WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JUNE 2023

Today I went to my sisters little country Presbyterian church. Last time I stepped into a church service was in 1999, so I was a bit out of my normal wheelhouse. The last was a Lutheran service so the group sayings were a wee bit different today. It was nice for my soul though. I was able to play the piano in the chapel part when everyone was in the community room eating cups of strawberry shortcakes.💖
My sisters sons family came over at 4 pm. We had to take out the rest of the boxes out of the horse trailer. Then I stayed with the kids while sister, son and daughter in law moved boxes out of the second storage unit. Then they came back and relaxed, then left the kids. Their mom is a teacher so is organizing her room up. So sister is watching the three granddaughters until Tuesday afternoon like last week. Unfortunately we need the truck with all the boxes from the storage unit out of my sisters truck because we're going out to breakfast tomorrow. So of course my sister and I have to empty out the truck. Why her son and daughter in law didn't just do that when they came back is beyond me. Its amazing how you can lift about fifteen heavy boxes from one place to the other when you're kinda annoyed at the situation.

10. Bring joy to others by doing something kind for them. Minutes blank to R.
11. Eat good food that makes you happy and really savor it. General Tso’s chicken with snap peas, brown rice and AF beer.
Joe told me the nice checkout lady cautioned against grapefruit since he’s on heart medicine and suggested the Keto diet. My gratitude is somewhat tainted by resentment that he never accepts my food choice suggestions. “grass fed meat in moderation, pasture raised eggs, organic everything possible, less prepared foods” That’s not true, he does thank me for the fresh vegetables, fruits and salads I prep for him. So just be thankful, Barbara, that he’s now reading nutrition labels and rejecting everything with added sugar. I AM thankful. Honest!
Welcome @bethaboo2409 ! What kind of dog is Lulu?
Katla hooray for robins!
Welcome home pip! Fingers X’d for Kirby’s MRI.
Kim great insights and suggestions for Annnie,
Tracey yours to Debbie. Glad for your great day with the grands.
Karen, wow, lunch with Dr. Fierro!
Michele ow! Painful as they can be, if a root canal can save the tooth that would be my choice.
Annie could you leave a sticky note where the ladder is saying something like “neighbor needed to borrow ladder, will return later”? Understand how frustrating it is that he accepts no input. What Machka said about a medical professional advising your Dad. Sometimes men will not listen to a trusted female but will to a respected male. You are in a very very hard place.
Rebecca your sister IS too nice. If the kids wanted some of the stuff they should have helped with the work. Just my two cents.
Rita stopped at Mars on the way? I quit using check registers after I’d kept a spreadsheet for a couple of months. Have two, one for reconciling checks with banks, and one for tracking ALL expenses whether check, credit card or cash.
Lisa ((hugs)) Only 51. Must have been a shock.
Sue Worms?!? :noway:  Oh h@[[ no!!!

Regarding balancing chequebooks etc. ... I think I've said this before ...
The last time I balanced a chequebook was in my early 20s. I'm pretty sure I haven't done it sine 1990 ... 33 years.
The last time used a cheque was likely late 2008 or early 2009 ... 14-ish years. And it was such a big relief to never have to do that again!!
Co-incidentally, this article was published on June 7 ... I actually thought they'd already been phased out!
Cheques will be phased out by 2030 as mobile wallet use sky-rockets
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-07/australian-government-to-phase-out-cheques-by-2030/102449560
Why phase out cheques?
Because cheques only account for only 0.2 per cent of all payments, according to figures from an Australian Banking Association (ABA) report.
Cheque payments are also more expensive to process compared to other payment types — and it's been that way for some time.
...
You'll notice a decline in cash and cheque use. But there was an increase in all other payment types.
Anyway, I have a spreadsheet with the following columns plus Item, Total and Comment for every expenditure, and in that way, I know what's coming up and whether a month will have a lot of expenses or not.

Tracey in Edmonton
My husband had his first flat at about 11 km into the ride ... he changed the tube and we carried on.
He had his second flat at about 35 km. He changed the tube ... but they were having trouble pumping it up and then realised, it was going flat.
So he put on a new tyre and tube which should have solved the problem ... but that tube went flat.
We were all out of tubes by that point, so the friend we were cycling with cycled to where we started and drove back to pick up my husband and his bicycle.
I stayed with my husband and we walked until the friend came back. Then I cycled the rest of the way in.
If it had been just the two of us, I would have cycled to the start and driven the van back.

