Hello, my chickens,
Making grilled chicken carbonara tonight. Have eaten it in restaurants, but never made carbonara. Just not enough protein for my meat-eating husband (or me) in the original recipes, so adding the chicken should be fine. He's just called, so I'll go get a few things going and we'll eat around 5:30 or 6, as we usually do. 105 outside, just breathlessly hot, and he's been in it on and off all day.
Unexpected drama:After my daughter's rough beginning, it got worse... She flew through Salt Lake City, and long story short, ended up doing CPR on an older gentleman in the airport. It took more than ten minutes for emergency services to get there (in a smallish airport!), and she was pretty sure as she was working on him that the old man wouldn't make it after they took him away. One man got there after she did and helped swap out compressions, as well as finding an AED... but they won't start an already stopped heart, they're only built to shock a fibrillating heart back into rhythm.
She was so frustrated and angry, bless her. When she saw him on the floor, apparently two of the folks staring down at the man said they had medical knowledge, but were doing nothing. So she did. I'm so proud of her, and she said she knows it wasn't her fault, but this may well haunt her. And now she has to cope with a curious seven-year-old daughter who may well never forget it either. She and her two youngest are on a ten-hour flight now to Hawaii, and my heart is there, in mid-air with her.
Enough of this day... time to go dive into an unfamiliar recipe...
Love,
Lisa in AR10 -

Debbi and Rebecca, I tried mochi once, could not get past the glutinous mass that surrounded the ice cream! As Lisa would say "urk!"
We are leaving today to go on holiday, we haven't seen our youngest son for almost four years, so we will be traveling across a few provinces to get to where he is. Neither hubby nor I slept all that well last night, good thing we aren't going too far today, hopefully since the trip will be started, we will sleep better tonight.
I will have plenty of electronics with me, so will be able to keep up with reading, don't know how much commenting I will be doing tho. I will be thinking of all of you tho as we go thru our various ups and downs.
Evelyn, Vancouver Island
The mochi isn't too bad if you eat it more frozen but I totally understand the texture thing.
It really depends on the brand for me. Some use a lot less mochi and some the mochi isn't so sticky
I am like that with the yam threads my mother in law puts in sukiyaki- to me they are like unflavored gummy worms. She used to tell me to eat them because they are good for me. Then I looked up in a Japanese cook book- basically no nutritional value. Now I skip them and eat the meat, tofu and cabbage.
Have a wonderful time seeing your son. I can't imagine not seeing my son for that long. Mine still lives at home and was hard not seeing him for the week he went away with his girlfriend for their 5 yr "anniversary".

Lisa- so sorry your daughter had to deal with that and the lifetime memory they will all have.
Is there any way she will ever find out if the gentleman made it or not?
Mom felt the same way when she had to do CPR on dad but didn't stop until the ambulance got there almost 20 minutes later.

Mochi is most definitely an acquired taste. I like Mochi with fruit in the middle too. Our Asian has them in tangy fruit flavors, covered in fruit Mochi and a dusting of tapioca flour.
Heather, well my thoughts are with them. We have moved many times with all three sons in tow, during the holidays. One year or tree was just a tabletop one with a couple presents each. We were together and life happens.💖👍🏼😁

I wasn't a fan at first of mochi but the fruit flavored ones are really good. I also like the ube ,brown sugar and peanut ones too.
I would have to say the same thing about sushi-
The first few times I had it(and I ONLY eat vegetarian or cooked sushi-no raw fish for me), the nori would make me sick to my stomach. Now, shoot, I eat it plain as a crunchy snack a pack or two at a time.
My favorite is wasabi nori.

Rebecca: So glad you don't have to move!
Carol: I got way behind on the blog. I know your knee hurts and you have a brace. Are you having surgery?
Heather: I hope you and DH have a wonderful time in France once all the arrangements are finalized.
Allie: I hope you feel better and are able to rest!
Machka: Wow 64 degrees in the winter. I usually have the heat at 72 degrees during the day and 68 degrees at night! Maybe next winter I will try cutting back some!
Rori: Great you have a man communicating with you! How wonderful!
Evelyn: Love the bouquet!
Kayne: Welcome! Good luck with your surgery!
Debbie: Do you think your DH would benefit from an anti-depressant?
Tracey: Educating yourself to be an Education assistant! Great going!
Lisa Etc and Machka: Great news on your test results!
I got behind on reading the blog, but skimmed through the best I could! My weight is down 4 pounds now. I haven't done any exercise at all this week. Hopefully tomorrow and over the week end. I did go to Atlanta and see Wicked. I liked it. Not much is happening which may be a good thing! I need to have the house painted. This is my next big project!

