Sorry I’ve been absent this week. I’ve been reading and liking though. My dad has been in the hospital. He is doing much better and came home yesterday. Thankfully, I was able to work from his room in the hospital during the morning so that my mom didn’t have to spend all day there but this meant my morning run didn’t happen for a couple of days but that’s ok. They have sacrificed enough for me during my life. Yesterday, I rode in a charity bike ride. It’s called Tour de Possum. There were about 150 riders and it was a beautiful day for it although it was getting pretty warm when we finished. I did the short route which was 24 miles. There was also a 40 mile route and the field was probably split 50/50. Some serious riders and some like me just out to enjoy the ride.
Great racing @ContraryMaryMary! When I wake to the wind howling, especially in the winter, my first instinct is to roll over and go back to sleep. Congrats on being the 3rd overall female – very impressive!!
I love your list of lessons learned from your long run yesterday @quilteryoyo. Can you tolerate Gu’s? I love the chocolate ones – reminds me of eating cake icing!

@quilteryoyo - Like you observed, I always found regularly timed interval run/walks a bit incongruent with the irregularities of terrain. Made zero sense to run uphill and walk downhill on the premise it would allow me to preserve strength for later on in a long run. On a flat course timed intervals are perfect though! The method is perfectly valid, it's just about executing it per the true intention of it.
What I did for hill training a few years back was find a long run route with a lot of elevation change and set high/low alerts on my watch to alert me when I got to the high end of Z3 (usually going uphill) which allowed me to walk the remainder and either kiss Z4 or go just slightly into it by the time I crested the hill, and then give a low alert in the mid to lower end of Z2 to keep me from walking too easily for too long.
In case that helps at all or gives any ideas.5 -
Congratulations @ContraryMaryMary on your podium wins! I don't envy you running in that wind!
@quilteryoyo way to get that long run in despite all the difficulty. Getting stung twice in one day is awful 😔

However... I do run in shorts and cover my legs on sunscreen. They just don't seem to be affected the same way as my arms and shoulders.
Those shoes are pretty but I would be so sad to get them all dirty as I am sure they would be quickly!
I’ve noticed that too. I catch myself being lazy with the leg sunblock even though I know I need to do it because, yeah, they just don’t get the same level of exposure as the shoulders/back area. It’s just laziness. I mean, I’m already doing my arms and back. It would take like 2 extra minutes to do my legs. I don’t know why I do that!
Those shoes will definitely get dirty fast. Not the color combo I would usually go for, but they were on sale!!3 -
@ContraryMaryMary Good job!!
@quilteryoyo I am terrified of flying stinging insects, especially yellowjackets. I’ve heard their stings are really bad. Hope it feels better soon!2 -

Today's plan was a long run of 8.2 miles, 1 hr 29 min @ 10:50 mi/min. That is not as long as I usually run on Sundays so I started out thinking I might just ditch Hal's plan. I did try to stick to the pace though which was actually kind of hard because it was so hot. In the summer when it is hot I don't usually pay attention to my pace and I run pretty slow. I saw Sunny the donkey today. He was in the house looking out the front window. It was hilarious so I stopped to take a picture, but he saw me and came out on the porch before I could get one. I did notice some chickens in the backyard. I don't know if they are allowed in the house or not. 😆
It was a pretty hot run and the closer I got to the house the more I thought that Hal was probably right. And 8 miles would be good. But when I got home I was at 8.63 and I just couldn't do that so I ran around the block to get to 9 miles. So I ended up with 9 miles in 1 hr 38 minutes at 10:50 mi/min. So even though I went over I felt good about it. And so far after 4 runs with Hal I have an A- and Hal says to keep up the consistency.
And it looks like I surpassed my 100 mile goal today!
Great job on your race @contrarymarymary! I think wind is my least favorite weather to run in. Congratulations on your podium finish!
@quilteryoyo I hope you are feeling ok. Two stings in one day sucks!
@teresa502 I am glad your dad is doing better. Staying with him and giving your mom a break is worth missing a couple of runs.

