It’s been really busy around here so I am posting 2 runs. Both were recovery/easy miles. Yesterday’s felt harder after that workout on Wednesday but the recovery miles did their job and my legs felt a lot better this morning. Like @Scott6255 I am missing the brief cool weather we had earlier this week and reminding myself that not that long ago I would have KILLED for some 60’s in the mornings!!5 -
@AlphaHowls Have a great race and enjoy those pancakes. Sounds like they are good at sticking to a theme. Love it!polskagirl01 wrote: »Weather makes a big difference when it comes to pace. If you were actively trying to slow down, maybe you were right on pace for those particular conditions?
These paces are based on my HM race pace from the Hanson’s pace conversion charts. I definitely overran them. The cooler weather does make it feel easier and it makes it easy for the pace to get away from me. The goal of these marathon tempo runs is to learn what this pace feels like. So far, I’m doing a pretty bad job of it but I have one of these workouts every week, so plenty of chances to get it right. I find myself edging down to HM pace but I guess that makes sense. Most of the training I have done has been for the HM, so those are targets my body knows. This slightly slower pace is not one I have hit regularly for a long time now.
@quilteryoyo Leaf clearing definitely counts as a workout. It is hard work!
Way to go @tarun_yadavA. You earned some downtime for sure. Enjoy your trip!3 -
@quilteryoyo glad to see you back. You've been busy! Raking and clearing leaves from the roof is hard work!
@martaindale you are doing great with your marathon training!
15.15 miles this morning. Well that could have gone better. Planned on 16-18, and was feeling really good until about mile 12. But I had dropped a Gel at some point before mile 5 when I was going to take the first one and discovered it wasn't there. So I had to ration the one I had and took half at mile 8. But that was too late, and after mile 11 I was feeling really zapped. Took Walk breaks every mile after that, but just had to give up a little after 15.
Oh, and almost got hit by a car. I was almost across an apartment driveway when this car was coming out and it didn't even slow down. I had to bang on his hood before he saw me, or he would have kept going. On his @#&! phone! 🤬

@Scott6255 Rough run this morning! Proud of you for getting as much done as you did being underfueled and I’m glad you didn’t get hit by a car. I had a similar car run-in yesterday morning. Didn’t quite hit me me but got close enough that I was preparing to hop/fall on the hood to save my legs just as he saw me. He looked very as he realized how close he came to hitting someone and I let a couple of expletives fly. He was watching the traffic at the all way stop and did not even register the pedestrians. When I looked at my HR data after that run, you could tell exactly when it happened as my HR spiked into zone 5!5
-
Sometimes it's very difficult at a 4 way stop to SEE the pedestrians if they are in that place where the windshield/side window have a pillar in the car. I almost hit a runner there also because she was right in the blind spot and I was stopped. Luckily I saw her last minute in my windshield and did not pull into her. When I am running I always assume that the cars are going to hit me esp if I cannot make eye contact. I have been grazed by a truck in a school crosswalk because I did not think he was going to turn left INTO me. Several years ago. I literally DOVE forward and only had a small glancing blow from his left qtr pnl. He did not even stop. My hands were the worst with road rash.
Anyway, looking forward to race reports and I don't know HOW you can do such long runs. I was literally all out after 10 miles last weekend.4 -

Not quite the 10k I had in mind, but a nice, if somewhat chaotic 8k. Started run, realized I'd not started my sports watch. Went back to start. Started again, realized external HR sensor was for some odd reason off, went back to start again, and yet another start. HR was very low, but I ran out of energy in my legs at the usual spot. Managed to squeeze another 8 minutes out by using the Saru method of moving. Google Discovery Saru walk Basically, when I walk (or run) like that I move my legs by using my upper body muscles. No idea why and how, but it works Probably looks totally ridiculous as well.5 -

Big jump in distance on the long run this week and a new distance PR for me! This was also the biggest volume week I think I have ever done, clocking in at 48.6 miles. I feel surprisingly good.
I went to the Spring Creek trail today. It is perfect for a long run. Got there a little after 7am to take advantage of the cooler morning temps. It's such a pretty place to run, so peaceful. Tried out another of the Muir gels. These are a winner and will be in the mix for my fueling plan. This run went really well. Started out a little quickly because there was a guy right behind me and I was subconsciously keeping up with him. After a couple of miles I realized I was going too fast so backed off, he passed, and we got enough distance between us that I could settle into a more sustainable pace. Aside from a couple bathroom breaks I didn't need to stop or walk and even clocked 2 of my quicker miles at the very end. This was a big confidence booster.4 -
@yirara The little video clip I found of the Saru walk was pretty funny! I guess, if it works, it works!!1

Felt groovy, felt awesome, pushed myself and when I finished, I kept going, back to get A that I had left behind.
Thought of MFP running group, felt like I was being cheered on. I had a great time!

