Happy Birthday Barbara... hope this is a wonderful year.
Thanks Barbie for the brand new month... Love new beginnings.

DH is set to have a telephone appointment with his doctor this morning. I plan to eavesdrop.
Outside our window we see the river is higher but not worrisome. We enjoy seeing the birds floating or wading in the river looking for food. Outside our downstairs windows we see the hummingbirds visiting our feeders. So far this is a good morning.

At the kids house. Edie and my son are being tested for gluten intolerance. Results due tomorrow. Bea is better without cows milk and fine with goats.
Funny story. My son bought some masonry paint for the garden wall. On getting out of the car he dropped the huge can and it spilled all over the sidewalk. He mopped most of it up , getting it on his coat, and then decided to pressure-wash the rest. As he was doing it the pressure-washer caught fire.
Candidate for Worst Day Ever.
Hope we can get a lift home. Very damp.

Well, my detective work payed off to a point. I found the hospital he was in 30 minutes after he was discharged. Which brought on a whole new set of worries. After finally hearing from him, he is no better. It is what it is.
Happy March everyone! Going to be a busy month for me gastro today, fourth CoVid shot Thursday (also my b-day), gastro for DH next Monday, then our 25th anniversary the 12 th, then DH doc the following week with me the dentist, then last week is DMD bday. Also Lent starts Wednesday. Not sure if there is anything else planned this month. We’ll see when DH colonoscopy is scheduled.
Never a dull moment.

my mother in law's birthday is today, mine is next Tuesday. I do have a friend from elementary school that does share the same birthday and middle name. Another friend in that class is a day older than Sandy and I, another is 4 days older. Pretty crazy when there were only 14 of us in the whole 5th grade at that school(very small country school)- still in touch with both girls, lost touch with the boy.
I wouldn't mind sharing my birthday with my former mother in law. Hers is the 30th.
My son's is the 26th.
Machka- sorry you are going through all that- hot flashes for me hit about 45, lasted through the winter and were done-all was pretty quick, really. Having them in the winter wasn't too bad. Wore layers so I could easily add or take off when needed.
Rita- I am glad you found your son and hope things get better for him and calmer for you.
Hope your dr appt goes well. My birthday is next Tuesday and I start my day off in the dentist chair for a couple fillings and a crown replacement(small filling under the crown so have to remove and replace it)
Heather- I can not imagine how frustrated your son was when all that was over. That is crazy

On Weighing Food:
I have posted this info before, but with the discussion about weighing foods, I will post it again for those who may be interested.
A number of years ago I decided to meticulously weigh all of my food intake, and I was surprised at how much I had underestimated the calories.
The items where I made the most significant errors were the calorie dense items like oil, almond butter, butter, cream, nuts, and salad dressing. I can also see where it would be easy to be off by quite a bit with something like chips.
Concerning packaged foods that have one or two servings, like a frozen dinner or a can of soup, I was surprised to learn that the manufacturer is required to put at least the amount of food into the package that is listed on the label. Thus, it is not unusual for there to be more food in the package than the label says there is. So if a frozen dinner label says one helping is 250 calories, and there is one helping in the package, you would think you were getting 250 calories, but in fact, you will be getting at least 250 calories!
I also discovered that one of my former favorite quick low calorie vegetable/noodle frozen meals looks as if it should be one serving, but is actually two servings! No wonder I thought it was low calorie!
___
Karen in Virginia
thanks for that info- I would have never thought they would actually put more food in a package than was listed(my guess would be less, saving them money)
I was surprised at the servings on one of the premade salad bowls- It is in a small bowl and comes with one tiny fork BUT some say there are two servings. I double check all of that now.
This calorie counting/tracking is relatively new to me. Until I was about 45, I was either within normal range or lower , weight wise. When I got married the first time I was 4'10" and 95 lbs. I did grow a few inches taller to a whole 5' but weight has gone WAY up from there and now at 5' I am at 151. Goal is 124. I got within 5 lbs of it six years ago when I was EXTREMELY motivated(seeing former hubby for the first time in 20 yrs). Need to find my motivation again.3 -
Happy March everybody!
Last night was rough, just thinking of my youngest and bawling in my pillow, (as quiet as possible). I finally unloaded the emotional wave on husband at about 10:30 pm. Cried hard, and then nose stopped working, processing feelings is tiring. Today I feel like I've been run over by a truck. Didn't go to gym, on second cup of coffee. My reason for the outburst last night was because husband received another collection letter from youngest son's phone company, so he wrote a letter to the Command Master Chief, so hopefully son can get a handle of his finances. Thinking the worst, like son being so hurt, embarrassed, that he never speaks to us again. But really, part of being a responsible sailor is to keep your finances in good order, so we are trying hard to not make his financial issues detrimental to his naval career. Hopefully it sparks nothing but good, positive things and helps in the long run.
Thank you Barbie, for starting March off on the right foot. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this group. We need teeshirts or something. Then our pics will be us in them, smiling like a shmansy trendy proper group. Or HATS! 😋😁
Today is fish fillets, nestled in street taco sized flour tortillas, and homemade coleslaw on top of them. Yummy!

