on a steep downhill. I slid down on my butt with Hobbes 'helping' by jumping on me and trying to lick me. Other than being dirty I was completely uninjured. It was a good walk/hike with downhill and flat running. My quads are gonna be sore tomorrow!
In the middle of the picture off in the distance is the river I usually run along.
Hobbes is looking down at the hotel where we are staying (red roofed buildings)
I will be back tomorrow to update my mileage and comment more.
I did want to say as far as the memorial run is concerned. I like the idea of November but don't really think it needs to be tied to a charity. It could just be a time for us to remember and reflect on those we have lost that were important to us. It also gives us a chance to talk about all three of them so others who didn't have to opportunity to know them can understand what they meant to us and why they were so special.9 -

7.5 miles this morning. Got up late, and really didn't feel in the mood for a run. But went through the motions and got out the door. 1st 4 miles were rough, but the last 3.5 ended up ok. It was a really nice morning (upper 50s, no wind). Sun was actually coming up by the time I was finishing, so I really was running late
6 -
@sweetdaisy13 Glad you are able to get back with your running club.
@katharmonic Great job on getting out and running even when you would rather curl up on the couch. Did you feel more energetic afterwards?
Nice running @kgirlhart and @Scott6255 !
@shanaber Glad your fall didn't make your hamstring worse. I hope it is feeling better today.
I wasn't supposed to work today, but they need me. I guess it's nice to be needed. However, I had signed up for a 4 mile run for charity that has to be run either today or tomorrow. I'm working all day tomorrow, so the plan was to run it today and add 2 miles so I could get my long run in for the week. I'm sticking with that plan and told them that I would be in after I got finished. Heading out in a few minutes for the run.

May total: 11.3 miles

Though not as nice as yesterday morning, it was still pretty cool this morning. I was actually looking forward to running after taking a couple of days off. I ran a trail in my neighborhood then added on this loop I rarely run just so I could see how much mileage it adds. Ended up with almost 5 miles and it was really enjoyable.
I forgot to tell you guys my snake story. It is fully snake season here but I don’t usually see them when I run. I think it’s too early for them as the sun isn’t fully out yet. But the last couple of times I went out with my family we were running later and we have seen snakes, like almost stepped on them. The first was a little garter snake that my daughter spotted as I was about to step on it, so I dodged in a weird mid-air twist and the snake flipped out and started doing its own mid-air twist which freaked me out even more. The second one was a copperhead that I ended up kind of jumping over. That was the 2nd copperhead my family had seen on a run but my first. This morning on strava, one of the local guys I follow mentioned he jumped over his 3rd copperhead yesterday. It’s crazy because I really haven’t seen a lot of snakes in previous years. The whole thing has me on high alert and scanning the sidewalk/trails constantly.8
