Went into three paragraphs of my own theories about all this and then realized it was boring as all get out. To shorten it considerably, U.S. workers began something the media labeled "quiet quitting," which was a complete misnomer, during the pandemic. It actually sounds much like your work culture--a trend to give the company eight hours a day and do the job you're hired for and no more, stop overworking and overachieving. I have hope that the next generation will figure out the situation better than we ever did. I was as wrapped up as anyone else in the culture. I figured out once that the unpaid two or three hours I went in early every day (often including weekends) dropped my hourly wage by nearly half, in the end. Not so smart.Snowflake1968 wrote: »Machka - I find here that many don’t take their allotted time off either. I didn’t for a long time, but then started using mine regularly.
For the last couple of years I’ve only taken my time as a day or a few days at a time. I think moving forward I need to use 1 week as a whole week and the other week as a day here and there thing.
One thing I’m very upset about is I would be at 4 weeks vacation next year.
Lisa - I had a discussion today with my daughter (34) about this “quiet quitting” thing. She says her generation calls it “Acting your wage”. I hope this next generation makes some changes and they enjoy life more than we did. As she said though, trying to navigate a system that is in the midst of such a massive change is not the place to be when you’re just trying to work and have a family.

Tracey ... I hope something works out that you could get your 4 weeks.
For interest, and completeness, here are a couple articles about the leave subject.
Why Americans are bad at taking time off, and how to get better at it
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/04/07/why-americans-dont-take-time-off-work/
Why Do Almost Half of Americans Leave Paid Time Off on the Table?
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/27/business/dealbook/unused-paid-time-off.html
I have always taken all my leave off and have occasionally gone for unpaid leave as well. For several years I worked on contract jobs, and I would be sure to include a month's leave into the contract in one way or another.
Now that I'm in Australia, I get 4 weeks annual leave plus I've opted into a Purchased Leave program to give me an extra 10 days leave plus stat holidays, of course. And believe me, I take it all! In October, I get Long Service Leave for being with the organisation for 10 years. That'll be 3 months of leave ... and I have plans for it.
Incidentally, "leave" means "vacation".
I see the following meme come up in FB every so often and I'm puzzled (I suppose) by it.
1. Does that mean I enjoy my work so much I don't take a vacation ... like the articles above?
2. Does that mean that I've retired so every day is a vacation?
Personally, I don't mind my work and I know there's a place for it in my life, but I've built a life that needs and includes a whole lot of leave (vacation time).
As for the "quiet quitting" and the work culture in many places here in Australia ...
There is (and has been for a while) a big emphasis on just working during working hours. However, we are encouraged to achieve things and to be engaged during those working hours. We're encouraged to meet the expected outcomes of our band level ... or more.
For the last few years, I was producing at 2 to 3 band levels higher than what I was being paid. Thankfully, I've finally moved up to the band level where I've been working.
But in an interview, if we're asked: "If you discover you've got a huge workload and then something more comes in, how would you handle it?" ...
... the wrong answer is, "I would be happy to work extra hours to see that it gets done."

Rebecca: Ouch! Hope you’re back on your feet soon.
It’s a dull damp day here, but I have lots to do indoors. I will go to our local shops later.

Machka-thanks for sharing links but couldn't read because they are subscription or ask for email. My vacation status:I get 5 weeks of leave per year plus 14 paid holidays (and then sick leave on top of that). We can keep 15 weeks (3 years) of vacation on the books-I am frequently in danger of losing (which is why I took off a few hours on Friday). I don't take it unless I have something I want to do but have been bad at that the first half of this year. I do find taking the occasion day or few hours mid week are good for me. I will knock off some time with trip to Arizona in a week. We are through one of our busiest times so in second half I will get more options for time off. Also-getting to keep a large balance that you get paid for when you leave is a nice savings account also.Allie-glad to hear appointment is scheduled and not too far out. It is much scarier if they need to see you immediately!
Rebecca-hope you recover well from fall. Those as so scary. At least it was at end of your trip and not in the beginning.
Rita-those tomatoes are gorgeous! They would make a great in-person birthday present!
Annie-cheering you on in the sister challenge.
Pip-congrats on 10 minute mile run. I get excited when I walk a 20 minute mile!
Spending Saturday and Sunday taking stuff to goodwill (and making up more), need to do an Amazon return to UPS store. Sorting papers out of home office. Kitchen an living area I have been keeping up on and I feel more relaxed in them. Will start working on packing for trip-fly out next Sunday. Traveling light so need to think through choices. Also, that will keep me from being rushed next Saturday at the last minute.
Sun is coming up-going to go get ready to start day with walk. 3 miles today since it is weekend.
Take care all,

