drkatiebug wrote: »Well, I'm bummed. I had to fire my house cleaner today. She has had trouble scheduling us in for our regular every two week Monday cleaning for a while. Today she said she'd be here at 2:00. Dave and I made plans to go do errands while she was here, but we couldn't leave until she got here. When she didn't show by 3:30, he was livid and left to do the majority of the errands by himself. the one thing we needed to do together did not happen and now probably won't. I am most upset about that. She finally texted at 4:30 to say she wasn't going to make it today. I wrote a very nice text back, asking if she had another day that was more open that we could move to so that our time would be consistent or did we need to look for another cleaner. I explained that we had to cancel our plans and that Dave gets very anxious when she doesn't show when she is supposed to. She said it would probably be best if we found somebody else. I have reached out to two cleaners for quotes. I know it is going to be more, but if they are consistent, it will be worth it.
I find it incredibly difficult to find a good house cleaner. I had to fire one because she just could not keep her hands/dust rag off the things I told her to leave alone (the TV that cannot have any sort of product on it) and she was constantly on the phone. That bugged me. I fired others because they only wanted cah and I got tired of running to the ATM all the time. I gave up because I don't really want anyone in the house when I'm trying to work and they never seem to do a good enough job to justify the money.

Tina, I might actually know what this is!
On the back of the calf, there is a muscle with a long thin tendon called the plantaris:
In humans, it's considered to be a rudimentary muscle. It's more important to emus and ostriches.
Anyway, when it ruptures, most commonly when a person is running or walking rapidly uphill, or dorsiflexing their foot (stretching the tendon), it can snap like an overstretched rubber band. When that happens, it feels as though the calf was smacked by something; often people think a ball hit the calf and look around to see what hit them!
Of course the MRI may show something else, but your description is classic for plantaris tendon rupture.

Karen-Thank you for that! Yes, I think that's it too. I also think the foot issue might be multiple issues. The odd one is that when I dorsiflex my foot, there is a sharp, burning pain in the heel, exactly where that tendon attaches to the bottom of the foot. It feels like someone is stabbing me with a knitting needle.
It's just annoying because I am limited in my activities right now. It's killing my ability to lose the weight I need to lose in order to avoid buying new clothes.

Welcome Galeayne and Shelle135! keep coming back! We all can help in some way. For me, I lost 60 pounds at age 64 by changing my diet to moderately low carb 10-20% of calories) the rest of my calories come from ‘good fats’ and proteins. As for exercise, I live in a state park so do a lot of walking. That’s all I’ve done and can keep my weight where I want with little to no effort now. At first I didn’t track calories at all, but when I hit a plateau l, at my lower weight, I then needed to watch calories, but I’m not hungry at all with this way of eating. I don’t know, might work for you two too! 😃

A Very Happy Anniversary to Machka and her husband. :flowerforyou:
My chat with L has been put back a bit, so I will be doing that soon. In the meantime, I completed today's task of emailing two radio programmes about my books. Small steps. I'm going to write a newspaper article next. I know if I don't try, I will be unhappy with myself.
Bought a crisp white shirt from Amazon, to wear as a cover up on hot days. It needs an iron. Haven't ironed in years! I could just leave it, but it would look nicer ironed.
Hello to the new people. As Lisa said, a healthy lifestyle is worth changing your life for. Sometimes it's little changes, like new micro habits, and sometimes it's something more drastic, like changing your friends. The good thing is, we can do it, if we want to. One foot in front of the other. Baby steps. Listening to our instincts. Saying no to some old things and YES to some new things. Trusting our feelings.
As my mother would say, "And here endeth the lesson."

Happy Anniversary, Machka! Those are great photos. What a gorgeous place.
Welcome everyone newbies and returners.
Worked my fingers to the nubs yesterday. So much to do to get ready for the new school year and we still don't know when they're going to let us into the building. Such fun. Ah well... I can work from anywhere, as they well know, but won't let me!
Chat soon. Carla, in MN2 -

Did my dumbbells last night! Yay!

