30 Days of Gratitude
1. Smell - freshly cut grass on our lawn.
2. Technology - the amazing advancements in medical technology.
3. Colour - blue. Beautiful blue sky peaking through the clouds.
4. Food - soup. That's what I've been eating just recently because there's less chewing. We always keep a few cans of soup on hand for situations like these.
5. Sound - my music. I've recently acquired a number of nature sounds CDs with music playing along with sounds of ocean waves, birds, and so on. Lovely.
6. Nature - I love nature. It would be incredibly difficult for me to pick just one thing. I am so grateful that there is nature and that I can enjoy it.

Okie – no, we won’t be going up to see PJ, unfortunately. For one thing, we have no idea when he’s going to be putting on the roof so we can’t make any reservations. This is the holiday season so you know hotels will book up fast.
Mary – I don’t know your specifics like why you are looking for part time work, how many hours do you need etc. etc. I can only tell you my experience. I enjoy working at BK. Well, most of the time. Anyway, it’s 5 miles from my home, they are very flexible (when I had a dermatologist appt. on a Monday at 9a.m, they let me come in on Sunday night to do my work), I’m really not looking for more than 4 to 5 hours/day. They let me take a month off to go to FL last year and I’m sure they will again this year. The other day I had to go for blood work. They let me start, punch out to get my blood drawn, then come back to finish. Works for me! I especially like the flexibility.
I was so annoyed with Jerry before, I forgot to mention that since I’m not working tomorrow, the plan is to do a Prevention Get Moving DVD. Then, since it’s supposed to rain, I’ll either do a walking DVD or a yoga DVD or perhaps both. Well, I think I’m getting over the annoying part.

Michele the only reason both of us wanted to work part-time was to be more active. We can only play so much... I wanted something physical or rewarding that's why I thought of companion care. Having only one vehicle here is the main issue since I have to drive John to work Monday and pick up Thursday and that limits my availability since John doesn't have set hours, he sometimes will start at 4:00am Monday morning or 9:00am... I definitely won't want to drive him in at that early time. I can't stand still in one place because of my back so I can't cashier or do fast food. I'm thinking about forgetting about how horrible students treat the substitute and just do that 2-3 days a week and not work if John has to go in early on Monday. If I could stand still in one spot I would definitely like your job! It's nice that they work with you when you need time off!

Happy Sunday, my chickens... we're off to a chilly start here in Arkansas.
Which reminds me - Karen, we were under a tornado watch for a bit on Friday, but we didn't even get high winds here. Went right around us. We live in Crawford County, and the tornado touched down across the border, in Oklahoma. Little Idabel, OK, got hit hard.
Well, all the electronics have adjusted back an hour automatically, but there are a few analog clocks that need to be changed. I'm going to let Corey do that when he gets up.
Going to settle down in the living room with my laptop and see how much I can get written. Hope it is, was, or will be a lovely sunny Sunday for everyone. It's nice to look at 6:40 on the computer clock, and it's light outside already.
Catching up on my Gratitudes:Kim - Thanks, I swiped your list!
1. Smell - I am grateful for the smell of baking bread in my own kitchen.
2. Technology - While I have my doubts about it sometimes overall, the internet fills my life corners in ways I could never have predicted, like y'all's friendship and support, and I'm grateful.
3. Color - I am grateful for all the jewel colors, the ruby reds, sapphire blues, emerald greens, the saturated, satisfying colors.
4. Food - I am grateful for the foods that feed my soul as well as my stomach--the comfort foods of home and Mama - beans, cornbread, southern and TexMex cooking.
5. Sound - My husband's snores. Means I don't have to check to see if he's breathing...
6. Nature - Watching the deer munch their way across the tree line. They're so beautiful...

