Allie - Those tastes and smells and even the sound of cooking from our childhoods never leave us, do they. Sounds like a wonderful memory.
Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends...

Whidislander wrote: »SophieRosieMom wrote: »Tracey - glad your wrist doesn't have anything major going on with it. Did the doc suggest ice? My DH's cousin lives in Quebec and came to visit ten years ago. He was not happy back then with the doctor situation and said he knew of folks that drove down to the states to get medical attention. Haven't spoken with him recently so I have no idea if that's still the case. We are seeing doctor shortages in the US in some areas too. I think the pandemic wore them out and they made the decision to retire early. I know of a couple that went into telehealth.
Margaret - you summed it up quite nicely. I appreciate that we can vent frustration and sadness here in a safe place. The comments and conversation this afternoon made me think of my maternal grandmother who lived on the farm next to us when I was a kid. Every Sunday she'd go to church and every morning she'd read "The Upper Room." She talked to Jesus all day long. She didn't drive but walked all over the neighborhood to look in on sick neighbors, and take them produce from her garden in the summer. Sometimes she'd take one of us grandkids along to walk with her and we knew to sit quietly while the adults talked. Some of the neighbors had rather coarse language, but she never mentioned anything or was critical unless we made a comment to her later. She'd say something like "We aren't supposed to talk like that, but we are all sinners and Jesus loves us anyhow." But if she discovered anyone was a thief or liar, she had plenty of criticism for that type of activity. Whew! Gosh I miss her. I think she's in charge of the band of Angels doing their darndest to keep me out of trouble, lol.
What a lovely flower - water lily?
Kim - when I saw the picture of that troll I thought "where's its outfit?" I think we had clothes for them too. And we called them "Dammit dolls". No idea why.
Rebecca - I know I've asked before but can't remember what you said - does your sis sell her paintings? I remember the beautiful ones of birds painted on sheets of music. Eli is growing so fast. Thanks for the photos, as always.
Terri -
Annie- having your sis come after she retires and spend some time to do the cleaning is a great idea. Glad you found the bills! Again, many hugs - you are in the position of being both parent and child. I think you are handling it well. All you can do is the best you can.
Well, ladies, here's the newly stained deck. I should have taken before photos - prior to Roger pressure washing it. It could use another coat of stain but I'm not concerned. It's better than it was and will be mostly waterproof this winter.

Yes she does sell them at a arts and craft fair that's coming up. Its down in the Salem Oregon area. She is excited and hopes to paint about 30 items to sell. I like that her paints are so sweet. Simple.🤗💖

She does incredible work!!
Thanks, she's a creative soul. The things she can do amaze me sometimes. She has been doing felt embellishing, where she sews small felt pieces onto a surface like its a quilt. Those little paintings each take her a couple hours, then sometimes we will be video chatting and shes painting at the same time, creating things in 20 minutes. Her home is a mixture of country, farmhouse, and because she has an artists eye, there are interesting items put in clusters that are magical. My husband says its too much junk, and yes if you look at the room as a whole it might seem to some. To me, it makes my eyes draw to this, oh and that, sort of thing.

Barbara ~ So glad to hear you were able to speak to Katla. I hope the health problems were not related to her husband.
Michelle ~ Great Advice from the ladies! Go visit your grandson with bells on your feet. If Vince does not want to go, go by yourself.
Kelly ~ Prayers for your sister! That sounds very worrisome and I can appreciate your fears.
Lisa ~ The photo of your lawn down to the mailbox is beautiful. Shows all the work that you and Cory have done.
I have had a large Ninja Air Fryer Convection Oven since they first came out. It cooks great but is a pain to clean. Something must have boiled over in it (maybe lasagna or pizza) and I have used Goo Be Gone, SOS pads, and ammonia trying to clean it. It is still full of burnt on foods and impossible. Would love to chuck it and get another type but have too much money being spent on other things right now and can't justify it.

Today’s gratitude: hair conditioner that really detangles, maybe I should try it on Tumble? Abundant, clean, hot water.
Katla (@myvt9v4crh, @Katla49) Thanks for taking my call. It was so very good to hear your voice. Sorry to hear that family health problems have kept you so busy. We all look forward to seeing you back on mfp soon. ((hugs))
Betsy praying for favorable test results and safe travels.
KJ always happy to see you popping in. Prayers for your sister and family.

