Annie, Kylia, Rita, and others in need of hugs...sent your way!
Well, I managed to clear out 2 huge boxes of clothes from my closet and dresser. I think I'll do another pass before sending them off. I just want a few outfits that I can wear out and feel good about myself. Currently, I have nothing of the sort.
A friend of mine was hit by a car while he was walking last week. He was in ICU (intensive care) with a brain bleed and cracked skull. Yesterday, we thought he was on the mend, but he passed away this morning. He wasn't even 40. It was a hit-and-run, likely a drunk driver. We were supposed to go to the opening lacrosse game in two weeks. He had season passes and I was usually his "date." I think I'll go to the game in his memory.
I was in the process of making him "get well" cookies when I got the news. It's a sad day indeed.
What makes a sad day a bit better? Seeing all the pics of the kiddos in your lives! Thanks for sharing your families.
Back to the kitchen. Baking and cooking make me feel better.

MFP Weekly Check-in for November 27, 2023
Rita in Roswell NM - I’m down 2 pounds from last week. 1 pound overall loss this month. Glad it was a loss, better than a gain!
Lanette SW WA State – weight staying steady in the range that’s best for me. Concentrating on activity I can do such as the “house walking carrying weights” and good nutrition. Back on track after too many sweets and goodies for Thanksgiving.

I am fighting with Amazon(need to call them again) about an order from a few months ago. Like you, got a box but it was empty so I contacted them. The put in a reorder and was told everything was taken care of. Then, I got an email telling me if I didn't return the original order, they were going to charge me. I contacted Amazon again. They said it was taken care of. That the email was a mistake.
Well, got my credit card bill and the charge IS on it
How am I supposed to return something I never got.
It wasn't really expensive but I am not going to pay twice for the item.

Heather About a week ago found the remains of a rabbit from a great horned owl attack in our yard. I alerted neighbors with small dogs. I am always with DrewB when I take her outside especially at night. Nature can be brutal, but the will to survive is also strong!4

Tina: So sorry about your friend. Prayers for his family and circle of friends. Such a shock for everyone.
Allie: I hope that they replace the phone.

Reading on my phone and didnt take notes. I love the photos of the Christmas decorations!
Tina...So sad about the loss of your friend. My sympathy to you on his passing.
I joined a declutter group on Facebook because I was overwhelmed bringing all the junk and boxes in the storage room downstairs. I received much support and many ideas. It was interesting learning how trash is handled in various jurisdictions. One idea was to ask the neighbors if I could put my trash in their bins. This person must live in a wonderful neighborhood. I only know a couple of neighbors and dont have that relaxed of a relationship with them.
The junk service will come on Wed and remove a good haul of trash and junk. Then I am optimistic I can do the rest myself. Meanwhile my dining room and hall have trash and junk. I hate this!

Debbie- all you have to do is dispute it with the credit card company and they will take care of the problem..thats what I did..only thing is they charged darn near 50.00 dollars for taxes and its coming from brooklyn n.y. to Connecticut through UPS.i won't get that back. But will hopefully get what I paid for the phone back..
Tina- so very sorry about your friend ,sure hope they find who hit him,and prosecute, vehicular manslaughter is no joke.
My prayers to him and his family.
Had a lovely dinner with my friends here tonight which is always nice.3 -

Prayers and Good Wishes for All of You Going Through Tough Times!
I have read and read but can't respond because I have been so busy trying to get my computer problems figured out for the last few days. I have had to reset my computer and fight with my internet provider to get my wifi settings corrected. Think I finally got it done today.
Annie ~ I laid awake last night thinking about your dad dealing with the possible loss of his beloved wife. I pray that he will be given the help he needs when that time comes.
Pip ~ Your decorations are beautiful! Everything looks so neat and orderly!
Barbie ~ Love your OWL.
Rosemarie ~ Your efforts to clean out your storage rooms are great! You would be aghast at all the things in our home that need to be dealt with. A basement full of old things from an antique shop and estate sales that never got rid of, 3 generations of family furniture, nick knacks, and clutter. I cringe to think what my son and his wife will have to deal with at some point. I and my husband have clothes from ourselves and parents that are probably 25 yrs old.
Tried to roast a 6 lb hen tonight and it was as tough as could be. Will put it in the pressure cooker tomorrow to try to get some of the meal. Won't buy any more hens! LOL