Yeah, I know. I realized the full potential last winter when I did a longer hike and ran out of energy some 2km before end - at a small hill. It got me up2 -

You were channeling @PastorVincent going back for his wife.
Super job on your race!8 -
Nice running @martaindale ! I have never been good at pacing myself. Of course, I probably don't really need to since I always take walk breaks. I would need to if I ran continually, for sure. Glad you weren't hit by the car!! Great run today and congrats on your distance PR!
@Scott6255 Sorry you had to give up on your run, but 15 miles is nothing to sneeze at. Also VERY glad you didn't get hit by the car. People!
@yirara Sorry you didn't make the 10K, but sounds like you did great getting the 8K in. It's frustrating when getting started is so hard.
@AlphaHowls Congrats to you and A&E for your awesome runs! I love the shirt that you ran in! Also love the pancakes on the sleeves of the race shirt. So cool. Sounds like a great race and even more so because you had fun doing it.

I wasn't feeling the best today, probably from leaf dust and mold. I did clean house and then worked in the leaves another 1h45m. I got them all blown off of the driveway so that I can now see where I am going. LOL They were pretty deep. When finishing up the leaves, something happened to my little toe on my left foot. It just started hurting where it attached to the foot with every step. I was limping back up the hill to the house. I rested a few minutes and then went out to see if I could at least walk a mile. It hurt a little, but mostly when I put pressure on the outside of that foot, so I walked 2.00 miles in 30:34 minutes. Hopefully it was some freak thing and will be fine tomorrow.3 -
Running Partner E had taken another photo. She just sent to me.
This was just before race time and I had met this gut with phenomenal legs. We invited him to photo bomb!

@AlphaHowls congratulations! What an awesome race and finish for all of you. I had NO trouble picking you out because well those LEGS.... WOWSWER you might have liked that guys runner legs but I can tell yours are nothing to sneeze at. Well done and LOVELY report and photos.3

Yay, got it with a few hours to spare.
Being fairly sedentary and running 4-5x/week this was somewhat tough 😬🙈6 -

100.27/100 miles completed for October
I ran 11 miles today. It was a pretty good run. It was warmer than it has been at 67°F at the start and 72°F at the end but the wind kept it from being too hot. But wind is not really my favorite and so I was pretty slow. It was already windy starting out at around 16 mph and by the end the wind had picked up to around 22 mph so I was definitely ready to go inside.
I didn't see any critters this time. I did re-route once because I saw a dog out down the street. And my neighbor called me because she had a snake in her kitchen sink and she wanted my husband to come get it. But by the time I got home they had already removed the snake.
This run puts me at 100 miles for the month which was my goal, so it looks like I will go a little over this month.
@alphahowls Love the race photos. Congrats on your placement and great job to A & E as well. I love how you went back for your friend after you finished. And I love the race shirt too.
@yirara Congrats on getting the Garmin Pink October badge.
@scott6255 and @Martindale I'm glad neither one of you were hit by the cars.
@quilteryoyo I hope the toe is feeling better today.

