WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR AUGUST 2023

Allie - I think that it shows your strength that you are still able to have a civil relationship with Tom and Elena.
I don’t know that I could do the same.
Barbara - I was 3 months past 18, and not legal drinking age in the province, on our wedding day. Rodger was 22 and a 1/2. My Dad wanted me to go home instead of walking me down the aisle. Many people told us we wouldn’t last more than a year. His Mother and my best friend were and are our biggest supporters. A lot of people have apologized over the years.
I’m sorry your area is being plagued by fires too. Keep safe.
Heather - I am feeling better for the most part. It’s when I have to deal with work or think about it that I suffer anxiety and panic.
The kitchen at your sons is beautiful. Can’t wait to see all of it.
Ginny - thank you, I would not enjoy the business of selling some of these things. There are so many doing it and customers are brutal. I enjoy doing our ornaments at craft fairs, but we make and they can choose to buy or not. I have looked at Etsy, but it is pricy.
Allie - I hope you find some answers soon. Being in pain is awful.
It’s good that Miles at least was in his own room all night. Maybe a week or so and it will be an all night sleep.
I’m sorry, but for everything you do for them Tracy sounds a bit ungrateful.
Lisa - I love a nice coat of primer. It leaves so many possibilities wide open.
I hope the new meds work and heal you up, it’s been a long haul for you.
Machka - I’m sorry about your hives. Is that something that happens often?
Katie - you have me curious about what Categories is it a phone app game? Or a paper game?
Barbie - I think some smoke has settled in our area it got pretty cool and “overcast” this evening.
Pip - I love your camping style.
Lanette - I do not have a message and don’t know how to add you as a friend on here. I see you are a suggested friend of mine on FB. I sent you a friend request through there.
I noticed some yellow in our leaves a couple of weeks ago, Rodger told me the tree was dying. 🙄
They are turning fast now, and some are on the ground after the wind storm Thursday night.
Evelyn - Did you have a nice trip?
I had a visit with our eldest today. I actually got some alone time with her and it was wonderful. We used to get a lot of time, but it hasn’t happened in a couple years.
I stopped at the book store, I have read every book I have so many times I don’t even need to start reading to know some of the dialogue. There was a local to Alberta author promoting his new book. It is a mystery set in Alberta and discusses some mental health challenges, he is a retired phycologist. He told me that the detective doesn’t solve the crime but at the end of the book I’ll know who did it. It has me intrigued. He signed it for me.
I made a roast beef dinner, but ate it alone. Rodger came home with a headache today and promptly fell asleep. He slept for 4 hours.
Off to bed, new session starts tomorrow.

I had imagined that this winter (just ending) would be slow and relaxing. I envisioned getting the puzzles out and doing lots of reading. I even imagined I would make progress on the office mess.
Then I blinked and it's almost the end of winter. I am well behind on several things. Plus the puzzles and office haven't been touched.
So many other things came up!
On bees ...
A queen lives about 5 or 6 years while other bees (scouts, guards, nurses, foragers, etc.) live 3-6 weeks.
Early in her life, the queen takes a flight where she mates with a drone. She returns to the hive and proceeds to lay eggs in the honeycomb cells. The brood is tended by the nurse bees and most of the brood grow up to be scouts, guards, nurses, foragers, etc. This process keeps going and going because the scouts, guards, nurses, foragers, etc. have short lives.
But in the spring, sometimes the nurse bees choose a few female larvae, feed them royal jelly, and raise them up to be queens.
When one hatches, the old queen will usually leave and will take about 2/3 of the bees with her ... in a swarm. If you ever see a swarm, leave them alone, contact your local beekeeping association and someone will come and get them. Those swarms are highly valued.
Meanwhile, the new queen will kill all the other would-be queens and will set up shop in the hive. If the old queen doesn't leave in time, she'll be killed by the new queen too.
The old queen and her followers will be collected by someone (or will set up a hive in a tree or chimney or something), and the year will pass. Next spring, the same sort of thing might happen.
Our bees were a caught swarm, so we can't know for sure how old the queen was. She could have been nearing the end of her life.
The brood box was empty so I figure she passed on at least 3-6 weeks ago, the nurse bees got the last set of larvae hatched, and then there was no more.
So yes, it happens from time to time.
The Queen Bee: her birth, life and death

And yes, we'll clean things up and see if we can obtain another swarm.