1. Decide to look for what’s good every day this month.
I have been enjoying coding during the first 2 days of the month. That's been really good.
Also the 25 flights of stairs a day.
2. Say positive things in your conversations with others.
Chatted with a work friend about our gardens first thing this morning.
Smiled and thanked people as usual.
BTW - thanking the bus driver at the end of a trip is a thing here.
3. Re-frame a worry and try to find a helpful way to think about it.
Where do I even start? A single worry?
There are so many worries rumbling away in the background but I try not to think about them or dwell on them.
I try to focus on the good days or even good moments.
4. Take a photo of something that brings you joy and share it.

My job
The place we live

Every day!

Climb, climb, climb, climb! This week I have climbed 109 flights of 20 stairs.
Plus walking.
8. Find joy in music: sing, play, dance, listen or share.
I listen to ABC Classic at work ... classical and related music. This week, the 10 am - 1 pm program has been featuring George Gershwin and I have been loving it!
9. Ask a friend what made them happy recently.
My husband and his bees and garden and bicycles.
10. Bring joy to others by doing something kind for them.
Told a kid I liked his sunglasses?
Told a friend that he was welcome to come cycling with us.
11. Eat good food that makes you happy and really savor it.
I was so hungry by the time we got back after the bicycle ride, just about any food would have made me happy. I started with popcorn.
12. Write a gratitude letter to thank someone.
I don't write letters.
Emails ... but not letters.

Today I am able to leave my support off, (6 weeks) unless there is something specific I might want it for, like running. (Scared of tripping again?) I'm not running right now until I'm sure my thigh is thoroughly healed. I might put it back on if I'm achey for a while.
New set of exercises to do. I'm being good about doing them.
We are going to start putting outdoor wear into a suitcase tomorrow. The cleaner is coming today, so won't start yet. We have decided to pack the suitcases downstairs, so as to avoid having to drag and bump them down the stairs when full. Obviously, I can't help this year, and DH is nervous about it. We will have to take clothes for all weathers! Hats, gloves fleeces, anoraks, etc. Good job there is no weight restriction. We don't have to carry them again, once they are in the hall. We take three big suitcases and a personal bag each. Plus my handbag (purse). Last time we were in the Arctic, in Sweden, it was a heatwave and forest fires, so there's no predicting. Iceland was really cold for one day. Svarlbard was cold., but sunny. So an all-weather pack.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx6 -
Barbara,
Yes, the lunch was a wonderful time; Marcella Fierro doesn’t seem to age at all; she is a fellow crone for sure. Also saw another dear old friend who I haven’t seen in years and years. We have been invited to join them for lunch every month from now on, so we are super looking forward to it.

I'm sorry for your loss, Lisa. What a tragic situation.
Kim, it's good to hear you sounding like your self again.
Karen, "crone" lol
Katla, I'm so happy that you and hubby are able to get out for walks.
I've been reading along, but it's early, and I don't remember what else I wanted to comment on.
I did some work in the garden this weekend. We have weekly yard people, which makes it more fun to just plant flowers and decorate, without having to worry about mowing or weeding.
Bone scan was also clear. Mammogram tonight after work. Oncologist tomorrow morning.
Much love to all.

That was my first thought too, Ginny. Don't know if I would even want to continue to "help out" in a job where they would pull that kind of stuff, Debbie. Good luck to DH. I'm sorry he has to deal with those kind of people.
So sorry, Lisa. 51 is too young.
WOOHOO ALLIE!!! That's wonderful for Tracy, Kyle, Myles, YOU! Yes, you will miss him, but now you get to BE GrandMallie! I know it was tough for me when the grands left. We had Lacy and Kolten living here until he was three and then Caddie was here for eight months. Caddie and Hunter were here during CV when Anne found work. You'll get used to it though. I love having the kids now... on a short-term basis.

