Thank you for the kind words about my little rescue dog. Have named her Lucy and will post pics in a few days. She is super attached to both of us but I must admit that her preference is D H’s lap. Has started playing with Buddy….running around him and trying to get him to chase her. Buddy is 65 pounds, border collie/lab cross and I think he is starting to think she is a bit of a nuisance but he is gentle and very good with her. Also the cats are tolerant. Our one male cat (neutered) is actually bigger than her.
Dealing with a bit of smoky conditions today but much better than it has been. There are still fires in our province with 15 being out of control. Firefighters have done an outstanding job dealing with this situation and are certainly to be commended.
Got my window cleaning device from Amazon today. Thanks again, Tracey for mentioning it. I put it together and just took it outside to see if I can reach the highest windows. Can reach perfectly. Will wait a bit before I try it out as I just cleaned my windows about a month ago. Will be so much easier for me as the hardest part was getting my ladder positioned as I have rose bushes and peonies up against the front of the house.
Have a nice evening everyone. Off to read through a few more posts.

Among the first resolutions I set for myself when I started MFP was to seek every opportunity to be active, thus I walk a lot and ride my exercise bike whenever I can. This has served me well. Lately Jake and I have been watching a lot of TV together and I ride my recumbent exercise bike while I ride. My attitude toward housework, is "simplify, simplify" so I do only what's necessary. We are both happy with our casual attitude. Kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, clutter clearing are all top priority but everything else is frequently ignored. I walk for two hours every morning no matter what the weather.
Weeding and spreading bark in the yard are meditative and therapeutic for me and I spend about an hour nearly every day from April to October doing both. Jake monitors the few annuals and vegetables, and all my plantings are bulbs which were labor intensive in the fall the years they were planted but require very little attention in the spring and summer.
I line dance with a friend in the extra bedroom in my house for an hour every Friday morning.
Pip, your camping site with the dogs looks so happy and peaceful.

We can learn your name in time. We respect your privacy. The reason I like to see a location is to be able to identify with weather and plants. I live pretty far north so when someone shares that they already have flowers or vegetables, I like to know how far south they are. When someone says that it's too hot to take a walk, I wonder where they live. I hope you'll share what you're comfortable with and ignore the rest.

Rebecca - what wonderful news about your son's advancement. Will be great for him to get the full retirement. Well done!
Joy - Lucy is a neat name for your new little gal. Can't wait to see a photo.
Pip- love the pictures- everything looks spectacular including the fajitas . You and Kirby and the kids sure know how to take a vacation from retirement, lol.
Sue - I kind of miss not having goats. They were a handful and hard on fences when we had them, but so smart and loving. Glad you weren't hurt! I think I got butted a time or two but luckily saw it coming and was able to dodge most of the blow. We had a buck just long enough to get the job done then he went on to another farm.
You also are good with various tools as I recall. I agree, zip ties rank right up there with the bungees, lol. When I was attaching the screening to that little section of the chainlink, I noted when the fence was put in 16 years ago, some they used heavy duty zip ties in a few places as well. Still strong and doing the job after that length of time.
Where is your DD going in Africa? I always thought it would be a great place to visit ever since I read the "Ladies Detective Agency" series. I think it was set in Zimbabwe? Seemed like a fairly arid land but McCall's description of the folks there and their philosophy about life was refreshing. If she takes any photos you'd wish to share, I'd love to see them.
The end of a pretty nice week. Have a great weekend!

REBECCA ~ Congrats to your son for his advancement! I know this is something you have been hoping for!

Its the best news in a long time! Our fate in this big rental was in jeopardy if he didn't make 1st, he would've had to get out of the Navy with 17/18 years in, it was all so scary and such ky. Now we can relax a bit, not think of maybe having to move, and son can relax too. I'm so darn proud of that kid.🤗💖👍🏼

It is a large plot where the home sits. Then the monstrous, yet glorious beds around the trees. One tree is a magnolia tree with big leaves that crumble when you try to rake them up. I personally think she loves weeding, just forgets to stop, gets in her zone I guess. She's 68, so she needs to pay attention to herself too. The simplest things like taking the garbage and recycling bins takes a tractor to haul them down to the end of her long road! Plus there's maintaining her 1875 house. She needs a gardener to just trim the bushes, and mow the property like she likes. Then maybe weed monthly. She can still weed, but it will be for her enjoyment. Keeping that property watered it a whole other macrame' of madness. She needs her gator to pull those around. I am utterly useless helping around the farm. Funny story last summer. She's got the tractor with the scooper thingy, and there's a pipe she motions me to get from the garage. Then she yells, "put it in the bucket"! I take the long pipe and stick it in a large bucket of other things near the entrance of the garage. " No, no, MY bucket, *motions to her scooper thingy*"!!! She was laughing, then I got to giggling. So you see, I am like a fish out of water at her place.😂😂

