I had never had mango until I moved here. They are very popular with the Mexican and Filipino people which we have a lot. We have large grocery stores for each(multiple Filipino grocery stores). I watch the ads for the Mexican store and stock up on mango when they are on sale. They have the small ones 3 for $1 and the large ones 2/$1 at least once a month. During the summer, the little ones are on sale more often. Last year I bought a dozen at a time. Sliced then dehydrated them. I pick out a range of ripeness if I am getting them just to eat.
I have started buying papaya there when it is on sale. .80 a pound and it is something different and lower in calories. Not my favorite but like it better than I used to. I pick one up along with the other fruit/veggies from that store when I am going to mom's. We like the papaya and her room mate hates it so a bit more of a reason to make sure I take one up.
Avocado are the same thing- great sale price at that one store often. Put them in the fridge so they ripen slower. I like the small size- better portion control for me and 3/$1 on them too.2 -
Walked the wetlands yesterday before getting Ezie from school- perfect weather and took the new side trail. Walked with my friend at the park last night. It seemed the more I walked, the longer I wanted to keep walking. Finished the day with just over 25,000 steps/12 miles done.
I did eat more than usual with almost 1200 calories, including wheat bread and brown rice.
Need to get a little breakfast now. that is the biggest change I need to make.
No clue what we are doing today- dh is at his mom's. Woke us up early to go over there. I will be so glad when she can do her own breakfasts so I can sleep in a little on my day off

I remember, when I was at university in the late 60s, walking in to a greengrocers shop and my nose being overwhelmed by the scent of mangoes. This was in Bristol.
I do love them, but you have to catch them at the perfect degree of ripeness.
Beginning to improve. DH too. My back is more flexible and the tinnitus is less. I feel lighter and less dissociated. Just produced meatballs in tomato sauce with asparagus. I had riced cauliflower with mine. Lovely. Nothing wrong with my appetite.
Still watching easy TV and light reading. Magazines. Podcasts from my favourite people. Slept all morning. Then rang G. I haven't done any languages since we got back. Can't concentrate.
Hoping for more improvement tomorrow.
Margaret - So sorry for all your stress. I don't drive at all, and haven't for four years. In fact, I rarely get in a car at all. Just to get to the ship! I don't go any distance with DH driving. Too stressful. The car company picks up our car for service. And brings it back. I hope you can get the furnace fixed before too long. What a pain! I so hate my appliances going wrong!

Just checking in. I am something like 17 pages behind, but wanted to let you know that "Beth near Buffalo" (that's me) actually lives in Orchard Park, NY and our official tally for snowfall in the past 24 hours is 77 inches! Crazy, heavy, wet snow that is a bear to dig out. My husband and I are taking a quick break and then tackling the worst part ... the bottom of the driveway where the plow compacts the snow. We'll be using a coal shovel to break it up and then try to move with the snowblower. A few pics yesterday and today. More lake effect snow expected tonight!

Oh my stars and whiskers, Beth, that's a lot of snow! Makes me want to go light a fire in the fireplace. Be safe out there!1

DD took me to see my husband last evening. He was doing well, and is getting stronger. Our goal is for him to work on his health and the visit showed that he is making progress. I am pleased to see his progress & I am looking forward to having him healthier and being with me in our apartment. It may be a bit longer, but his progress is excellent and worth it.3

Thank you my friends...
What I learned and solutions from the past week.
Letting husband take responsibility for his own illness. Help when I can just as I would like someone to help me without doing too much for him. ie try not to step in and do it for him when it is important he do it himself.
Listen to my gut and follow through with a no if it is telling me not a good idea. Going out to dinner in a snow storm with DH. Not driving down to visit son if I will need to drive back in the dark and especially if snow is in the forecast. (a blizzard)
Ask for if I need space. If not willingly given walk away.
Follow through with some ideas given to me when I wrote to Pet Summit group. Add Vit C ester to her diet to better absorb iron. Dogs need a different form of Vit C than us. I have Thunja on order to help her overcome the negative effects of too many vaccines.
Continue to get my car fixed in a timely manner. Having a car working well and with new tires from another recent visit was probably part of along with drive at reduced speed I was going 40 on a stretch of road I normally go 65-70 is what saved me from an accident and or going in the ditch in my trip back from son's.
Visit my son for lunch at this time of year so I will not have to drive back in the dark.
Bought two more space heaters that are temperature controlled. They will only go on if the space gets too cold. By doing this I will not have to worry about frozen pipes or my plants upstairs dying from freezing. Also space heaters will not go on unless the temperature in the house drops below 60. I am keeping on in the kitchen because the refrigerator stopped working at 41 degrees. The freezer quit working. The furnace was working when I checked on it today.
Continue with learning more about Reiki and energy work. Having already learned about some of the tools made a huge difference in helping me through this week.
When asking for help from my spiritual guides the first thing I try to do is ask for protection and atunement. (some say balance). I like atunement because it makes me think of a piano. When the piano is tuned it plays at its best. After that I ask for a healing light and make sure I am well grounded. In many ways it is a way of praying.
The most recent skill she taught me was to think of the light like a waterfall that is washing away all the energy that is keeping you from your best self. Then join hands over your heart and send love into your heart. This is especially effective for those who find themselves always giving until they feel depleted.
Yes I want to practice these new skills just not all at once like this last week.

