Evening ladies
Yes I am in debt, and i will work to get myself out of it also..
Alfie and I just watching TV tonight.
Will have to think of a word for 20230 -
Lanette-regarding sugar-oh my yes. If that isn't the cause of the inflammation I fear I have some autoimmune disorder.
Lisa-thanks for pointing out the design element. I knew it was appealing to me but had no idea how to classify. Glad you get to see family again briefly.
Heather-I think the card looks nice-especially for a first attempt. I have seen many cards sold in stores that aren't as appealing.
Beth-so glad to hear you can make it to your mom. Tattoos are definitely an individual decision. It's nice we are all able to make personal choices.
Rebecca-it occurred to me when reflecting upon your kidney issue (or lack thereof), we also pick up a wealth of information on health issues here. I learn something nearly every time I read.
While I do write checks for a couple of things (trash service has no on-line pay, church has automatic withdrawal for a set amount but I have always preferred to contribute weekly so I can adjust amount (usually upward) if needed. I do use one credit card to pay for groceries etc., and pay it off twice a month (when I get paid).
Got haircut today and went for nice walk. Researched living possibilities some more. Took a nap. Tomorrow morning I am signed up for a webinar on how the retirement payments, etc. works. Turns out there are a few things to check on and get lined up. I can see why they recommend a 2 month to 6 month notice,
Take care all,

Heather I like the cover idea. I am with Lisa though, the line under the eyes for some reason disturbs me. Maybe angled across the face like from eye to jawline. That way it would still separate the yes from the mouth like what we see isn't always what is said.
Rebecca My ex has been fine with one kidney for almost 15 years now. Glad your doctors had some answers.
Jeannie and Michele Last night is the first time I have had to take an allergy med in several years. Once again have a migraine going on day 3 and a little facial discomfort, figured allergy med couldn't hurt.
Progression Small changes in attitudes and habits to make me and my life better. This week I have been packing lunches after dinner so they are ready in the morning. If I wait until morning, I usually end up eating chocolate or cookies most of day. I have also started asking someone to cover the counter for me for 15 mins so that I can actually eat. Small things, but that seems to be working for me. Like emptying the dishwasher before pouring coffee in the morning or taking my meds when I plug or unplug my phone (pm/am).
This is the first time I have sat down since we got home. The weather is warm and was still dry when we got home, so we took down our blow up Christmas items to pack away before they got soaked in the rain. Also took down some of the Christmas lights. I have gathered Christmas items from other rooms of the house and they are now concentrated in the living/dining room. I have really enjoyed the lights this year and will miss them, but like to start the new year with things put away. After Christmas it is only 8 weeks of "darkness" aka winter. Most of the put away will happen Saturday as we are off work that day and they are calling for rain. Once all put in totes we will put back in garage until quits raining, then take to the barn loft.
I have dishwasher running, laundry going, plants have been watered, sheets changed, and bed was sprayed with Lysol this morning. I try to do that when I change the sheets (once a week) or more often if either of us is sniffling. I don't wash our big comforter but 2 times a year.
Stay Safe!
Make the best choices you can!
Know that you are all loved by many!
Kylia in Ohio where this time last week it was minus 5 and tonight is 55 degrees.
PS- One thing I miss are thank you notes! Even a text would be nice, but apparently that is too hard to do for some especially grands and children. I was expected to write a thank you whenever I received a gift.2 -
cityjaneLondon wrote: »I've ordered the robins painting as a Christmas card from a different printing company to make a comparison. I hope it comes out more true. I did the first tree one as an experiment.