KJ – we just received the Poppin Tubes and I had to open it because I don’t want to have to struggle at Denise’s. I don’t even know if she has a pair of scissors! Anyway, I think I’ll order a set for me, they’re so much fun…..
Made some banana chocolate chip muffins today after the pool. Mainly because I needed some chocolate chips to take to Denise’s Remember that Rice Krispie thing I got for PJ to decorate? Well, one of the decorations they suggest is chocolate chips. Looks like I’m getting down to the bottom of the bag of bananas that I got for 26 cents/pound.
Evelyn - have a great trip! Looking forward to hearing all about your travels
barbie – of course you didn’t leave the impression that someone should avoid the news. What works for one person, doesn’t work for another. That’s one of the wonderful things about this group, we all accept everyone else for who they are, even if it’s not something like us. Some people can devour the news….for others it isn’t something for them. Everyone is different, and we respect your feelings.
Heather – the first time I experienced heated floors was when I visited my friend in Switzerland. How neat! What happens when something happens to the heating under the floor? Do they have to rip up the whole flooring just to fix it?
Lisa = I would be very proud of my daughter if she had done what your daughter did. My heart goes out to her and her daughter, tho
Walked down to Food Lion, returned carrots that I got by mistake and bought kiwi because they were on sale. I also had a coupon for almond milk. I really should have only gotten two or one of the kiwi since the almond milk is heavy. Oh well….
Played mahjongg by the pool (with my feet in the spa). Then took a shower (I sweat on the walks). Now to bed.

Rebecca ~ I'm not sure if you had already changed to lamps to outside decos or not. Anyway, they sure looked good.
Heather ~ Nice floors! The house will be beautiful when it is finished.
Evie ~ Enjoy your holiday. Four years was a long time not to see your son.
Lanette ~ Your chickie stories are so interesting.
Reading but no notes taken!

Not yet. The photos were examples of the lamps. I asked eldest son if he still had the Japanese lamps and he does👍🏼. If will be awhile before we can use them outside, but if he sends some of his stuff home then maybe. He will have to downside his stuff for Japan, but its not until next year that he moves there.

I like the teriyaki nori. My eldest son ate mostly anything when we were in Japan when he was a child. He would eat the dried fish snacks. He loved grossing his father out crunching on them, my husband saying ew!!! Also the rice candy with the rice paper "wrapping" you could eat. He also loved the various savory seaweed wrapped, or decorated crackers.

Heather- I have all of the family history for my maternal family here. I have read some of it. One of the ancestors was hanged in the Salem witch trials. Another was the man that created the Miranda rights that police use.
I love the floors in your sons house. Do they have a move in date yet?
That is a lot of travel arrangements to make! Good for you.
It was chilly here today too, 13C outside, I had to turn the furnace on to get rid of some damp and cool.
On my Dad’s paternal side I have written a book with a cousin in 1995 following our direct line back to the 1600’s England. That is now very outdated and the cousin that wrote it with me passed unexpectedly in 2019.
Ginny - my daughter is telling close friends and family. She feels she needs the support if anything goes wrong and we all know they have been going through the process so it’s pretty hard to hide it anyway. I have a good feeling that all will go well.
I can’t imagine having the anxiety of cancer hanging over my head all the time. I hope the doctors appointment goes well.
I am always shocked at the insurance conversations when they come up. Grateful to live in Canada. It’s not perfect healthcare, but it’s available.
Carol - thank you. This is an accelerated course, 10 months vs 2 years. I don’t know how much time I’ll have to craft.
Lisa - Great idea about selling the tin photos, I’m going to look into that.
Also a great idea about a $1 a pound! That will buy a few baby items.
I am quite excited about going back to school. The financial aspect petrifies me, but we’ll get through. We’ve gotten through before.
I would be wiped after that travelling. I guess we just do what we have to do though don’t we.
I don’t like most vegetables, I am a very fussy eater, my DH is fond of saying “if it has flavour, Tracey won’t eat it”.
I admire everyone that can eat anything.
How terrible that that Kelsi has to have this guy. I don’t understand guys like that.
Beth - Are you in a position that you can hire some help for the siding job?
Allie - I hope you’re feeling better. Here you have to wait 6 months for a vaccine after Covid. I think it’s because you get natural antibodies.
I would check with my doctor for any recommendations regarding my ability to return to normal activities.
Annie - I hope your Dad is feeling better today. Good that your sister was there to help.
Kayne - Welcome! I too make cards and do crafts.
Machka - That sounds like a honour to be invited to Government House. Will you have to speak as well?
Vicki - you sure struggle with staffing.
If I was closer I would would work for you.
Lanette - I bet you would enjoy a coop cam. I’m truly enjoying your chicken stories.
When is the auction for the drums?
Evelyn - Have a wonderful trip!
Wave on your way by!
Rebecca - I love those lamps. What a great way to reuse old things.
I didn’t post last night, we had company until after 11.
A friend of ours needed DH’s help doing something to the roof rack on her truck.
We ended up visiting very late.
I went and applied for student aid yesterday. It will take maybe after the class starts before I hear. If that is the case I will sign a document stating that if it falls through I don’t owe any money.
DH mentioned last night that his Dad’s death has seemed to sap his drive to do things. I understand because I felt the same way when mine passed. It’s hard. I have to hand it to him though he suggested we actually do something tomorrow so we are going to a museum that has a 70’s exhibit going. I’m excited to do that.
I have finished all of the painting on my SIL’s Christmas present tonight. I am going to add some crystals, rocks to the centre.