Your sister sounds like my mom. She is obsessed with weeding. I have to wait until after dark to call her or she will be outside and most of the time she is pulling weeds. There are a TON of weeds to pull which I understand but other things don't get done(like planting in the greenhouse so she had to go buy all her plants this year).
She has a little mower/tractor that she loves for hauling. She did mow the back field with it. Most of the area she pulls the weeds by hand.
She will be 80 in a few weeks. She has more energy/stamina than I do but then she falls asleep as soon as she sits down, even in the middle of a conversation.

Awe, a gardener is passionate about plants! My sister has more stamina than me, that's for certain. The strength in my hands is just not great.

3. Re-frame a worry and try to find a helpful way to think about it. Use worry about hardening of the arteries to get up and MOVE and prep some veggies.
At Grocery Outlet this afternoon a woman approached me and asked about the COEXIST bumper sticker on my car. What did it mean? Was it from an organization?
“Live and let live.” I replied. “No organization that I know of. People need to be able to follow their own paths.” She said “Good, that’s what I hoped it was. We need more of those.” I saw her again at checkout and thanked her for taking the time to ask. She made my day.

Hi Barbie. Thank you for including me in this group. I am looking forward to getting to know you all.
A little bit about me: Recently early retiree and happily married to my love of 19 years, no kids but 2 lovable furry felines (Luna and Nyx) adopted during COVID 2020. A city girl at heart but have respect for the rural and outdoors, I live in the heart of Washington, DC, USA. I love what our city has to offer: free museums, fantastic, food, and lots of tourists.
As of last year, I have managed to gain 10 lbs. mostly due to menopause which is NOT a fun time for me (hot flashes, bloating, interrupted sleep). I'm trying to control my weight and have recently started weight training, cardio, and upping the protein quite a bit.
If anyone has any input on controlling menopause symptoms, please let me know.
Best,
DCResider
Washington, DC
@dcresider
Hi DC! Our Rhody (the black cat who I posted a photo of just recently) is also a COVID Cat.
I like aspects of both city and country life. I work in the city ... and live in what was a slightly more rural suburb, but it's getting all built up around here so we'd like to move out further at some point.
I've had a horrendous perimenopause that lasted about 10 years with just about all the symptoms: on the list in the article below. It would be quicker for me to list the ones I didn't have: burning mouth and thinning hair. I'll be going for a bone density test soon to see if I have osteoporosis.
What are the 34 symptoms of menopause?
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/what-are-the-34-symptoms-of-menopause
Fortunately, my periods have stopped and several of the symptoms have eased, but I'm still doing the hot flash and night sweat thing.
I can't take HRT so I'm on the next best thing, anti-depressants. I think they help, somewhat.
Nothing else seems to help and I have tried a lot of things. I can only ease the symptoms a bit by having a desk fan next to me all the time and wearing summer clothes year round. I also drink a lot of cold water and have to get up from time to time to run my hands under cold water.
I really hope you post again, and if you're comfortable with being called DC or DC Resider, that's fine.

I have run one half marathon and would like to run another.
There is an event coming up in September and I'm hoping to build up to the 10K distance. Then there's another event next January ... and maybe, just maybe I'll be ready for the half again.

@Joy1580vb Lucy is a sweet name.
@auntbk 🙂
@Machka9 Thank you, I really aspire be a lighter\stronger.. gma\ ma. BTW my profile pic is not me. Maybe with some lbs down with added weight training. It motivates me.3 -
Still dropping weight. Just shy of 4 kg down in the last couple months. Down to a weight I haven't seen since probably some time in 2021!
Majority of weight loss occurs 'via breathing'
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/287046
"According to researchers from the University of New South Wales in Australia, when weight is lost, the majority of it is breathed out as carbon dioxide."
So, when I'm huffing and puffing up 25 flights of stairs ... that's a good thing.
Shortly I'm going to go and wield my mattock in the garden again. That gets me huffing and puffing too.