You never know until you try!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx
I go places around Tasmania and see that people are selling prints of their photographs of Tasmanian scenery and I keep thinking that one day I should try. Some of mine are as good as some of theirs.
I haven't quite got up the ... I don't know ... time/energy/courage to try. But as you say, you never know until you try.
I think the images on your card look all right, if it were me, I would change the text font and size as they sort of overwhelm the images.
Gift Cards - I use virtual Amazon gift cards for my overseas family in Canada and the US. I can tell if they were received/used if I wanted. I wouldn't send a person an actual gift card in the mail.
Tatoos - I don't have any and probably won't get any, but if I did, it would be a small bicycle on my ankle.
Pets - Rhody travels with us, but we have had a pet sitter for him on one weekend.
Online Transaction Cost - I think it depends on the bank and accounts used.
Finances - my father is very good with finances (and anything math in general), and took the time to teach me how to balance a chequebook, when that was a thing, and budget, etc. I am very thankful for that. My first husband had no idea about any of that and money went out faster than it came in. When he and I separated, it took me about 2 years to get into the black, and for the most part, I've been there since. Fortunately, my now husband is passionate about saving money.
Allergies - I take an allergy pill just about every day. Things bloom year round here! But when I bring out the Christmas decorations, I have to take an extra one for a few days because of the dust and this year the pollen count is high and I'm taking an extra one about every other day.
Machka in Oz1 -
Kylia -I usually make my breakfast the night before. Can’t be bothered to think first thing in the morning...lol I, too, was always expected to somehow acknowledge a gift, no matter how small. I still do. I always taught my children to but I guess it didn’t stick. Denise used to. I don’t know what happened (I do suspect but I don’t have any proof)
It’s been staying lighter longer...yea. 5:30 and it was still light out...yes!!!

dh and I have always had joint accounts. When we first got married, I paid all the bills out of those accounts(checking/savings), over time, he took over doing it(don't remember why the change).
He does have an account that was from when he had a small amount from direct deposit for saving bonds but when they stopped doing that, the money just went into the account, and now, he just puts money into it on his own. That is attached to his ATM card- He uses that when we are out shopping or will use cash. I am on all the accounts.
I also have my own accounts that I have started but never use any of them- just keep saving. He knows about all of them except one. That one I use my mom's address. I started it as a "just in case" account.
His check goes between our main account at the credit union and his ATM account and all the bills are paid from those two. My check goes into the main account. I do get a little each week from Ezie's mom(the county pays for her daycare but don't pay my full fee so she pays the difference)- that money is mine to use any way I want- I just keep saving. One of these days I will figure out what I want to use it for.
We are pretty much debt free- just normal bills- property tax/ insurance and monthly bills.
He is a shopper- constantly buying some new toy or gadget. He is working extra hours since they lifted the restrictions for retirees so I never say anything about what he buys.
My hope is that when his mom dies and we are not tied to her that I will use some of that saved money and do a nice cruise- just him and I- we need to do something to get back on track.
Until she is gone, we can't even get away for a day, the way it is.
Not sure how he will feel about it. He has said he would be ok but, he always invites a friend when we do vacations(we also always have our son and now his girlfriend with us on all trips)1 -
10,000 steps today!!!!! Yay! Only have done that 11 times all year. Yep, maybe need to work on that But happy for today! Did arm twirls and body twists too.5

Worked but the plan for tomorrow is to do Denise austin’s Quick Burn Cardio DVD
DrKatie – remember when we were younger and no matter how comfortable something was, if it wasn’t fashionable, we didn’t wear it? Now we wear clothes a lot for comfort
Tatoos: When I turned 40 I thought it would be way cool to get a second piercing in my ear. Today I regret that decision. So I’m afraid to get a tatoo. I may think it’s cool today but in 10 years? That’s just me. Ginny – I’m looking forward to seeing a pic of your tatoo
Karen – great suggestion to Kim to buy her own gift! But I would suspect that her mother wouldn’t like it, no matter what it was and wouldn’t want to give it to her
Heather – I am very impressed with all the new things you are doing
Rebecca – I’m so sorry about your kidney. Will you have to monitor your protein intake?
The weather here is really weird. At Christmas time it was down in the 20’s. Now for Nyear’s it’s supposed to be up in the 50’s. Go figure!
One thing I realized while we were at Jess’ was that the pants I was wearing, I must have bought about 15-17 years ago and they still fit! To me, that was something.
Think I’ll go for my walk.