Boy! It has been a blustery week/weekend here on the shores of Lake Michigan! Yesterday the wind was constant and the gusts got strong enough to cause some tree damage. We have a few branches down from our birch in the front yard. One landed on the roof, so we will have to go up and take a look. Our roof is about 25 years old, so it is in need of replacement, anyway.
I have been keep a cold at bay for two weeks now; but today I woke with full on groggy blah cold symptoms. I think I am just worn down after having the kids here for vacation. (Glorious, but not restful vacation). So...nasal rinses, saline spray and gargle, teas, water, hot shower, and a shot of the hard stuff (Mucinex night shift) before bed, tonight. I will be inside doing paperwork today and a bit of housework.
I am living vicariously through Heather and Rori's travels; as are the majority of us. I get a giggle when I imagine all of there with them "in spirit". A gaggle of "spirit" women crowded into every cafe, market, class, and photo!
Like Machka I am curious as to whether Rori has tried and likes the durian! I wish our local supermarkets would offer samples of produce for people to try; rather than the deli samples that seem to be the norm. Just think how good that would be for children (and adults) to try a fruit or veg. When I was small, if my mother took me shopping with her and I was good, she would let me pick a fruit or veg of my choice. I would always pick a coconut. lol I think part of the fun was getting the darn thing opened.
Michele According to my DD, her hubby really enjoys all of the family time and the things we do together. He wants the boys to have a stronger family connection that he has/had. His parents came here from Mexico before he was born. He has three older siblings. His oldest brother is 20 years older than him, the other brother is 18 years older and his sister is 12 years older (sister married and moved back to Mexico). His father was an orphan, so there is no extended family there. His mother is an only child and her parents passed away before she came to America. My SIL spent a large part of his childhood translating official conversations and documents for his parents. He went along to bank, doctor, mortgage, etc appointments to translate the confusing language for his parents. His father passed away his junior year in college. He and I get along very well due to common interests in books, movies, political viewpoints, etc. He is forming a bond with my husband, which I am very happy for, because they are very similar in that "quiet, brooding, guy" kind of way. Anyway, I am happy they are getting the ball rolling in terms of moving to Michigan. My own DH would have the opportunity to bond a little more with the boys. We would be able to see them and not feel that we need to be go-go-going all of the time due to a time crunch. PLUS, both of our families would be able to travel to other places for vacation, due to not having to use all of our vacation time and money visiting each other.
My DYS has asked if I would like to take a trip with him! He asked if I would like to fly out to Seattle, explore the city/area for a couple of days then take the Amtrack back, using the hop on/hop off benefits and exploring a couple of National Parks as we return back to the mid-west. I love this kid, and I am so happy he wants to spend time and hang out with his old mom. SO...we are making plans for next September, I think. Prices a little better and crowds a little less "crowded". We are both very excited. He keeps sending me National Parks videos! lol
Oh well, the day moves on and I had better get busy. Sending love and hugs to you all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)7 -
Kelly- how exciting isn't that fun.. and something to look forward to..
And wonderful that your daughter and son in law want to move closer .. yipee..
Lol so Miles great grandpa,Kyles grandpa used to give all the babies when they were little a jelly donut.. so the tradition continues ..4 -
With the power out yesterday I was especially grateful that I don't need coffee to get my day started. When I got back from my walk Just after 7, our street had neighbors reaching out to each other about getting coffee.. Jake heated water in a kettle on top of the wood stove and the neighbor across the street had a jar of instant coffee. Once everybody had coffee, they brought out their rakes and garden gloves and began clearing the street and piling branches along the side of the road.
Our across the street neighbor who is also the computer troubleshooting guy climbed up on our roof to clear off branches and discovered that a branch had made a hole at the peak of the house. We're going to take them out to dinner this week to say thank you. Jake was able to call the roofing company and someone will come over today to look at it.
When we thought the power would still be off today, we cancelled our grocery pickup for this morning because we didn't want to buy more things for the fridge and freezer with the power off. Then, when the power came back on later, we placed the order again and will be able to pick it up at our usual 8-8:30.

Flea … Everything you said about taking care of elderly parents is spot on. I am currently making every decision for my mom (I'm her POA also). I've been purchasing a new bed, new recliner for her ... mostly without her input. From an uniformed view, this might look like I was over-lording it with my mom when in actuality I'm ensuring that her assisted living apartment is set and ready for her use on Thursday the minute she gets in it. She has no physical endurance to "shop" anymore and we are on an incredibly tight timeline. The few times I've been able to give her "choices," she has become overwhelmed. And this is just furniture. Financial details, insurance ... at 91, that's more than she can now handle.

