WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2022

I'm thinking of all of you who are struggling with health/work/family issues, and holding in my heart those who have had losses and sad anniversaries.
I've had a few issues of my own but right now I'm delighted to be back where I belong, if only temporarily. Husband was to give a lecture in Longyearbyen and I went along for the ride. This is the week when they celebrate the return of the sun (the official date isn't actually until tomorrow). It's a glorious time of year - provided the skies are clear.
The day we arrived they were NOT clear. Our plane had to circle for an hour waiting for the clouds to dissipate enough for us to land. Luckily, there was a brief opening and the pilot immediately slammed the plane to the runway. Otherwise we would have had to fly back to the mainland and try again the next day.
But yesterday the skies were clear. We went for a pleasant walk up the mountainside east of town and I captured these pics.
First, looking north across Adventfjorden to Hjortfjellet and Adventtoppen, two of the mountain profiles that everyone who has lived in Longyearbyen has engraved on their hearts.
Next, looking west down over the center of town. The slats in the foreground are part of the snow fence erected after the avalanche in 2015, when two people were killed. The rock wall below it is a snow barrier that was completed last summer. I haven't seen it before.
Last, a view to the northwest, with the house we lived in for ten years right in the center. The day I took these pictures was the first time in an entire year that I saw the view all the way across Isfjorden, to the mountains on the other side, 50 miles away. That sight hit me right in the solar plexus. I wasn't aware how much I've missed it.
That's enough pictures for now. I'll be back with more later on.
/Penny, inordinately happy to be back at the

Pip-good to see you up and about. Those post surgical strolls are important for our recovery.
Penny-beautiful pictures. I have a much better appreciation of the North Pole after you sharing your life there.
Tracey-glad you got to spend time with your grand. She sounds delightful.
Thunder storms work me early this morning. Spring is indeed on the way. Saturday and Sunday had some teasingly warm weather. We will be in 40s-50s most of the week now, but not bad for March here.
Had quite a bit of inflammation from my work on Saturday-pulling out nails, etc., gets arthritis kicking in. Drank fluids and a couple of cups of ginger/tumeric tea. Fingers don't feel quite like sausages this am. Middle joint on right thumb has popped out quite a bit-it usually goes back down. Strange thing.
Have taken my weekly fosomax-can have coffee in about 15 minutes-off to shower while waiting.
Take care all,

Keep Tracy in your thoughts and if you have any ideas on how she can work from home please let me know.. she spoke with her boss and they want her working 6 days a week and will be having her pay back 25% of her insurance because she will be working part time and she wont be covered by
insurance..
My heart hurts for her ,but there isnt much i can do..5 -
(((PIP)))) I can relate to wanting pictures. You seem like a "bite out of life" sort of person and I think you have everything on your side to heal well.
HEATHER Wow, I don't think I could bear so much drama at this age! I hope she fares better in her next steps and visits. What French film did you watch? Nice about the tai chi men! maybe it was a (men's) class? Very glad your connection is safely out of Ukraine.
Had to skim again today. Off to work and lots of appointments, prep work today.
It's cold and I'm not enjoying it!
Have to skim cause impossible to read all, and tomorrow there will be another 5 pages!
Wishing you all good health.3 -
tracked these past days.
almost zero movement yesterday (3,000 Steps! and nothing else).
not a great day but oh well.
today is full of work etc w appointments outside home from 9am to 8pm...
so just in little steps from here to there I get in quite a few...3700 so far but need to go to X and then to Y and then back home. Teaching is not as active as say waiting tables or building houses, but not like sitting at a desk all day either...
bonne journée !4 -

She only just had the baby, didn't she? Can she take a course in something so that when her mat leave is up, she has the skill set to work at home? Mat leave here is a year, I think, so if it is similar there, she's got time to get, for example, a childcare certificate.
https://www.fairwork.gov.au/leave/maternity-and-parental-leave
I don't think labour laws allow people to work 6 days a week unless they are paid overtime or given time off in lieu. The maximum a person can work is 38 hours (unless overtime/toil)
https://www.fairwork.gov.au/employment-conditions/hours-of-work-breaks-and-rosters/hours-of-work
She should contact the fairwork ombudsman or whatever the department is called there to talk about what she's entitled to.
Wouldn't she have checked into these things before getting pregnant?
As for working from home ... there's childcare. Some here do that.
Or a music teacher.
Or a massage therapist.
For a couple years, I worked for Canada Post "from home". They delivered a stack of fliers to me at home, I collated them and delivered them to people's homes on the weekends.
She could check into election positions - sometimes people are hired to "stuff envelopes" for mailings.
If she's a good website designer, that can be done from home.
I work from home occasionally -- I'm in databases.

