Less Alcohol ~ OCTOBER 2021 ~ One Day At A Time đ

Last week of the month is here!
Mission accomplished yesterday - had 2 servings of wine last night and stopped by 6pm. Eating a bit before helped as did the whole bottle of mineral water I guzzled. The full-and-satisfied sensation kicks in and I just don't feel like continuing to drink alcohol. It's a different story when I am running on an empty stomach.
Husband stuck to the rules too. We'll repeat today with me shooting for 1.5 - easy to do using a small-ish glass and pouring less than 4 oz. I'll just trick myself by drinking water before and during.

@Womona I can relate to what you're saying about the carbs. Especially in my mid-50s with the estrogen drop, carbs are making me retain water and bloat up - like immediately. This is why I am ramping up the running and need to exercise more. I did ditch the gluten long ago but now carbs like plain potato are making my midsection expand. Ugh. I've been avoiding the scale since it's temporary but still, I am not liking this change!5

I am continuing with my usual goals, 16-20 AF days per month.
Diary style
Thursday October 21 - Drinks - Had a great day, then a hike, then a couple of drinks with my friend that I went hiking with.
Friday October 22 - AF - Rainy and kind of yucky. A Grand Marnier would have been nice, but I am heading into split shifts again, so didn't.
Saturday October 23 - AF - Rough long day at work with only a 45 minute break in between shifts - felt like having a drink, didn't.
Sunday October 24 - 2 drinks. Still planning on making my 16AF minimum for the month.
Rolling total - 13AF days out of 24 days.5 -
Greetings, all. Nice seeing comments and perspectives from those new to the thread. Chuckling to myself about the carb/bread comments.
Just returned from Italy, where it seemed every meal had wheat flour as the main course with minor garnishes of cheese, sauce, cured meat, or fish. Rarely saw a vegetable that was not heavily doused in oil and cooked. Delicious, yes, but not a vegetable heavy couple weeks of eating. (Or meat heavy for that matter.) A dizzying array of pastries at breakfast, pizza at lunch and pasta at dinner. I don't avoid gluten at all but normally just don't eat very much of it. So a big change from the norm. And drinking.... my word. When I say we drank as much local wine as we possibly could, I mean we drank as much as we could, at it was all local wines. Very, very fun. Some of these are such small production to start with, and after the recent wine tariffs, producers just aren't shipping wine to the US at all. So all those tastes will have to stay happy (if fuzzy) memories. Drank every day. Had dessert every day. The hiking was spellbinding.
Was out of town 2 weeks before the Italy trip helping 2 different family members in 2 different places with moves, and that was super fun, too. Also more drinking than normal. And this week I travel to gather with high school mates for a week, and that is not a AF crowd, either. All put together, it is well over a month off my normal routine. E.g. no strength training in all that time. That will take patience and persistence to get back on track. My work life had pretty arduous travel, and since I stopped working, not a week goes by that I don't relish not having to go someplace, so I'm not a wanderlust kinda gal. I think the pandemic just created a big backlog of stuff people close to me put off and the logjam is breaking now. Although it has all been super fun, I will look forward to a simpler November. And getting back in the normal groove. I'll try to drop a couple of hiking photos momentarily...6 -
Well I am happy to report that the heavy side effects from the new medication are dissipating. I think I will even get to start going back to the gym which is good for my mental health.
I am looking forward to the end of the month and a new start in November!
@Womona @globalhiker I can relate to the carb gain! I noticed this many years ago. I too have removed a lot of processed food whenever I can, and breads are something I can only tolorate a few times per week. It's is hard when you are a popcorn and toast fan

What a relief to be feeling better, lmlmrn. Side effects sound quite severe! Ok, here is a photo attempt.
The arrow is where we started, Luna Convento hotel with the picturesque pool and Saracen tower, and we are maybe a bit more than half way to the gorgeous Villa Cimbrone gardens in Ravello.
"Path of the gods" is popular hike between Praiano & Positano. The arrow is where we started in Praiano, the asterisk is the abandoned Convento di San Dominico with well tended fruit & vegetable garden.
Same hike looking towards Positano (arrow is our hotel).
Hard to pick just one sunset photo. First is at our Sant' Agata hotel with a rainstorm hanging over Vesuvius. The second is in Ischia.

