Hi to All!
Michele-You can get a lacrosse ball to roll too. That's what it looks like in Heather's pic. It's very firm, so on the more sensitive areas, it may be too much. For the big muscles, it's great.
It's been a crazy summer for me...Fly away wedding, mission trip to Honduras, niece and sister visiting, friends here for 3 weeks (whew, that was a long time to have house guests), a week to catch up on work, then planning a big event for a big conference and get ready to go again. I'm tired.
When I got back from Honduras, I was 2 pounds down. Then having all the guests ruined that. I made bad choices in the name of enjoyment. I think it's time for me to accept I'm not going to lose the weight. I may as well ditch my wardrobe and start over. The positive is that I'll have less stuff.
Ladies near Calgary, what is your weather like now? We're headed there soon.
Also, what is the tipping policy in Canada? It's extreme in the US and I know it's not likely as much in Canada, but I like to be prepared.
Annie-Just hugs. You've been going through so much. Hang in there. You're doing a great job.

We are leaving in the morning for Woodard OK to help celebrate DH's uncle's 90th birthday. Get to see family we have not seen in years. Will leave early in the morning and stay the night. Come home Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to getting away.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE
Woodward, OK? I ask because we jokingly call it Woodard.

Ok Oakie and Vicki - Woodard/Woodward - I double took both times because there is a small lake near here that is Woodward reservoir and I could not imagine any reason anyone would come that far to go to that lake... But then it dawned on me that names are used over and over again.... LOL2

Worked and then we put more of the blocks around the pool. Not even going to go for my walk, I’m so beat. It was my job to take the big rocks and put them around so they don’t looks out of place. It was also my job to clean up the little rocks so that Vince can put down the landscape fabric. Then we went to Lowe’s to buy more blocks. Tomorrow we think we might bring in the christmas decorations
Lynette – isn’t it frustrating when you find something in a smaller size like your milk?
Went to the soup kitchen today and had two of the potato wedges. The guy who made them is a really good cook, but they were very spicy. I don’t think I would order them. Just sloppy joes today. I was dishing out the coleslaw and then serving. Between serving and putting the blocks around, I got in over 13,000 steps
Margaret – I keep a glass jar (with lid) next to my stove. I put all sorts of liquid things that I don’t want. I figure the more that goes in that jar, the less that goes into my septic. I even put things like the juice from sardines, egg liquids. If it doesn’t go in the jar, I try to put it in my garbage. Oh, there are some things that I have to put down the drain – but not much. We shouldn’t have a garbage disposal.
Debbie – glad alls well with your former FIL
Rita – thanks for telling me that WalMart carries a Bulletproof-type thing and that it has no flavor. I need to go to WalMart Sunday since Vince needs bananas so I might check it out. I think I’m going to have to look to see if they all contain coconut. Jess is HIGHLY allergic to coconut so I wouldn’t want it even in the house. Sure hope you get your bp under control
Annie – that’s wonderful that your mom walked!
I usually did a body pump DVD at the gym on Wednesdays but I think I’m going to do some cardio. I need to exercise first thing in the morning or it doesn’t get done. Unfortunately, the gym doesn’t open until 1 on sundays and that’s too late for me. So I go Wednesday mornings.

Michele I am going to be more mindful of what goes down our drains. Like the idea of saving containers for the liquids that you want to avoid putting down your drain. I am also keeping a box of baking soda to rub into a greasy pan I have already removed the grease. DH likes his sausages!
Spent a quiet afternoon with Drew a son's house. Nice to relax. In the morning I practiced with my singing bowl. I might play it in an upcoming anthem in our church. I am going to bring it on Wednesday so they can hear its tone. I bought it at a shop where the bowls came from Tibet. I tried a number of them and this one had the tone I liked. When you make it sing it sounds like the whales in the ocean. Our choir director is trying to find more diversified music. This one also calls for a Native American flute. I think if they like it I think it should start the anthem as an introduction.3 -

margaretturk wrote: »Busy getting things maintained or repaired. Tuesday took car in at 7:30 got it back at 4. Needed alignment, oil change and transmission fluid changed. It is running better. While waiting I spent 2 hours trying to unclog the kitchen sink. Yesterday morning had the pro come out to snake it and hydro clean it. Both best left to a pro. I learned some tips on how to care for pipes. If at all possible no egg shells, coffee grounds, grease, stringy veggies, potato skins etc. I also moved the trash can that was sitting on the main drain cover in the basement. Bits from my shredding were falling near it. I also need to change the drain covers. They are now cast iron and they start to degrade in about 5 years. Those bits of rust get into your pipes and can cause problems too. It was pricey but told DH I learned from the technician too to avoid future problems. I always do this when I have someone help us with a problem we are not equipped to fix. I saved his card and put him on my who to call if I have this type of problem. I also wrote him a good review to share with his boss. Today is a shopping day. Hope all is well with everyone!
At our place ...
All of this: egg shells, coffee grounds, stringy veggies, potato skins etc. goes into compost to be used on the garden.
All cardboard and paper waste (not toilet paper and tissues) gets shredded to be used as mulch or laid down intact to reduce the weeds.
And if possible plastic containers get recycled as seedling pots.

