LESS Alcohol ~ JUNE 2023 ~ One Day at A Time
Replies
-
I am Dawn, I live in South Eastern British Columbia.
I joined this thread in November of 2018, a daily drinker at the time
My primary goal with drinking less is weight loss.
My usual goal is 16-20 AF days for the month,
I had 18AF days in May.
I do this diary style, I normally post the next morning.
Wednesday June 22 - AF - Planned AF for Thursday and Friday due to work stuff. I am giving out samples of Mike's Hard Friday and Saturday, extra jobs.
Thursday June 23 - AF - I will be tonight too since I am working Saturday giving out more booze. Going straight from one job to another on Friday, definitely had to stay AF. I really do okay when I have something pressing the next day. For sure planned drinks Saturday night.
Friday June 24 - AF - I felt like having drinks, but as I mentioned it is easier for me not to when I have something I don't want to be puffy for the next day. The Brand Ambassador part time job is super fun, but this perpetual motion girl is unused to standing still for 4 full hours. Weirdly standing still made my body very sore and stiff. 1:30-5:30 today giving out booze and popcorn, and then I will most likely be having a few drinks myself.
Rolling total: 13AF day out of 24 days.4 -
Hello wonderful LA community:
I’m so thankful I can check in each new day and hear how you all are doing. This LA journey is so fulfilling for me, even with all its ups and downs. MFP diary popped up today and it said “Each day is a New Beginning.” So true and encouraging to take that in.
@MissMay you lovingly built your garden and it is a shame to hear how someone else treated it so poorly. Your green thumb is at work in your new place and looks wonderful.
AF until tonight or tomorrow depending upon how our plans unfold for the day.
I intend to achieve my 20/30 AF days this month.
June goal: 20-22 AF days
2 glass limit
June stats:
AF - 15
A - 85 -
Sharing pics of my smallish raised vegetable gardens and the greenhouse my DH and I build this past spring.
I have 7 varieties of tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini, chives, and other herbs. And two Jack-O-Lanterns pumpkin vines in the rear patch that I hope will produce for my grandkids. It was so much work to build all of this new, but we are very happy with the result. I don’t miss the hand staining and painting of the lumber for the greenhouse lol.
I have to thank my DH for doing all the heavy woodwork to create these areas on our property.

Goals for JuneSelf-care and positive vibes ~ One day at a time
Zig-zag calorie count - Daily Average 1400
Success = No more than two glasses of wine per night. Bonus Points for ZERO!
Current Streak - AF = 1~
6/23 AF ~ Yipee! 💚 Friday was a long (20 hours) fast day so no alcohol. Incorporating IF supports lower alcohol intake.