I thought so! Just rolled up cardboard padding. I love costumes that the kids look absolutely comfortable in. Funny story. When the boys were probably 4, 8 and 13 yrs old, they all decided to wear "Black Ops" tactical gear, with camouflage face paint. We were living on a street, one house after another in Vallejo CA. So with each house one would crouch down giving the hand signals to the other to approach the house. You know, pointing to a brother, pointing to the door, and the fingers making walking motions. I was at the sidewalk laughing, and they would give me the zip it motion. When the door would open they would be normal, because it was candy. The homeowners would ask where was their bucket was and they'd happily each point to their backpack. It was a fun time!

Thanks all for the compliments on my sisters paintings. The fact that she's painting, joining art shows, and getting out socially is testament to her healing from her abrupt husband's passing last year. Its a year of firsts for her, and each thing brings her to tears, but she marches on. If she didn't have the farmhouse and all the work it takes to keep a 1875 home in good standing, her cat Hansel and dog Tucker, and her art, she would be having a worse time of it.

grandmallie wrote: »Talking about polenta and grits.. my dad didn't cook alot but 2 things he did make were corn oysters at least thats we called them and fried corn meal mush
And we loved it..
Both very simple to make
Creamed corn ,an egg and a couple tablespoons of flour whip together and drop tablespoon size dollops into a hot oiled cast iron pan then flip after a minute or so and then serve with butter. Quick and easy and oh so yummy
The corn meal mush..
He used to get the canister of cornmeal and make it per directions and then put it in a loaf pan and refrigerate. Next morning he would take thin slices and fry again in a cast iron skillet and serve with butter and maple syrup..
Only place I have ever seen it and it was quite a few years ago was Bob Evans restaurant.
Went over and got Homer outside..now im going to attempt to puy a shoe rack together wish me luck..
my grandma(dad's mom) made fried mush- It was something only she made. She was a simple but good cook- She had to cook a lot with 10 kids.
I need to make some but will make a small batch as I will be the only one to eat it most likely- Son might eat it.
Somewhere I have her recipe for chili and her buns-everyone loved both of them2 -
Happy, happy birthday Rosemarie!
Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate today!
I had a wonderful day yesterday. Friends from church invited me to go with them to the Seattle Symphony. It was an all Russian concert and the conductor was amazing. She burned one heck of a lot of calories during that concert. The cello soloist was excellent and very intense. One of the things I miss most about living in SD is the SD Symphony. My DH and I had season tickets for nearly 40 years. I really dislike driving in big city traffic so have not gone to the symphony here but a very few times, however my friends drove so I did not have to. We have tickets to 2 more concerts next spring.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA9 -

Eating crow, happy but scratching her head in SW WA State
The way these ads work is completely automated. They are usually random or based on things you "like" or previously clicked on or watched. There is no person involved in placing the ads. If one is found to be a scam, that's when people get involved. In this case, it may be a scam, but they also sent you something (as opposed to just taking your money), so it's a grey area.
In addition, it could be completely legit. If someone bought "forever" stamps at a lower rate, they're usable.
Debbie-I know it's typical to vent frustrations about our partners more often than we sing praises, but your relationship with your DH just seems so unhappy whenever you post. I hope you can find joy sometime soon.
Michele-I'm with KJ. Just accept the invitation and enjoy the time you've been offered with PJ.
Car trouble again for the Mister. He likely will just have to get another one sooner than he anticipated. It's starting to cost too much to fix.

Yes, and sometimes they'll start with something that's a grey area to see if people will click on it. Then, for the ones who did, the next set of ads might be on the blacker side of grey.
As you say, it's all automated ... bots, AI, etc.
Ads and those quizzes and things are dumped into various social media platforms ... AI learns who clicks on those things, and sends out more, all the while gathering information ...
You can kind of shut down some of it by keeping on top of your FB (and other social media settings) ... and by never clicking on anything you haven't specifically chosen to "like" or "follow".

Had our group Zoom. P was very philosophical. She saw her mother a few days before her death and she was happy, and all dressed up in her best, on the computer, ordering clothes. She told P she had given her money to buy some 'decent clothes' . The night before she went to a film show at the home for her favourite film, and had a glass of sherry. She died suddenly with a huge cardiac arrest or stroke, the next morning, getting up and about. Would not have known anything about it.
There is no funeral, but they are debating whether to send the ashes back to Wales, or scatter them locally.
It was nice that we all shared our experiences of our parents' deaths. The great grandchildren are being very imaginative with their sweet memorials.
So, as good a departure as one could have wished at 96.
I'm feeling less neurotic now, as is usual with me. The closer it gets, the better! Will start packing tomorrow.