Barbara — I envy your walks with your dogs. We miss our old dog, Schooner, like crazy. Waiting for a dog to be born is a challenge. We found a local breeder. There are no puppies available now, but a litter is due the end of March. We’ve been told the puppies may be available in early June. Waiting is hard. 🤞🏻🤞🏻2

Barbara - happy birthday!
Heather - much sympathy for your son, bless his heart.
Rebecca - my husband told me, when John was 15 and Kelsey was 17, that kids allow you to parent them until they don't anymore. Your youngest reminds me of that every time you speak of him. I'm so sorry this is so hard. I hope you continue to find the strength you need to help you know that none of this is in how you raised him.
Later, y'all,
Love, Lisa

Popcorn in the NE--By chance are you from North Loup, NE?
Pip--Sorry to hear about the run around at the ER. Pray this new doctor can get the answers and treatment you need.
Margaret--What you said about using a filter and finding what works for each of us, is just what I needed to hear. Patience and letting go is skills I too need to practice.
Beth--Sending hugs and prayers. Grief has it's own agenda and all we can do is one day, one step at a time.
Rita--I also pray you hear something soon. Our kids have no idea what they put us though and being an adult does not lessen the worry. Glad you found your son, sorry he is not doing better.
Kylia--Good to see you post, been wondering about you. Remember baby steps and it will get better.
Barbara-Very Happy Birthday!!
Barbie--Thanks for getting us started on the new month. Going to be a great month.
Yesterday went to doctor and I have to go back Friday for bone density test and pneumonia shot. They couldn't do them yesterday while I was there as I will not be 65 until tomorrow. He did put me on potassium as mine is to low and been going down last several times I have had blood work done. Also said I am in stage 2 kidney disease and when I asked about that he said, just keep your AC1 under 7 and your blood pressure down. My AC1 was 5.7, but I am sure my blood pressure is up.
Today is DH's birthday and mine is tomorrow. DH plans for us to go out of town for the weekend just to get away and relax. Got us a hotel with a pool so looking forward to that. He also got me an apple watch 7. Been interesting trying to figure it out. Saturday when he gave it to me, we went to DS's that evening and I asked my 14 year old granddaughter for help. She says first thing is the bank is on upside down and backwards. So she fixed that and now learning slowly the rest of it. I do like that it buzzes me every hour to stand up and move around for a minute. Still trying to decide if I like it.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE where it is 73 degrees today and tomorrow and then back in the 30's crazy weather for sure.5 -
Walked home in the rain. Knackered.
Managed to pull together the ragu and spinach with tagliatelle for DH and some parmesan. Unfortunately, I needed a Pernod after all that but still OK for CICO. Phew.
My son was making pancakes for Shrove Tuesday for the kids. With gluten free flour. Apparently, Edie has been much better in the last couple of days without gluten. So we will see. My son is v low carb to lose weight along with his suspected gluten issues. Gets complicated.
I always bring KitKats for the kids as an after school treat. The tiny two finger ones. I have one for my afternoon snack. They are just over 100 calories. Today there were none to be had, so I bought a pack of chunky ones. I had one. Oops. 204 calories. Then found out about Edie 's gluten thing, so she couldn't have one. Luckily I had my Extra Strong Mints with me, which she loves. Max tried extra hard to find us in the park in anticipation of his KitKat. I told him it was cupboard love.
Now to relax .....