@missmay ~ that's terrible that the people that bought your house didn't take care your "babies".... Maybe the next owners will resurrect it. Sorry you had to learn about it. Your new backyard looks good! Keep up the nurturing!
@Michieb125 ~ your greenhouse and backyard looks very comfortable and welcoming! Thanks for sharing.
I tried to container garden for two small trees that were given to me. I'm sad to report, they are dead!! We are in such a drought and I didn't do a good job of supplementing with water. Will try again! Most of my inside plants are good. I just replanted my over 30 year old rubber plant (it has survived 3 moves). I was a little concerned but it's been a month and it's got new blooms!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!
The Month recap to stay accountable
6/1 A ~ Husband was excited as he had been off pain meds long enough to have a cocktails. He made pomegranate sours. Tasted really strong and really sweet to me since I had not had one in quite a while.
I've got to get it through my thick head....alcohol ruins weight loss....maybe I need to get out my paper and write it 500 times...
6/2 A ~ I got nothing!
6/3 A ~
6/4 A ~ Moody today. Wine all weekend while watching Netflix shows. Bored too... can't wait for vacation! I've really got to focus on getting that "substitute" drink in my hand as soon as I get in the door.
6/5 A ~ He made pomegranate sours again .
6/6 AF ~ Yipee! 💚
Came home, immediately poured by ICE/juice! I noticed that this signals my husband to not offer me a drink, cuz for some reason, I can't say no to an offer....
It was actually a good day all around. I get on the treadmill every morning (M-F) for 30 to 45 minutes. Monday and yesterday, I went out side for lunch for an extra 30 minute walk. I was under my calorie budget and stopped eating by 8pm. Consumed 80+ ounces of water but downside, was up a lot for bathroom breaks.
6/7 AF ~ Yipee! 💚
Another good day. Treadmill + my outside walk. Low calorie day and was still in range, even though I had some Ruffles potato chips (another weakness). Consumed 64oz of water which resulted in less bathroom trips. Scale was favorable!
It's so weird. There are days when I think I just can't be AF, then when I accomplish the task, it's really not so bad🙂
Kinda like exercise! :wow:
6/8 AF ~ Yipee! 💚
Treadmill + my outside walk. Almost didn't get the extra walk in as I had a project given to me when I normally would head out but I got it in. Low calorie day, still in range, with 15 calories to spare! Water above goal!
I plan to have a drink(s) this weekend (Friday or Saturday) but I'm excited about it as it's something different that might just "work". Funny, I was looking at my saved recipes in MFP and I ran across a "Low Carb Sangria". I do not recall making this before but it's 160 calories for 17 ounces (so 3+ 5oz glasses of "wine").
4 oz cabernet (or red of choice)
1 oz vodka
4 oz of diet 7up or sprite
8 oz of peach flavored water (0 calorie)
6/9 A
6/10 A
6/11 A
I had drinks all weekend and actually looking forward to an AF day today. Friday, I had to try the low carb sangria. It wasn't bad and a nice substitute for the volume. I'm going to count this as a success day though (1 wine, 1oz vodka). Had wine on Saturday and Prosecco on Sunday.
6/12 A
6/13 AF ~ Yipee! 💚
6/14 AF ~ Yipee! 💚 It was a close one! I love how this accountability makes you really learn about yourself. I'd say that 75% of the time that I drink wine, it's because I enjoy drinking wine. The other 25% is to escape. I'm sure I knew this but it really hits home when you are trying to be AF and you see/hear the little triggers that make you want to have a nice pour!
I am generally optimist and positive about most things. My husband, not so much. My glass is half full, his glass is not only empty but it's broken.
I'll spare the details but here's the bullets:- I didn't remind him of my nail appointment (which has occurred every two weeks on Wed since the beginning of time).
- The display on his car must be going out because it was so dim he couldn't see it. We check it out, no problem found.
- His daughter wants to take him to lunch/dinner on Sun for father's day but he's sure there will be lines... Ah..they have this great thing these days...it's called make a reservation.
There was something else...and my inner soul was desiring 10 oz of wine. I even logged it to see if it fit within my calorie range. It did.... but I didn't!
The scale was even favorable this morning🙂
6/15 A ~ 🍷🍷🍷 Intentional wine yesterday. Nice evening, cooked salmon and made a southwest salad (well, actually, I dumped it out of a bag from Sam's club🙂 , that counts!)
Today I start a fast at noon that ends tomorrow morning, so no wine. Saturday and Sunday will probably have drinks then Monday is another fast so no wine.
6/16 AF ~ Yipee! 💚
🙂🙂🙂 hot damn! the scale was a beautiful thing this morning! Tomorrow will be back up I'm sure as we did a little Father's day celebrating eating out for both breakfast and dinner and a few cocktails. Tomorrow will include a 3 Mile walk. Will catch up with everyone tomorrow.
6/17 A ~ 🍷🍷🍷
A fun day yesterday.
6/18 A ~ 🍷🍷🍷
I think I had way too much fun this weekend. It was nice to just relax and the weather was perfect. Today - back on track and grabbing that caution that I threw to the wind this weekend!🙂
Today I'm supposed to be fasting to end my power week at 30 hours. I'm 14 hours in....and I'm not yet starving so fingers crossed. Tomorrow I go back to 18:6.
I'm actually trending for my second best AF month this year! If I finish "according to plan", I will tie my January best month!! All bets off for July / Vacation!!!
6/19 A ~ 🍷🍷
It was not a good idea to try for a 30 hour fast. I stopped at 21. I wasn't famished but I didn't think I would sleep well if I was super hungry - so 21 was good enough. Today back to 18:6 and planning meals and drinks for the rest of the week.🙂
6/20 A ~ 🍷
Does AAF count (almost AF )🙂 My intent was to have my ICEjuice which I did...but then I had a bit of Prosecco left from the weekend that would be flat soon, so I had a Prosecco spritzer with ICE. I'm still thrilled... that was almost like me stopping at one glass of wine, but truthfully, it was even less than one!
6/21 A ~ This >
Stopped by the grocery store for salad greens and saw Mike's No Sugar Lemonade. Of course I had to try it. 100 calories per 12 oz (24 oz can) and 4% alcohol.
It was ok. I could see drinking this on a very hot day and it would be satisfying. I always think Mike's are too sweet so this actually has some potential