Morning ladies
Im awake and have gotten the dogs out and fed Alfie
Homer it takes awhile to get him going.
Got Homers first set of pills in
Didn't sleep well at all.. and can't wait to see the Dr tomorrow, im just sore all over and in pain and sort of short of breath.. so I will see what she says tomorrow..
But when we get home im taking a nap lol.3 -
Morning, afternoon or evening, all, as the geography fits...
Monday morning, Cor's off to work. Got a busy morning going, but should be able to relax this afternoon. Now the prednisone is out of my system, I'm sleeping more than seven hours a night again (yay!). Woke up stiff as all get out, but it's starting to work itself out a bit. Already got the last small bag of trash down for pickup, and have the water going for the flowers. Corey watered his garden last night.
The early morning will be getting my meds sorted out for the week and getting the laundry folded. Got a Walmart delivery coming in right at 10 a.m. May not wait for it, as I don't have to be here. Also have a FedEx pickup sometime today of the extra air conditioner. It's out under my carport, and labeled and ready to go. Corey got the Amazon A/C installed yesterday, bless him, so we are pretty full up on air conditioning at this point!
Want to run into town to get a new desk planner/weekly/monthly tracker. I use one to track my weight, and the blood pressure that my cardiologist wants me to take on a random basis, among other things. Want to get the smaller one this time.
Also need to stop and get some deli ham that I can only get in the big city, as no one out here sells it. It has no smoke flavor to me--which for whatever reason, always makes me nauseous, and particularly with ham. It's uncured, as well, and doesn't have that slimy feel that so many of the overprocessed lunch meats have. I actually love the taste of ham, but not what they put in most of them. And Michele, dear heart, because you always ask, it's Boar's Head Sweet Slice ham.
Gee, exciting, huh? Ah well... I like this life. It suits me these days.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR4 -
Yesterday, late afternoon, I went to visit the hens and let them out for a little walkabout. Fairy was making a noise like a crow - not crowing like a rooster, but kind of a "caw" like a crow makes. She is black like a crow, after all. It was almost like she had something stuck in her throat. But she was acting normal, eating, etc. I went to check inside of their coop to see if I needed to clean it out and guess what? A little bitty dark brown egg! I think that was her way of announcing her accomplishment.
I haven't been out to spend any time with them yet to see if she's back to normal voice.
I was awake and up at 2:30 -- too many salty peanuts before bed. That will show up in the accountability post coming later this morning.
But I have a crockpot of apples cooking down into sauce, got my walk in. It's going to be a good day with a nap later on.
Chilly morning, I think the smoke is starting to clear from our area - I can see clouds in the sky as the haze diminishes.
More later....