SummerSkier wrote: »@eleanorhawkins tap tap tap... waiting on the race report!!!
@SummerSkier lol, I am so exhausted, got home, soaked in the bath, had dinner and off to bed. Too tired to think about a report, so footnotes... it was awesome but tough AF. It was hotter than I expected and the hills were steeper and more technical than I expected, gave me some nasty cramps. The flies were horrible. I need to learn to read elevation profiles better and remember than gradient and how technical they are makes a BIG difference. The last couple of miles were saved by an antiinflamatory spray a woman at the last aid station doused my legs in and by counting my steps and making myself run 100, walk 50. I caught and passed the woman I was upset didn't train with me before the half way mark, and finished 10 minutes before her (ha!) I finished and was happy with my time (5 hr 18) considering after my health issues I was only aiming to finish before cutoff (6 hr 30). I was 7th (and last) to finish in my age group, the 12th of 15 women finishers (23 of us started) and overall position was 115th of 147 finishers. So could have been better but could have been a lot worse. I remember thinking at one point that it was the hardest thing I'd ever done, including childbirth. Could have done with an epidural around km 23 LOL. The route was wonderful except the last hill which was unexpected and brutal, especially the very steep, loose sand descent. There is no way I could have done another 7km at the end to make a full marathon. I still hope to do the marathon I have been eyeing up in April, but that has less than half the elevation of today's race. I'll post photos of all the awesome goodies and stuff tomorrow. Now...sleep (please, God!)9 -
Wow @eleanorhawkins that sounds like a brutal race. Congratulations on finishing and being much faster than you expected! You are one tough lady 🙂
I got in 5 miles of treadmill recovery running done today. It didn't feel as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Mom and I went to early church today and then she wanted to do some shopping and eat lunch out, so we had Mexican. I know, it's a lot of calories and salty, but oh so good. I went to bed late last night, so didn't get a lot of sleep. When I got home, I decided to relax and nap for a while. I did nap some, maybe 30 min total, but sat and played on my phone and watched TV for about 2.5 hours.
I got interested in a movie that I thought went off at 4:30, but nooooo, it was 5:30. I wanted to run outside, since it was 72°F and sunny today, but I really wanted to see how the movie turned out. I knew 5:30 would be too late to start....sooooooooooo, I went down and exercised on the treadmill until the movie went off and then finished outside with driveway laps.
I was very proud of myself and may have found my sweet spot when it comes to a run/walk time for now. I wanted it to be easy, because I really wanted a long run today. On the treadmill, I did a 3/2 min run/walk at 4.5/3.8 mph. After doing a 0.35 mile warm up walk, I ran/walked 2.5 miles in 35:33 minutes. My avg HR was 127, with a max of 141 bpm. Then I went outside and decided to try doing the run/walk 3/2 minutes and run the hills if they fell during the 3 minutes. Of course, they did all but the first interval. LOL Anyway, I was happy because I just kept going and ran/walked 3.5 miles in 47:05 minutes for a 13:27 min/mile average pace. My HR was higher, with an average of 146 and max of 164 bpm. I had enough left that I ran the last 0.2 mile at a 9:20 min/mile pace. So, overall, I ran/walked 6.00 miles in 1:22:38 minutes - avg pace of 13:46 min/mile. My cool down walk was 0.65 miles for a total walk of 1.00 mile. Total was 7.00 miles in 1:38:14 minutes. Today, I could have done the 10 mile race, I think. I still have a month to get ready for it. If I can find time to run, I'm beginning to think I'll be okay instead of panicking that I'll be a DNF.6 -
@AlphaHowls Great picture with the guy. You all look like you are ready for a good run, and you did.
Congrats on earning your badge @yirara ! That's awesome.
Great run @kgirlhart . I hate running when the wind is that strong too. Just getting in 11 miles is a feat, regardless of the pace. And thanks. My toe didn't bother me at all today. Who knows what it was doing yesterday. Maybe telling me I needed to rest it a bit.
Congratulations @eleanorhawkins ! You did great beating your goal by over an hour and beating your friend who wouldn't train with you by 10 min. LOVE it! Laughed at needing the epidural. Sounds brutal, so just finishing was a feat. You should be proud of yourself. I hope you went straight to sleep and feel refreshed in the morning.
Great recovery run @Scott6255 .6 -
Great job to everyone who raced this weekend! Thank you for sharing your reports and letting us be a little part of it!
I was away for the weekend - church retreat. We arrived early, so I had time to go up to "3 Mounds" peak by myself. Basically 3 rocks at the top of a mountain, with a clear view to one of "my" other mountains. I took it slow and took breaks going up, watched my HR and breathing, and sat on one of the 3 rocks. Then I started wondering, since the plaques on the rocks were missing, if I was sitting on someone's grave... looked it up later, and fortunately they're just marking the 3 town/territories whose borders meet right there. Did some jogging on the way back and had plenty of time before supper, then time in the outdoor hot tub/sauna, followed by cake & snacks.
Saturday morning everyone bailed on us, so my husband, daughter and I went and jumped in the river ourselves. Lovely.
Saturday was mostly group fun time. Most people wanted to go to the forest animal park, but hiking was also an option, I suggested a route and 2 young ladies joined me. The pace was perfect, and even a little rain didn't bother us. We went up a mountain whose name means "big cone", and the name is fitting when you see it from afar. I had mapped out the most direct route up, so it was steep, but very satisfying to get to the lodge at the top and have the donuts and chocolates their grandma packed for us. Headed back and took it easy for the rest of the weekend. Definitely worth the current tiredness.
"Big cone" as viewed from "little cone"
Sunday we packed up, attended a local church (it was funny when they were introducing visitors, asking if anyone had greetings from other churches, and our whole group stood up 😆), then went a little further to a restaurant with a view before heading back home.7 -
Thanks, everyone!
I got some sleep and feel more or less human (though it took 3 mugs of coffee!). Legs are sore, mainly quads, but there is no alarming pain so far. I had a little stretch & foam roll, will do 'yoga for tired legs' this afternoon, then walk or bike for a bit tomorrow and see how things go. Not intending to run this week though, and I have a slot booked with evil physio for Friday. Post-race blues are starting to kick in (combined with marital issues yet again, argh!) but I'm volunteering at our local HM with a few other people from our club on Sunday so hopefully that will perk me up.
Garmeen II made me laugh out loud this morning. She told me I didn't sleep well because of my intense physical activity yesterday and ordered me to avoid intense physical activity in the future. I don't think she read her own product description, as she's meant to be for endurance runners!
I think I mentioned that I signed up for yesterday's race mainly because of how awesome the organisers were? We got a great goody bag, then the finishers got a medal and jacket. Pics in spoiler. There were 6 aid stations with drinks, cake, fruit, candy and nuts, with music and stuff at the one on the way up to the 'castle' (ugly square tower if you ask me, but awesome views and the story is that it was the site of an important battle in 1126), then at the end you rang the bell over the finish line, the medal, then water, fruit and finisher jacket, then they were handing out burgers (there's a McDonalds round the corner) and plates of paella. My husband, who came with me in the end, took care of both of those because I'm vegetarian and wasn't feeling hungry enough at that point to pick the meat out. He also took care of the two donuts that were also in the goodie bag but aren't in the photo, and a couple of little bottles of olive oil (ditto) which he had on his toast this morning.
Oh, they also hid two cute little amigurumi goats on the courses for people to find (and whoever did got to keep them and were given a pair of sunglasses), and they had gift bags from a local winery and a sports nutrition shop which were allotted at random to positions in the general results, as well as legs of ham for the winners!
I am a little disappointed because when I crossed the line and rang the bell, they were in the middle of the trophy giving ceremony for the shorter race, so the photographer was busy there, meaning there is no picture of me and bell. I spent a lot of those nasty long hot training runs in August and September thinking about ringing that bell. Oh well, maybe someone else got one and has yet to upload. I usually look horrific in race photos, anyway.8 -
@eleanorhawkins that IS a great race packet!
I'm a little mad that your husband ate a bunch of your treats, but as long as you were ok with it, I'll give him a pass 😁4 -
awesome reports this morning @polskagirl01 and @eleanorhawkins WOW.... those photos are great. So fun to read this morning.0
-
@polskagirl01 lol no, I told him he could eat the stuff (though with hindsight if I'd known he was going to start acting like a jerk again later on I would have rammed them down his throat!)3