Machka - Just say no. No explanation, that is perfect.
I would have woken the neighbourhood with my scream after seeing the cockroach.
Barbara - I really need a big sign somewhere that says, “Open heart and mind Before mouth.”
I’m struggling with being quiet and letting DH go at his own pace.
Kylia - I was making cards for a few years and I had given up on them. I’m thinking about doing them again though.
I love the story of your snowman, I hope he didn’t suffer much trauma.
Margaret - it’s a shame people don’t understand that we want time with them and not stuff.
Heather - I can’t watch nature like that. I’m not sure why, I grew up in the country.
I hope you had a wonderful afternoon with the girls. Edie sure has a beautiful heart.
Pip - I think it’s awesome that Kirby is taking Santa with you camping.
I am definitely in the Griswold category. DH has a black Santa hat that says Bah Humbug. He’s not as bad as he pretends to be though.
Rita - interesting about Loving detachment.
Allie - that is one of my daughter’s favourite teas. I haven’t looked for it here this year yet. I assume it’s not going to be available. I like plain old Tetley when I have a tea.
Will your credit card company step in if it isn’t resolved for the phone?
Barbara - I really hope the oven part comes for you.
Tina - so very sorry for your loss.
Rosemarie - decluttering seems like a never ending task for me im glad you are getting some help.
Carol - I have some of my great grandparents pictures.
Funnily enough, I couldn’t find my marriage license when I needed it this summer. I’ve since ordered a copy. On Friday my SIL sent me a message looking for a particular picture of my FIL and my girls, I opened up a box that I knew was older pictures and on the top was my great grandparents marriage license. 😂
I made another 17 personalities today. I made them in 5.5 hours start to finish. I’m getting a system down.
I’ve decided that the show on Saturday will be the last one for this year. Rodger doesn’t feel up to burning and I don’t want to nag him. It may make for a lean Christmas but that’s ok.
Kaitlyn and Michaela are coming on Friday and we are going to deck the halls! I’m looking forward to this so much!
I bought four little pieces of ceramics to add to my village. This is the part they love the most. They work on it and the tree and I work on other things.
Rodger hasn’t gotten my wall mudded and taped from when we moved and installed the new door, I am quite upset about this because it will ruin my Christmas vibe having an unfinished wall. Kaitlyn suggested we use wrapping paper on the wall. I don’t know if I will do that or not, I am playing with it in my mind though.
I didn’t sleep at all from 4am until probably 7am this morning. Of course, I was sleeping nicely when the alarm went off at 8.
I’m going to head to bed early tonight.
Annie - I am thinking of you and your parents.

My most peaceful morning hours are right now, when I wake up at 5 and Corey doesn't get up until 6 or 7. He rolled himself up like a burrito and took all the covers and that's what woke me up, but I usually wake up at this time anyway.
The top couple of pounds that jumped on my bohonking backside on Thanksgiving morning have receded, which I appreciate. The other two that hitched a ride with them since Monday will hopefully be departing today or tomorrow. Four pounds for me these days is noticeable... when I weighed 300, it was hard to notice that kind of change, but at 150, it really makes you feel like ca-ca.
No real plans for today... tomorrow, they're delivering the windows for the sunroom and Corey will be working on getting those put in. Hopefully, I can help him a bit with those. The guy should also be here tomorrow to give him a bid for shingling the roof. It was supposed to rain last night, but should be dry this week until Thursday. This is NOT a big job for experienced men, seriously only a few hours with a couple guys up there, so I'm really hoping this can be done this week. We'll see.
Yesterday, he was apologizing to me because he went in and cooked breakfast and got my newly cleaned kitchen a little dirty. I had to try to help him understand that it really doesn't annoy me when I clean the stovetop and then he goes in and cooks bacon or sausage and gets it schmutzy again. It's like laundry. It's just never done. You're not going to go around ripping clothes off people to get them clean, or taking the sheets off the bed while they're in it. Laundry is never, ever done. Neither is any other kind of cleaning, not really. Getting cranky about someone getting things dirty again is just silly. Cleaning is my part of our partnership these days. He goes and works hard, and I spend a small amount of my time cleaning, and the rest of the time I do whatever else I want to, which is a huge gift! Cleaning is a very small price to pay to be able to have that kind of freedom. Plus, he's the kind of person who cleans up after himself anyway. Not the stovetop, admittedly, but he gets dinner dishes in the dishwasher nearly every night. And that's after he cooks dinner. Who doesn't love that?
Ah, Egg has extricated herself from the space between me and the laptop table and is lying on my mousepad instead. And purring. Time for a book and more coffee.
Love y'all,

