Got a nice run in yesterday evening. The temperatures have really jumped up which is good but I seem to wither badly in the heat and must get some sunscreen for my already weather beaten face.

@kgirlhart - I feel your pain on the stop/starting your watch. Every .o1 of a mile counts for me

How on earth did it get to be 2023 already!7

@tarun_yadavA It sounds like you can gain weight as easily as I can. I didn't think that was possible. You'll get it back off in no time. Way to get back into your routine, even if it was a struggle.
Nice running @Mari33a ! Sunscreen is important!
Nice to see you @TheMrWobbly ! I hope you are back with us. Not sure how it got to the middle of April of 2023!

On Saturday I went hiking on the Appalachian Trail for 14.29 miles. I forgot to charge my watch. It was at 23% when I started so I was impressed it lasted 9.5 miles of hiking in the mountains. It was chilly to begin but our first climb was 1.25 miles up mountain so that was a good warm up. It ended up being a beautiful day. I’ve lost almost 20 pounds since January and it really makes a difference climbing the hills. Less weight to haul up it! The wildflowers were in bloom all along the trail. (Beautiful pictures of the flowers @quilteryoyo. Love the bluebells!).Yesterday, I ran 6 miles followed by a 1 mile walk.
Bellwort
Showy Orchid
Squirrel Corn
Trout Lilly
Me!@shanaber – I didn’t realize the Boston Marathon was today until I was reading yesterday about the 10-year anniversary of the bombing. That tumbelator would scare me! Did you all notice when people fell, they actually bounced! I would break something for sure.
Beautiful way to start the morning.
Spring has sprung and things are starting to get green in my part of Virginia.
Welcome back @TheMrWobbly and back home @Tarun_yadavA (I’m sure you will drop those 11 pounds in no time now that you are back in a routine setting.)
@katharmonic - Glad you got your drains out and it sounds like your boyfriend is recovering well from his surgery also.1 -
@eleanorhawkins Good luck with the tapering and the race planning! I know it's not quite the same, be we are all cheering you on! Do you have a possibility to just go "nature girl" on the trail, or do you think there will be too many people/not enough nature around to find a "natural" bathroom? When I did the Paris marathon waaaaaay back in 2004, one thing I was shocked by, was that as soon as we entered this big park during the first half of the race, there was literally a man marking every tree. Obviously, not such a viable option for a women....
@tarun_yadavA Welcome back! I hope you have a nice trip! Good luck getting back into the swing of things! 10 days off must have been hard. I just took 4 off, and was a bit anxious about my run this morning.
@chris_in_cal I am coming to vacation to SoCal in July - will only need gloves, hat, scarves, etc. for visiting the supermarket . I always freeze in California when I go inside .
Today I wanted to do a 90 minute run with a round number of kms (just because). I had a lot of fun trying to get the 15kms in under 90 minutes- (was 4 seconds short, but I will count it as a win). I decided to wear shorts and a long sleeve shirt although it was only 7 C outside, which I was perfectly ok with, but I did have an older man riding by on his bicycle shake his head and raise his arm at me, which I thought was kind of a strange reaction, considering I was running up a large hill at the time and why should he care what someone else chooses to wear. I am much more concerned about strange people where I am running than stray dogs. The Germans as a whole tend to really have their dogs under control, but I mostly run on secluded routes where I can more or less be alone with my thoughts.
It felt really good to be back out running again this morning. My parents were here visiting from Va the whole month, which was wonderful! They left yesterday, so I do have more time for training now. My 100km bike race is this Sunday (yikes)! I have taken zero test rides with my road bike so far, so I will definitely be doing that before Sunday (after I pump the tires up). Surprisingly, I am only nervous about racing if it is raining (not about the fact that I have only being training running and not biking). If there is a lot of rain on Sunday, I might decide not to race, because I have no experience with my road bike in the rain. Fingers crossed for nice weather!