Just a gentle reminder to those who are new. We are glad you are here! Please note that, as a group, it was decided long, long ago that we don't put religion or politics into the mix. By refraining from politics and religion, we can all stay supportive and kind to each other regardless, and without starting interactions on the thread that don't further our aims for a healthy life. Many of us have been with this thread for years, some for over a decade, and it has lasted so long because of leaving those two things off the table.
Warmest regards,

Interesting and odd you can't get into the links. They're both US newspapers and for whatever reason, I can get into them! Oh well, I'm sure you can google the article titles and find something you can access if you're interested.
I understand the end of employment pay out benefit of not taking leave.
But for me, when I take time off ...
-- my physical health improves because I exercise more.
-- my mental health improves because I get away from the computer because I'm often outside exercising and/or working in the garden. It also gives me time to get things done from my To Do list, which improves my outlook on things.
-- my stress situation improves because exercise and getting things done gives me a sense of accomplishment and slowly but surely makes things better.
-- I get a whole lot more sleep.
-- I have the opportunity to do relaxing things like reading and colouring.
-- I rarely get hot flashes, compared to when I am at work. At work, I'll go into a hot flash every couple hours. At home, I might have one or two a day.
-- my tinnitus quiets a bit.
-- my headaches reduce.
As an aside, in my husband's and my most recent Brain Injury Peer Group meeting, we had a doctor of neurology talk to us about neuroplasticity. A badly injured brain will never fully recover (as in my husband's case) but through neuroplasticity, it can rewire somewhat and the injury can improve somewhat.
Toward the end of her talk, she gave us a list of things that improve neuroplasticity in people with brain injury ... and those without brain injury as well.
The first thing on her list was ...
Travel.
Seeing new things, doing new things goes a long way toward rewiring the brain.
After that came things like learning a new language, learning to play an instrument, doing crosswords, etc.

Today's big adventure will be making a trip to Costco. It has been about two months and some supplies are dwindling especially chicken which we use for making batches of favorite foods to freeze and have available for meals. Jake makes chicken with bbq sauce and mole and I make chicken with peanut and coconut milk sauce, chicken soup, and baked chicken to add to Alfredo sauce or just serve along with a veggie. We buy a few other things that we are able to use in larger quantities. We will get there at 9:15 so we'll be in line to go in as soon as they open the doors usually before 9:30. We shop from a list so we are in and out by 9:45.
Thanks to all of Jake's help this year, I have far less yard work so I don't have to worry about dodging the sun in the afternoon.
Annie, I admire your ability to juggle your exercise and parent care especially the part where you have to make different meals for them than for yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back from me.
Heather, best wishes for successful packing and a cruise that is filled with joy.
Betsy, Glad your trip turned out well. Getting home is always good, too.
Tracey, This time off can be a good time for you to increase your spiritual practices and reading uplifting or spiritual stuff to nurture yourself.

Morning ladies
Well I slept and slept and slept I needed it
Tracey- Doris was my bonus mom,my mom was everyone elses bonus mom
My mom, never told me about anything, took me out of sex ed,never told me about my period so that was a shock at 14 when I got it..
I didn't want to spend time with my parent's at that age and I was bad..
Because my mom was I guess drinking at that time ,she wasn't paying attention to what we were doing..
From the time I was 14 to the time I was 18 or so I did alot I wasn't proud of.. and if I went to a bar and my friends left me. Bless my dad,i could call him and he would pick me up no questions asked
I pray that Carmine will get through it all..
Well im going to hop in the shower in a bit.. Dan will be staying overnight and taking him to the airport in the morning .flying out to LA and staying in anehiem and going to Vidcon and Disneyland..
Carmine is camping with Seth's family down at the beach this weekend5 -
Rebecca - Your poor feet! Hope you're healing fast, glad nothing was broken...
Heather - As always, looking forward to living your glamorous cruise life vicariously through you. My daughter firmly believes that birthdays and holidays are flexible things, celebrated on the day of her choice, and it's a good way to be able to shift things around so you can enjoy them when you choose. Sounds like a good plan for getting together with your sister-in-law in July.
Betsy - Glad you're home safe and sound, and that first night back in your own bed after a trip is always wonderful. It sounds like you picked the perfect place to spread Jack's ashes, honoring his family and his life.
Speaking of leave/vacation, Corey's taking Monday and Tuesday off--while Monday may be a federal holiday, the company he works for only has four paid holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Independence Day. He's just passed his five-year mark with them, so is now entitled to three weeks' vacation. They're about to move into their busiest season, so he's taking time now, and will probably wait and take more in the fall and winter. Since he's the only one who can fix things, and the crews literally break equipment daily, summer is his busiest time.
What's funny to me is, he didn't take his birthday (next Wednesday) off, just the two days before. The only thing he's asked for is a big slice of brownie with icing, which I will happily make for him tomorrow, which is Father's Day. Our 14th anniversary is six days after his birthday - I wouldn't marry him until he turned 40.
It's already 72 outside at 8:30am, and warming up fast. Corey's up and around and starting his day, so I think I'll join him. Folding laundry can wait.
Much love,

