Very nice run. Did some very slow and slightly faster intervals. Hence didn't go for speed. I just want to be able to run a bit longer again.

I was a Biology major but took all of the math classes that my college had to offer at the time. I wound up being an electrical engineer in the Air Force - getting my degree in two years with them paying since I had had all of that math. It sounds like your teacher was a great one @tarun_yadavA !
Nice run @yirara !
Monthly question: Do you call out people who call a 5K a marathon? I was talking with a friend the other day who said her daughter was running a marathon on Thanksgiving morning. I knew that probably wasn't the case, knowing her and her daughter, so I asked, "How far is she running?" "About 3 miles." So, I did say, "That is a 5k, not a marathon." Her response was, "Whatever." (sarcastically). I just let that go. But it helped me realize why I need you all in my life because you know a 5K Turkey Trot is NOT a marathon!8 -

I ran 1.5 miles yesterday for my streak. It was about 55°F. It had rained overnight, so it was damp, but not too bad for a short run.
Today it was drizzling and about 55° F. The weather app said the rain would be ending, but it was pretty drizzly for the entire 10 miles.
Sorry about the siblings @AlphaHowls. Hang in there.

Morning everyone
Got in 5.3M this morning (at 09"32).
@SummerSkier @daria0919 @quilteryoyo wow! Super impressive ladies 🙌 all mathematics and science disciplines!
@daria0919 what area of math do you/did you teach? Pure or applied or stats/OR ?4 -
Checking in, have had a few rough days?/weeks? I don't know. Caught *another* yucky cold and am still not over it. Have been mostly staying in bed. Finished watching the Turkish TV series and started the next one, LOL. And watching my bird friends fighting over seed.not the best picture, my window is dirty and they fly away if I move too close.
@quilteryoyo visa office visit went smoothly, but there are continued long delays. They stopped blaming covid and now are blaming the war in Ukraine (with extention laws passed to cover them for not processing applications in anything resembling a timely manner). Maybe we'll hear something a year from now? The good news is I'm getting better at navigating the application process, AND we have stamps in our passports showing we're here legally while we wait.
@AlphaHowls sorry about the family drama. It can be so much harder when it's family. My summer experiences confirmed that (and yes, I changed flights to come home early as I couldn't take any more of it). I hope you can work things out with your siblings. Or at least be at peace with yourself about what happened.
@Scott6255 great idea about posting significant events from your RTY!
@quilteryoyo a 5k marathon HAHAHA! I'd probably tell them, maybe in a confused way like "a marathon is over 26 miles, are you sure that's what she's doing?" and then laugh about it later with my runner friends. It's your friend's sarcastic "whatever" that gets me 😆. I mean, if you run 8 or 9 Turkey Trots in one day, then yes, you could call that a marathon.
8 -
Great running @kgirlhart , @tarun_yadavA , and @Zaxa2021 !
@polskagirl01 I'm sorry you are having a harder time right now. I hope you start feeling some better soon. I love the bird picture. They can be so greedy! I'm glad that you are able to show that you are legally in the country at least. Hope all of that works itself out soon. I agree with the 5k vs marathon comment. Not sure why she was sarcastic. I guess she didn't like being called out on her lack of running knowledge.4 -