Good morning ladies!
Yes taking care of a parent requires a lot of balancing needs and independence. My mom still cuts her own hair, and refuses help. So I let her do that even though it looks a little odd. It satisfies her. Some days she is more mentally sharp and other days she just is overwhelmed by the trivia of life. I guess we all have our ups and downs.
Anyway we had a lovely birthday party for her, with fancy flowered paper plates, cups, and napkins. We had lots of real flowers too. And a lovely cake. Some family came over and the whole thing lasted an hour and a half. Just right.
Annie in Delaware8 -
Lisa - so happy you had an energized day, hope you get many more soon.
Rebecca - your surgery is scheduled on what was my grandfather’s birthday.
I’m with your son, I would love to have trains around a room. The funeral director in the town I grew up in had trains going all through their basement. They went through walls had mountains and tunnels it was great fun.
Machka - I hope that your nose cancer is very minor. My cousin had a terrible time with hers.
Heather - I’m enjoying your cruise with you. Beautiful watercolour.
Debbie - your cats are well treated, I would never make myself uncomfortable for a pet in that manner.
Lanette - we are having terrible staffing shortages here as well.
Barbie - I love the heat from a good fire in the wood stove, but I will never have one again. I grew up cold and refuse to ever do it again. DH told me several times early in our marriage that I needed to have a big fancy house. I told him all I needed was a full bathroom, hot running water and heat and I would be very happy.
Mary - I hope that she eventually has charges laid against her, I’m sure you’re not the first victim.
Is the TENS machine like the Dr. Ho? How do you know where to place the pads?
Rosemarie - have you read any Nora Roberts? She has cafes, bookstores and such in her storylines. If you are not familiar I can recommend a few of hers that the settings alone make you want to read over and over.
Barbara - why does Joe hate those noises so much? I’m just curious. It’s something that needs to happen you should be able to do it when you need to not just when he is away.
My hair has tangled at different stages in life. I’ve used leave in conditioners to help. I also used “No More Tangles” at times. I don’t know if they even make that anymore. I only wash my hair about every three days unless I have done some dirty work.
Debbie - that is just rude for your husband to vacuum while you sleep. I can’t imagine.
Katla - I’m so incredibly sorry you are separated from your husband except for Tuesday’s. Can you take a cab or have your daughter drop you off?
Allie - Miles is a cutie. Neither of my Grands like Mac and Cheese, it’s surprising to me.
Lanette - my daughter moved “outside of town” in 2020, she grew up in a city and it didn’t take her long to learn she needed to plan her trips. She is 35 minutes at minimum from a store. The cheaper stores are almost an hour. She keeps an ongoing list on her phone now. Her DH also works in a town so always checks in before coming home to make sure there is nothing required.
Kelly - how exciting that your daughter’s family may move to Michigan. So happy for you and I hope it happens very soon!
Debbie - Has there been any news in your Mom’s roommate moving out? She just needs to go.
My eldest daughter who was just diagnosed with ADHD had sound sensory issues. There are special earplugs that help with it. I forget what they are called.
Flea - I was going to talk about POA’s as well, it is a huge responsibility and not much gratitude shown. My brother is our Mom’s and before she was put in the nursing home she would call me and I knew how angry she was at his decisions. Every decision he made he discussed with me and I was in agreement so I would calm her and tell her he was only making decisions to keep her safe and healthy.
Working in a nursing home I see a lot of POA’s in tears because they know they are doing what’s best, but their parents/loved ones don’t understand and is just angry with them.
Michele - I worry for you being alone with Jerry driving him home. It seems to me he may be aggressive when angry, I worry you may so not sometime and he takes it out on you. Please be careful.
Mary - we had a substitute teacher in grade 6 for a few days as our teacher needed surgery, boys in my class were horrendous. After one boy mouthed off at him he assigned the boy to teach the lesson the next day. It’s funny I still remember how proud that student was and it actually changed his demeanour to teachers.
My Grandmother tried to substitute for a year but didn’t like the students behaviour so decided not to continue.
Annie - happy that your mom had a great birthday.
I am trying desperately to get stockings completed so I can get them mailed. It is hard to keep up and do that at the same time.
I woke up early this morning 640, when I came out of the bedroom DH says you know it’s only 530 right? I said a foul word and went and brushed my teeth. I will regret being up so early later on today, but maybe I will sleep well tonight for a change.
I am meeting my youngest daughter and two of her friends at a craft show today. I am looking forward to it. May get a baby snuggle in, but I have told the young mom that I know how important Mama time is and I understand if I don’t see the baby. She will just need to visit me soon.
My eldest daughters Grandmother in Law is in hospital, she has been having a stomach issue they have been trying to nail down. Turns out she has a cancerous growth on her gallbladder. Due to her age they are not operating. She was on a see saw with her great grandchildren just two weeks ago, she is not frail.
Michaela has been going to church and Sunday school with her for the last year or so, they then go to Wendy’s for lunch. This will be very confusing for Michaela. She has been praying for her Grandma. I have bought her a Precious Moments children’s Bible for Christmas, I think she’ll enjoy it.
I am still unable to post pictures through the app on my iPhone. I’m still using the trick that Rita shared a few months ago. I’ll switch and post a picture of our yard.