Hello! Happy March! Just popping in to say hello and hoping to be able to keep up with you all this month. :flowerforyou:
Today is 40 degrees and sunny in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It puts pep in my step for sure. I am so tired of winter, as I'm sure many of you are also.
I will be 62 this month and am about to file for Social Security. I'm nervous that I will make a mistake. I lost my job of 30 years during the Covid-19 shutdown in 2020. We have been staying afloat since then and it will be nice to have another source of income.
I've decided it is time to stop feeling bad about the loss of my job and use this time to begin some self-care. So, in March my goal is to begin getting some sort of intentional activity in every day, even if it isn't much. I have to start somewhere, right?
Nice to see so many familiar names still here on this thread! I look forward to being more active here and getting to know you all better.

Barbie ... thank you for the new thread!
Barbara ... Happy Birthday!
Lisa ... laughed at your response to the nurse as well as your interpretation ... and your reply to Rebecca regarding children is spot on ... amazing to me how fish who swim in the same pond can turn out so differently ...
Tracie ... nice to see you posting again!
Karen ... many, many good memories of my son ... when I can gather my thoughts into a post instead of an epistle, I will share ...
Rebecca ... I'm familiar with those kind of tears ... so sorry.
Rita ... exchanging one worry for another is hard. Looks like you have a busy month ahead. Hugs.
Heather ... your son's afternoon is another example of "if you didn't have bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all!"
I saw my orthopedic doctor today... six months since I broke my tibia plateau. The bone has healed (stronger than before the break they say...thought that was an old wive's tale, but it's true), but I'm still very weak. Forced immobility is NOT good. Asked this doctor to take over the management of my two arthritic knees that are slip-sliding into knee replacements. He was agreeable to that. More therapy for the time being and then we'll see what happens.
Came into March one pound lighter than February and given the stress levels present in my life at this time, that is a win! Still, I need to do better and really start focusing on healthier eating that results in weight loss. So March goals will be to lose one pound a week instead of one pound a month. Sheesh.
I didn't sleep last night and that is not my normal MO... hoping for sound sleep tonight.

Heather — My husband has been on a gluten-free diet for several years. He can’t digest wheat. We buy gluten free bread and rolls for him. We buy several gluten free noodles, too. I like most of those things but also like sourdough wheat bread so I get some for me. 😊0

I've been dealing with hot flashes and night sweats for at least a decade now.
I have better times ... then worse times.
Cannot use HRT.
I hit the 12 months with no periods last October and kind of hoped the perimenopause symptoms would disappear but apparently they very gradually ease off.

OMG that sounds horrible. Big paint can spilling I've experienced...but the cleaner catching on fire. wow.
By what methods are Edie and your son being tested for Gluten intolerance. I have without a doubt gluten intolerance (tried many times knowingly and unknowingly to eat gluten- it gives me radical runs!) but I had anti gliadine test which didn't pick it up. Some say I'd have to eat gluten for 6 months to get it to show up. (similar for colonoscopy in which G intolerance can show up as flattened villi in intestines). I feel severely ill if I eat much gluten so there is no way I'm going through that for 6 months to get a scientific positive...
but maybe there are other tests now. that was about 12 years ago, and different countries may have different approaches...
I have not a shadow of a doubt of my own intolerance (alas!) but it can in some circumstances be useful to have scientific confirmation for validation from others medical community or others... since GF is also a trend, many are wary of GF diets (think it can be capricious, which it can)... I tend not to explain symptoms unless people ask which they sometimes do... in which case I might explain to friends. "everything just goes right through me"...2 -
Barbie: Thanks, our fearless leader, for keeping us on the S&S 😝
Kim:Re protein: I had difficulty meeting my protein goals. I find adding lentils/quinoa etc to soups increases my totals. Also I keep frozen cooked prawns in the freezer. They are surprising high in protein for a low calorie count, and no fat content.
I have skimmed through both end of Feb and beginning of Mar but using my phone is a pain. My old iPad is having problems with some apps. Time I replaced it, I think.

Well I chatted through my finances with an old friend and decided I don't have to go back to work just yet. So that's over for now.
But meanwhile I left my mom with leftovers to microwave for dinner, and she couldn't get through it without me. Part of the problem is she insists on a big meal for my father. So it's good to realize that without having a scare.
Now I need to gather my energy for dumbbells.
Pip good luck with your appointment tomorrow. Hope the answers are clear and actionable.