Good Monday morning/afternoon everyone! I met three friends at 5:00 am for a 5 mile run today. Temp was nice at around 37F and there didn’t seem to be as much traffic as a usual non-holiday work week. Not very many people in the office today and I love it that way!
@quilteryoyo – I would have definitely said something like “She’s running 26 miles on Thanksgiving morning?” BTW, our track club is timing the Greeneville Turkey Trot again this year. I’m hoping we have enough volunteers but I may end up driving down there to help with it. Are you running in it?
@polskagirl01 – Sorry you have a cold again but I love the picture of all the birds. Such pretty little creatures.
@Scott2655 – I also love the idea of identifying the milestones in your RTY journey!
@tarun_yadavA – I would have picked the grocery store trip hands down over any sort of math! I didn’t get a very good foundation in math due to changing schools when younger and have always struggled with that subject. The grocery store, however, I love going to the grocery store.
@martaindale – How was your camping trip? Glad the kid decided to hang out with mom for the weekend!
Hiking summary below if interested:I left work a little early on Thursday and we drove south 3 hours to Fontana, NC. We rented a little cabin at Fontana Village. On Friday, we met our shuttle driver at 6:00 am and he drove us to the starting point of our hike. We then hiked 19.62 miles (5,008 feet of elevation gain) of the Appalachian Trail from Winding Stair Gap to Tellico Gap. It was cool starting out but climbing the mountains warms you up quickly. It was cloudy and misted rain off and on all day but not enough to pull our rain gear out of our packs and put them on. We saw one other hiker and 2 deer hunters scoping out a place to hunt. We were about a mile from where our parked car was when we passed 2 different sets of hikers heading to the fire tower. The tower was almost 9 miles from where we passed them and we told them there was no way they could make it there and back before dark. Turns out both of them had parked where we did. They had used Google maps to find the parking area but then got on the trail heading in the wrong direction. There was another fire tower only a mile from the parking area but it was to the north and they were both heading south. We finished our hike around 4:15 pm where we had parked our car earlier that morning and drove an hour or so back to Fontana Village stopping to have dinner at their little restaurant on the way to our cabin.
Wayah Observation Tower - In 1929 a wooden fire tower was built here. In 1935, the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed this tower from quarry stone. At the time, the tower had 3 floors with the 3rd floor housing all the equipment needed for fire detection and serving as living quarters for the towermen. Use of the tower for fire detection was discontinued in 1945 and the Forest Service decided to remove the top level in 1947 and replace it with a concrete slab for public observation.

Me and my hiking friend.
On Saturday, we met our shuttle driver at 6:20 am and were on the trail at Stecoah Gap at 6:45 am. It had rained overnight and was still cloudy and cool. The sun came out around 11:00 am and warmed everything up nicely. We saw 3 other hikers heading in the opposite direction and saw 4 bear hunters who were trying to locate their dogs. We hiked 14.65 miles (4,275 feet elevation gain) and finished at the Nantahala Outdoor Center around 1:30 pm. We had lunch/dinner in their restaurant before heading home.
Saturday morning sky.
We took a quick snack break at Sassafras Shelter which was about a tenth of a mile off trail.
You can see the Nantahala River down below where we were heading.

@Teresa502 I love your hiking pictures and hiking vicariously through you. I'm glad you stayed in a cabin this time instead of camping. It's a bit cool for that at night. I thought about doing the Turkey Trot, but I need to be at my neighbor's at 11 for his get-together, so wouldn't have time. I hope it goes well and they have enough volunteers that you don't have to drive all the way from VA to help with it. BTW, you had a nice run this morning too.4

tarun_yadavA wrote: »Math... Lol - I have a Bachelors in it, no less.
But an awful teacher. Don't have patience. And end up yelling.
The problem is, as I tell my DH, the degree is in MATH not ARITHMETIC 😂
He was also my math tutor my freshman year in college and after that could not handle the advanced mathematics courses. He's more of a stats, econometrics guy. I had planned to teach but was hired out of college by a large oil company to do large scale reservoir engineering studies. From there I went more into IT doing performance and capacity analytics for large computer systems
I too have an abundance of spreadsheets and track//trend and graph all kinds of things. I think it is interesting that so many of us have similar backgrounds.

Hi everyone!
I have missed posting and running this past week + a few days! Now I’ve caught up reading .
Wow so many math experts here! I would say I’m more a jack of all trades and know a “fair” amount about many study subjects- but am an expert in well….. I get to teach students from all faculties, so I am always reading and learning about different things to “try” and keep up.
But with my own kids, my patience with learning can be limited in a very humbling way. So @tarun_yadavA , I too would have picked Aldi .
I have been really swamped between work, kids, doctor’s appointments with kids, etc, no time to post. I have only gotten 3 runs in this past week. One 4km, on 10.3, and one 11.5. So far for November, I have 100.9/200km. I don’t think I will make my goal, as the next weeks will only get busier, but I will at least attempt to surpass my mileage from last month .8 -

I ran 3.5 miles this morning. It was nice weather for running in shorts and a t-shirt at 59°F. It is supposed to get cold this week though and it will be back to trying to figure out what to wear without being overdressed.
I am not a mathematician. My degree is in business, but I work as an accountant for an oil and gas company and have for about 25 years. I also have lots of spreadsheets. I really like things to balance. But if I had to choose between helping a kid with math and grocery shopping, I'd have to go for the shopping. I just don't have the patience to teach.