Like some others have said, I need a reset. I was on vacation for a few days and actually did pretty well but not so much since I've been home. Planning AF tonight which will bring me to 12 AF/24 which overall is not bad. I am going to try get back to running, plan to do short intervals tomorrow and work my way up from there.4

@MissMay I’m so sorry! You had such a gorgeous garden. I feel your pain. The new owners of our old house took down a beautiful oak that shaded the front of the house, took out our river birches, and tore down the (expensive!) fenced in garden. Honestly sometimes it’s better to not look!
@Michieb125 beautiful planting bed!
@itladyee how you kept that plant alive for 30 years is beyond me! It’s really pretty!
I bought a pretty new yoga mat, can’t wait until it gets here. I had 1/2 glass more than planned last night, but I’m ok with that. My weight is up today but it’s temporary- I had a pickle with my delicious Reuben sandwich from this awesome Jewish deli. Something about the salt makes me retain water but Totally worth it! Water weight will be gone tomorrow. Not worried.
Off to take the dog for a walk. Have a great day everyone!
3 -
@Michieb125 - I love how you did the corners on your raised beds! Great idea.
@dawnbgethealthy - standing still is such a pain and hard to do ... no wonder your muscles are tired.
@MissMay - Oh your lovely garden back in Maine ... I'm sorry to hear this. Your new small plot gardening is shaping up! Congrats on DH's new daytime job! Is there a time limit on the driving situation or was his licensed pulled for life?
@Womona - I hear you!! "... sucked down the social media rabbit hole lately (Reddit) and don’t want to waste my days. Reading a book for hours, totally cool. Scrolling social media? I literally feel my brain atrophying!" ... I'm trying to limit my time on the computer and phone as well. Very hard habit to break!!

June accountability: 5 days AF
Alcohol: 19 days (? drinks)
Days over 2 glasses: 11 on vacation + 2 back at home
Goal: 10 AF days this month
Vacation! Goal: Enjoy alcohol responsibility and not have a hangover! Try some mocktails . Plus drink more water between drinks throughout the day!
6/24 - AF - tasted and passed on the watermelon margaritas. They were good but it was hot outside for my granddaughter's first birthday so I drank LOTS of water instead.
5 -
Went on a long walk yesterday and then ran errands including a Sam’s club trip. Spent the rest of the day with DH doing some fun travel planning for fall. After a great day, I decided to have 2 glasses of rose wine last night…..and then I opened a mini of Prosecco - then another. I haven’t done this in almost 5 months.
Today I see this 2+2 used to be an old habit and I do not wish to resurrect it no matter how much I rationalize how ‘light’ my choices were. The unnecessary calories consumed and A were excessive for my personal goals. I am thankful for awareness, give myself grace and have a solid plan in place to achieve June AF goals this week.
Thanks for listening……countdown to July!
June goal: 20-22 AF days

There will be wine. But at 14.99 a pop, there won’t be much!

Been off-track this week, and the scale is really showing it. My goal is to end this month with more AF over A days... or at least 50/50.5 -
I'm way behind on this thread! With summer, everyone is doing so much!
Thought I'd quick post a pick from this weekend of my wife and me backpacking.
She's down 120 lbs from 2 years ago. I'm down 25 lbs from 3 months ago.
She's 51 years old. I'm 55.