Did a workout on the bosu today then took a walk around the neighborhood. I’m liking this cooler weather. Then WalMart. Then the pool
pip – of course you are in first place! Didn’t think you wouldn’t be, but still glad to see your stats
Ginny – those are great sheets for Allie!
Lisa – one time my son asked me when I was going to stop worrying about him. I just told him “get used to it because when I die, I’m going to come back from the grave to worry about you”. Happy you’re feeling better
M – so sorry you lost the beehive
Joy – I don’t know if you’ve read my hint for getting rid of the itch TEMPORARILY. Aim your blowdryer at the itch. Hold it there as long as you can possibly stand it. The reason this works is that the heat breaks up the histamines that cause the itching. Yes, in a few hours they will probably reunite. But in the meantime, you’re not itching. At first I thought “no way is this going to work”. We had been doing some cutting of brush and got chigger bites. Were they ever itchy! I tried everything under the sun to relieve the itching. Someone told me about this so I figured “I’ve tried everything else, what’s the worst that can happen? Nothing?” So I gave it a try and it worked!
Carol – part of me can’t help wondering (yes, I’m a worry wort) if she has bruises and doesn’t want us to see them. Then again, the other part of me wonders if she is feeling that Pete’s home so he can help take care of PJ. If we go up when he’s not home, then we can take care of PJ. So that’ll give her two weekends.
A friend just called. Seems she has some sort of “debilitating” leg wound. Not sure exactly what. Anyway, she asked if we still had the chair for the shower, we do. So we’ll take it to her after dinner along with a chair that sits on top of the toilet and has arms to assist you getting up and the transport chair. She’s not sure she’ll need the chair, but just in case. This will probably make it easier for her daughters who are helping her.
After the pool made some of the protein waffles so I can put them in the toaster (again, thanks Rebecca for the idea)
Michele NC
No prob. 💖. You know if you make them, (being that you can buy them frozen already made), and add eggs, then put peanut butter on them with berries or my favorite bananas, then a wee bit of syrup or honey, you have a lot of protein there! I never use butter because the heat from the waffle melts the peanut butter so there's no need.😁👍

Welcome @cyntdooley Cindy from FL! Brava for grooming Izzy yourself. I should do this, but my eye hand esthetic coordination are non-existent :[
Pip you GO gal!
Machka many thanks for the Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction enzyme analysis recommendation. When I get in to new MD I’ll ask her. So sorry to hear of your hive’s loss.
Heather have you any tips on how to change one’s attitudes about control and success. Like Lisa I struggle with perfectionism, especially analysis to paralysis.

I find the world of bees fascinating! When you tell it, it sounds like a Medieval kingdom, I can picture the story in my head. The old Queen with her loyal followers, retreating to another part of the kingdom in the dark of night. Truth be told, I am scared to death of them. One of my phobias.

1. Set an intention to be kind to others (and yourself) this month. I plan to be kind to people I meet and to myself. Not just this month but all the time. It may not be every time, but I will try.
2. Send an uplifting message to someone you can’t be with. I will text my best friend who lives in Michigan, and my friend that lives in NY. Did this
3. Be kind and supportive to everyone you interact with. I did this!
4. Ask someone how they feel and really listen to their reply. I plan to try to remember to do this. Done!
5. Spend time wishing for other people to be happy and well. Will meditate and do this through a loving-kindness meditation.
6. Smile and be friendly to the people you see today. Will do!
7. Give time to help a project or cause you care about. I volunteer at Bottomless Lakes State park and also belong to the ‘Friends of’ group and am on the board as secretary. Does this count?
8. Make some tasty food for someone who will appreciate it. My DH does all the cooking. Perhaps i will look for something KETO to cook. Otherwise, we give food to our co-host often.
9. Thank someone you’re grateful to and tell them why. I will!
10. Check in with someone who may be lonely or feeling anxious. Checked in with my son.
11. Share an encouraging news story to inspire others. Did this at ER when the diagnosis was given.
12. Contact a friend to let them know you’re thinking of them. Did this yesterday and will do again today.
13. No plans day! Be kind to yourself so you can be kind to others too. I need the rest!
14. Take an actions to be kind to nature and care for our planet. Will do! Need to de-stress!
15. If someone annoys you, be kind. Imagine how they may be feeling. I will try to put myself in the other person’s shoes. Did this again last night with a camper.
16. Make a thoughtful gift as a surprise for someone. Will have to think about this! Did not do this.
17. Be kind online. Share positive and supportive comments. Will do!
19. Be thankful for your food and the people who make it possible. I am.
20. Look for the good in everyone you meet today. Sometimes that is hard but I am getting better at it. Maybe not right away but after I thought about the person’s reactions and what could cause it.
21. Donate unused items, clothes, or food to help a local charity. I will have to think on this. Not planning on going to town today.22. Give people the gift of your full attention.
23. Share an article, book, or podcast you find helpful.
24. Forgive someone who hurt you in the past.
25. Give your time, energy, or attention to someone in need.
26. Find a way to ‘pay it forward’ or support a good cause.
27. Notice when someone is down and try to brighten his day. (My DH’s birthday. He always gets depressed on this day. Worse this year as he turns 70 today).
28. Have a friendly chat with someone you don’t know very well.
29. Do something kind to help in your local community.
30. Give away something to those who don’t have as much as you.
31. Share Action for Happiness with other people today.