Rebecca, my funny friend... I will admit a possibly unfortunate tendency to make up a word when I can't think of one that fits. "Bohonking," is much like "badonkadonk," but quite a bit... well, flabbier.
Flea - Thanks for the second link, it's an absolutely beautiful home... and if it was near me, I'd be really interested. Just not willing to be in back in the PNW--my arthritis hurt so much ten years ago that I could barely make it through the winters. There was no pain relief that worked up there for me. Best luck for a bidding war and a quick sale - interest rates are dropping once more, so fingers crossed. It was good to see your post. The Christmas holidays will be here before you know it...

I was reading something yesterday about ‘loving detachment’ as a way to deal with the narcissist DH that comes with alcohol. I convinced my self to try that after some research on it. I felt so much better! Helped me to let go of his depression and enjoy the day. Felt so much better, so going to try to continue this. Here is a little info about ‘loving detachment’”
“ When you detach from someone with love, you don't allow their problems to affect you emotionally. You allow them to experience the consequences of their choices without intervening, or feeling like you must “protect” them. Detaching with love helps you become more grounded, and secure in your own thoughts and emotions.”
It is tough but works. There is a lot more about this if you Google ‘loving detachment’. Interesting stuff!
RVRita
That's what I do with my entire family, often including my husband ... although I am a little less detached with him.
My family is not my responsibility. I have my own life and responsibilities ... I don't need to take them all on as well.
After all, if this were 120 years ago, I would be over here in Australia and I probably wouldn't be in contact with any of my family again. Just because I live in a time when I can be in contact with them, doesn't mean I am responsible for them.
Most of my closer family are adults who have their own experiences, personalities etc. and who are able to make their own decisions.
I might not make the same decisions as they have, but that's OK. They probably wouldn't have made many of the decisions I have made. And it isn't a matter of right and wrong, it's a matter of being free to choose the way we all prefer to live.
For example, I prefer to lean toward being vegetarian while much of my family are carnivores. And one suffers gout because he loves his meat. I have said something once or twice years ago, but his choices are not my responsibility.

Rita - I try to live my life with 'loving detachment'. I don't always succeed because I am an empath. Most spiritual principles require practice and discipline, and they get easier with practice. I am still practicing.

I'm more of an "apath"
Although I feel more empathy toward animals than people.
But you took me by surprise. From your posts, I would have put you slightly closer to the apath end of the "empath---apath" scale than to the empath end. Of course, I don't know you in person.

Flea – your mother’s house is absolutely gorgeous. No, Denise never even acknowledged the invitation, not that she can’t come or anything. Maybe not responding means she didn’t have to make up an excuse?
Michele NC
Next time you talk to her, tell her it is OK to just say No.
There's no need to provide any sort of excuse if you don't want to do something.
Just simply No. Or "No thanks."

I wasn't particularly worried about the cockroach. I know they exist in Tasmania and we see them now and then ... not an infestation, just the occasional one here and there. We'll see them outside once in a while. Inside, they can occasionally be found downstairs or in the bathroom, where the one was found. A couple times we've seen one in the entry way.
The thing is, we leave doors and windows open fairly frequently, and treat the garden like an additional room ... so it's no wonder various things wander in from time to time.Lisa eloquent as always and oh so true! As for Machka's cockroach I am with Machka. One lesson I learned in the Philippines was to turn on lights before entering a dark room, especially the bathroom. Between roaches, rice beetles, spiders, and geckos, you wanted to know where you were stepping. They didn't make much appearance out of bathrooms thank goodness.
TTYL,
Kylia in cold Ohio
We get various spiders, cockroaches, scorpions, various insects, and small lizards wandering into the house.
Rhody captures moths, but doesn't really like to eat them, so he gives them to me. He leaves them by my laptop.
We pop the lizards and some of the others back outside.
Scorpions and wasps don't usually make it.
But yes, we've got motion lights in the hallway and toilet room so that we can see what might be in the way of walking.
We'll sometimes bring motion lights with us when we travel so we can use them where we stay too.