Good morning! Happy Monday!
Machka- Love what you are doing with your patio/oasis area!
Tracey- Michaela! What a doll! I need her to come here and help me "broom" every day!
Pip- You look fabulous!
Allie- What a crappy thing for your daughter's employers to spring on her right before she is ready to head back to work! They want her to work 6 days a week and it is still part time? PLUS pay back 25 % of her insurance? Oh no! I would be getting a lawyer on the "pay back" part of their plan. That does NOT sound legal to me. At home jobs. A lot of places are hiring that way. Amazon, medical transcription, Disney vacations, many travel agencies work that way, now. Have her check Indeed.
Heather- Wowsa! Sounds like your friend had a time of it! You must be her "stability" person. Good on you, for the run! I bet that felt good.
Penny- Beautiful pics! I bet it felt good to be back, if only for a little while.

KJ et al - I didn't use to be my friend L's stable person. My relationship with her was equally volatile and intense. Drink was usually involved. My life is totally different now and I am happy to be her friend at arm's length. I would not have her to stay, for example. Drama is not my bag any more. She has a friend with her at the moment.
Penny - Your pics made me feel very nostalgic. Miss Longyearbyen and I miss you.
I'm in a strange twilight world at the moment. Can't go out much because we are isolating before the cruise. Trying to run down food, wash everything, buy online everything we need. Time has stopped.
This morning I was reading through old letters from the man I am writing about. So much that I don't remember, or got confused. In my head it was much less complicated! Made me thoughtful. He was very perceptive about me. Let's just say, I was a very mixed-up kid. I would not say I am wisdom incarnate nowadays, but I have come a long way.
I would like to find out if he has died and when. Most sites charge for the info, or want you to register at the least. I'm not sure why it's so difficult. He would be 82ish now.
Anyway, it's a humbling experience. But, if I'd known better, I'd have done better.

Tracey, I would so LOVE to unplug from the world. Been thinking about that a lot lately. Maybe this summer sometime.

BIG NEWS! I may be going home today. Will have to go on blood thinner shots, then pills, but oh well.17

Did a Cathe Friedrich DVD today then walked on the treadmill a bit. After exercise went to the Dollar Store since I want to try their popcorn. No formal exercise tomorrow since SpaceX is scheduled to launch at 7, then Safelite will be here to replace my windshield at 8, then we’re leaving around 11:30 to meet up with my cousin
Penny – so glad you popped in. Keep posting those pics, they are absolutely wonderful
pip – That’s wonderful! When you get home, take it easy, at least at first. I know that’s going to be hard for you.
Got good news today. Jess will be doing her residency at NCState. That’s the first school she listed as wanting. The bad news is that it’s a 3 year program. Which means she’ll be 40 by the time she’s finished. But she’s achieving her dream!!! I’m so happy for her I can just burst.

So pooped from class yesterday that I slept through the night, 8 straight hours. Usually I sleep 5, then wake 3 then sleep another 2. Go figure.
Lisa what an appropriate poem for Ash Wednesday. LOVED the geek joke.
Michele, thanks. Not even sure I’ll go for my license, just something I’m toying with, to stir up the tapioca between my ears.
Carla 41 years and still getting along, well done!
Rebecca yours to pip. Amen!
Tracey “…not a little girl, I’m an artist” Hoo boy, Your daughter is going to have her hands FULL.
Penny Is there any reason why you and your DH could not return to Longyearbyen permanently? The longing in your voice is palpable.
Allie, maybe its time for Tracy to explore other companies? Good help is hard to find, and it doesn’t sound like her current company is being reasonable (6 days hardly sounds part time to me…)
Machka alas your Australian labor laws are much more compassionate than those here in the US. Most states are “at will” means the companies can do/require whatever they want and the employees choices are, do what the company wants or find another job. Yes, technically, most corporations must pay (or offer inlieu time off) at a rate of time and a half for all hours worked over 40 per week, but I think Tracy is asking to work fewer than 8 hours per day. This also accounts for the change in insurance cost, as she’ll no longer be a full time employee. As for maternity leave, employers have to let employees return to their jobs after up to 12 weeks of absence, but they don’t have to pay them for the time off. Many employers do offer paid time off but this is a benefit entirely the employer’s choice.
Heather “If I’d known better…” reminds me of the saying “Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgement.”
Pip having Yogi’s bear toy for company and comfort made me mist up. Gentle ((hugs)).
Penny wish I’d read your post before writing the above tome to Machka
Katla so very very disappointed about the puppy visit, but your DH’s health comes first. If the breeder can’t understand that…