Ok Ladies,
I was a bit shocked at some of your reactions to a gift that takes so much time and love and is given with care.... reject the gift, throw it in the trash, ask the gift giver to not give.... wow. regifting or bringing it to share with the office, neighbors, freezing and eating over time... those make sense to me.
So my question is what do you give to neighbors, friends, and service providers? All my neighbors bring me gifts, and when I was a gardener all my clients gave me a Christmas gift or tip, and even now some of my more regular embroidery clients give me Christmas gifts/tips. If I did not do cookies, I would be out spending far more on gifts to these folks. Last year I ended up with 4 beautiful poinsettias, a couple of starbucks cards, and 6 (ish) bottles of wine. Any one of those cost more than a single tray of cookies, and like Debbie I do customize the trays if I know what one family really likes.
Confused in California - Kim
I'm wayyyy behind, but I have to put in my two cents worth here. I'm a little surprised by the negative response to home baked gifts as well. It should never be about the gift, but the thought behind it. I made cookie trays for years and used them as a way to thank others for their friendship and contribution to our lives. It was all I could do and even then it was a strain on our budget. There's nothing wrong with gift cards or even doing nothing (although that one makes me sad), but there is something special about receiving a homemade gift. In a day and age where we seem to have lost so much of the ways of the past ... cookie trays and things like this are especially nice. Make your cookie trays!

Yesterday I made hamhock and pinto bean soup for Lee. I had about 2 cups of my shrimp, potato, mushroom, onion and wild rice soup from the day before. I added my cantinnelli white beans, more water and chicken stock, and a couple more baby potatoes cut up small. Then because I had pretty much ate most the shrimp pieces out, I took a tilapia fillet, (still frozen) and popped it in the hot soup. I buried it within it, and just let it cook. Never done that before, but hey, it worked. After simmering awhile it was white and flaky, so I just stirred it in. It was great! Fish soup!
Lee doctored his soup with a bit too much steak sauce and it was orange and a bit too tangy. Not my problem! His soup experiment, his monkey!
Last night our oldest sailor son called and I was able to have a 2 hour chat! We watched an anime Netflix series together, him on his computer and me on my tablet, and us talking and laughing on our phones. He's such a fun kid. I will post a video of a car meet he went to. He is the guy towards the end with the silver Japanese van and the small.scooter inside. He made a good impression and I can see him meeting up with group to socialize in the future.ππ»ππ€

Well today was a success. First time taking Lucy in the stroller while yogi and chispas walked along side. Lucy either has a broken toe or an infection on that toe. We are going under the assumption that it is an infection. Sheβs on pills and soaking the toe in warm water and Eason salts. After 4 miles, I put the little one in the stroller and kept walking so yogi can get his 6 miles in. When I was soaking her toe, her sis hung out.10 -