I’ve been working on getting sober, at least drinking less and found some books on Amazon from ALANON to help me do that without going to meetings. One books gives daily readings and today’s struck home with me and I thought I would share. Not sure who wrote it in the book. ” I do have the power to change myself, and nothing can prevent it but my own unwillingness. Never let me imagine that my satisfaction with life depends on what someone else may do.”

Should be starting to clear by this time tomorrow. With all the hot hot weather we had, trees are dropping leaves and it looks like fall already.
A reminder, if anyone wants to add info to the accountability post tomorrow, please message it to me on MFP.

Rita - Love the quote!
Barbara - I don't really have any tips as such. I think, for me, it is a general consequence of all the work I have done on myself, and writing my memoirs. I am just happier and less demanding of myself. By no means do I think I've got it taped, but I do take things more easily than I did. I think I am more aware of the processes in my brain that are push/pulling me around. It certainly is a less painful place to live. Love to you. Awareness is the first step. You are there.
Kids here. Girls painted the mugs I bought. Max tried to work out how to create a pentagon in the Ancient Greek method. Both he and DH failed.
Then we played boules in the garden, and the girls showed us how to play marbles with the balls. Edie and I won every time.
I painted a couple of random blob pictures. Max is reading. Edie painted puffins. Bea playing a self -invented board game. Pick up very soon.
The poor cleaner had to work her way around us and the kids and a table full of art stuff.
Frittata for dinner. Broccoli, (i blanched it) artichokes, broad beans, peas, scallions, feta. 6 extra large eggs. We love the leftovers for lunch the next day.
All good, but tired. Hope my son and DDIL have got Bea's room sorted. It has been used for storage and is really dusty.
Looking forward to relaxing.

Was able to chat with Sailor on Guam this weekend. He has been watching a new anime series. So of course I am watching it and giving him my take on it. Its weird to think this morning its 2 am tomorrow there. So he's off work and getting ready to head to bed. Its nice to touch base with him. I miss our chats, so this is almost as good. Chatted with my eldest sister. She is the one with the 1875 house, and has been trying to deal with a setback probably due to her yard sale being done. There's so many "firsts" in her life. First time doing this or that without her husband. She wonders if she grieves enough, or correctly, so hard on herself. Its a step forward, two steps back kind of thing. I let her vent, and cry, and gave her gentle guidance. First what she's feeling is normal, but she is a pioneer in all this, no one we have in our immediate family has lost a mate. My parents had divorced a long time before my mom had passed. My step father had endured my mothers passing, but he wasn't immediate family and it was only a couple months before he had another "lady friend". Men grieve different than women. It was an emotional video chat, crying off and on throughout our conversation. Here's a photo some friends took of her and her faithful sidekick Tucker.

cool morning- slept in which felt great. Having my tea then heading out to clean the catio. Will be great when dh finally puts the door on where the playhouse/litter box is so I don't have to lean through the little window and make a dozen trips with a little bucket to clean it out. Will go pick up another 40lb bag of pine bedding pellets to put in when I am done. So glad we tried them. They work great and really keep the smell down and super cheap compared to regular litter. The more they pee on them, the better they smell.
Will pick some tomatoes and check the rest of the garden. No other plans. Nice to have my day off- will take some time to get used to having M,T,W off.

