WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR SEPTEMBER 2021

I have read all but I'm getting into busy period and it's harder to take the time to respond abundantly.
I tracked and kept on track almost all days in past 3 weeks or so exept the day before yesterday, and yesterday evening. But weight hasn't budged yet! I had a work thing at home and we ended up eating together here. The colleague-friend had brought onions and potatoes ( ) in case we eat together and I made an omelet and he - some kind of potato stew - when guys cook they are often way heavy on the oil!
well- no dessert and I didn't have wine. could we be worse. have to run today. long meeting shortly, live, outside of home.3 -
Woke up early thinking about my son's visit, but I slept well.
I do yoga every day, except on a running day. All those stretches Machka kindly pictured and more, apart from the legs on the wall. At my age (nearly 72) I think it gets more and more important to do everything we can to stop ourselves seizing up! I also do strength exercises, like press ups from the knees (hate them), one leg bridges, clamshells, side leg raises! (I have a vulnerable knee) and one leg dips. Then I do dumbbell weights. I feel better than I did at 48. Very few mobility problems.
I used to be obese, weak, very stiff and with a weak knee and leg and a weak ankle on the other leg. Huge mobility problems which were affecting my life. This was at 60. Even getting in a car was hard.
I started small, joined a Pilates, then a yoga group, started exercising on machines slowly, joined mfp, joined this thread 9 years ago, and slowly built up my fitness. My husband encouraged me all the way. Then I started running.
Now I love to exercise. I used to despise it. It takes up a large part of my day, but it is so worth it for the benefits in feeling good. Mentally and physically.
I know a lot of us have exercise as part of our lives. Dancing, horse riding, walking, cycling, yoga, tai chi, tennis, etc etc etc. Wonderful! For those who are hesitant, I would just say start small, with whatever you can manage, and slowly build up. I used to think I would explode if I tried to do more than 200 burn a day. Now a normal day is 900, but it took me years to get there!
I had no idea, when I was unfit, how good feeling fit feels, at any age. When the painter was painting the stairs I had to walk up two long, steep flights of stairs, carrying tea and snacks, over bumpy, uneven groundsheets, without touching the wet sides or rails. I was very glad of my exercise regime as it was no problem.
If anyone had told me, eleven years ago, that I would be fitter and slimmer at 71, I would not have believed them! I thought I was was stuck with it. But ....... the first step is the hardest. Build a habit, build it slowly, make it a part of your life. A little bit regularly is better than a sprint then bust.
So good luck, to those who are just starting out on your journey! Xxxxxxxx

For the newcomers and those of us who have been here a while ... what is your favourite sport or exercise. Here are a few ideas.

Everyone is wearing masks in public again. DH ordered some from amazon and likes them. I like the masks our friend made for us.2

I survived the visit to the dentist. It is stressful in so many ways starting with having to drive for thirty minutes to get there and find a parking place in a crowded neighborhood. I rarely go anywhere and when I do, it's to a place with a roomy parking lot. Then, after all this time of being distanced, spending an hour with someone close and with her hands in my mouth is overwhelming. It was a small thing compared to what others are experiencing but I came home feeling overwhelmed and in need of an afternoon nap and relaxation.
Barbie in NW WA8 -
Bravo Barbie! Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
The painter has finished! Fabulous job and ridiculously cheap. Nicest man ever. I have provisionally booked him for next August to finish the landing and top stairs. DH said he might ask him earlier and pay for it if he can fit us in in the winter. I think DH must have taken our recent argument to heart as he offered to pay for the whole thing! I insisted on paying the third I promised for this time.
He always seems to need a bit of time for things to sink in. He is a good man.
We moved the furniture back and put a different painting up. It all looks so lovely we don't want to cover the walls with pictures.
Then I watered the geraniums, and swept the front porch and the garden path! It's amazing what a visitor will do for you.
Now just to get the curry started before I set off.

Hi All. We just returned from 18 days of vacation, most of which was completely offline. That part was nice. The few pounds gained was not nice.
However, because my knee didn't heel, I need to try something else to get it working again. So, I am in the market for an indoor exercise bike. For those who have them, any recommendations?
Thanks!

I use a real bicycle on a trainer. Our next move will likely be getting smart trainers ... eventually.
But if I were going for something that is not a real bicycle, I'd get a spin bike. Not a stationary bike but one that "rides" like a fixed gear. A proper spin bike.

Barbie – I am delighted that you survived your visit to the dentist. I hope your next visit is less stressful. Last year our neighbor recommended a dentist that is within walking distance of our house. We drive there in bad weather but walk if it is nice. We are very happy with her work.
Heather – Your entryway is lovely. I particularly like the stained-glass in your front door and side lights. The stained-glass hanging light is also delightful.
Tina – We have two terra-trykes in the garage on trainers. (No car enters our garage because it is full.) The front wheels are locked and the back wheel does the work of exercise. The gym where I go has stationary bikes that track calories. I like to ride for about a half an hour.
Rebecca – I hope your DH is doing well. How long does it take to get there from Whidbey Island? :flowerforyou:
Our weather this morning is lovely. Have a great day!

I would get a trainer for my bike, but the bike is big and heavy and I want something quieter that is easy to move around. Someday, I'm hoping to make a little "gym" area in the house, but it likely won't be soon.