28 An opportunity you’re grateful you had. To switch from Assistant Pricing Mgr to Network and PC Support Supv. – It let me keep my job for another 28 years, although we had to move to Boise for 27 of those
Ginny your penguin tattoo reminds me how much I miss Penny @lagopus.
Kylia so many are now enslaved to their jobs due medical insurance needs. Don’t envy your coming hard conversations with DH, his Sister and any other owners. Tough times.
Lanette, Could you take Sophie and Kitty with you to your SIL’s? Guessing Sophie is too big to fit in a Sherpa under an airline seat, perhaps on the train?
Barbie glad the park management is taking care of the trees. We’ve had some not-so-tall trees removed and yes it is a fascinating and scary process. Good question about the checks.
Michele, do you know how headphones could connect to the drum set? Is there a headphone jack or would it have to be Bluetooth or???
Kay I like your simple main categories and love your new comfy pjs.
for continuing to keep connected despite the pain.
Machka like your categories too. Must have been channeling you. Found MSAccess on my laptop and the Personal Account Ledger template complete with categories for income and expenses. Started entering 2023 income/expenses for tracking or figured out how to set budgeted amounts and reduce as expenses entered, but it feels good to play in a database again after all these years. Will use my “actual” spreadsheet to come up with budget estimates for 2023 and plop them into the db. Whee! That Stevens Pass video makes me think the SnowCat was a Zamboni.
Katla yours to Kim. Perfect.
Karen in VA those yorkies!
Margaret love the gratitude/great year jar idea. Stunning display!
Heather I’m in awe of your and Johnny’s watercolors.
Rebecca what a shocker. When is surgery scheduled? Or did they take the kidney when they took the gall bladder?
Debbie your red fringed boots and jacket sound so cute!
Lisa “I have loved . . . I feel as if I've lived with y'all, been part of your lives, and even seen into your hearts in some cases. This group is unique in my life, it always has been, and I am so grateful for y'all. ” Well, said, and amen, sister, amen.
Rosemarie sorry the new combo of meds had such a bad result. Glad you took quick action.
Michele still able to wear pants from 15-17 years ago? Bravissima!
Kim ((hugs)) Really admire your courage and ability to go from tears to laughing and dancing a jig. VERY well done.
Lanette, Michele, Karen and all, thank you for being so kind about my encylopedias
Tumble is squeaking that its way past Tummy Time. It’s not, but I’ll give in.

Heather, the paintings are beautiful! We send checks to our grandchildren for their birthdays. How would we send them money if we didn't use checks?
Direct deposit into their accounts.
That's how it's done here. That way they've got it right away without the hassle of having to find a bank that will cash the cheque for them.
That's what we do if we don't have cash on hand and there's a collection at work for someone's retirement or whatever too.LisaInArkansas wrote: »Regarding cash gifts, I purchase Visa or MasterCard cards for the older grands so they can get what they want wherever they want, rather than having to spend them in a specific store. I'm sure within reason they've never seen a check. The "credit cards" make more sense for a lot of different reasons. I wouldn't have had the foggiest clue what to do with it at their age, but they certainly know! I've also sent my son cash through Google Pay, but am a little uncomfortable with that. Not even sure why.
Recently (in the last few months) I overheard a conversation where an older person was trying to describe the concept of a cheque to a younger person. That you write the amount on a piece of paper and sign it and they can take it to the bank and the bank will give them money. The young person thought the older person was joking and couldn't believe it.Whidislander wrote: »Got your pictures Heather! Thank you ever so much! Well yesterday's kidney appointment was an eyes opening experience! The doctor announced that my right kidney is non functioning and has atrophied. Thank goodness that is the one with two large stones. My other kidney has taken up duty, functioning fine. He said many people lose one kidney and do just fine for the rest of their lives with the other kidney. My hemoglobin numbers are good in my left kidney, but I have to watch my creatinine numbers. Creatinine is a waste product from your muscles working properly. Unfortunately if my kidney isn't working well it can't filter creatinine out of my blood properly. So every 6 months I will get bloodwork to check that. Right now its at 1.8 which is good. So I was bummed I lost a kidney, but just like my gallbladder, I had lost the function of it a long time ago. I was really relieved that I don't have to get the stones blasted, that they are so big there is no chance of me ever having to deal with the pain of passing them! That really concerned me.
Rebecca
I'm glad you got it checked!
I'm still waiting to get in to see my kidney specialist.

