The fact that he learned to speak when we were stationed in Japan changed him a bit. As a boy, it didn't matter how peopled talked to him, but it mattered how kids treated him. His voice had a European accent, for some unusual reason, and he went to speech class. Kids didn't really listen to what he said, but how he said things. So he had trouble integrating into converations.
But he's an adult now, and still wears his heart on his sleeve. He was our room mate when he was stationed here on Whidbey Island. Still is, but he's in Guam now. Soon he will be heading to Japan. The life of a sailor! We are retired Navy so its all the life we know.😁💖

He looks like a really lovely man. Handsome fellar too. I know you are proud. If I repeated this please forgive me as today I had some back injections. Ya know I always get sedation. 😉
Yep he is a sweet guy. I miss our pilgrimages to a ramen place down the island. We would go have gyoza, and ramen, making yummy noises at each other and be in food comas all the way home.💖

Had an eventful and busy day yesterday.Took the Camry in for an oil change, they checked the cabin filter and found a huge mouse nest. I need to start putting Bounce dryer sheets on the tires when I park the car in the garage, or mothballs or peppermint oil in the engine compartment. Rotten buggers. I watched the guy change the filter and I can buy one at the auto parts store and replace it myself in the future.
Stopped by the woodstove place where we bought ours 8 years ago to inquire about a chimney sweep - our regular guy retired three years ago and haven't been able to find a replacement. Well, they handed me a card and said here's a new guy who is doing that, they've had good reports. I called him and he was able to come out after lunch.
Long story short - the chimney and woodstove are cleaner than they were, but he left a mess for me to clean up. The vacuum he was going to use to suck up the ash and creosote from the chimney well malfunctioned and it blew ash and debris all over the living room. He left chunks of creosote all over the stove and ceramic tile. He left a sooty footprint on my gray carpet that my vacuum couldn't take out. He didn't seem upset about it and wondered if I'd give him a 5 star rating on Google. I smiled and said I'd think about it - I just wanted him out of the house ASAP.
Plus, another good thing about that chimney guy climbing on the roof to brush out the chimney stack - he said the wooden surround up there was in poor shape and he knew a guy who was a carpenter and could maybe squeeze it in to get it redone.
I admit, it was looking ratty - had mildew on the north side and paint chipping off on the east side. I had been concerned it was deteriorating and would cause a leak.
So, here's the good ending to this story - I remembered a contractor - older fella, I'm guessing in his 60's - that had been doing small jobs in the neighborhood the past couple years, I had his card and gave him a buzz.
He came out in the late afternoon, set up his ladder and climbed up to inspect it. The good news is - it's in great shape, just needs a little caulk replaced down where the hardiplank meets the metal flashing and a quart of paint. He said it would take him less than 2 hours and would cost $100 plus the paint.
I felt like I won the lottery. I'm now thinking of other jobs he might be able to do since he also does indoor and outdoor remodeling.
Guess what his name is.... ROGER!

Good thing the mice didn't do more damage- had them get in my old mustang that dh was planning on restoring- they chewed up all the wires. Never did get it restored. He sold it to the neighbor for $500(I was NOT happy about it but oh well- said there was too much rust on the frame rail to restore it)
I would give that chimney guy a 2 star at most- to leave that much mess and not be even concerned about it is rediculous.
Glad you found a good handyman. Nice to have one that will do a good job and not charge a ton.

Had a nice walk at the wetlands. Quite a few people out walking with their dogs.
Did almost get hit by a car just crossing the street from the school to the entrance of the wetlands. I was stepping into the cross walk and I saw a car slowing down as it got to the crosswalk so I kept walking, the idiot did NOT stop, just kept going. I screamed at him(guessing it was a him-windows were all tinted and I couldn't see the driver). It stopped less than 6 inches from my thigh. Stopped just long enough for me to finish walking in front of him(about two feet) and kept going .
Crazy drivers out there.4 -

Rita hope the dog you found is soon reunited with his family. Hope they are ok too.
Katla delighted to hear of the garden walk with your DH.

Allie that pic of Alfie.
Debbie Ack! Thankful he finally did stop. Scary!
Barbie Thankful Jake is home and walking better. Bet you are too
Almost killed the skeleton mix and winter white violets I planted last week by not watering through this warm spell. They looked ok this morning but by this afternoon they were all lying down like dead soldiers after a battle. Soaked ‘em good and most are reviving. Still getting snow peas but all the red romaine has bolted. Will choose one plant to try to get seeds from, pull the rest, and plant beets, radishes, carrots and more snow peas. At least that’s the plan. . .

Well ive been staying awske now till midnight and sleeping till 7-8 but usually straight through so i guess that's good.