I missed the window for posting photos with 4g, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow.
We had a wonderful time in Valencia. Weather was HOT! We took an introductory tour this morning to get our bearings and an overview, and then caught the shuttle bus into the old town centre to see the cathedral and wander the streets. Had a sandwich and a small beer for lunch. Loads of outside cafés and restaurants, very busy. There was a traditional dance festival going on with folkloric dress. Watched that for a while. There was a service in the cathedral, but they let us in . We saw the supposed 'Holy Grail' .
Then we got a bit lost trying to find the train station, as it had been recommended. Worth the effort in the end, even though I was knackered by then. Recovered with a sit down at a café and a sparkling water. Then caught the shuttle bus back.
I've showered and snacked and had a gin and tonic. Tonight is the second performance of the group we loved the other day. Hooray! I will give my 'leather ' leggings a second outing and I have a top with glittery sleeves.
Sorry about the photos, I was napping. !!!
Much love, Heather, leaving Valencia. Xxxxxx7 -

Did Prevention Get Moving DVD then Leslie Sanson’s 4 Mile Walk DVD. It looked like it stopped raining so I started to go for a walk. Only it started raining so I guess I got in about ¼ of my walk. It doesn’t look like it’s raining now. I’ll go check weather.com and see if it’s supposed to rain
Made brownies for Jess and her friend. I’ll just put them in the freezer (with the cookies) for when they come
Mary – at the Aldi around here, the cashiers are sitting down. I believe I saw a few at Lowe’s Hardware doing the same thing. Not sure if WalMart does still or not. Someone said to me that WalMart is only hiring full time people. I’m thinking that their definition of full time is 8 hours/day. I’ve seen a lot of fast food places (like Subway) where there’s one person on the register and another person getting the order. If I were you, I’d go to the place, explain your situation that you have to be sitting. What’s the worst they can say? “We can’t hire you”. I can tell you that when I volunteer in the box office at the Green Room (community theater), I’m for the most part sitting down. And they are flexible.
KJ – that’s awesome that your son wants to take the trip with you!
Barbie – how lucky your neighbor found that hole! Can you temporarily cover it so that you don’t get water in your house.
One of the few things that Denise feeds PJ is mac & cheese. That and chicken nuggets. If someone else makes a dinner, she’ll give him some. French fries, too.
Tracey – I thank you for your concern. Sometimes I am too. But on the other side of the coin, I have noticed that lately Jerry has seemed to be able to get not as angry as he did before. Now I’m hoping that he isn’t cutting corners on doing his job just so that he’s done and I can take him home. But if he is, it’ll come back to him. Not my place.
Ohhh...the sun’s out now so I’ll probably be able to go for a walk. Life is good!
Since we’re not putting out any Christmas decorations, Vince already has 7 of the 9 trees decorated. I have a religious picture from my grandmother that I’d like to send to Anna (she took care of my father, she’s from Poland). I can’t read Polish. It just means something to me because it was my grandmother’s. I know that when I go, Denise will have no interest and neither will Jess since she doesn’t speak or read (like me) Polish. Oh, I can say A FEW (very few) words in Polish, but I sure can’t read it. I think Anna will appreciate it. Yes, it’ll cost to send it to Poland. But in the end, I think it’ll be worth it.
Tracey – from your picture, I’ve had my fill of snow for the year...lol

Happy November!
I am going to to my best to stay on course and see a “3” as the second digit this month. I have been hanging around 142-144 the past month.
A few of my friends, who like me, have no family left or nearby are going camping for Thanksgiving. Our plan is to cook the entire meal outside over either charcoal or wood fires. It will keep us busy if nothing else.
We got our first snow at lower elevations last night, just enough to make mud later today if the sun comes out.
Good luck to all with meeting our goals this month.

No snow here yet in the Southeast. Getting into high 30’s at night and air conditioning in the day! Lol.
My DH does most of the cooking and he does smoked turkey outside every year. He was doing that before we ever went full time RVing. I love the turkey that way.