AthleteLori...very sad you lost the love of your life to melanoma...my father passed from the same diagnosis.
Galrayne...I hope chemo goes well for you. I admit to having Kybella treatments to my neck for my son's wedding. My budget did not allow for liposuction. The results were fair..not great. Going forward I plan to stay toned as best I can and always wear a nice lip stick and earrings. They are in my budget. You can go a long way with earrings and lip stick!
SophieRosieMom...my sympathy on the passing of your husband. Hospice has little to offer us at this time. Many ALS patients spend savings on help and we are doing the same. It is less expensive than a nursing home would be. I think any time after Xmas his breathing may deterorate. He is on 24 hour bipap already. I have booked a beach writing retreat for October 2023. IT will be interesting to see if I cancel because I am still caregiving.3 -
The weather is cooler and I did walk at my favorite pond this morning. Plan to do an exercise video this afternoon.2

Happy anniversary Machka. Yesterday would have been our 53rd anniversary had my husband lived. I have absolutely no plans to date or find someone else. I do however live with my DD so don't have a problem with loneliness.
I would like to get started going to the symphony again this fall and would like to find someone to go with me. My DD is not into classical music. I think maybe one of the ladies at church may be interested. Otherwise I will just go by myself.
PT is going well, the ankle is getting stronger. We are starting to work more on balance now. After 2 more weeks I will cut back to once a week and continue for another 4.
Welcome to the newbies.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA5 -
Katla--Sounds like thing are going well with DH and his therapy. I do hope you are doing something just for yourself also.
Michele--Excited for you to be able to see PJ next week.
Welcome Nikki--This is a great place for friendship, support and advice. These ladies are my lifeline. Come often and get to know us and for us to know you. Sounds like you have a lot going on health wise and remember One Day at a Time, and nothing wrong with baby steps.
Machka--My regular schedule is 4- 8 hours shifts and one 9 hour shift a week. But right now I am training a new person and have one out of medical leave from having surgery. So I am working 2-3 12 hours shifts and 3 10 hour shifts a week. We are a 24/7 department and since I am the supervisor I have to fill in. I am lucky that a couple of my staff are also working extra, but the most falls on me. Next week we should be back to full staff and my hours cut down. I sure hope so as this is getting to be way to much and since it is the end of and start of our new fiscal year a lot of reports and evaluations have to be done also. I am also 65 and looking at retirement next year in the Fall. Happy Anniversary.
Heather--Interesting garden room. Sure nothing to look at.
Welcome Shelle135-- I also have about 150 more I would love to lose. Baby steps and don't give up is the name of the game. We can do this and keep coming back this is a great group of ladies.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE2 -
We are having an interesting day. DH had a physical therapist appointment. It was good, but he is now very tired and resting.
The interesting part of the story is that the fire alarm system malfunctioned. They seem to have solved the problem.
Never a dull moment . . .2 -
Welcome Shelle in MD ( @Shelle68 ) and Nikki in Dallas ( @Galrayne )! I just joined this group too. You both have so much going on. I hope you get the support you need.
Happy Anniversary Machka!
My rescheduled appointment with my doctor is Monday afternoon. I'm actually looking forward to it. I am so motivated lately to take steps toward a healthier life. I have also been more disciplined when my motivation is low.
I hope everyone is finding something good about today.