Allie my daughter is a medical insurance coder. They all generally work from home. It's computer work. It is a 6-9 month school program that can be done on line. After she gets a job there are other certificates that she can get to increase pay and her value as a coder. My daughter's company paid for her to get other certificates. And gave her a couple of nice raises.7

Good morning! We woke up to snow-covered roads today. Crazy weather here in Wisconsin. Over the weekend we had thunderstorms and flooded streets, with all the snow melted and washed away. Today, everything is white again. It is prettier than the muddy streets and brown grass, but I think I'm over the early winter thoughts of "Oh, look how pretty the snow is!". I'll have to get my exercise inside today vs walking outside in order to avoid slipping on ice.
Plans for today are to make a few batches of soup, maybe minestrone and lentil? Also looking for a good recipe for a pasta dish using beans or lentils, without meat. I'm trying to incorporate more fiber and whole foods and less beef. My husband is a meat, potatoes and corn kind of guy...I think my body needs more fresh foods. I got lab results last week (I think?) showing that I tested positive for auto-immune disease and I need to consult with Rheumatologist to narrow down which one. I am hoping that I can control symptoms by eating less inflammatory foods. We'll see. Life is one science experiment after another lately!
Tracey - Michaela is such a doll! I love her "you're not a princess anymore..." comment! LOL She knows how to work her Grammie. I sure miss those days. My youngest granddaughter is now 13 and is on that line teetering between wanting to be a kid and wanting to be an adult.
Penny - I just came back last week and didn't realize you don't live in the North Pole anymore. I always loved seeing your photos and hearing about Iceland, so I'm glad I was here to see more photos. It's just so beautiful. Such a small town surrounded by those mountains. I'll bet it is very peaceful, tucked away from the world like that. I would love the opportunity to shut the world out right now. I hope you are happy wherever it is you've moved. Thanks for sharing.
Pip - You look so good! I hope you get to go home. It's much more comforting to be at home in your happy place surrounded by your loved ones.
Katla - I hope your husband feels better soon. I'm sorry you weren't able to go see the puppies! I'm sure the breeder will understand. How exciting it will be to find your perfect bundle of love.
Tracie in WI3 -
Tough morning. DH is not doing well today. He needs to be able to sit in a chair. We’re working at it. It hurts to see him in pain.
❤️5 -
Katla - sending hugs. Seeing a loved one in pain is much worse than suffering oneself. I hope he gets better soon.
I spent the afternoon trying to trace my old lover. I even enlisted my difficult friend, who is a keen genealogist. No luck. I found some names on LinkedIn and Facebook, perhaps his children, and have sent messages. I really just want to know why he suddenly stopped contact 2004. I sent out a random email and it hasn't been returned yet. Two previous ones were. I know it's weird, but I do want to know what happened to him. I loved him, once.
I was exhausted by all this activity. A Pernod suggested itself. Just the one, thank goodness.
Sending love to Pip, et al.
Julie - The much anticipated film, La Belle Epoque, with the divine Daniel Auteuil, turned out to be a washout. We turned it off after 10 minutes.
Cleaner came today. The company allows us two sessions off with no payment, so that's good. We will use one. She will be back after the cruise.
Seabass and asparagus for dinner with sauce vierge. Loads of calories in the olive oil, but not too much else. I dId fries for DH.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx2 -
I heard from the puppy breeder and am very pleased. The puppies will not be born for months, weeks from then before eyes open, and longer still until they’re ready to go to new homes.
We are happy with this. Right now we have other things to do. DH has health issues to resolve so that he can feel better.