Lanette, Oops, I even weighed this morning. The lowest I was all week, coming in at 127.6. Yay! Was stuck at 139.8 all week so I will say water weight. Water, water, water...ugh.
Tina I am sending you hugs. So sorry for your loss.
Annie Still hugging you!
Tracey Mr Snowman is still in recovery. It was dark when I got home. I am hoping he will be okay and ready to go back to work this weekend-lol! I love the Christmas wrap idea! Make it like a giant present.
Carol Computer issues suck! Good to see your smiling face.
My bit of country life was a coyote in the backyard. I was watching with binoculars when I realized it was eating. He stood there for over 5 minutes even when DH went out on porch. Strange behavior as they are usually quite skittish and drag they prey back undercover. Remember 2 acres in backyard. Drove truck down to investigate. It was gone, but bunny fur remained. Just an odd thing that I don't often see.
Well, yesterday's hunt was safe, but no meat brought in. DH said he sat and watched 2 eating for about 15 minutes around 5 pm. He chose not to take shot as it would have been the only one taken and late in day. Two guys missed their shots. Today is a new day. We don't believe in trophy hunting. Venison is our main red meat.
I got three hours of online training done yesterday. Sold a lawnmower, snow blower, and trimmer. Was a busy couple of hours in late day. Hoping for another productive day.
Hair appointment tonight. SIL won't be at worked. I told her to stay home as I don't want whatever she has! So just Roger and I.
Off to get some more cards done. I got my first one in the mail yesterday! I do have to get my decorating inside done before Sunday evening. We are hosting the dessert gathering. I reckon my theme is cozy Christmas. One friend decorates early American style. Antiques, old fashioned ornaments, candles. The other's style is country chic. She uses lots of white and metals. I once lamented that my house has no style. My sister said my style is cozy and welcome. Love her!
Hugs held extra tight!
Much love,
Kylia in Cold 🥶 Ohio thankful for alpaca socks and long johns! Oh and remote start vehicles.4 -
Definitely playing with water weight! Scale says 131 this morning. I am sure last night's massage didn't help scale, but water needed.2

Tina-so sad to hear of your friend. Going to the game in his memory is a great idea.
I live in a definite suburb but surrounded by some farmland. I have seen the occasionally coyote slinking across my front yard early in the morning (I think going from one corn field to the other). We have quite a few of them in our county. I prefer to keep bugs of all sorts out of my house!
Working from home today. Did get call from podiatrist office yesterday-they were asking if I would like a ct of left foot/leg to see if something else is going on since pain is increasing. What a great idea! (I am being sarcastic). Got it scheduled for today. Will hold off on the calls I also got from pt and an alternative treatment podiatrist has discussed until I get ct results. I don't mind pt or trying other treatments, but I would like to be certain of what the problem actually is.
Take care all,