Machka - that’s a strong wind
Beth - what a wonderful thing to witness. I’m so happy your Mom and her BF were able to visit.
Barbie - Sorry for you and Jake, I hope you find a good fit for the both of you when it’s time and that Bodhi finds a woman that needs a dog to love on.
I started a new session this week that has involved a lot of reading. It’s been a tiring week for my eyes.
I found out on Thursday that work didn’t cancel my benefits early so I was able to refill our prescriptions for the next three months. What a relief that was! I knew that I should have them until the end of the month but was concerned they would try to mess it up.
I did receive my final pay today and there are errors.
Yesterday the stuff from my office showed up via courier. In the box was a prepaid addressed envelope for me to mail the keys back.
Machka - - If I do eat in the morning, it's like I've turned a switch on, and I'll clean out the house, eating anything that's not moving and maybe the occasional thing that is. Holding off means I'll have more control throughout the day.
This is me. I thought I was just really strange.
Tina - I am two and a half hours north of Calgary. The next 2 weeks are supposed to be low 20’s - high teens mostly sunny.
As for tipping - most of the machines here have from 10-25% as the options. I am a firm believer that tipping is for good service though and tip accordingly. Probably comes from my years of waitressing.
Today my wonderful son in law installed a new front door. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this but we have 70’s paneling on that wall and when we had to make the opening larger and move it to the left some the panelling needed to be removed. So we ended up buying drywall to do that side of the hallway. Which in turn will also involve painting the dining room and kitchen. That was more than I wanted to do, but it was on the list for eventually. I think it will be good, our old door unless it was locked, which couldn’t be done without a hip check, you could see the light from outside. Last year some snow blew in under the door. Should help the heating bill.
Lisa - I saw the shirt idea. I like it! Thanks!

Tracey - Great that you've got a new front door! It looks sturdy! Our (very old) front door has a LOT of gaps, and if it's windy in the winter, it whistles through. I'm going to put some draught stuff down the closing side soon to see if it will help. It's the original door for the house, with lovely stained glass, so we can't change it, but it is a heat drain. I might also do something about the letter box in the door, which you can also see light through. Gas and electricity are now so expensive, any little helps. So far we haven't had the heating on, but it is getting chilly in the morning.
It's Edie's 10th birthday today. I hope the furry jacket that I bought her fits. My son came to pick it up last night. He had just had seven girls at their house for a 'film night' after school party. Knackered.
I can't believe she is 10 years old.
I couldn't love anybody more.

Yeah, it was steady at about 50 km/h and gusting 80-100 km/h all day. The next couple days were a bit better but not much. All the small things in our yard are scattered everywhere.
But the worst thing was that, because of our dry winter, several bushfires in various parts of the state started (including one quite close to where we live) and they're still working on controlling one.
And I'm pretty sure the very early cruise ship came in here because of that wind. Cruise ships don't usually start here until toward the end of October. I don't know where this one blew in from, but everyone headed straight for the chemist (pharmacy) and they were organising themselves outside to send in one person from a group there were so many people in the place. Perhaps they were clearing out the Travel Calm and Ginger!!
It was quite warm here on Monday, but the temp dropped right off during the week so that we even had snow at higher elevations.
I misjudged the temperature on at least 2 days and didn't have a warm enough jacket for morning and evening, so I got a bit chilled ... which is unusual for me.
It's been a wild week!!
No wonder I'm feeling a little off.

Machka and Tracey “- If I do eat in the morning, it's like I've turned a switch on, and I'll clean out the house, eating anything that's not moving and maybe the occasional thing that is.” Me too, especially a carb heavy breakfast on arising.
Vicki safe travels!
Debbie there was a bob cat sighting in our neighborhood last week, ‘nother reason we don’t have chickens. Tumble is a tempting enough tidbit.
Rita glad you called the doctor about the new meds. If the cardiologist doesn’t call you Monday, take the reins and call them. Referrals here fall through the cracks and have to be shepherded through.
Annie great news about your mom.