Afternoon ladies
Well im going to go pick up Alfie and drop him off at Tom and Elena's for overnight. Once a mom always a mom .. will pick up my Cpap to bring over here..
I didn't get alot of sleep last night and will probably not get alot the next couple nights either.3 -
Welcome ... to the new ladies! You have found a wonderfully supportive group.
There were so many things I wanted to comment on, but I'm reading without the benefit of writing things down so I've forgotten most of it.
Remarrying ... my husband is healthy, but I've thought about this before. I would not be inclined to remarry. I love my husband and will do anything for him ... just as he has for me ... but I've been a caregiver most of my life and wouldn't have the same "history" to be interested in doing it again for someone new.
Machka ... Happy Anniversary!
Katla ... I am so happy to hear that your husband is benefitting from the move and the new medical care. You sound happy as well.
Vicki ... anything concerning the heart is always so scary. Praying that all of your tests reveal nothing that you can't handle.
Heather ... Congratulations on the book!
My mom had surgery to repair her hip and wrist last Friday morning and is still in the hospital waiting for insurance to approve the skilled nursing facility. She is struggling. This fall has been considerably harder on her than the one in February. Her spirit is low and she has very poor appetite. Not sure how much she wants to fight. Unfortunately, she will be rehabbing out of state as her surgeon is reluctant to transfer her care to another state. He would prefer she stabilize and reassess in 4-6 weeks. Given her current condition, I understand his reasoning, but not having anyone nearby on a regular basis is going to be very difficult for her. I am closing out her assisted living apartment and moving everything into storage near me while I research her insurance and what facilities are going to be best moving forward. Working non-stop on paperwork and details. Getting a crash course in Medicare!
Losing weight, but that's not really an accomplishment when it's due to stress and grief.

What changed my life for the better was getting clear about what was most important in my life and putting my energy into those things. What's important to me may not be what's important to you and vice versa.
It wasn't until I turned 62 when my husband started a strict eating plan for his health that I decided that being healthy would be number one in my life.. I've made lots of changes on that front such as giving up fancy cooking, baking, and other forms of social and recreational eating. I seek every opportunity to be active.
When a friend's husband died, I realized that my husband's health could lead to an early death for him and I wanted to make the most of the time I had left with him. I choose being with him over lots of other choices.
Allie LOL, when you said that grandma would come stay with Tracy and Miles while Kyle and Carmine were away, I thought it seemed like time for you to have a break while someone else played caregiver, then I realized that when you said "grandma" you were talking about yourself

Beth, It is amazing to me just how complex Medicare and Social Security are. You are an incredibly capable human being and I have a feeling from past happenings that you shine when the pressure is on, but it has to be taking its toll. Sending pocket angels and good thoughts.
Vicki, What on earth are they going to do without you when you retire? My goodness, girl, they will have to hire 2 people to replace you.

Downsizing update:
We are plugging along.
I almost have the attic emptied. I didn't think it possible, but 5-10 boxes a day adds up after awhile.
Next week "Class or Trash" is coming to take about half of our furniture away. Then I'll have more room to maneuver. We will donate more furniture to Habitat for Humanity or give to Buy Nothing group members.
It's amazing what people want! I have given away a lot of good stuff, but also things like plastic plant pots, recyclable containers repurposed for compost scraps, baby food jars, egg cartons, jar lids.
I gave away all but a very few plants and all my teak deck furniture.
I found a Buy Nothing member with an on-line book store who is thrilled to take any & all books/DVDs.
I have already mentioned Thrifty Quaker and Diversity Thrift, and I found a consignment shop for the antique-y things that have enough value to bother with it. (It's really more fun to give things away to my
Buy Nothing friends than to make a few dollars but not know who ended up with my treasures).
It's harder to convince my spouse to part with things. I am realizing that she has hoarding tendencies. Because she is such a generous person, I really hadn't figured that out until now. Her son, with whom I am close, recently volunteered that she has hoarding tendencies.
We have 25 of those realistic-looking battery operated pillar candles! 25!!! It's too many for this house, much less an apartment with no fireplace mantles, no dining room or DR table, and only 2 bedrooms! I refuse to store items like that. We agreed weeks ago that we will take nothing to the new apartment that does not have a place or a purpose. I figure there is a place on a display shelf for a grouping of 3 of the candles. Storing the other 22 is ridiculous. This is but one example of what I am dealing with. She wants to keep everything that we "might" need someday. Ugh!!! Tearing my hair out.
At least I can get rid of my stuff. Once I experienced the joy of giving treasures away it became relatively easy to part with the things I love but no longer have a use for. Or the things that my mother loved that I can now part with free of guilt & sadness.