@Teresa502 Thank you for sharing the hiking photos and recap. I would love to be able to hike the AT and so I am also living vicariously through you.
4 -
@Teresa502 beautiful photos! I think we all enjoyed that hike with you! Thanks for sharing.
@tarun_yadavA i primarily taught undergrad courses: all the calculus courses, linear algebra, differential equations and probability and statistics. Only graduate courses I taught were for master degree students. Some theory in those.
Dropped out of PhD program to marry and have kids. Research area was mathematical statistics.4 -

I didn't have to work today, so did some much needed housework and cleaned leaves off the porches, again. The wind was blowing pretty hard, so I did a treadmill session for my workout. I did a run/walk of 3/2 min at 4.2-4.7/3.8 mph, then 5.0 mph for 4:54 min. It felt fairly easy.
Our RTY team hit 6069 miles today - 3 x 2023! WTG ladies! @SummerSkier and @kgirlhart .6 -

@Laurz9191 I hope the doctor's appointments were scheduled and your kids weren't sick. It is hard to work in your running around life sometimes. You are doing great to do what you can, when you can! No worries about no making your arbitrary goal.
Great running @kgirlhart . I think accounting counts as being in the math business.

Re: all the math discussions...I am a Hardware/Software engineer. Had to take a lot of math courses, but honestly don't love math.
@Teresa502 awesome hiking and pics!
Got 7 good miles in this evening. Brings me to 1978...the year I got my driver's license That was one of the most defining moments in my life, both terrifying and totally liberating!

@Teresa502 - that hike looks so awesome! Makes me wish we were near the AT.@tarun_yadavA i primarily taught undergrad courses: all the calculus courses, linear algebra, differential equations and probability and statistics. Only graduate courses I taught were for master degree students.
I guess no one did the Hug a Runner challenge in Run the Year. I wouldn't have realized it was today but a friend posted a picture in FB. She isn't a runner but trains dogs and has a young Vizsla that runs and runs and is very fast. I think her tagline would be great on a shirt 😂

I know it's the end of November but I wanted to get back into running. So thought I would join for accountability9
-
Good morning everyone!
I got in 5.15M (at 09"32).
Wow @daria0919 ... That is super impressive. If someone showed me a PDE or ODE now... I'd throw them a blank look.
Only thing resembling my degree post graduating was when I worked as an Analyst at Equifax right after University. Logistic Regressions and Markov processes (likelihood of someone defaulting on their mortgage... Modelling Equivalent cost to the lender etc). Otherwise. I've forgotten it all.
Not doing anything resembling any of that now. I work as an independent Contractor in Management Consulting. At the moment working as a Lead Business Analyst on a high profile lawsuit in the UK (that has allsorts of data issues/missing data).
Anyways... @daria0919 @Laurz9191 @quilteryoyo @SummerSkier @kgirlhart @Teresa502 ladies! Super super impressed how numerate and smart everyone is here! 😊5 -
Awesome running @Scott6255 ! You know, I don't even recall the year I got my license. I guess it wasn't such a big deal for me.
I didn't realize it was hug the runner day either @shanaber ! Love the meme.
Welcome @abowersgirl ! This is a great motivational group.
Thanks @tarun_yadavA ! Great running and sounds like you have a very interesting job. I like math because it is so predictable. Economics and statistics, not so much. I really didn't like economics because it had rules, but there were always exceptions, which I can't handle. If it is a rule, it's a rule!

Welcome to the group.
Those little tracker bugs are kind of mysterious. Up in the initial first post on this thread there are some instructions. However, they can get kind of broken and stop working, or they don't work at all, and for others they work perfectly and their tickers just keep on ticking.
Good luck.6 -

I ran 6 miles this morning. I was expecting it to be cold this morning. The forecast said 48°F with 18 mph NNW winds. When I got up, it was about 52°F feels like 48°F, but it didn't seem that cold to me. I wore shorts and a t-shirt with my sleeves and gloves and an ear band. I was pretty good for about 3 miles then I was warm so I took off the sleeves and the ear band and the gloves. I did put the gloves back on and off a couple of times depending on whether I was running into the wind or not. But I was pretty comfortable and all in all it was a good run. Tomorrow is supposed to be colder, but not as windy so who knows what I'll need to wear. I really do like it when I can just throw on shorts and a tank top and be good.