I hope you get in to kidney doctor in a timely manner! Hugs!

SophieRosieMom wrote: »Kim - LOL the boot discussion with your mom the "pimp". Enjoy the boots! And enjoy your NYE fondue party. Do you get crazy fireworks in your neighborhood and does it bother Levi?
Ginny - I like that tattoo, very well done. So nice it has meaning with your kids - I think there are/were cultures where tattoos are familial custom. Anxious to hear what your final retirement plans will be as far as where/if you'll move.
Rebecca - stunning news about your non-functioning kidney, and happy for you it hasn't been giving any trouble. Hoping Lee does well changing his eating and getting those numbers down.
Barbara - my dog is too big to stuff into a carry-on. Maybe I could put a dress and hat on her and say she's my grandchild and keep her swaddled in a baby carrier Not sure how I'd explain the barking and screaming other than keep her drugged. Seriously, I haven't flown for over 20 years. Maybe some day. My brother told me he has Zoom hooked up so perhaps I can connect with SIL that way soon. I've used it in the past to take classes.
Machka - looking good! Great photo of you and your DH!
KJ - have a good trip. Can't wait to see photos of your grands.
Margaret - those rosemary trees are so nice. Gorgeous poinsettia's! I looked for a rosemary tree a few weeks ago, didn't see any, which is probably good. I already have 2 small potted rosemary plants that need to be repotted.
Regarding Finances - getting this stuff figured out early next year is one of my goals. While I enjoy budgeting, investing is at the bottom of my list, not that I have much to invest. Had a very good phone consult last week with a rep from my Credit Union. I don't have a beneficiary set up for my account. Since it will only go "into effect" when I pass, I can list anyone or any institution I want and I think it will bypass probate, so I'm giving it serious consideration.
Having Medical and Financial Powers of Attorney set up (plus the Community Property Agreement which is Ok for the State of Washington) was the best money we ever spent for peace of mind. DH's passing - no hassles, nothing "tied up". We had asked about a trust, our attorney said since we don't have children or anything complicated as far as inheritance, a trust isn't worth the bother.
Prior to getting all of that paperwork done, DH and I kept putting it off. Until he got a bad case of diverticulitis and needed colon surgery. THEN we had the serious talk that we can't put if off any longer. The surgery was a success and many worries taken care of.
Word for 2023 - I'm vacillating between Journey and Adventure. I continue my health and personal journey, but adventure has an air of fun and challenge. Maybe I'll just hyphenate since they'll go hand in hand for me as they have the past 6 months.
I can't come up with any goals other than keep working on my health (never ending journey there) and making improvements/cleanup to the property as time and budget allows.
Sugar and Inflammation - a final comment. Am I the only person in this group that had serious inflammation flares from hitting the sugary stuff and overeating over the past week? My broken toe/foot area has been really aching and swollen. Arthritis in right hand a bugger. Now, several days back into more healthful controlled eating and no junk food, everything is doing a lot better. Thankful.
That's it for now. Make it a fabulous day!