Welcome to the new people and the returning friends!
Pip ... you are a great dog mom!
Now I've caught up with the posts I've missed ... so much going on ... and I'm going to miss responding to some of you, I am sure. So just know that I was sighing and praying and ooh-ing and ah-ing when I was reading.
Ginny ... what in the world was your co-worker thinking? Hope your Covid is a mild case.
Kay and Flea ... praying your symptoms are soon gone as well.
Heather ... hope you and Johnny are soon on the mend and it isn't a recurrence of Covid. Looks like you had a fabulous cruise.
Machka ... sorry your December "plans" include surgery.
Debbie ... did I read you're dealing with skin biopsies?
Vicki ... hugs...
Margaret ... hugs to you too ... hurting people hurt people ...
Karen ... Yay for your brother! I am so thrilled things are finally working out for him! You are a great sister! The squatty potty video is hysterical!
Lanette ... I am interested in monitoring our electric consumption too.
Lisa ... rolling veins ... so sorry! Nothing like being a human pin cushion. Hopefully the increased energy will make it worth it.
My husband and I have finished clearing out the driveway snow ... one shovelful at a time! As my husband told his sister: You jam a snowblower in it and clear it foot by foot. You need to take a shovel and break it down as you go. Five hours yesterday and about 4 hours today. I am amazed, frankly, by how much stamina I had wielding a heavy snow shovel through snow over my head and wading through snow that was heavy and waist high. Who would have though that my knees could take it all. But other than normal tiredness, I'm ok!
We got all of my mother's things moved out of storage and moved her into her enhanced living apartment on Tuesday. It will take her time to adjust to her new surroundings and this weather event here in my neck of the woods has not worked in her favor. Staff not available. People providing service to her that usually don't work with the residents. It's an all-hands-on-deck effort when people are trapped in their homes due to snow. The move has been stressful for her and she doesn't understand that and has been very impatient and agitated today. A recipe for her taking risks with her care that she shouldn't. As soon as the travel bans are lifted, I'll be making a point to be with her to settle things down again.
November Gratitudes: Holiday - Easter, but I love Christmas too. Texture - plush blankets, we call them "feely" blankets. Abilities - to see the upside of situations. Sight - the sun! Season - Fall and then winter ... I know, why? I just do. Body - my strength and stamina, even though both are not what they used to be. Knowledge - the Truth; Piece of Art - Louis Comfort Tiffany's Holy Spirit Window, long story highly special to me. Touch - my husband's hug after a long day.

Pip poor Lucy! You are taking such good care of her. You do so well on exercise!
Heather hope you and DH feel better soon!
Beth I repeat what others have said - be so careful shoveling that stuff! There's no hurry. Take your time and do small paths.
I'm thinking about new electronics for my birthday/Christmas. I'm looking at a Kindle Paperwhite e-reader. It supports audiobooks with Bluetooth earbuds, but it might be too large for a pocket. I could use my Android phone with the earbuds, but I'm not sure I have enough memory on my phone. Hmm. For those of you who exercise with audiobooks, what devices do you use?
It would be so cool if I could walk and "read" and get a new exercise boost going. My body needs work!

When I went to a place for lunch called Shabuya(hot pot place) I was surprised to see fish on the buffet line(all raw that you cook in your pot on the table)- I tried a little and it was so good. I went back and got more. We went Thursday and the main two things I had in it was the fish and imitation crab. Had some fish balls but they used different ones this time, not very good and they had a lot less options on veggies. The fish cooks up really quick in the broth and tastes so good.0 -
Beth - so glad you popped in to give us the snow report. Good for you "manning" that shovel. Great cardio. I always thought trying to walk through the deep stuff was more tiring than shoveling. Nothing like that lake effect snow. We generally get a day or two of the heavy, branch breaking stuff in the spring. This past spring it fell as the trees were leafing out and the breaking branches sounded like gunshots throughout the neighborhood. Hope we don't get a repeat.
Barbie- I have now read two "Thursday Murder Club" books - the first one and the "Man Who Died Twice" and have "The Bullet that Missed" on order from the library. Have you found any authors who write similar books? I really do get hooked on these unique characters and clever and fast moving plots. I laughed out loud a lot with the first two.
One more night of lows below freezing - it was 19 this morning, managed to get up to 50 this afternoon.
I'm still keeping tabs on the electricity usage. For sure, anything that generates heat uses electricity! The oven, heaters, even the TV - you can feel it getting warm after a bit. But the TV didn't use as much as I thought it would. At the beginning of next month I'll give an summary of how everything did with the Kill a Watt.
You know, that Kill a Watt would be useful in a "tool library". It's not something a person uses all the time but would be nice to have for a week and test various appliances and fixtures.
It's getting dark so I'd better head out and grab the hummingbird feeder so it doesn't freeze tonight. The Anna's hummers just about attack me when I'm hanging it out on these 20 degree mornings.

Hello again!
Thanks for the birthday wishes! They warm my heart.
I did my dumbbells Yay! I'm back up to thirty reps. Yay! Except for the crunches, after twenty I got a weird pain along my right leg. So that will take a little longer.

Annie, I have an extra memory card in my Android phone which I think is what allows me to have so much music, so many podcasts, one audio book and one or more e books on the kindle app. I have a ton of entertainment at my fingertips.
Pip, sending hugs to you and Lucy.