It's Monday morning at my house
Karen you know I am SO excited that you are having a monthly lunch with Marcella Fierro. And I admit, a bit jealous, lol. Please let us know if you hear some juicy forensic pathology story
I was able to download "A World of Curiosities" yesterday. It was the only one readily available at the library. I'm over half way through it. After having watched the series, I can better envision what Gamache might look like and the area. Anyhow, it works for me. I know the series took liberties with the storyline and characters but that's OK.
Allie - I'm glad, for your sake, that Miles will be able to attend daycare earlier than the beginning of next year. I'm sure you'll be able to see him a lot. Also glad that Carmine has Seth in her life. Hope your computer is A-OK. In my experience, sometimes these computer whizzes get everything up to snuff but don't take into consideration that we mere mortals need some guidance on how to navigate changes.
Flea - Thrilled to hear your "stable" report. In fact, I've become satisfied with "stable" in most areas of my life. By the way, a good friend of mine and his wife attended the same concert you and your DH went to in Bend. You probably sat beside Jerry and Annette, lol.
Betsy - safe travels!
Lisa - what a shame to hear about your young friend. So sorry modern medicine couldn't pull him out of it. Thoughts and prayers for the family. I bet your sunblock curtains will help a lot.
Barbara - I enjoy reading about Joe's developing interest in health. I can't change the past but I think DH might have lasted longer and been happier if he would have eaten better.
Ginny - I'll be anxious to hear how your visits to communities turn out. So far I think Karen's sounds nifty. There's one in our community with a long waiting list, I'm not ready to move yet and might not be for years. But it's fun to look and keep on top of prices for these places. (YIKES!)
I ran across this regarding talking and alzheimer's:
I'm not sure it's true - I've known people with dementia who live in environments with plenty of opportunity to talk. But I thought it made excellent points about the benefits of talking - stimulates our brains, helps our breathing, helps relieve stress. Nothing wrong with that.
And that's what got me thinking about being isolated. Only talking to the dog, cat and chickens is pretty one-way. The planning committee in my head helps some, but I really miss the practical advice DH would give me. What should we do about the _______ (roof, car, weeds, etc.) Should I be worrying about it or is it no big deal? 99% of the time he had a good response. I'm lucky to have Roger across the street who is helpful. The sunshine and good weather seem to brighten up my outlook, may have to consider actually communicating more with humans this winter.
Debbie - So good to see Destiny smiling. Your parents live in a beautiful area near the ocean. When we first moved here to WA State in 1977, island and ocean front property wasn't desirable. We could have picked up a nice lot for very little, if we'd have had the money to spare and the desire to take a ferry every time we wanted to go there. This was before Microsoft and other tech companies made overnight millionaires.
Beaches: When I was a teen in Northern Indiana, the beach hot spot was Indiana Dunes on the tip of Lake Michigan, south of where Kelly lives. Huge sandy beach and very, very high sandy dunes to climb. It might as well have been an ocean. I've dipped my toes in both the Atlantic (Chesapeake Bay) and the Pacific (various Washington beaches). Not sure I could live there full time because of the wind, but I love the energy there.
Tracking expenses: I keep an Excel spreadsheet loosely modeled after Quickbooks with columns for budget items to keep track of how much I'm spending for food, utilities, car expense, taxes, insurances, etc. I'm not real strict about adhering but it's been a wake-up call when I get too busy with Amazon, lol. I rarely write checks, sometimes pay cash and sometimes use the credit card. So this spreadsheet pulls all expenses together.
It's going to be a warm sunny day, so mowing the front yard is on the agenda - hopefully after lunch. I have Nellybelle gassed up and ready for action as soon as the dew dries the grass. And dandelions.
Have a great week!

Lisa ... very sorry to hear about the loss of a friend. 51 is too young.
Machka ... I prefer emails, but there is something special about receiving a letter.
Rita ... I think your point about the checkbook register was not so much about using checks, but keeping detailed records of what you're spending. My excel spreadsheet is set up to note everything we do and I color code lines and items. I do some convoluted machinations with the spreadsheet that aren't worth explaining ... but even purchases on the credit card are marked as individual debits on my spreadsheet so that when I go to pay the credit bill, the money is there to pay in full. It helps me to be very detailed now that we're on a fixed budget. I want to know where every penny goes and how many pennies are available.
My weed trimmer broke this weekend and the replacement part is not available. Did some searching online and found a youtube video that showed how you could swap out another brand's head with a few modifications. $20 is a lot less than a new trimmer! My husband plans to take care of it for me, but I think I could do it if I had to.
Slow and steady rain here today near Buffalo. We so need this rain. Can almost see things green up as it's coming down.
Husband and I went to find local strawberries and there were none! All of the u-pick sites we were familiar with no longer exist and the one market that carries local produce only had shipped in berries. What's up with that? I did see local rhubarb though and bought some to make a pie. Sticker shock at the register. A little over 2 pounds was over $11.00... 4.99 a pound! The pie was delicious and I froze enough for another. Next week we'll head over to one of the local farmer's markets.

Lanette, interesting article about talking and Alzheimer’s. I agree with you. I’m not sure I agree. What I have noticed though, is a correlation between memory failing and withdrawing from conversation. As in, the desire to have conversation diminishes because of the fear of being caught in a memory lapse.
Beth, the same thought occurred to me regarding checkbooks and monitoring your spending. Regardless of whether you write checks or use other payment methods, you either write these things down and know your bank balance or you don’t. I don’t like relying on the bank to tell me how much money I have available for spending. I like to keep these records for myself. It doesn’t matter if it’s a paper and pencil register or a spreadsheet. If you keep it, you keep it.
Lisa, hugs, my dear, on the loss of your friend.
I had not measured myself in a while, so I decided to do it this morning. I was shocked to see I had lost 8 lbs and 5 inches since Jan 1.7 -

If his store manager would get transferred, quit, retire, etc it isn't a bad place for him to work. He knows the job better than most that are there. It is only a 6 min drive from the house. Before the restrictions were put back in place , he was making his own schedule pretty much. She left him alone for the most part but for some reason this past week she started going after him again.