Bit confused by the times you mention.
I'm awake until about midnight ... then I go to bed.
What time did you go to bed?
And then what?
When we close our eyes, lie still and relax, we usually fall asleep ... even if we don't think we've fallen asleep. Our brains are a little funny sometimes. We think we've been awake for hours, but if those hours feel like they're going by fairly quickly, we've actually been asleep but just a light sleep.
Some things that help me include:
- making sure that the room is dark.
- wearing an eye mask to hold my eyes closed.
- wearing ear plugs to block noise.
- making sure my bed is comfortable ... and for me, that means a nest of pillows.
- doing a relaxing technique where I tense up my toes, and then relax them. Then I tense up my feet, and relax them. Then I tense up my calves, and relax them. And so on up the body. Usually by the time I reach my thighs, I'm asleep.
- to calm my thought, I pray, "sing" hymns in my head, or think about shoes. If I am sleeping lightly, I'll wake up several times (feeling like I have not been sleeping, but knowing I have because 20 minutes has passed quickly) and resume praying, singing or thinking about shoes.
- sometimes a lavender scent is relaxing. I have lavender oil which I sprinkle on my bedding once in a while.
Before bed, I have a bedtime "ritual" to get me ready for bed.
- turn the room lights off or down
- put soft music on ... that's for about the last hour before I go to bed.
- my computers and phone go to a night setting about an hour before bed to reduce the blue light.
- drink a cup of some variation of chamomile tea.
- once in bed, I'll read a little bit before turning all the lights off.
Other than sleeping and reading, I don't spend time in bed. That helps my brain know that the bed is for sleeping.
My TV, computers, etc. are all out in the lounge room.
I find it also helps to be active during the day.
Just a few things that help me.

Good Saturday,
Trying to describe 2023.....it has not been a bad year, but definitely full of potholes and switchback turns. I need to find my calm. Have been trying to find someone to build a new garage for over a year. So far no one is interested in even giving us a quote. Found out yesterday that our 8 yo split system in the master bedroom addition has to be replaced. Coils leaking. Home got re-evaluated by county. Value went up 100k! If we were selling that would be good but for property taxes that just sucks. The upside is that we can afford these things, but like Tracey's door project, it just all adds up. I told DH on Wednesday that my "squirrels " were all over the place. He asked what was new. (Meaning I couldn't stay focused on anything)
Eating I realized today that the reason I am eating everything under the sun....... the temps are cooling and my body is prepping for winter. I have been starving for 3 days! Generally, I am hungry between 11-6 and Generally eat then. But I am getting hangry by 830am and feeding the beast way too much at dinner. Craving crunchy salty. 😫 Need to rein the squirrels and belly in before I am back in the zone I don't want to be in.
Annie Good news about mom. Hugs for you! You do have all of us in your pocket!
Garbage disposals Being on a septic system means that we shouldn't have one, but we do. I only use it so that I don't have to worry about small items. It is not for bulk food disposal. I always hated doing dishes as a kid when soggy items (bread and cereal) would be in the sink water until you turned on the disposal. YUCK!!!!! Still don't like soggy things.
I know there was much more, but .......
Healing thoughts!
Lots of Encouraging thoughts!
Pride in accomplishments!
Make the best decisions you can at the moment.

I skimmed through the posts. I hope to catch up in the next day or two. I think everyone is doing okay.
I hope so. Annie, I am glad your Mom is doing well! Machka: I am an black, ice coffee drinker. I either make 1 or purchase 1 at McDonalds every morning.
This morning I will have lunch with a friend and then head to the gardens for my outing. I have quite a bit to do before I can leave but I am looking forward to it. I hope I don't get tired. I do tire easily. I have lost another couple of pounds so I allowed myself a donut this morning with breakfast to help with energy!
The daughter of a friend of mine has a widower friend that just became a widow and really misses his wife. She wants me to meet him. I have mixed feelings. Of course just meeting him would be fine. I had said I was interested in having a partner again. But when I think about the logistics further down the line I can't imagine it working out. I don't want to leave my house. We worked so hard to put the house together. We had so little money that everything was purchased a piece at a time. I didn't have end tables for the living couch until about 10 years ago. The house has been a great place of solace to me since Paul passed.
I hope everyone has a good day.
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia9 -
Tracey - Sent you a friend request, and a message directly after with a T-shirt suggestion that wasn't appropriate for this thread. Pretty sure the message won't go through, because we're not "friends," here yet, but if you accept the friend request, I can resend it. Love the door! We need to look at all of ours before the cold weather gets here, too. Projects always seem to expand before they're done.
Speaking of projects -This morning, Corey and I are supposed to go up to Home Depot in town and pick up a couple base cabinets. Four feet of the ten-foot bread station that we put together has basically become the place to put things for the back yard, like gloves and baskets and rubber boots and other things so we can pick veggies, weed the garden, mow, etc., and that kind of dirt and grime going in and out doesn't work for me for food preparation.
So, we're finally going to make that space work the way it should. Hard to tell by looking at this picture, but the usable space is actually 15 feet long by 9 feet wide (4.57mx2.75m).
The other thing is I really want the big window completely open and accessible again. We can't even open the windows right now because it's covered up. It's got a wide sill, nearly big enough to be a window seat. When you look at the picture, the cedar chest at right will go under the window, and the small fridge will go under the counter edge at the front of the picture. Still thinking about the little ice machine, haven't decided yet.
Anyway, the overall notion is that we're going to buy two 24-inch wide base cabinets with doors and drawers (the two things we're not good at building!). Then we'll cut four feet off the countertop we put on the bread station, and pivot it around to become what it already is - storage and a flat surface for things as we go in and out of the back door. Then we'll move the other six feet of bread station across to the opposite side, where the fridge and chest are now, and it will still be plenty of work surface with space under it for bread supplies.
We may eventually put six feet of base cabinets under that piece of countertop too, but not yet. They're expensive! So, that's the plan, anyway. Corey's on his second cup of coffee, so I'm going to go in and start clearing that area out, get stuff out of the way. Hopefully, I can get to my resistance work later. We'll see.
Rosemarie - Good to see your post, glad you're feeling better. Zero advice from me on meeting men after being widowed, but pleased to see you're thinking about yourself. You were Paul's main caregiver for a long time, and deserve time and space to find out who you are now.
Happy Saturday, ladies,
Love from Lisa in soon-to-be-sunny Arkansas