Thanks @Teresa502 . Love all of your pictures. I love all of the spring wildflowers. I started to comment the other day on how it looked like you had lost a lot of weight. You look great! Beautiful day for running too - love the sunrise photo and all the green. It makes me feel so hopeful.
Great running @Laurz9191 . I hope you can get in a good test ride before your race on Sunday and that it doesn't rain.
2 -
@Laurz9191 thank you and good luck to you for Sunday, too! If there was any way I could steal the rain and make it happen here, I would! No idea whether going nature girl will be possible, this isn't a trail out in the middle of nowhere, it starts and ends in Jerez city and visits the vineyards and sherry bodegas so even though I'll probably be the last runner I expect there to be plenty of people about.
Welcome back @tarun_yadavA I was starting to worry about you.
And welcome back to @TheMrWobbly too!
2 -
Great run @Laurz9191! I like those round numbers too!
Welcome back @TheMrWobbly!
Welcome home @tarun_yadavA! I'm not surprised by the 11 pounds gained while in the US. Our portion sizes are ridiculously large compared to most countries (so I've heard). You'll run that off in no time
Beautiful pictures @Teresa502! And congrats on losing 20 lbs. since January. That's awesome!
It was a crisp 52F this morning, but no wind. So pretty much ideal running weather. This was a very nice, easy run...up until the last .15 miles. RIght at about 6 miles I had a sudden urge to use the restroom (like really bad). I was about 1/4 mile from home, so I took the easy pace to tempo pace and got home JUST IN TIME 😆
Looking at the stats on Garmin I see I have a BUNCH of new metrics (stride length, vertical ratio, ground contact time, etc.) I saw that my watch wanted to do a system update last night, but didn't expect this. I love looking at all the numbers 😁

Also bring your bathing suit and sunscreen, just in case. And this year, in July, you can still go downhill skiing...so there is that too.

the question @Scott6255 is are any of them significant? I did an experiment yesterday as Apple has had those metrics for a few months. I ran the same 5k in the morning and then again at lunch. My effort for each was basically sprinting altho it doesn't look like it. Why was my lunch tie 5k so much faster when I might even have been less fresh?
Dang if I has known I was that close to 500 for the year I might have tacked some on this morning. LOL
4 -
Great running @Scott6255 . I'm glad you made it home in time. It's funny that you sped up. When I have to go, I slow to a walk so I don't jiggle it out. Enjoy the new running metrics.
Great running @SummerSkier . At least you have a milestone to look forward to tomorrow. The only thing I can say about your two runs is that your HR was a lot higher at lunch than it was in the morning, so I guess you were working harder, whether you felt like you were or not.
I was supposed to play tennis this morning, but we cancelled it due to it being so chilly and windy today. Instead of running early, I waited until this afternoon. I was happy that it felt so much better than my last couple of runs. Everything seemed to cooperate today. I didn't want to push it, so did take it easy, but ran longer before taking a walk break than I usually do. I did a run/walk of 4.2/3.8/4.3/3.8/4.4/3.8/4.5 mph for 9/1/9/1/10/1/10:43 minutes. That gave me 3 miles in 41:43 minutes. My Avg HR was 137, with a max of 152 bpm. That's a little high, but I wasn't huffing or puffing by any means. If I were running by feel only, it would have been an easy run. I also walked a mile total for warm up and cool down.

Thank you for the welcome back! I have started running again - not saying it is going well though
I am looking forward to catch up on how everyone has been getting on!