I do enjoy working with SQL and am glad I could take this course. I have worked with SQL for years, and have taken courses in it, but I'm yet to feel anything like proficient ... one day, maybe. Good morning ladies!
Up super early again. It seems I've gotten into a cycle - 6 hours one night, 7 1/2 hours the next night, rinse and repeat.
Debbie - I just remembered a similar case to your MIL where a GI married a Filipino gal and brought her to the US to live, she was also a "snag" with a similar mean and controlling personality. She drove both of her kids away. The son married the daughter of a friend of mine, and her 2 kids made it a point to move far away. As far as I know, the snag's husband is still alive. Next time I see my friend I'll get an update.
Tina - so sorry to hear about your friend. Hope they caught the driver and that person is brought to justice.
Ginny - hope they can find what's bugging your foot.
Barbara - how's that leg/foot/shinsplint coming along? I wore different shoes yesterday and woke up with an aching shin! It doesn't take much. Now that I've been walking around the house in my old shoes a little it seems OK. Also, yesterday I walking on the road a little = pavement. "House walking" is easier on my feet and legs since much of it is on a softer surface. Hope that oven part comes in.
What the heck is it with customer service and deliveries these days? Barbara's oven igniter. Joy's TV dish. Debbie's phone. Allie's missing phone. Good gravy.
Kylia - good job on the sales floor yesterday and keeping your weight steady.
Machka - does all honey crystallize? I have some I bought years ago, theoretically from bee keepers within my area, that is still very liquid. And I have a couple quarts of local honey I bought just last year that are crystallizing! I'm starting to wonder if the liquidy stuff was adulterated with corn syrup. It doesn't have an intense honey flavor either.
Beth and KJ - are you getting lake effect snow right now? It's 25 here. Gradual warming starting tomorrow and rain due by Thursday. Daytime temps won't be too warm until the weekend but at least no more freezing nights. Every morning just before daybreak I've been taking hot water out for the hens. By the time they get to it, their water bowl has cooled off some but still. They seem to be surviving.
Chicken stuff - Yesterday I was busy soldiering up the roof over the chicken run. When Roger helped me put it together this summer, he used a 1 x 2 center beam and we arched wire fencing over it, then placed a tarp for sun/rain shade. If we get snow or an ice storm that puts much weight on that tarp, that 1 x 2 probably won't old the weight. So I put a center beam in. It's only a 1 x 2 as well, but it's something. I found a 2 x 2 in DH's wood stash that I'm drying out and will have ready. It's weathered but seems pretty sound. Just when I said the egg production is falling off, Gladys and Thelma are back at it again. Maybe it's that warm water they get in the morning. See above.
More thoughts on our aging brains .... I think being around younger people helps us immensely. It seems you moms and grandmothers who are able to interact often with younger family members and friends may keep your brains from aging. I feel lucky that my best friend is in her early 50's and we message or text each other several times a day about all kinds of things and I generally see her once or more a week. In fact, people my own age seem older than me most of the time. I guess that's why going to a senior center or similar place where "old folks" hang out doesn't interest me right now.
Regarding hawks taking out little birds - I sometimes see the hawks doing their business here - not very much since I haven't remembered to fill the bird feeder. When we lived on the farm, neighbors would lose little dogs like Yorkies to eagles and larger birds of prey. We never lost a lamb to birds. Some did come up missing after our guard dog died, either from coyotes who were brave enough to come into the barn or perhaps a large cat - something that could drag a lamb over the fence.
Was going to go shopping this morning but think I'll stick close to home. Want to make beef & barley soup, and try my hand at making hummus. I found an old jar of tahini in the fridge, if it's not good anymore, peanut butter works well too. I'm going to take the time to remove as many "hulls" from the chickpeas as I can.
That's the latest. Need to poke the fire in the woodstove, doesn't want to get going this morning for some reason.
Make it a super day!
Lanette
SW WA State6 -
Good morning ladies!
Thank you all again for your hugs and best wishes. My sister is here for the week, so that helps. My morbid thoughts don't seem so out of line when I can talk to her.
Mom had a bedside biopsy last night. They went in through her mouth under a local, so not invasive at all, thank goodness. The ENT surgeon called it a malignancy, although we won't be sure until the results are back from pathology.
He said that surgery treatment would remove part of her palate and mess up her cheek and mouth, and require reconstruction. She really isn't a candidate for that at 91, with kidney and heart issues. So maybe some radiation.
I'm thinking palliative care, and so is my sister. My dad has been quiet during these conversations. I don't know if he can't hear it or doesn't want to face it. I guess I need to have a palliative care consult. And it's probably time to call hospice.
The other issue is whether she comes home. I don't know if we can care for her here. Even keeping her hydrated is a challenge. But she wants to come home.
So that's my world this morning. Or it will be, after another cup of tea. Thank you all for listening to me as I clarify my thoughts.