Flea - My Dad passed right before Christmas and I came home just the week before. It was a hard year. The next year felt more like the first one to me and since my Dad absolutely loved Christmas I chose to honour him by going all out. I think I have been ever since.
Beth - My Dad’s death, Christmas and birthday were all in less than a month of his passing. I feel for you and your Mother. Hugs to you.
Kim - I’m sorry your friend uninvited Levi. Sorrier still that she believes what she reads on the internet.
I’m glad your day was good though.
I don’t own a pet, but would not leave one outside overnight either.
We invited my friend and her dog Jeb to join us for Christmas. She and her dog went to our daughter’s with us for Christmas Eve and then came back to our place to spend the night. Jeb is a three legged Great Pyrenees, who sheds everywhere! I wouldn’t have invited Heather if I wasn’t willing to have Jeb.
I’m so sorry your Mom doesn’t see and appreciate you for you.
I love that she is getting your boots for you.
Heather - I enjoyed seeing you collages.
Barbara - how dependent we are on the internet nowadays. Even some of our lights are run via the internet.
Ginny - congrats on the first tattoo, it’s very cute/ I still haven’t taken the plunge but I have told my girls I will get one.
My daughters bought me a frame last year that people can send photos too. My youngest and her best friend send more than anyone to it. I just love it.
Kylia - I really miss people dropping in without an appointment. I miss a lot on your list.
Rosemarie- I had recommended that trilogy. It’s one of my favourites of hers.
Heather - I hope you and DH are able to have that difficult discussion soon. My Aunt and her second husband didn’t and she ended up completely broke as her husbands daughter had control and not her.
Lisa - I too appreciate Barbara’s posts. I always look for hers to make sure I’m not missing anything.
What date is Levi’s birthday, Michaela turns 7 on Tuesday. I am taking her clothes shopping Sunday afternoon and then she is having a sleepover. I don’t know where the years go.
I struggle cooking for 2 too.
Barbie and Lanette - I have the same problem as you with people acknowledging if a gift was received or not. I have quit buying for most of those people.
I don’t give money or cheques and will only under duress or specific requests give gift cards.
Michele - I think you should have that money and Vince is being difficult.
Rita - my parents never argued about money but my Dad spent every penny he made and then some. My brother learned to be the opposite of that and I am my Father’s daughter. I keep trying to do better.
Rebecca - my DH got diagnosed two years ago with Type 2 diabetes. He has taken control of his diet and has to only take one metformin a day. He has gone from a size 40 waist to a 36. The doctors have told him that he is doing everything perfectly. The dietitian told him not to completely restrict anything from his diet, just eat in moderation. One thing he really changed was he only eats sourdough bread now.
I took my tree down today. I left other decorations up. I am supposed to be getting two of my gifts tomorrow, one is new end tables. I wanted room to set those up. The other is a record player. I am excited for both.
DH slept off and on all day. He works nights and tries to switch back to days on weekends. He is frustrated that I let him sleep. I figure he needs it.
Tomorrow we are returning his Christmas gift and are supposed to go find a replacement. I’m not sure if we are or not. He will probably be sleeping since he won’t sleep tonight.

Heather,
I like the cards, but the one of the tree doesn't do the painting justice. Your painting is really wonderful and the card is nice. The card should be really wonderful, like the painting.
Re: the book cover. Very provocative. It makes me want to read the book. The line under the eyes makes me think of a transparent niqab. It adds to a sense of pensiveness. It distances the woman from the viewer, even though one can see her entire face. I want to find out what is underneath the invisible barrier. I like both versions of the cover.

Lisa, You made me misty-eyed. I realize I irritate some people with my unsolicited advice. Thank you for finding value in some of it. I am still learning.
___
Barbara, Ditto what Lisa said about your posts. I love them. You honor us by reading our posts so carefully and responding so personally/thoughtfully. I feel heard by you. Oh, and I wanted to tell you the rest of the story about the painting instructor. As she was folding my painting to put it in the scrap heap, the full sentence was, "I can use it for scrap...(fold)...unless you want to frame it." Listen, I could be offended, but the painting was truly fugly, and I know she won't be pulling any punches with me. I am sure I can learn from her, and I have enough ego strength to discard any criticism that isn't helpful. She doesn't intimidate me in the least, and by all accounts she is a good and dedicated teacher, so I will glean what I can from her, and also use other sources - my brother comes to mind - and perhaps someday I will be a painter.