Did a little happy dance when I got on the scale this morning.
When I started with MFP back in February 2015, I was a certain weight. Then I lost a whole bunch of weight.
After my husband's accident in 2018, I gained that weight back to where I was in February 2015 ... plus some!!For several years, I was really not paying attention to me.
Today, I've lost the whole "plus some" and an extra 200 grams. For the first time in years, I'm lower than my February 2015 weight. Last time I saw this weight was on my way UP in 2018-19.
And since late April/early May, I have lost 6 kg (just over 13 lbs). That was my "plus some".
I have been keeping a fairly close eye on what I've been eating. I stop eating about 8 pm or so, and don't start again till 11:30 am. Leaning toward a vegetarian diet (or what they now call 'Blue Zone').
And I've recently increased my walking over what I was doing in the past couple months.
And I've been doing stairs!! 166 flights of 20 stairs, up and down plus landings this month! Huffing and puffing up stairs, then jogging back down, seems to make a difference for me.
Machka in Oz9 -
Good Thursday!
Slow start today, but walked 13k steps. Somehow only 7 stairs ....oh well. Not getting out of bed to do them. After dinner my belly acted up. Thank goodness we got back to cabin. After an hour, a shower, a change of clothes and imodiom, we went back into town just to hang out with friends. Who knows what set it off this time, but it has been several months. Tomorrow is last day here. We load up to head home Saturday morning. I think we have contributed enough to the local economy.;)
Tracey Happy Birthday!!!
Lanette I am so proud of you! You did have an eventful day.
Rori Glad you had a great trip. It is nice that you've met a pleasant companion.
Vicki I am surprised I didn't chicken out, but really was strapped in the whole way. I would do it again.
Rebecca Love babies!
Barbie Glad Jake is home.
Debbie so glad you are okay! Scary!
Rosemarie that vacation sounds great!
Ginny Safe travels!

Heather - I hope you feel better soon. Sorry you missed your days activities.
All of you that show your activities, art and crafts have been inspiring me. I also believe as the stress is leaving, I’m getting me back.
Speaking of the stress leaving, my doctor put be off indefinitely and wrote that I would not be able to return to my former job. I submitted that along with a resignation this evening.
Now as long as I am paid properly next week and my ROE is issued I’ll be done. I also have to pick up some personal belongs and drop keys off.
Rori - it was nice to see your post.
Lanette - you are doing an incredible job of keeping everything in good shape. So lucky they caught that mouse nest, they could ruin a whole car pretty quickly.
Vicki - it’s nice to read you are having an evening out.
Lisa - I hope you had a better day today.
Rebecca - I think I’ll be celebrating all week. I saw Jonah today and we took our annual birthday selfie. It was so exciting the night he was born, it makes me feel older faster now. 😂
Saturday Kaitlyn is making supper for me and my friend is taking me out Sunday.
I can’t believe how alike Eli and Athena were at birth. He’s going to be so much fun to watch grow.
Pip - that was a lot for a rest day.
Sue - do you still rent mostly to travelling nurses?
Debbie - there are so many careless drivers out there. Glad you weren’t hit.
Barbie - it must be a huge relief to have Jake home. I hope he’s feeling better and continues to heal quickly.
Allie - I’ve been staying up later hoping I could sleep straight through, it’s not working. What’s your secret? Im so glad you’re getting this sleep.
Kylia - I think your time in the Smokies went way too fast.
I have an exam in the morning so should head to bed.

Barbara - no restrictions after removal, in fact feels much better.
Barbie - glad Jake is home.
Yes we do rent to traveling nurses. The one coming to look on Saturday is from eastern WA.

Last night I think I hit what the Victorians used to call the 'crisis'. Ugh.
This morning I felt quite awake at before 5 am, so finished reading my biography of HG Wells. Very much enjoyed it. I have been through some of the same struggles as he, and he inspired some of 'Where Am I?'
Hoping for continued improvement, but mornings with a cold are often better than evenings. This has been worse by far than covid, but I hope to bounce back a bit quicker.
We are having Edie tomorrow afternoon for her door sign project, so I hope to be compos mentis.
Waiting for DH to show the first signs.

A very short bicycle ride today ... test riding our Bike Friday folding bikes which we haven't used in a while.
Also a couple hours in the garden. Even wielding my mattock a bit!!
We're also harvesting some honey!!

Machka congratulations on the weight loss! Good job!
Barbie glad Jake is home.
Tracey congratulations on ending that bad job. It's the beginning of your next chapter.
I have two more books to read, both Nicholas Sparks, from the last batch, and then a few more arriving tomorrow, mostly James Patterson. The other thing on my list is to get my dad to pay his credit cards. This is part of a transition, and he is likely to resist my involvement. Not fun.