Rosemarie - Just because you like a man doesn't mean you have to marry them and move house. Many older people these days keep their own living spaces and enjoy the occasional companionship. That sounds great to me.
Lisa - Great that you are streamlining your kitchen. What fun!
I chucked out another couple of kids books and a dress. Got to wash it before I give it to the charity shop. It's nice, but no longer my style.
Then I decided to tackle the under sink cupboard in the utility room. Threw out loads of stuff, including cleaning products I no longer use, old teatowels I kept 'just in case', and other junk. It now looks fabulous and I know what I've got! So happy.
I've decided to try out the laundry sheets instead of my usual powder. Better for recycling etc. We need non- bio, sensitive skin, so I've ordered that. The powder is messy. I'm going to clean that area now and then hoover under the sofa cushions.
DH is out at the park to see the grandchildren, especially Edie. Apparently she loves the jacket and it fits!!!! I'm not quite trusting my thigh, but it is making progress with the massage.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxx

Taking a break from clearing so I don't overdo, and ran across this. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/sep/23/eat-beans-and-scratch-your-own-back-expert-advice-on-how-to-age-better-inside-and-out . Lots of general stuff, quite interesting. Best quote: "Zoom into moments of joy and zoom out in more challenging situations." I do tend to lose the big picture when under stress.3

Annie-good news about your Mom. I agree you should keep information for the next time (and maybe research a bit more if you haven't).
Rosemarie-it doesn't hurt to meet someone. I have "dated" one person since my DH died. I enjoyed conversation with him but he likes to drink too much and I didn't want that. I am not saying I won't date/have a relationship again but I am not actively looking. Also-not sure I want to live with someone else. I figure it will work out like it is supposed to. If you want companionship-test it out.
Negative Covid test the morning. Hoping to have another one Monday morning and I can be done with mask.
Went to store this am. Nice to wander around even with a mask on. Heading to drugstore now to pick up a coulple of prescriptions and a couple of Covid home test. Will order some of the free ones but like keeping them on hand. Since I am around people a lot and go to large meetings, I will test a couple of times a month (usually before I go to hand out with some friends who are 10 years or so older than me!).
I am looking forward to cleaning house today after drug store and walk. Going to open windows to air things out. If I stay busy, I may not miss the baby shower as much! (to be hones-I have never really been a big shower fan, but this one would have been ok)
Take care all,

@LisaInArkansas - I made a mistake and hit decline on the friend request. Can you send again please?
I sent one to you as well.

I took it pretty easy today.
Slept about 12 hours last night ... but was still a bit tired during the day.
Laundry - put away clothes, washed clothes, hung clothes to dry.
A little bit of weeding while walking Rhody outside.
Working on an event and route map for my cycling club.
Colouring.
The lights are dim.
My computer screen has switched to night mode (more yellow than blue - blue light late at night is apparently not very good)
I've got light jazz on the stereo. A beautiful version of "As Time Goes By" is playing right now.
I have drunk most of my chamomile blend tea.
And I am about to adjourn to the bedroom to get comfy and read a bit.
Machka in Oz2 -
My son made this gluten free cake for the birthday girl.
DH got to the fête in the park. Bea and Edie entered this gluten free cake, 'The Tree of Life', into the cake competition. I don't know where it came.
DH had a slice. Pronounced it good.