Gratitude1 What is something that makes you laugh? Robin Williams movies.27 A movie you watch over and over: The Holiday
2 Something about the current season you’re grateful for: Very grateful for the cool fall weather and the lovely rains.
3 What about your body do you love/are you grateful for? I am grateful for my hair. It's a pretty color and has body/wave. I never have to fuss with it.
4 Who is someone in your life that you’re grateful for? I am incredibly grateful for the assistant marketing manager Stephanie at our retirement community, who is skillfully navigating us through the portal into our retirement community. Among other things, she tactfully negotiated to return the larger storage space that originally came with our apartment (it had been commandeered, lol), assigned us a prime parking space near the elevator in the parking garage, gave us a grace period before we have to start daily "check ins", took charge of a delivery of large awkward boxes in our absence, delivering them into our apartment with care, spontaneously recruited us to join into a trivia game that was already underway, and numerous other little thoughtful gestures. Plus she is super responsive to emails.
5 What is a book that changed your life? To Kill a Mockingbird
6 Think about something you’re good at: I'm good at packing a box with random items (like a puzzle).
7 What is a lesson you’re grateful you learned? I am still learning this lesson. Do not talk at/overwhelm my younger brother with too much information or too many questions. He is vulnerable and becomes anxious and ultimately angry - because he feels inadequate, which makes him resentful.
8 A basic need that has been met: Basic needs: food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter. All have been met with the possible exception of adequate sleep.
9 What are you most grateful for in the city/town where you live? Oh my gosh, there are so many great things about this neck of the woods. However, picking just one: I have a terrific network of friends and access to limitless resources in and around Richmond, VA where I live. So I would have to say "the people who live here".
10 What rejection in your life are you most grateful for? I am grateful for being rejected by my friend Liz in graduate school. We started out by ride-sharing to school and quickly became fast friends. Liz rejected my friendship when I betrayed a confidence involving another classmate Susan. I said something to Susan that tipped her off that Liz had revealed to me something personal about Susan that she had told Liz in confidence. Susan felt betrayed by Liz, and Liz felt betrayed by me. It was a life's lesson that I should have learned at a much younger age, but I learned it well and painfully this time, and paid dearly for it by losing Liz as a friend. It was excruciating. I apologized, but the damage had been done.
11 Something you use every day: I use my hot water kettle every day and I am consciously grateful for it every time I use it. I think, what a great little hot water kettle this is! every day, lol

12 Something you don’t need anymore.: I no longer need my beloved John Deere lawn tractor. Time to dispose of it.
13 Refuge – space you love in your home: In my new home (apartment), I love my very own room. It has things I love in it and is a calm oasis.
14 Item of clothing: I have a navy blue with white polka dots dress I love. Sometimes I wear red Danskins with it. And a string of fake pearls.
15 Taste: Comice pears with brie and Riesling
16 Touch: Casper the Cat's dense white fur (just a memory now)
17 Smell: Lily of the Valley
18 Sound: Snoring doggies
19 Sight: Nebraska sunrises and sunsets.
20 Texture: Silk
21 Color: Coke Bottle Green Sea Glass
22 A song that makes you happy: Scott Joplin Maple Leaf Rag
23 Type of weather you love: Summer lighting storms
24 Professional who helps you: Waiters, especially lately as we transition into our new community.
25 Something you take for granted: potable water
26 A TV show that you look forward to watching: CBS Sunday Morning
28 An opportunity you’re grateful you had: July 20, 1977 - Harry Chapin at Merriweather Post Pavilion
29 A place you love to visit: Sanibel
30 A tool you find incredibly useful: Not sure this is a tool, but my Seal-A-Meal is a godsend. I’m also rather partial to my cordless drill, level, and tape measure. The strawberry huller gadget is pretty awesome, too. And the egg slicer.31 A daily habit you’re happy you’ve cultivated: That’s easy. I check in with my MFP group every day. It’s a lifeline for me.

I'm so excited! My swimmer granddaughter is coming over today to swim, go to lunch, organize a closet, and play with the pups. Can't wait to see her!

This stuff (Prunella vulgaris L. or Common Self Heal) has sturdy roots! No wonder it spreads everywhere. I've decided to leave some in, but to plant a couple other things with similar hardiness to provide some competition.
So you decided it isn't Salvia after all? It's hard to tell - they look fairly similar - but Prunella has square stems, I believe.2 -

Doctor didn't mention anything about protein.

You might ask ... that's one thing I have to watch with my kidney damage. Fortunately, I don't consume much protein, especially not much animal protein.

Unfortunately the anti rejection meds he's on to keep his liver going slowing will affect his kidneys. Its a balancing act of taking just enough so his liver is good, but not too much.

I meant for you and your kidney issues. Protein is hard on kidneys.

I'm still not 100% sure but it is spreading everywhere including the lawn so whatever it is, it's persistent!1 -
The dry stream is finally making progress!! I've got the plastic down and the base gravel down. :)
Next is the top layer and then the "decorating".