Sunday June 25 - Drinks. Not planned, but no regrets. Got lots done in the yard, took a break from the sun when the sweat was dripping into my eyes and had a blended Gin cocktail. Another drink several hours later. Geez, the month is coming to an end, I had better get at least 3 more AF days!

Since retiring from a Corporate position a few years ago, one of my favorite days of the week is now Sunday. It’s my day to recenter from the past week and pause for both spiritual fulfillment and fun before a new week begins. My DH and I went to church, out to lunch, and took a long walk in the rolling hills together. I feel so fortunate we found each other over 20 years ago. In addition, he stopped all drinking eight years ago by his own personal choice and I really respect him for that.
AF until Thursday or Friday and will make my June goal of 20/30 AF days.

Awesome pix of you people improving your lives - whether weight loss or gardening what matters is we're actively engaged with self improvement and enhancing our happiness every day.
I so feel for you @MissMay and experienced so much grief over my old house since I had to go back to see what the new owners did to it, and it wasn't pretty. They painted it the color of poop and the yard is a mess. I can't go back now. I have to look forward and create new beginnings.
I am doing better overall, getting more self-control and I have upped my running. Now at 10 miles a week plus 7-8 miles walking and a couple of weight workouts. But today I had 2 mini-Korbel champagnes. I guess I bought them because I just felt like I needed a mood lift at dinner-time. I probably need a happier life.8 -
Accountability check in-
Yikes sorry I have no idea why I wrote the number I did for AF the other day(24).. So I will update.
Alcohol drinks 6 days
No Alcohol 20 days
Gary such a beautiful picture of you and you wife. Congrats to you both on the weight loss. She lost an entire person in her journey. Happy hiking!
@globalhiker your ponder about why you bought the minis I can resonate with. All the advertising as to alcohol making our lives better in everyway does not help. Nice to hear your running again.
@dawnbgethealthy did I miss a post of yours? Are you selling your house( in reference to the appraisal)? If so please go buy my old house the gardens would LOVE YOU!
4th of July next week, WOW can't believe it. The past few weeks have been tragic around my area. To many people on vacation thinking they dont need to abide the red flags on our beaches( taken out by rip tides and drowned) or they are driving like maniacs on the already dangerous streets.
I am looking forward to the day off (July 4th)with my husband, this area is extremely military with all the bases. The Blue Angels are less than 2 miles from my house. They fly over more often than hummingbirds. I feel very proud to be a part of the community.
Have a great Tuesday group!7 -
@globalhiker
I am really happy that you are back to running all of the time. Pure freedom?
You say that you probably need a happier life, I believe that you are working on that, and writing it down will keep that in the forefront of your mind. Choose happiness?
We are LA here, a piccolo of champagne is a nice thing to have once in awhile I think.
In fact, I may put one in the fridge (I buy them in 3-packs) for after my home appraisal today.
@MissMay
I am doing a re-fi to consolidate mountains of debt and start fresh, hence the last step, the home appraisal.
I just had to pay my property taxes yesterday, ouch.
As much as I love love love the autonomy of living on my own, home ownership and upkeep is very expensive. I will see where I am at in August and may consider taking in a tenant although I really don't want to. I will have 3 jobs during that time, but scale back to 2 jobs 6 days a week from September on. I think/hope that without having to pay exorbitant interest anymore that I can do it without having somebody else living in my space. We'll see.
Haha, I would wreck your old gardens with my junky way of gardening, and I would be apoplectic with the deer eating all of the hard work.
@Michieb125
I adore what you have in your backyard. So beautiful!
I love what you say about your Sundays. Saturdays are normally my day to do that even though I have went to work for quite of few of them recently. I get both Saturday and Sunday off coming up for the first time in awhile, I am going to keep in mind what you say about using that to re-centre.
@itladyee
How fun to go to a baseball game!!!2 -

Monday June 26 - AF - I just keep cleaning and cleaning before my home appraisal. I have to just stop now and say that is enough. Foregoing getting the toothbrushes out for the baseboards lol, I have run out of time. Planned drinks for tonight after work and the appraisal. Planned AF Wednesday and Thursday. Right down to the wire for my 16 this month, but I will get there.