Rebecca- Your sister and you are both beautiful. It’s easy to see you’re related for sure.
Congratulations to your son, that is incredible news.
Rhonda21km - How did your life journey take you to Ireland?
Machka - I’ve always thanked the bus driver. My girls were taught to as well. I think the majority of people do.
Heather- I’m so glad your son wants the painting. He’ll treasure it.
Carla - I can’t wait to see the veil. I know I was so happy when my daughter took some lace from my wedding gown to have on her veil that was made for her. I can’t imagine how proud you will be to make it.
Allie - it must be so hard to see Tracy treated the way she is.
Joy - it angers me when I hear of people dropping dogs and cats. I grew up in rural NB and a couple times a year we had a drop off.
I’m glad the window cleaner will work for you. I was shocked at how easy it was. I may have cleaner windows now regularly.
Sue - I hope your bruises heal quickly and Oliver behaves himself.
Barbie - I have simplified my housework as well. I have found myself doing more the last couple of weeks though.
Went and bought some groceries today, puttered around and sat outside on the deck and read for an hour.
This is me learning to relax.

We had a billy for a short time too. Oh my did that boy STINK- we kept him in the pen farthest from the house.
We also had the fun of bottle feeding 9 babies at one time.We had one mom who died giving birth to triplets and the other three moms got mastitis and couldn't nurse. 9 baby goats in a play pen in the living room. Made for a very interesting prayer meeting a few times when they did it at our house.
Mom would love goats again but too many predators there(bobcats, mountain lions, etc)

Rebecca - So happy for you all that your son now has some security to look forward to.
Joy - You are a very kind person.
I'm a bit nervous about the kids coming. I always worry about Max not getting bored. DH often takes him off to the study to do something complicated and clever.
I have a video about hot stones and wax crayons, but I am not sure Bea can manage that without burning herself! I save clips from Instagram with ideas for kids crafty activities, so I will have to review what I can do with one hand.
I hope DH slept last night. He worries about his daughters, especially the younger one. It sometimes causes anxiety attacks and insomnia. He feels very guilty that he left the marriage when they were young , and he did it suddenly and with no explanation. However, he did his best to keep in touch and saw them regularly,, even when it was difficult. They do love him very much and understand as adults why he had to leave. Clearly, it has left its mark on his YD. She adores her dad though.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx4 -
Get to finally see the triplets tomorrow. I haven't seen them in 4 1/2 yrs. I started taking care of them at 3 months old. 55 hrs a week for five years then the mom decided to be a stay at home mom after they started school. They are 10 now. They are having their birthday party tomorrow. Not sure how much I will get to see them. Their mom said there will be 90 kids!!! in a park. I don't plan on staying too long as I won't know anyone but the mom and the kids.
Tomorrow after I get home I will start baking and candy making.
They youth at church have a dessert auction every year to help pay for church camp. It is a different camp than I went to but church camp has a very special place in my heart. I went every year during jr high and high school. Got to know my first hubby there. We had met at a youth rally before but a week at the same place. A few years later we were married.
making: a mango cake
chocolate indulgence tray( brownies, cho. covered strawberries and cherries, peanut clusters, almond clusters, a few kinds of fudge) Will make two trays. Should go over well.
blueberry tarts.
coffee cakes
I should have started these tonight but too tired. I just need it all done by 10AM Sunday. I will make what I can- don't really need to do all of it but that is what I want to do

1. Decide to look for what’s good every day this month.
I have been enjoying coding during the first 2 days of the month. That's been really good.
Also the 25 flights of stairs a day.
2. Say positive things in your conversations with others.
Chatted with a work friend about our gardens first thing this morning.
Smiled and thanked people as usual.
BTW - thanking the bus driver at the end of a trip is a thing here.
Machka in Oz
3. Re-frame a worry and try to find a helpful way to think about it.
Where do I even start? A single worry?
There are so many worries rumbling away in the background but I try not to think about them or dwell on them.
I try to focus on the good days or even good moments.
M in Oz1 -
A thought about gratitude. Gratitude lists are frequently lists of new, exciting, special, memorable things and that's great, but it's important to me to be grateful every day for the usual things, the things I nearly take for granted, the things that I would miss if they were taken away. Some examples are my husband, my dog, my health, my house, my ability to think and reason, mobility, sight, hearing. There are so many.