Machka, wow congratulations on the weight loss... You rock!
Betsy in NW WA1 -
Machka - Well done, well done, well done! To be lighter than you've been in eight years must feel soooo good. So pleased for you.
Allie - So glad you're getting your sleep schedule straightened out. When we can sleep, we can heal.
Rebecca - Can't wait to see a picture of you with young Eli and Athena, and with all that love inside your grandmama heart shining out for these two little people... Soon!
Heather - Hope the worst is over for being sick and that Johnny dodges it. Enjoy the time with Edie!
Tracey - So glad the resignation is in and you are officially done with that job. Hope all the paperwork comes through as necessary.
Annie - My heart goes out to you... to keep these people you love safe, both physically and financially, and for it to be such a struggle, must be exhausting. I marvel at your ability to take care of yourself while you're going through this--it's not always easy to remember that we have to be strong and healthy in order to take care of others. Very proud of you.
Tracey - Yesterday was one of the best days I've had in a while. Accomplished what I wanted to in terms of exercise, as well as getting bits and bobs done around the house, including vacuuming the whole house and getting dinner going. The chicken turned out extremely good. Brining is something that Corey and I are using for the first time, and it actually kept the chicken breast perfectly moist and didn't get overcooked... I like it when we tag team for dinners. He always saves my cooking, in the end, if I screw something up!

Tracey, I am so happy to hear that your messy work situation is so close to resolution. You've worked hard and persisted to reach this place.
Annie, I admire your efforts with your parents. That is a difficult job and you have been doing it with grace and dignity while caring for yourself at the same time.
Heather, Hope you feel better soon.
Jake is happy to be home, moving better, drove to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription and is still sleeping this morning as I get ready to take the dogs out for the second time.
Barbie in NW WA7 -
Hello, all,
Like Allie, I'm sleeping better again. Really got discombobulated by that steroid session a couple month's back.
Now that I've caught up with everyone, just three things on the agenda for today - want to put in some writing time this morning, work on one of my craft projects, and get started on a strength training program.
I have the weights and the resistance bands, and the exercise room set up and it's time to get them added into my routine. Resistance is just not my favorite thing to do, and I "resist," adding the exercises and weights back in each time (pun intended... ), but I know I need to get moving on it. The Mayo Clinic and the American Cancer Society agree that strength training benefits include:- Increased muscle mass: Muscle mass naturally decreases with age, but strength training can help reverse the trend.
- Stronger bones: Strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of fractures.
- Joint flexibility: Strength training helps joints stay flexible and can reduce the symptoms of arthritis.
- Weight control: As you gain muscle, your body begins to burn calories more easily, making it easier to control your weight.
- Balance: Strengthening exercises can increase flexibility and balance as people age, reducing falls and injuries.
I also need to remember that it's more than just about lifting weights. Still from the ACS:- Abdominal crunches
- Lunges
- Pushups
- Squats
- Step exercises
- Arm curls
- Kicks
- Squats
- Other exercises
I tend to substitute super plie's and yoga stretches for the lunges and squats, but if I can get my knees back in reasonably good shape, I may be able to add those back in slowly.
All of it is important, but balance is the biggest one for me right now. With the constant issues with dizziness with the various meds, I need to be able to recover if I stagger. My maternal grandmother's broken hip began her decline, and my mother's stroke either caused her to fall and hit her head or the stroke was caused by the fall where she hit her head on the back porch stoop.
Many of you and those you love have also broken wrists or other bones in falls, and my best friend actually broke her jaw a couple years back in a fall walking up some icy steps. I would like to avoid a catastrophic fall if it's possible, and do it without having to shuffle like a timid little old lady! If I do fall, strengthening the bones and joint flexibility can only help to improve the outcome.
If it sounds like I'm trying to convince myself, it's because I am. I REALLY hate resistance work, but once I get going, I will do OK.
Later, my dearlings,
Hope it is (or was) a good day!
Love from a cool, nearly fall morning in Arkansas,

Thanks ... but, it's been about 4 years.
After hitting the weight I am right now in early 2015, I lost over 25 kg (thanks to being able to log my food on MFP) and kept it off until my husband's accident in 2018. Then I gradually put it all back on ... plus an extra 6 kg over the past 5.5 years.
I probably eased past this weight on the way up about 4 years ago. I know I was just slightly over this weight in 2020.
Now I just need to lose the 25 kg again.
But my first minor goal is 3 kg.
Thank you all ... it feels good to be rid of those 6 kg!
After all my husband and I have been through in the past 5.5 years, I'm starting to feel a bit more like myself again. I kind of feel like I'm back at the beginning again.

I have a basket of hand weights (dumbbells) next to my chair (my spot) when I'm at home. I can easily completely forget they are there, but if I'm reaching for my headphones or colouring pens, I can't help but see them.
That doesn't work every time, but sometimes it reminds me to pull out a couple and do some upper body weights.
I did some tonight.