So who is watching the olympics? I watch every second I can and I really like watching sports I only see during the olympics. As much as I love to see the US win, I often find myself rooting for underdogs from countries who don’t podium as much. Except for Simone Biles, I want to see her dominate! The pride of Houston!6
-
@Teresa502 Glad your dad is feeling better and out of the hospital. It's so stressful when a parent is sick. The bike ride sounds like fun. I have not tried Gu's. I guess it is time I found some and tried them out.
@kgirlhart I love your stories about Sunny. You are going to have your camera ready as you near his house next time...just in case. Sounds like you had a really nice run. I probably wouldn't have stopped at 8.63 miles either. Congrats on surpassing your 100 mile goal already! The stings did pretty much suck. The first one wasn't too bad, but that yellow jacket...still hurts and my calf has a baseball sized swelling. It is feeling a bit better. I'm going to ice it again tonight.
@martaindale I know I should probably watch it more, but I'm just not into it this year. I do like the gymnastics. I love Simone Biles.2 -
@kgirlhart love that you get to see your donkey so often 🥰 I guess I missed the post where you named him. Sunny is a good name. Nice to see he adopted some chickens too!

@ContraryMaryMary congrats on your race! Great job battling that wind and coming away with 1 and 3rd! Awesome!
@teresa502 glad your dad is doing better and out of the hospital. Nice job getting in the charity bike ride too.
@quilteryoyo love your lessons learned also. Running in a field is terrible. That is a lesson I have learned before too. Sorry about the sting. Those hurt! Nice long run!
@kgirlhart I love Sunny the donkey and am imagining Sunny inviting more friends over to hang out.

I didn't run until 5 pm today. It was humid, as expected. I ran the shady trails around the lakes and took a couple of little breaks just because I wasn't particularly feeling it. And it was nice to take a little time to sit and think and look at the lake for a bit.6 -
Great effort on your long run @quilteryoyo, and ouch on the sting - I'm slightly allergic and remember having an aching arm for two days after a paper wasp sting. Antihistamines are your friend in this situation (I always forget at the time as I only get stung once every 5-10 years!).2
-
@ContraryMaryMary congrats on your podium finish!
@quilteryoyo impressed that you finished all those miles in this heat, bug stings and all!
My husband and I got out later than we planned and ended up running in 94 degree heat, with a heat index which was officially 107 but according to the local weather thingie was 115, I think that is officially the hottest heat index we have ever run in. We were planning 5k running and 5k walking and I was like, we are not taking a walk break before 5k no matter what, I want to be able to say I ran 5k in this. Man it was nasty though. Dead still, full sunlight. The 2nd mile of our run is around the track at Cox park and is mostly direct sunlight. We were sort of staggering from shady patch to shady patch, we started laughing because we could hear each other gasp with relief at the exact same moment whenever we passed under a tree.
I notice there’s a sort of code whenever the weather is quite this zany, whenever you pass another runner you both get a very serious look on your face and nod seriously because you are both Serious Runners and not at all lunatics courting heatstroke. Today the runners were us and three very fit guys who I think I recognize from the local fleet feet. And a lot of walkers who were dressed like they intended to run at some point but decided it was a dumb plan.
The Old Wagon Trail crosses over several little residential streets. On our way back we passed a couple of little boys trying to set up a folding table at one of the intersections. My husband stopped to help them wrangle their table and they gave him a free sample of “Super Booster Juice” which is half Gatorade and half gummy bear juice (is that even a thing?). He says it was the sweetest thing he had ever put in his mouth. And also that the cold juice is the only reason he made it back to the car!
We cut our walk short for 5 miles total.8 -

Did you see the men's triathlon today? I missed the swim part but caught part of the biking and the running legs. I thought the guy from Norway who won it would fizzle out before the end. His running form was not the typical fast runner form you expect. They were running 4:40 - 4:50 pace per mile! (An American competitor came in sixth place!)3 -
@katharmonic It sounds like you had a nice time at the lake, even if you weren't feeling the run. Water can be so calming.
Thanks @ContraryMaryMary . Stings usually don't bother me a lot, but this one really got me.
Thanks @rheddmobile ! I'm impressed that you ran in that heat! I thought mine was bad enough.

July 10: 4.94
July 14: 2.42

July 21: 5ish? I ran for an hour in the middle of nowhere with no cell service and on unmarked roads, so...I really don't know precisely how far I went! But it was nice and breezy with some misty rain toward the end, which helped me cool off! I wish I could have made it work one more day on vacation, but I did get to hike through a beautiful gorge one other day so that was also some great exercise.
July 23: 5.03
Goal: 41.44/40 miles - made it!6 -

I also didn’t see the swim. The broadcast we were watching cut it off but did show the start, where there was a very large boat in the way right at the dive station so only some of the field dove in when the horn went off. They had to recall the start and get the boat out the way. Weird but funny. Those guys were absolutely crushing it in that heat. The guy from Norway looked like he was struggling and I was shocked that he was able to hang on to that pace for so long,2 -
Wow, @rheddmobile that is some heat. You are definitely a serious runner who should only do serious runner nods from now on!3