@ahoy_m8
Love the pictures! Thank you for sharing your experience. Looks like quite a few hikes that look difficult given the elevation and distance. I would love to hear more about your On Foot Holidays. Were the instructions very good? The transfers to hotels for your luggage smooth? Would you book another trip through them?3 -
@Lilylady3k
The luggage transfers were a dream. We felt so spoiled. Instructions were good. 2parts:
1) They sent map files for a tracking app that uses your smartphone GPS to map your actual steps on your intended route. It works without cellular connectivity which is nice when youâre avoiding international roaming charges. We carried batteries but it turns out that using GPS alone with cellular turned off didnât use much battery power at all. It was really helpful.
2) they also provided printed maps with waypoints & instructions in a separate sleeve for each day. These were incredibly helpful. In many cases, getting into or out of town would have been really hard without the printed details.
There was one day where the Italian park service has been rerouting a big section of the hike, so the tracking app wasnât an exact match. The instructions gave fair warning of the deviation and that it would be more difficult. It was the longest hike, and my impression is it was the most difficult pathfinding, too. It was raining that day so we didnât do that hike, sadly. Hence I canât comment on how adequate the descriptions of that segment were. It sounds like itâs been in flux since 2019.
Finally, they provided a local contact and use the location app âwhat3wordsâ in case help is needed. We didnât need it, but itâs a really cool idea. I think we would use them again. It was a little cumbersome on the front end getting all the hotels set up, and the pricing wasnât very transparent, but the people were nice and the service was good. I kind of tear up when I think about how beautiful it was.8 -
Super cool pix @ahoy_m8! What a great time! Coastline plus hills and maybe wine and possibly gelato....? Sounds like a dream vacation. Tell us more about the food
Nothing close as exciting on my end. Accomplished AF night with 2 bottles of Perrier "Pink Grapefruit" flavor. Every time my mind asked for wine, I drank more of the Perrier and it did the trick. Who knows, yes it's not cheap but at least it's healthier than wine.5 -
@ahoy_m8
Wonderful photos!!!!!
Thank you so much for posting.
Oh, and you got your strength training in during helping people move.
You mentioned that you used to have to travel quite a bit for work. Judging by the photo, you worked as a ... supermodel??
Such an active and picturesque journey. Way to walk the earth! Really really glad that you got to go : - )7 -

Itâs not for the faint of heart, let me tell you! I remember those heady days when I could eat whatever I wanted. Itâs so different now with all these hormonal changes!!5 -
@ahoy_m8 what beautiful pictures! You guys look awesome! Your vacation sounds just dreamy. I love all those views, and how fun to plan your trip around hiking! Iâm sure the wine was out of this world. As for the food, Iâve heard the flour is different in Italy and doesnât cause the same reactions as it does in America. If thatâs true, sign me right up!5
-
@ahoy_m8 thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures and your vacation adventure. Simply gorgeous.
Hard to believe this is the last week of October. It has flown by. Busy is good and it was a lovely Indian Summer here that made it pass quickly to.
Oh but then cold weather, holiday pressures and being confined to a living space with your S.O. who is not working much this winter.
We've done this dance before and gotten past it. BRING IT ON.
AF Sunday and Monday. Halloween is Saturday ( my given drink day if I want it) this has always been my favorite day of the year. Not feeling it this time. May or may not attend a costume party we are invited to Saturday night. We'll see.......6 -
AF again yesterday, no craving for it. Had a very late dinner with lots of veggies. Thatâs the one thing about my job, I get home so late, I like to be done eating at around 7:00. Were in our busiest time between 5-7, everyone wants those after work appointments! So no taking a break to eat.5
-
Torchy's Tini ... enough said. I do love them and find them hard to pass up.
Went to Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo plus John Waite concert last night. They still have great voices! Really enjoyed John Waiteâs opener as he sang a wide variety of songs.