Went on a short trip with the family- enjoyed some cocktails and wine but didn't go crazy (it helps when they are so expensive lol)7

Hello everyone,
Again I was/am playing catch up but wanted to let you know I did read all the posts
Love the garden pictures! So sad about your ole homestead @MissMay
We are in the middle of our interior home being painted. Well most areas, I opted out of the hall closet and laundry room LOL. It is looking brighter already. Tomorrow they deliver a riding mower and the plumber will be here to install a gas line for the kitchen. Yeah then I can buy my gas stove and new appliances.
We bought the house with the appliances they had but we found they are lower end and not in the best of shape. Cosmetic wise look good, performance...not so much. So we might as well get what we want now while we are still in this spending mood.
Alcohol wise doing 'fair' more A days then non right now but again I am no where close to what I was consuming 2 years or even 1 year ago. I feel like once we start to get more into a routine I will be able to walk away easier??? fingers and will power crossed.
hope to check in again before the new month5 -
Since retiring, I became an avid walker and hiker, and weaved in Pilates and yoga home videos now and then. I’m excited I joined a well established gym yesterday in which I have been eyeing for while. It is close by, has a robust class schedule with yoga, Pilates, and barre in addition to all the standard equipment and aqua fit. Looking forward to popping in and out a couple of times a week to continue my body recomposition. This year has been about leaning out with weight loss, becoming stronger and reducing health risks as I get older.
Sending encouragement to those who need it. We can find our way with LA because we have this fantastic group (thanks to @MissMay).

I want to introduce myself. I went two years sober, started CrossFit, lost 14 pounds, and felt the strongest I’ve felt in my life. I started drinking again in November 2022, slowly at first, now daily, as I was before. I believe I have Alcohol Use Disorder and have struggled to meet people that can relate to my drinking patterns. I’ve regained all my weight because alcohol makes me feel despondent and apathetic about health and food. I now want to regain control over my alcohol use and health, but it’s difficult. If anyone is in the Tucson area, I would love a buddy! Thanks for the support,9
-
Welcome @annjuodakis6276, it's perfect how you are so open and honest about yourself. What you write here matters because the next day you may read it again and this will help direct your mind. At least, this is how this forum helped me. This is a place for self-improvement and you will find many buddies.
@dawnbgethealthy I likely missed this, but are you planning to move, and if so, where? Sending my good wishes and hugs for you. Life change is good.
This aside, every 5 years or so, life likes to throw a hard curveball at me and I am there now. My life is not great by any means and I want to spare you the details. I wish to focus on making each day better - less or no alcohol, staying away from toxic people, and really focusing on re-directing my energies to what makes me happy which is lifting myself up (I learned I need to actively do this myself) and then being able to lift others.
7 -
Welcome @annjuodakis6276!! I hear ya, I used to be so much better about racking up AF days. It’s very easy to go from having one occasionally to having a drink daily- whether it’s out of habit or a need to escape something. I think you’ll find a lot of support with this gang.
@globalhiker big hug to you, whatever is going on in your life!
I poured myself a glass of wine at dinner, and really really wanted another, but I
resisted. My weight would come down faster if I just cut out the alcohol, and yet, that wine is so tasty! Ugh.5 -
@globalhiker
No, not moving, just trying to do a re-fi.
It sounds like you are really going through something right now.
Big hugs!!!2 -

@annjuodakis6276 WELCOME to our LESS Alcohol group.
The evil circle pattern of alcohol is what you described. It gives us the illusion that after we work so hard to meet our fitness and health goals, it says "hey one little drink won't hurt".
We have all been here, and to tell the truth the devil still sits on my shoulders poking me with his pointed spear telling me to have another(for him)👹
We have a great intro on page one with tips on how to help though this journey. But the best way is to get in here and communicate.3