Best,

The fudge is easy to make and is really good. I use both peanut butter powder and peanut butter mixed with the melted chocolate and sweetened condensed milk. I am good as long as I dont try the first piece. After that, I grab just one piece but do that when ever I see it if I leave it in the kitchen.
YES it is amazing to have the special friendship with former hubby. We had no contact for 20 yrs and now we talk daily. Sometimes they are serious conversations, some are just talking about old times(we met when I was in 7th grade and he in 9th-we were each other's first on everything just about), some times we talk about what we made for dinner, swap recipes and ideas, but always check in with each other. He talks with me, to me, a real two way conversation. DH tends to talk AT me but not really listen or let me have an opinion without him thinking I am starting an argument.
Our spouses know we talk to each other. They know this will not change. They just don't know how often we talk.

PS.. How many of you use check registers to keep track of your spending? I’ve been using one the bank gave me and ordered some bigger ones from Amazon. So far I like getting back to the old way. Keeps me closer to my budget and ensures the bills get paid!
RVRita
I don't use the bank checkbook register except for writing down check numbers and amounts as they're used (which are very few) ... no running balance or anything. Instead I use an excel spreadsheet that my husband fabricated for me and I love it.
Beth
Yep, Excel.
And a bills account. Money for bills goes in there automatically. Bills are paid automatically.
M in Oz
I use a spreadsheet as well for monthly budgeting, but I can’t log as I spend so am finding the ‘old fashioned’ way to be better for me. I keep a running total as well. Just digital and I tend to overspend because I don’t know exactly how much I have to spend.

1. Decide to look for what’s good every day this month. Started with friendly people.
2. Say positive things in your conversations with others. I will try, but people annoy me.
3. Re-frame a worry and try to find a helpful way to think about it. This will be about my son. Not sure how to re-frame it but will find a way today. I must realize he is a full grown man and in charge of his own life.

Hello to all.
I've been "busy," I guess. Thought of commenting on something time to time and then got distracted.
Allie-I'm happy to hear they found a daycare for Miles. You will all be happier, I think.
Lisa-So sorry to hear of your friend. Heartbreaking.
Debbie-Sad for Destiny, but that girl is such a trooper.
Kim-So glad your situation is better. You are such a good person for doing that for your mother.
Annie-You are in a difficult situation. I remember hearing of my father going through similar situations with my grandfather. He had to be creative about things too. Now, my father does some dumb things sometimes, but he is married and his wife has to scold him. Good luck.
Barbie-Sorry to hear of Jake's results. Hugs.
Welcome to the new ladies. I know there are a few of you. I look forward to getting to know you.
I know I missed the where are you from convo. I grew up in Kansas and moved to California at 20. Lived in the Seattle area for a while, Texas for a short stint, and then back to California. Haven't left again to live anywhere, but we travel a lot and that helps with my boredom of living here. Hopefully, we will move somewhere else, but I'm not counting on it.
Beaches-I know I take the ones near me for granted. They're about a 15 minute drive away. I've been to/across many on our travels. We are not "beach people." My vacation planning never includes beach time, but we often walk on them, especially if there is something special to see, such as the scarlet macaws that lived on one in Costa Rica.
That said, Waikiki in Oahu, Hawaii, still sticks in my memory as one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen. That was many years ago, however. It very well may not be now. I also loved one in Crete that we went to. We shared it with goats and it took a fair amount of boulder scrambling to get to, but the Mediterranean was so blue that it was amazing to look at.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the goats eat the beachgoers' food and pee on their blankets when they were swimming. We never left our spot unoccupied. (Pictures in spoiler). Beaches are so different. The beach we were going to.
How we had to get there.
Once we got there.
This below is near us and we walk or run on it sometimes. It's rare that it's completely empty, but this was probably a weekday and not in the summer.
The last couple of weeks were busy. I worked at a conference for a week and spent a lot of time before that cleaning my house. We had guests arrive while I was at the conference and they stayed in our house. Then we all went to Mexico for the weekend to the wine region. It was a nice weekend. I'm just getting caught up with work and trying to get back into an exercise routine. So, that's what I'm going to do right now.
Enjoy your week!