We left at 4:15 am then before we got off the island, our check tires light went off. So it was looking for gas stations with air. On our second one we scored. It was only 49' so the wheels just needed more air. We arrived UW of Medicine hospital at about 6:15 am. Only had to wait for 15 minutes until we could start all the testing. Done by 8 am and now we wait, until 12 to have lunch, then main appointment is at 2 pm. Lee's in the car sleeping and will come fetch me at 12 noon. I'm in a comfy chair, never can sleep in our car. I end up just watching him sleep!
Long day! Husband is doing great though.

I use one of my older road bicycles on my trainer. It's not that comfy outside but works well inside.0 -
Good afternoon ladies
Well at least it is here in Connecticut
I filed a formal complaint with the board ,this kid living with his grandma over me is driving me crazy..
2 -
Allie - I hope your complaint solves the problem, and the kid stops his noisy behavior. Good luck!0
-
We shall see if one of the people is over 55 then they are aloud to live here, but his behavior is just very disruptive and wakes me up and gets Alfie worked up3
-
I saw this today on FB and it spoke to me.6
-
Heather ... love your entryway and especially the leaded glass in your door and side panels.
Barbara ... you're so right about the blood clot. Both the orthopedic doctor and my primary doctor have called me personally (which I find astounding in today's times) to discuss treatment plans. Primary decided to be more aggressive than the orthopedic. Your happy hour with friends sounds lovely.
Rita ... I love my sons ... but other people's children suck the life blood out of me!
Tina ... refresh my memory...what is your knee injury?
We continue to receive meals from friends. I have really lost my appetite. LOL! That didn't come out quite right... although some of my friends should really use a cook book. But seriously, for the first time in my life I'm not hungry nor noshing on snacks all day. A believer in fasting and autophage ... I'll be interested to see if this helps with healing.
Another beautiful fall-like day. I'm sitting by an open screen door letting the sunshine in.

Beth near Buffalo.
I don't know what happened. It's been bothering me for 1.5 years. I suspect a major redesign of my trusted model of running shoe did it, but I cannot prove it. I've tried PT twice with no resolution. I just took 3 weeks off after doing PT for 6 weeks and it still flares up. Mostly, if I am walking or standing a lot. It gets stiff if I don't move it too (like nearly constantly) and I cannot bend it as far as I used to. The doc nor the PT has a real clue. I need an MRI, but insurance doesn't seem to want to pay for anything these days, so I'm in a battle with them already for other things they just don't' want to pay for. So, I thought I'd try the stationary bike...just grasping at straws.
Tina in CA5 -
Well ladies I hope you will indulge me in a little pity party and then ill be quiet..
Every Labor Day weekend for as long as I can remember for generations we have gone to the cottage,
We celebrated my paternal grandmother's and my brothers birthday.. ohhhh the fun we had,all the cousins, the aunts , uncles, nieces, nephews, just had had a house full..my grandmother was born as her sisters were up the road in Exeter N.H. which is about 15 miles as the crow flies.. and there family came from Pennsylvania and brought the first Peach orchard to that area, hence the peach ice cream. But i digress..
So we would all gather there and have a huge turkey dinner, all the trimmings, cocktails and snacks all around and you'll get a kick out of this here I am and my great aunt always called me her party girl,i would roll out the antique wicker tea cart with the snacks and booze on it, and at 4-5 yrs old I could mix a drink although Dodo drank County Fair on the Rocks lol
I learned to make the custard for the ice cream from the Fanny Farmer cook book ,which is still there..
And of course we would walk to the beach which was just a 1/4 mile down the road at low tide and look for sea urchins and crabs and things..
Then at night we would play sardines? Has anyone ever heard of that?
This place is big..3 sleeping porches and 4 bedrooms ,so you put all the shades down and all the lights off,and one person goes upstairs and hides..give them 5 minutes or so..
Then everyone goes upstairs to find them without turning on the lights ,all by feel ,it gets hysterical.. when you find the person you hide with them and dont say a word until there is one lone person asking hey were did everyone go.,my grandpa fell asleep on a bed far over near a wall and nobody found him lol.
So you see all the fun we have had over the years ,while my dad grew up,and my brother and I grew up,and my kids grew up and now that my dad has passed .and that I am no longer helping Jean im sort of the outcast and there is no more Labor day weekends at least not that I am invited to.. it just really hurts my heart..
Ok that was a long one... im sure everyone is snoozing by now.. Love ya all8 -
Yes my cousin used to have Labor Day picnics, but I haven't been invited for several years now. It would be awkward anyway because her politics are different and she doesn't keep it quiet. Life goes on, and these things come and go. Come to think of it, I never invited her to my house. We lived two hours away.
On the good side I walked 24 minutes. On the bad side, I gained another pound. I've lost seven pounds since I started MFP a couple years back. I seem to be on more of a maintenance diet.
Annie in Delaware4 -
picked up daycare girl at school then stopped for a little picnic lunch at the nice park on the way home- she had a "C" lunch(just happened that way)Colby cheese, crackers, cucumbers and cantaloupe. I had 1 oz of Colby cheese and half a cantaloupe. Weather is perfect. I let her play with another little girl we met on Tuesday while I walked around the playground(had her in my sights the whole time-playground is not very big)-walked for over 30 min.
I will be walking with my friend later tonight- miss walking with her every day.