Morning everyone!
Got in a 4 today. Just about.
@Laurz9191 @quilteryoyo @Teresa502 @eleanorhawkins @Scott6255 thank you 😊
Had a great time! 1 week Florida (half Ft Laudy, half parks-y stuff in Orlando) + 1 week Caribbean cruise.
@Teresa502 - well done on losing 20 lbs! That's amazing!
@Laurz9191 same. Was dreading first run after so long. Today felt even worse!
PS: LOL @ tree marking! 🤣 (I didn't on mine btw. Bladder played ball!)
@Scott6255 - yes, those portion sizes 😱😱
And an all you can eat/drink cruise... Have ruined me! 😭5 -
@scott6255 Glad you made it home safe .
@tarun_yadavA A cruise eh? Yes, that can be an easy way to gain weight I would think. The only cruise I was ever on (at 13), I was seasick the whole week, so for me, it had an opposite effect . I am sure you will be running light lightning in no time. It seems like you are starting again slowly, which is good if you are having leg issues.
@Teresa502 Good job! I agree with the others! You look great .
@SummerSkier You also used different shoes for your trial? Maybe you were warmed up at lunch time? Or you are more of a lunch-time runner?
I am always unsure of what to do with all of the stats @SummerSkier, @Scott6255. I do sometimes look at cadence, because mine is a bit on the slow side when I am not doing speed work, but mostly I just make sure that I am emphasizing doing anaerobic stuff. Anaerobic is really not my favorite thing. So hard! I try to integrate bits of it here and there, but there has to be a balance between getting faster, having fun, and not getting injured.
Here’s a screenshot of all the anaerobic stuff I “need” to do
Today I went on a 9.2km easy run, with 6x 15sec sprints in the last 2k. The weather was a bit chilly but otherwise nice. I wished I had brought my gloves with me and my hands turned pretty red, but I didn't want to push the pace too hard today.
So far for April I have 97.5/175km. I am going to have to get some long sessions in next week to meet my monthly goal.5 -
April 1 – 3.33 miles
April 3 – 4.04 miles
April 4 – 5.50 miles
April 5 – 5.10 miles
April 10 – 5.32 miles
April 12 – 5.01 miles
April 13 – 5.51 miles
April 16 – 6.01 miles
April 18 – 5.01 miles
Total 44.83/95.00
I am not a stats person at all. I just get out there and run. I would probably improve if I did pay more attention to numbers and training effects, but I don’t….

I did 6.6 miles this morning, splitting it up in two separate runs. First was a warm-up before trying the new Kinvara 13s outside. It went OK, nothing great. Then did a quick shoe change and did a second loop. At first I could really tell they were a lower stack-height and drop. Could really feel the ground. But after about a mile I got used to it and it felt pretty normal. I think I'll like them.

Logging 2 runs. It’s been a busy couple of days and I’m falling behind. The morning temps have been really nice. I’m trying to enjoy them while they last. Also went to Pilates yesterday. It was a hard workout and my arms are sore today.6 -
@TheMrWobbly Nice to see you! Welcome back!
@tarun_yadavA Welcome back to you too! Cruises are just an insane amount of food. I have never eaten so much in my life as on a cruise. Even if you feel like you are being reasonable, it’s just way more than you eat in a normal day. Hope you had fun on your vacation!
Lovely wildflower shots @Teresa502 and @quilteryoyo!
@Scott6255 I’ll have to take a closer look at Garmin and see if I have new stuff. I’m not a huge numbers person, but I like trends.
I know a couple of people that are super into the minutiae when it comes to running data and it’s a bit overwhelming to me. But, I also know I see improvements when I train with purpose, even though you can’t do that all the time. I run mostly by feel throughout the warmer months and train over the fall and winter. The trends definitely help me to see the benefits of my training and let me see if there is something I can work on that might make a big difference.4 -

5.5 Birthday miles today. It was a beautiful morning and a great run. The weather was nice . Not too hot or cold. I saw a possum and a fox today. Planning to go out tonight for Mexican food. So far it has been a good day.

Shoes nowadays are publishing drop and stack-height data, and I'm sure it means something, but I've not yet tried to figure it out. My current shoe is my third of this model, and New Balance upgraded it a little, and it doesn't work well for me now. Even though these shoes are pretty new, I'm shopping for something else.
Between natural running, and super HOKA pillow shoes, what's the goldilocks number that people typically use? What's the differences?