MFP Weekly Check-in for October 9, 2023
Kylia in Ohio - 128.5 ! up 2 pounds! I said eating like I was would come back to haunt me. I am thankful that my hunger has leveled out and I have the tools to get back where I want to be. Now to just implement those tools.
Debbie in Napa Valley CA - Exactly the same as last week. Need to work harder.
RVRita in Roswell NM - Did not do so well this week. Too much Halloween candy! Up 1.5 pounds. But I think some of it is water gain due to some meds I’m taking. Any excuse, right! 🤪
Lanette SW WA State – weight staying under 170 – which is OK for my height (5’ 8 ½”) and age. Goal is clothing fitting better, and making progress overall. Health, at this stage, is priority over what the scale says anyhow.

Margaret ... well said.
Thank you ladies for the kind words about my grass seeding photo! We were very tired at that point and acting silly. The grass germinated before it got cold. Yay! It's only going to be in the 40s this week and rain and rain and rain. We have a green sheen over all of that hay ... except for a few places that the chickens ate more seed than I thought. Hopefully it will get a little bit more growing in before winter.
Lanette... yes, the neighbors are supposed to be moving soon. I liked the chickens, but I won't be sad to see their vicious dog go. Of course there are zoning restrictions here and they pushed the envelope. For the number of animals they own, they should be on at least 5 acres. They're on an acre lot. Which is why they're moving ... they told me they had "outgrown their yard."
Rebecca ... I just smile every time you write that you chatted with your oldest and your youngest!
Betsy ... sending prayers that your sister's tests bring good news.
Kelly ... glad to hear that your sister has been getting some good news regarding her cancer!
DrKatieBug ... the talk about vitamins made me realize that a change to my vitamin D might be the cause of increased knee pain. My vitamin D levels are at the upper end of accepted ranges and my doctor asked me to cut back ... which I've done. I forgot that the last time I tried this my knees complained then too. So I'm going to go back to my normal dosage and see what happens.
Attended a wedding last night. A lovely venue where they have the ceremony outdoors and then dinner under large tents and a barn. Sadly, the heavens opened up in a down pour right at the time the ceremony was to begin. They said their vows inside the dining tents, but it just wasn't the same. The sun did peek out for a little bit and I could see that their photographer was making use of it with the fall foliage as a backdrop. Risky business scheduling outdoor weddings in October... and it was cold!
Today, we recorded our Buffalo Bills playing football (they were in London) so we could watch the game after church. Hoped no one would give updates at church, but of course they did. Still watched the tape. Not a great day for the Bills.
Picked two bushels of apples yesterday from our tree (still loads to pick or let the deer enjoy) and spent the game peeling them for pies that I'll freeze. Fireside Apples. Didn't expect the tree to produce this year but the apples are large and blemish-free. Go figure. Used my new fruit picker! Where has this tool been all my life? Never had to get the ladder out and I made certain to pick the largest apple at the top!
Beth near Buffalo
I smile too. They're just great guys, and my heart gets all warm and fuzzy when I ponder them now. Poor eldest in Guam is getting ready for typhoons #2 of this year! He's got his scooters in the house, and his van and other scooters parked tightly in the garage. Hopefully it will just skim his island.🙏💖

Well did my 9 miles3 -
I tell you, I am having a reaction to the bug bites I got yesterday. Now my right (unfortunately) hand is so swollen that I’m having a hard time holding a pencil. And is it ever itchy! I remembered the blowdryer thing so by the time I remembered it at least I got a bit of sleep last night. It’s more swollen now than when I went to bowling earlier. Putting ice on it, but don’t know how much that’ll help
M and barbie and everyone else who commented – this is only October, Denise was talking about June. Unfortunately, she has champagne tastes on a beer budget. But like I said, we shall see what happens. I’m certainly not holding my breath. I’ve been disappointed too many times before.
Barbara – thanks for the update about Katla. So sorry to hear about the health issues
Took a walk to Food Lion. Ordered a cake for this guy who is coming back to Newcomer bowling after breaking his hip at bowling last year.
Lisa – hope your cardiologist appt goes well
Annie – yea you used the bike!
Happy Thanksgiving to all from Canada
Rebecca – so glad all’s well
Allie – I’m so sorry that happened to you. At least you realize what happened and are cancelling your cards, etc
Time for dinner then ceramics