Just woken up from a nap.
Got a bit more sorted, including my gorgeous new makeup bag. I like a place for everything, and everything in its place, and this has pockets!
One of the reasons I am pacing myself is that we have three floors in our house, I have a wrist injury, and a thigh strain. Slowly does it.
Next job - tops. For all weathers! Arctic and heatwave. And smart and normal. I often wear a dressier top for dinner. I'm just putting things on the spare bed at this point.
I.was a bit bothered about wearing the exact same outfit for the three formal evenings, but I have conjured something out of a forty year old black sequinned top and a thirty year old beaded jacket. Black trousers. It will do for one when you are not meeting the captain.
So, all on track. I am still getting the odd anxiety wave, but it's fine.

Allie ~ Carmine looks so tiny beside Seth! Cute photo and hope she has a good time.
Rebecca ~ So sorry about your fall and glad that you are not having to ride the bus home. A good chance to see son and grand.
Lisa ~ I had to look back to see if I had said anything political or religous. I don't think I have but if I did, I apologize.
I had my antidepresent meds changed this past week and hope I will be feeling better soon.

You are very selective. You don’t know I have been following this group for a number of years, (longer than most of you) off and on since my friend Gloria was here and died sadly.
So I am well aware .. what subjects that are taboo. The truth is the truth.
God Bless Each and Everyone of you.

The thing about religion and politics. I do know that politics have been talked about on here behind the scene still part of the community just privately, almost feeling like the rest of us are wrong and excluded, and occasionally on here without rebuttal. Is that OK? Also, there are a lot of people on here that have asked for prayer since the beginning of this thread. Is that OK?

Good morning ladies!
Just got back from the hospital, knee X-ray. The tech said he didn't see anything and for my age, the knee is in pretty good shape. Of course will have to wait for the radiologist to put on his "X-Ray" glasses and check it out in detail. I'm back to doing SWSY exercises but starting out with really light ankle weights.
Barbara - I've been meaning to comment how impressed I am with the info you put in your spoiler and how you are still keeping track of the 30 different plants per week. I no longer log them - I think I should start again, seems I've kind of gotten in a rut.
Betsy - glad you had a good trip. Gosh, so nice to see where your husband used to ride and what became of that property. Wonderful insight and memories. You and Barbara make me want to take a trek to Idaho some day. Throw Wyoming into the mix. We drove through it in 1977 and loved it.
Barbie - good job on the bi-monthly Costco run. After the hospital visit this morning, I was at Walmart by 6:30 and did a major shopping including some frozen items I haven't purchased in a while. I've been getting Wyman's frozen wild blueberries and their berry mix, 3# bags. The price has gone up a little, but it seems these bags last a long time. I will probably buy some fresh local blueberries as the season starts up, but I think I'm done buying and freezing them myself. According to the bag, the wild blueberries are a lot higher in anti-oxidants.
Like Katla, blueberries and cottage cheese is a favorite of mine too!
And now, a request:
There are many of you on this list who have been successful at losing weight and more importantly, gaining health from better eating and activities. We have some new gals (and "old" ones like me) who would love to hear your stories.
Losing/maintaining/getting in shape at our age is different for us than when we were younger. Some of us got to the goalpost, veered off for one reason or another, and are now looking to get back on the path. Some stayed on target. So please share!
Incidentally, I ran across some notes I jotted down in 2001. I weighed ten pounds more than I do today BUT my waist was 3" smaller and my hips were 4" smaller back then. Here's an example of the menopause belly creep, sarcopenia (muscle loss) and I'm not happy about it. I don't expect to turn back the clock 23 years but getting/keeping muscle and strength AND being able to fit in my jeans comfortably is my goal.
Make it a fabulous weekend!