@ahoy_m8 - I've been looking at both Backroads and On Foot Holidays and really curious about the experience difference especially since one is much more expensive than the other. I have multiple friends that used Backroads and said it was great ... hotels, guides, the small group of people going at their own pace but support along the way, pricing was accurate, extra adventures wine tasting/meals, cooking classes were awesome and included in price. But not sure I want to be in a group ... hence looking at On Foot Holidays. Interesting that On Foot Holidays the pricing wasn't transparent (hmmm was something not included that you expected?) and the issue with setting up hotels. Good to know. Love that they gave you the routes to track and paper instructions "in case".
Thanks for sharing!4 -
Was thinking about this topic when I saw this thread. I have always heard that if you really want to lose weight/maintain health, cut back on alcohol. This discussion is a great motivator and came at just the right time.7

I'd guess the biggest difference is, as you note, being alone or part of a group. Also, I wouldn't assume too much about the price until you spec out exactly what you want (upgrading hotels, extra days, etc.) The transparency issue was only on getting things set up on the front end. There were no surprises after the package was set. I also have a group of friends that do Backroads together annually. My cousin calls it "Bank of Backroads" because whenever they comp you, it's a credit for a future trip. Some people thrive on the social nature of the group trip. Will be interested to hear what kind of trip you put together!4 -
@ahoy_m8 - "Bank of Backroads" LOL well that explains it ... since the ones that I know go on 5-7 trips a year traveling all over the world do at least one Backroads trip each year. But I can't keep up with those Jones.
Thanks for the insight.4 -
Well someone looks very guilty ... missing our steak for dinner this evening. Plan B: Pizza
BTW: Even though he is trying to look sad he was wagging his tail ... happy & very full dog. Now he is sleeping off his dinner.
Meet Monte our standard poodle ... the thief!

@Lilylady3k I am still laughing! Thank you for the uplifting moment in your life5
-
Well I have a small whoopie lol. My fitness pal told me last week I hit the lifetime goal on here and today was my log in day 300...have to celebrate the small stuff7
-
AF today with 1 bottle of "pink grapefruit Perrier"...it's Tuesday and figured to stay AF a bit until Halloween.
I am feeling okay but since my drinking went up the past month, I am waking up at 3 a.m. super wide awake. At least I have a lot of energy...
Jumping over to the travel discussion...what's your travel bucket list look like?
Mine would be: 5+ weeks covering Australia/Tasmania/New Zealand South Island/Thailand/Singapore and do it all during 1 big trip because I detest long haul flights and traveling but it's cheaper and less taxing this way. I have to be retired to take that much time off. I love to design my own trips.
Then I would do another but go to Austria mainly for many hikes but spend some days in Bavaria region of Germany and also make my way to Slovenia and Northern Italian Alps region. I'd do most of it using train. That would be the second "big trip".
Husband will never do a cruise but I am up for it - I'd rather be dancing to 80's music on a ship than strapped in a plane for a day and half with no sleep any day.5 -

Tuesday October 26 - AF - Might have drinks Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, surprise days off coming up starting Thursday after so many split shifts this month. Going to a play with some friends on Friday night (there hadn't been any live theatre since the pandemic began) and we usually have dinner and/or drinks beforehand . They serve wine and beer at the theatre, neither of which I am into.

Welcome! Yes, Iâve found that to be true personally. If you havenât seen the list of resources at the beginning of the thread, there is a ton of good info. Everyone here has different reasons for wanting to cut back, but they are all valid!!!! Weight loss and better health is way up there on the list!3 -

What a beautiful thief, I mean dog! Oooh he is sneaky. He looks like heâs only playing the part of being ashamed. Ten bucks says heâd do it again in a heartbeat!4 -
One glass of wine last night, no real reason for it, but at least that near-empty bottle in the fridge is no longer staring at me. Next planned drinking is Friday night for book club. Now I have to cobble together a Halloween costume.
@globalhiker my bucket list is traveling the country and visiting the national parks in an RV, visiting family in Germany, and sailing down the ICW in a big live aboard sailboat. I guess a sailboat is like a floating RV!6