Kelly- have you ever asked the produce person if you could try something? I know the store my dh works at, they will cut it and let you try it.
That trip with your son sounds amazing- I am sure you will both have a great time and enjoy every minute of it.
Lisa- most of our clocks changed like they are supposed to- a few dont. like my computer. For some reason, when the time change comes, it changes TWO hours instead of one. Does it each time.
Right now I think it needs a new Cmoss battery- It shows the right time when I turn it on but still says the same time hours later unless I click on the time and then it fixes it and stays fixed.
Annie- party sounds sweet- just long enough.
Michele- You inspire me- I need to pull out some exercise dvd's and try them. With rain coming, I won't be able to walk the wetlands as much(unless I get a good rain coat/pants(or see if I can fit into the ones mom gave me years ago,) I need to change it up anyways. See if that helps get these numbers down.
Has anyone heard from Julie(sorry, can't remember her other name)- miss her and a few others like Kayla(I think that is how she spelled it )
Tracey- Thanks- The cats are a bit annoying some times but also a nice comfort too.
Hope you have fun at the craft fair. I miss selling at them. Not sure when we will start them again.
Yes, dh is rude and I have talked to him about it and other things(having his tv too loud when I am trying to sleep- I get a oh, sorry as I close his door but still continues to do it)
This morning he was up early to go to his mom's. He didn't set her clocks back so she would be expecting him when she thought it was 9. Of course, woke me up. I don't think he is doing it on purpose, he just doesn't think. He truly doesn't know how to be quiet- he gets upset with me when I ask him to talk a little softer when he is talking to me because he is too loud. It is the worst in the car.
No word on mom's room mate moving. I told mom that she may not want to but she may have to just tell her she has a month to move out. I was hoping to have her out by Dec. 1st but unless she goes on her own, won't be happening.
Heather and Rori- Thank you for taking time to share your pictures. They all look amazing. We are looking forward to taking a trip, any trip but the way it is, won't be until MIL dies or we put her in a home-DH is over there twice a day, even though he doesn't really need to, once is plenty. One day we will take another cruise or a road trip.
really was looking forward to sleeping in but of course, that didn't happen(because of dh). The master bath light/fan are on one switch and the fan is supposed to be a quiet one but it isn't! because of that, he turns the radio up in the shower so he can hear it. He can't hear well in my opinion(or maybe it is just a lot of selective hearing) then leaves the door open with fan/light on while he gets ready. No way to sleep through that. If he had changed the clocks at his mom's(I reminded him before he went over yesterday evening) we could have both slept an hour longer- Instead, up at 7. Got up and cleaned up the messes from the cats- fed the cats and now having my tea.
I thought it was supposed to rain today so decided to just stay home and watch church- well, no rain but just not feeling like going- I will watch here, while I have more tea.
Have oatmeal cookies to bake later. Dough chilled over night- added a mix of dried apples/cranberries/raisins/walnuts to it. Didn't have plain raisins last time and had bags of the fruit/nuts from food program to use up. MIL loved them- only gave dh one of the dozen I sent over.
Cooked a big salmon filet for all of us last night- Lucky's had it on sale this weekend. 4 lbs and there is a small piece left- MIL actually said it was "very good"- a comment I rarely get from her.
This after noon I will cook steak for her and DH- need to see if they need more rice or if they have some left from last night. Will pull out my big meat tenderizer machine and do some chicken breasts and a few little pork chops I picked up yesterday. The machine is a bit of a pain to wash so will do both meats so two meals worth prepped. I really want to try some of the beef steaks and make cube steak out of them. Ds and I both aren't fans of most beef because we hate tough meat, like not tough at all. (he also will not eat anything if it has bones- no fried chicken except tenders.
Will bake brownies for ds and his girlfriend.
Scale is back up a bit again. Down three ounces, down another three last week then up 6 this morning. Stuck at 145.2
Another almost two weeks until my phone appointment with the dietician
Ok, rambled long enough
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday.
Debbie

looks like I need to get the weed eater out- one of the cats just threw up grass which means it is growing too close to the catio and he got some. I am cleaning up enough hairballs/throw up without them getting the grass too.

My Grandmother tried to substitute for a year but didn’t like the students behaviour so decided not to continue.Annie - happy that your mom had a great birthday.

I tried the substitute thing for a year too.! Quit for the same reason and because the full time teacher did not respect or help me. So now I teach adults how to use a computer at the adult center. I really enjoy doing that!
I am glad that link helped you to post pictures!

Debbie ... what is a big meat tenderizer? All I've ever had to tenderize meat is a heavy meat mallet.