We have Edie and Max on Wednesday afternoon. Max will only stay a short time as he has sailing classes. They haven't finished Bea 's room.
They were meant to have a shower while they were here, but we all completely forgot!
Wednesday morning I am going to the park for a French Circle meet up. The woman I connected with will be there. I emailed her.
Thursday afternoon I have a Zoom call with Saga, for which I will get a £25 voucher for half an hour. Last time I got £100 for 90 mins and bought my white leather trainers. It's about being a grandparent and looking after the kids in the school holidays etc. It's Saga 'Experienced Voices', a market research group. Happy to get a voucher! I might put it towards a wedding outfit for my niece's wedding.

Tracey in Edmonton - This week's average weight was 197.7. Down a bit. I won’t be weighing most of this week and next because I’ll be away, but will start up again in September.
Lanette SW WA – up 1 pound, 6 pounds to goal range. So no improvement on pants fitting looser. Still delaying breakfast 12 to 14 hours, still cut back on processed foods and sugary treats but too many salty peanuts before bed this past couple days.

I got 5 hours sleep last night. I was at the paint store at 7 to see if there was another shade of pink for my house. I napped this afternoon. I finally decided to keep my house the color that it is. I really love the color and I have had enough change for 1 year. I spoke with my mother today. We use to text but now we are speaking every day. She is 92. Some days go better than others. Today she was complaining about all the COVID shots we need to get and other shots. I am very grateful all these shots exist. For some reason her complaining really irritated me. I guess I think she is ungrateful for all the advances in medicine. I hope to work on my knitting this evening and go to the cat rescue in the morning!

I knew three of the categories but couldn’t figure out the other one, so I made too many wrong guesses. I only had one category completely right, and that was after I wasted two guesses on it. One day, all of the choices were two letter words. The categories ended up being musical notes, state abbreviations, periodic table abbreviations, and something else. I can’t remember. It takes a few tries before you get the hang of it, and even then, some days, like today, are just hard.
Wordle, Connections, and Phrazle are my 3 mind games I play on the internet. Then I play Sudoku and one more word game on apps. I may play a few too many, but I am terrified of dementia. I’ve got to do what I can.
If you want one that will really make you say inappropriate words, try Contexto. My daughter had me addicted to that for a while, but I gave it up. You just guessed random words and the game told you how close you were in context to the word of the day. It was ridiculous. I still play every now and then, because it’s kind of like a train wreck. You feel pretty smart if you can guess it in 20 tries, but it is crazy!

And yes, we'll clean things up and see if we can obtain another swarm.

I find the world of bees fascinating! When you tell it, it sounds like a Medieval kingdom, I can picture the story in my head. The old Queen with her loyal followers, retreating to another part of the kingdom in the dark of night. Truth be told, I am scared to death of them. One of my phobias.

One of the neat things about the bees is that all of them, except the drones, are female. So all the worker bees - nurses, guards, scouts, foragers, etc are female.

Peanuts make me bloat and cramp something awful. They fairly high in calories too. So I rarely eat them.
I've been the same weight for about 3 weeks. Not bad, I guess with a week of travel in there. But I have started climbing stairs again so hopefully I see some movement downward by the end of the week.

I thought I would share a poem that someone shared with me.
I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing, but example's always clear;
And the best of all preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs.
I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.
And the lecture you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do;
For I might misunderstand you and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.

I rode my trike for an hour today then swimming for 45 minutes. Recently got ebike/trike for me cause of poor balance. Tired of riding my stationary bike inside. I love my trike. I feel like a kid again. Best money ever spent. I did fall with my trike shortly after I got it but okay. I love it. It's great exercise. I've lost inches in my trunk and legs. Pretty proud of my hard work.
-all of you ladies just amaze me. Thank you for this lovely group.