10/2 – 7.07 miles
10/3 – 5.01 miles
10/5 – 5.6 miles
10/16 – 5.4 miles
10/17 – 5.56 miles
10/19 – 5.04 miles
10/21 – 5.01 miles
10/24 – 5.28 miles
Total – 43.97 miles
I ate way too much junk this weekend but we had a good time in Asheville, NC. I got home mid-afternoon on Sunday. It was sunny and 70F. I should have gone out for at least a walk if not run, but instead I placed a lounge chair in the sun and took a nap! I did feel pretty good for my run this morning so all was not lost.
@AlphaHowls – Great job on the pancake half! That is an awesome race pace! Love the photos, especially the smiles with the guy with the “phenomenal legs”!
Great job on those 15-milers @martaindale and @Scott6255. Curious about your fueling plans. As a general rule, do most people fuel every 5 miles? I know it can be more complicated than that factoring in liquid hydration and calories per hour.
The near-misses is a good reminder to all of us that even though we may have the right of way, cars are bigger and can do a lot of damage. One of my running friends always chooses to run in the road vs. the sidewalk. She thinks since she has a headlamp on that they will see her and move over. It doesn’t always happen that way and she ends up jumping up onto the grass but she keeps running in the grass. My fear (and I told her so this morning) is that she will step into a hole (keep in mind it’s still dark out when we run in the am) and fall out onto the road and in front of said car.
Sounds like your toe got ok @quilteryoyo – great job on the 6 miles yesterday and there is no way you will be a DNFer at your race. As active as you are with running and walking and all of life’s other activities, you will be fine.
Nice Garmin badge @yirara!
Congrats on already making goal this month @kgirlhart! Nice long run yesterday!
@eleanorhawkins – You did fabulous! Very impressive to note that 8 of the women were not even able to finish. Epidurals at aid stations….the next big thing?? Lol! I’ve never heard of spraying an anti-inflammatory spray on the legs while running. Did it tingle? Great medal photo! Sounds to me like the husband should be quite happy and supportive of your running considering all the goodies he got from it. Plus a happy wife = a happy life!
That’s great that you were able to make time to get outside at your retreat @polskagirl01. I’m sure you were quite an inspiration to those young ladies.