Good morning, ladies.
Barbara thank you for the suggestion about separation anxiety for little Lucy. I hadn't thought of that and did some initial reading. She does show some symptoms but not to the extreme like some poor abandoned dogs. I actually have been doing some things that help overcome her anxiety without realizing it. Things like leaving her for just 30 minutes at a time to do some gardening. She's so happy to see me when I return. She's not as clingy with me now as she was when she first appeared in our yard as she will now lay by herself and not be constantly on my lap (as long as I am within her sight). I think leaving her for a bit at a time is helping her. I also think she was very well socialized as I saw how she interacted with strangers coming up to her at the vet clinic. Will be doing some further reading as lots of good information on this subject. Thanks again for the suggestion. Lots of well informed ladies on here and a wealth of information!
Enjoy your day, ladies.

Finally had my phone with me when I went outside, so took a few pics. After last year's drought, all the flowers are just going crazy this year. The white morning glories are out, and seriously hundreds of buds left to open. They live on my carport railing and uprights. We planted deep purple ones, as well, but because they're growing from seeds, they're about a month behind, not flowering yet. Looking forward to those...
The chrysanthemums are supposed to bloom in fall, but these are apparently early bloomers, because they're starting already... you can see all the blooms on them just waiting to burst open, too.
Some may remember the hosta I planted when we first got here, and was worried about it surviving the winter. Well, it's survived quite a few winters, and is getting bigger and bigger. You can just see the hydrangea behind it - one didn't make it through the drought, but this one is coming back strong. Can't wait to see when it blooms.
My dwarf magnolias didn't make it, but the redbud did - it was significantly further along when we planted it, so stronger to begin with. It had just a few teeny tiny buds on it before it leafed out, but it's going to make it just fine.
I do love this place... I feel like I'm channeling my mother every time I pull a weed or plant a seed. Helps me remember that love never dies.
Love y'all,

Oh, Rebecca, dear heart. Your feet look so tender and sore. Please look after yourself.
RE: What works/doesn't work -- In addition to the normal spread that seems to happen after menopause (even if we are the same weight), I am on an estrogen blocker since my cancer is estrogen positive (it feeds on estrogen). This has made the situation even worse! One of my friends is also on letrozole, for the same reason, and she is very small but has the "letrozole belly." I have worked hard to at least maintain my weight since starting treatment. In the beginning, I started to lose a little and was scolded that I should not be losing weight. I have gained, but I know why. A daily hot chai latte from Starbucks is responsible. It's not easy to resist because the medical community ends almost every appointment, test, or treatment with "Now, you need to go out and get yourself a treat for going through this!" lol
I'm cutting down the chai, making coffee at home, and I see almost an immediate result on the scale.
Other than that, I try to eat moderate portions of balanced foods. I love chocolate, but not cr@p chocolate, so I usually get expensive, non milk chocolate, and really I can only eat a very little bit of it at a time because it is rich and bitter. That and infused vodkas are my food vices.
I walk as much as I can, which isn't as much as it was before diagnosis. I do squats and desk pushups periodically throughout the day.
The new medicine I start in July has a side affect of anorexia, so we will see if that holds true. It would be nice to be in a position, for once in my life, where I need to remind myself to eat something because otherwise I might not feel like it or remember. Here's hoping! Because I would still like to lose 20 pounds.
Re: Politics and ReligionMost people know, maybe, that I'm a believer. I work at a faith based institution which is very conservative, theologically and politically (not crazy conservative on either count, but for Oregon, very conservative). That being said, I remind myself that I am not the holy spirit. I am responsible for myself and my own faith journey. I am not responsible for anyone else's. I see my job as being light. I try to be a positive influence on everyone I meet, even my waitress or the guy who pumps my gas. I try to have grace towards everyone. I screw up. No doubt. I got really tense with the poor passport guy on the phone last night, (we still don't have my middle son's passport and we are flying out on the 23rd!) In some meetings, I am praying the whole time to control my tongue -- I am by nature extremely sarcastic and I can cut someone down verbally in two seconds, so I really have to watch it. My kids have made life choices that are very disappointing to me. They know where I stand. I reminded my eldest the other day that I don't really care what he does or who he sees. What I wish is that he would give faith another try. It would do no good for me to change him to what I think he should be if he doesn't also believe. No difference. So I keep praying that the holy spirit will touch him. After that, if anything else needs to change about him or his lifestyle, then that will also be up to the holy spirit. I'm just here to love him unconditionally, exemplify grace, and pray for him. He lets me do that, even sometimes right in the moment in person. I think he thinks it's quaint.
Any way, this went on too long. I don't like coming out with dogmatic statements on much of anything. I have my own beliefs, which actually tend toward the liberal side of things, but they are just that -- my own beliefs. No body else has to accept them or even listen to them.
All I know is that I love each person in this group, in all of our messy situations. We are a beautiful group of women.