Pip--WOW!! Does look like they got it all without it breaking open and I understand that is a good thing. Prayers for quick healing and feeling so much better.
Allie--There should be a clinic that does sliding scale for pay. Carmine does have a lot going on but has to learn to deal and I agree living on the streets is not the way to go. Tough Love is not easy and we had to use that for our oldest, it was He**, but it had to be done and when he was older he understood. We even had him admitted to a phyic unit for the 3 day eval which helped a lot to understand for all of us.
Kylia--Your road trip this week sounds like a lot of fun and quite the adventure. Pictures Please?
Thanks for posting Joyce's last post as it helped me remember who she was and to see Gloria's and remember her. They were both special ladies and cared about family and us on here. Miss them and LitJrmom- the late in life baby and lenora. Is Lenora the one that lived just next to her son and his family and used the Hottub a lot?
Saturday in the mail I got a summons for jury duty. June 6-Sept 3. Not thrilled but will do my part. Only problem is I call on Friday night to find out about the next week and my schedule is out for 4-8 weeks at a time and someone has to be there if I can't. So talked to my PRN person this morning and they will be on standby if I have to go. Then the middle of June we have plans and paid fees for a Motorcycle rally in Billings MT. So I put that on the sheet and will see what happens.
Machka--Your garden and patio look great and a great place to just relax.
Betsy--Hugs, sometimes the memories are hard and sweet at the same time.
Heather--What a terrible time to relax in. Hope her next visitor does better and she gives up the drinking. Enough already.
Tracey--Glad you had fun at the baby shower and got to spend time with family and friends. Your granddaughter is so cute and helpful.
Annie--Prayers and hugs that the answers will come as needed.
Penny--Good to see you posting. Thanks for sharing the pictures and looking forward to more.
Michele--Great news on Jess and even if she is 40 by the time she is done, she is doing what makes her happy and better now then never.
Katla--Pray DH feels better soon. Sorry you had to post phone meeting the puppies, but when you do it will be less time before you can bring your new furbaby home.
Well it started sleeting and snow on Saturday night and still going. Only about an inch of snow and sounds like it is to keep coming the next couple days. Winter just late. Glad I am working inside and am working acouple hours longer today.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND ,NE4 -
wow- must have been a busy/exciting weekend for all of you. Just gone since Friday evening and have 8 pages to read just to catch up. Looking forward to reading all the posts after I pick up my daycare girl from school. Came home from mom's this morning. Just enough time to unpack. I didn't even make any stops on the way. Need to leave here in 30 min to get Ezie. A few more things in the car to unpack but got all the frozen/refrigerated stuff put away. Need to pack a quick picnic lunch for her-we go to the park right after school Mondays and Tuesdays.
Got a lot of work done in mom's greenhouse with help from my friend and then the second day, her and her husband came out and helped. Mom was busy (or distracted) by other things and didn't plant anything. She did finally come out but ended up weeding underneath the tables in the green house.
Just glad we got a good start on it. Brought in a lot of extra trays that we filled with potting soil so they are ready when she gets the rest of her seeds in( not sure if she actually has ordered them or not-one time she said she did but they hadn't come in and another time she said she hadn't ordered them yet)
Helped at the food program/food bank Saturday morning- up at 3:45AM- love helping with it but hate being up that early.
Ok- Will check in a little later.
Going to enjoy this, my last day in my 50's, and the weather is perfect.

Debbie ~ I am wondering if the garden project has gotten to be too much for your mom! I know you love it, but, it seems like she may have lost heart for it since your Father passed. If so, I hope that she doesn't have to depend on it just for the money it brings in. Please don't take offense. Just a thought on my part.
Allie ~ Fingers crossed that your daughter will be able to find something to do at home. What kind of work does she do for the Vet? I did stay home for 3 mos. after my son was born but without pay. When I came back to my job, the pay was the same but I had been replaced in my position to one I did not like.
Pip ~ Continued wishes for your complete healing.
Got my garbage bill today and it had gone up another $10. $100 in all for 3 mos. And, we forget to put the can out a lot of the time. Everything has gone up and a lot was due to the increase in gas prices.