Had a great walk this morning- chilly but better than too hot. An hour and fifteen minutes.
An hour at Zumba tonight- finished out the day with 20,000 steps (232 zone minutes)47 floors 9.2 miles 2363 calories says my Fitbit. Would have had a few more steps but had to put my watch on the charger- it was down to 5% when I got done with class.
Tomorrow I will go with dh to MIL's house and I will walk her dog while he feeds her and gives her her meds. We will do our usual Thurs. errands. then I need to come home and clean the catio.
Had a little fun/drama just now.
There has been a baby possum in our garage for over a week. I had a trap set a few times, left the garage door open a bit a few nights, thought it had left but dh went in the garage and saw it on his 3Dprinter- I thought he was still in there because stuff has been knocked down.. DH ran back in the house while I used a grabber and my hand to finally catch it(took MANY tries-too small for the grabber to hold onto its body), Tossed it out the garage door onto the lawn. It immediately went to where we feed the outside/feral/neighborhood cats and started chowing down. It survived in the garage that long because dh tends to leave cat food down for one of the cats that likes to come in the garage when he is out there to eat- not sure where Munch belongs. Dh sees a cat and just starts feeding it

DH is home today because of the rain. He's quite glad of the break because it's a lot of driving at his age, 77. He only keeps going over to where we used to live, for the cricket, because his friend goes. Otherwise he would go locally. Roadworks are always causing havoc.
Max is coming over after an early lunch. We will go to Hove Museum just down the road, which we haven't been to in all the time we've lived here! We keep meaning to, and just never get round to it. DDIL is taking the girls to the cinema. I hope she will find a back way to avoid the jams in town because of the hotel demolition. Everyone thinks the fire was an insurance job.
Before that DH will do his Thursday fruit and veg shopping. I'm fancying sausages with cabbage and cherry tomatoes. It's that kind of chilly, damp, weather.
I'll be copying and pasting. And nagging DH about the insurance for the French trip. I also have to order my repeat prescription. I'll do that now.

Regarding reading the news and other articles ... I realised that I tend to do it when I am on the bus or when I am waiting. Waiting for the bus. Waiting for an appointment. Waiting for my computer to finish updates.
Once I am at work or at home, I no longer have the time for such luxuries. And yes, I look at that sort of reading as a bit of a luxury.
I'm thinking about this topic because I just read an article while waiting for the bus.

Kayne-welcome to the group. While I didn't live at the top, I did live in Presque Isle, Maine for a few years. Close to the border and the St. John River Valley-incredible country and wonderful people. I have had surgery on one foot years ago-both at once should be an adventure. Best wishes.
Lisa in Ar ETC-I hate it when there are parental issues with children. While it is sad it is good he is leaving his text message thread.
Annie-hope your father is doing better. At least your sister is getting a real idea of how things are-this can be helpful as decisions may need to be made.
Lanette-you are certainly keeping busy! I know what trying to clean out all of the stuff is like. I am enjoying the chicken stories!
Evelyn-safe travels and enjoy your trip. Hope time with your son goes well.
Beth-what a good memory you will have of your mother's birthday! So happy that the move has worked out. Peaceful thoughts on your Dad's anniversary.
Heather-the house is looking so good!
Rebecca-creative idea with lamps. Understandable you will think of YS. Don't lose heart-remember the prodigal son.
Tracey-thanks for sharing the golden retriever! Perhaps with your financial aid package will be some sort of "work-study" assistance so you can get paid something while attending school.
Debbie-I think I can do without a possum! Never really cared for the creature. Unfortunately, animals don't always realize who the food is for! Hope you can get it to move on completely.
Fair yesterday was ok. It is a designated "don't judge your food day." Meaning I know I will not doubt go over calories for the day but darn that funnel cake was good! Once a year is not horrible.
Got things at work situated for major issue going on while I am gone today. I have some good staff on it. Will need to call one who has been on vacation and update her first thing this morning before I leave. Then I should be able to focus just I me if I so chose. Already in the 70's this am (at 5:30)and muggy. Am going to get short walk in here in just a bit as soon as some sign of light. Lucky there is nothing I need to do outside except walk from car to building. Saw an unexpected rainbow last night while returning from store with friend-think it is a sign of something good!
Take care all,

The maintenance guys have been outside painting the lines on the road, (parking bays etc). DH had to park our car around the corner last night, because there has been a notice up since last week. As it is raining, we wondered if they would come, but they've done the opposite side of the road. I hope they finish today.
Weather truly miserable. Wet, windy, chilly.