Lisa ~ Your flowers are beautiful!
Flea ~ Thanks for what you said in your spoiler. I really have the same feelings in so many ways. Our son put us through H#$& during his teen and young adult ages. He was blessed with a wonderful wife and now has blessed us with two grands that we adore. He still has problems which are a lot due to his ADDHD, but so do I!
And, I put up another photo in my posts because it actually looks like my hair now! I have been through so many colors and styles since the pandemic started! Anywhere from white to dark brown to blonde!

Thank you Carol, and I like the new color. I liked the past one, too, but the combination of cut and color with this one really suits you.1

Lisa love the flowers, too!
Tracey they are a young couple new to gardening. They bought the right plants for the sun they have. Unfortunately we have very sandy soil. They did add some dirt but not enough to retain water more than a day when it gets hot. Being in the start of drought with poor air quality does not help. Today the air quality is better as is the temperature. We are going to go to 90 again next week. When they return I will suggest the get a water meter because at 90 some of their plants may need to be watered twice a day especially the ones they did not plant. They have about sixteen plants still in the trays. They dry out quick. Chances are they will lose some of their plants . It is part of the learning curve in gardening.Three of the plants were in bad shape the day they left. I had to super soak them and prune to get them to revive.
I will have no trouble saying no to future requests this summer due to the conditions. If it were a more normal summer it would not be so bad.
Here is the Hydrangea I wintered in a upper east side room. It is flowering before those I have planted in the ground. It is filling out more and more each day.

So what! 1 or 15 they all throw fits at I time or another. We don’t give up on them.. ever. You say you love her.. is she not worth -your effort to try to make -her life better? I couldn’t imagine being in the same situation and not being there for my grandchildren. Hard or not. I am blessed to have my grandchildren and so are you!
Did you ever think that maybe she gives the other parents *respect because she knows and understands they care about her.
OMGoodness I am a complete stranger..saying this to another stranger. Wow. 😞
-Your Granddaughter is worth my time and effort to write this to you.. A little effort goes a long way.
You are not the only one to say this. I, too, am concerned about Carmine. Interestingly, there is little respect for Carmine's choice of name or pronouns or identify. That is only one of the ways that they (Carmine) are being disrespected by family. There is so much misunderstanding about gender non-conforming teen agers and young people and often parents are at the head of the line.
I feel so bad for Carmine and the whole family. With children and grandchildren, the watchword has to be "Come from a place of love"

Yes.. on both! For instance..Political Motivated Agendas.. in my opinion such as gender, pronouns and identity was just brought up to me yesterday by @barbiecat. I can understand, about politics but .. we can’t or are gently reminded that Jesus Christ is off limits. 😢
I have every right to post my opinion here on open MFP…especially when it is to me, specifically.
If you don’t want .. different opinions.. Go to A Group and single me out!

Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
Hope you REALLY love the morning glory because you will never have to plant them again. I planted them ONCE, over 20 yrs ago in one small planter box in my back yard. Now, I pull thousands of them every singe year, not only in my back garden but also in my front and the neighbors yard has them too. They are both the purple and pink ones. They are pretty but they take over, even more than my raspberries have in the front.(was just out there picking some to have with my tea- need to go out with a bowl and pick all the ripe ones before they fall on the ground and become snail food)
I think about my dad when I am gardening. Like , sure wish I could get his advice on why some of my plants just are not growing. I have two pots of yellow squash. Right next to each other. Same seeds. One pot is thriving and over two feet high while the other is just surviving, barely at less than 6inches high.
I have tomato and pepper plants started back in March and are still only 2-3 inches high. Some are in the green house in small pots that need to be transplanted but others are in large pots and still the same as when I transplanted them over a month ago or longer. Most of the garden are not growing much. Maybe the weather because it has been cool and cloudy most days.
Not giving up but would love to see them grow. Tomatoes in one raised bed are doing well and one tomato in front is doing great(ones planted the same time/same kind are just stunted)
Plan on getting the last of the plants in the green house, except the ones going to mom's in the ground this afternoon. If I can find enough pots and places for them.

I do know that politics have been talked about on here behind the scene still part of the community just privately, almost feeling like the rest of us are wrong and excluded, and occasionally on here without rebuttal. Is that OK? Also, there are a lot of people on here that have asked for prayer since the beginning of this thread. Is that OK?
