WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR NOVEMBER 2023

Hey all! I have finally caught up! again. lol On Halloween morning, the weather forecast was for a "wintry mix" and possible up to 12 inches of snow/ice accumulation. I laughed at that. First snow flurries NEVER accumulated. The ground is still warm. Not so this year! West Michigan got a big (and early) dose of winter. The snow flurries started at about 9am. My little ones were all in costume and hyped up about Halloween. We were busy doing Halloween activities, so what was going on outside wasn't really noticed. By 1pm the grass was just barely covered with snow; but the snow still came down. I closed the curtains so the kids could nap. A couple of hours later, when naptime was over, I opened the curtains and the three year old looked at her little brother and said, "Arbor! We went to sleep on Halloween and woke up and it's CHRISTMAS!" In that two hours we got a good four inches of snow. We also lost power. So...by days end we had 7 inches of wet, heavy, snow in the yard. Power was out until about 4pm the following day; so no childcare. I was able to do some cooking (gas stove/oven) and cleaning and stayed warm with a few layers on (thank you menopause). I got my first winter workout in (one hour shoveling) and have been feeling THAT for the past couple of days! I am also still recovering from that weird cold with a cough that just seems to hang in there forEVER! The worst part about the cough is the teeny peeing that happens sometimes. Ugh! The laundry. On the flip side to that issue; three of my childcare families/parents are physical therapists and gave me some great pelvic wall exercises to do.
NSV: It has been 60 days of no daily alcoholic drink! Note, I am NOT abstaining completely. I am just getting off the daily drinking bus. I did have one beer when I went to the movies with my son and had one glass of wine after I made pot roast (which takes 1 1/2 cups of wine) and onion soup (which took a cup of wine). That left about 5 ounces so I had a glass with my soup. I am pretty proud of 2 drinks in 2 months.
Heather - Hope you are feeling better. The cycle mud race looked like it was enjoyed by everyone! Mud makes everything more fun!
Rori- Good to hear from you! Glad you are still in contact with your special friend. Steward Copeland! Eeeek! My teen heart just went "thump-thump!"
Rebecca- Your trip went splendidly! I am glad you got that time with your grands and other family. special for sure!
Allie Miles is adorable as always! Looks like his baptism tuckered him out. I am sure you will make the best choice for you when it comes to your car.
Cars DH and I had such horrible luck with used cars. We definitely could not afford new; but all of the used ones we got turned out to be horrible with hidden issues. We began to lease cars back in the early 2000's. Mini vans and later Jeep Grand Cherokees. It really didn't cost us much more than owning our own car. As long as we kept up a regular maintenance program for the car, the other repairs were paid by the auto leasing company. Then, after two years of leasing, we had the option to continue leasing what we had or to trade it in for something new. When my DH lost his job about six years ago, we went down to one car and decided to buy out the lease on that one car. It is now paid off, we know it's complete history, have taken care of it and are having no troubles (other than running into the odd deer or turkey). We will drive it until it dies. A 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Because we both work at home, we only put about 25-50 miles on it each week (sometimes less). One tank of gas lasts us for quite a while. My DYS has a 1995 Jeep Wrangler. It is beat to hell; but he loves that thing. We live in a beach community, so in the summer, he thinks he is the *kitten*! lol
Monitors- Either baby monitors or a ring doorbell system or something of the like. My daughter has the Ring doorbell system. It alerts her and her hubby by phone (notifications) when someone is at their door or near the home. They also have cameras set up in the living room and kitchen. They are set to detect sound/rather than motion (but motion is an option). They can access those cameras at any time by their phone. I imagine you could put the cameras in bedrooms as well. My aunt had a system in her home; set to detect movement in and out of rooms. If presence was detected in one room for longer than a set amount of time; a notification was sent and cameras would be accessed. This allowed her, her privacy; but if it was the middle of the night and she was in her kitchen for a long time, or had gone outside and not gone back in, help was notified and on the way if needed.
More of you I wanted to reply to, but I need to scoot. I am working, but just have infants today and they are waking up from their morning naps. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)
Yet, it did my heart good. Feeling happy to be home though. My own bed, a tidy home. Its the little things. I don't know when they will ever be able to visit us. Husband grumbled on the long drive back to Whidbey island that he's kinda done doing all the traveling to them, its their turn. The thing is that with son's college, and her job, its hard. I get it, but of course I am not the one doing all the driving. They are traveling the 8 hrs down to see her family in November. My brain goes to the fact that we're only 5+ hours from them. There's the fact that my husband won't allow their dogs, and her family will. That's a biggie. They know that we always stay at a hotel, and that's something we have to plan for financially. We are the in-laws and we hold a certain place in the family structure. If DIL has vacation time 99% of the time its to her family, or friends. I get it. I try not to be offended because that's just how life is. But I do sometimes.

Rita, Someone told me about using "not available" as the response when asked to do something I didn't want to do. I just say, "I'm sorry (or I'd love to) but I'm not available" It doesn't matter if I'm "not available" because I have another appointment or just because I plan to sit on the couch, it means the same thing. I don't have to convince someone that my reason is a good one in their estimation. I remember a time when a friend told me at great length about she couldn't go with me to something because she was going to her granddaughter's swimming class. Her explanation annoyed me because grandchildren aren't a high priority with me so I didn't understand why it was so important.
Rosemarie, What you said about the price of goat's milk on Amazon versus Wal-Mart reminded me of how my mother used to shop all over town and said "You have to be a walking price list" to get the bargains.
Kim, my doctor told me that I was the poster girl for doing the right thing for good bone density (walking, dancing, lifting heavy weights, eating a healthy diet including Calcium and Vitamin D and still I ended up with low bone density and a spinal fracture. There are differing opinions about swimming as a weight bearing exercise but I agree with others that the best exercise is the one you'll stick to. I tried swimming and water aerobics and gave them up because I didn't like to drive to the pool, didn't like to have to change clothes before and after, and found swimming very boring.
Lisa, Many years ago when I was working, I often woke up much too early and one morning, I thought to myself, "There must be a good reason I'm up this early. There must be something useful I can do with the time" and since then, I have done better with an early wake up. My current frustration with waking up early is the scheduled walk with my dog walking friend. I'd be glad to go earlier or later depending on when I woke up, but she sets an alarm to meet us at a prearranged time.
This thread is a great place to prattle on with all the details about something, knowing that some will read and enjoy and others will ignore, but no one will shush you and tell you to hurry up and get to the point.

It is the best site.💖. When I tell things to my husband he sometimes says, "yes you have already told me this, go on".... Or he does this motion with his hands to wrap it up! Like what a director does to start filming! It us so annoying, I just stop talking and say, " nope I am done".

Stat for the day-
Walk w/family- 2hrs 6min, 37elev, 82ahr, 103mhr, 3.02ap, 6.42mi= 587c
Strava app= 787c
We confirmed the run has a gear check so I won’t be needing to run carrying our bike shoes, so that’s a plus. When we went to go pick up our packets I found that I accidentally registered us for a 10k instead of the 1/2. They were able to change our bibs and he didn’t charge us the difference. Another plus! I’ll still be slow. Recommended training time is 12-16 weeks and I’ve only trained maybe 4 weeks and that’s a maybe! We will see how I do.9 -

Allie-I have found something like this style very helpful for me in opening jars https://a.co/d/1h9I80h
Pip-I think t is awesome you are doing the marathon. That puts you ahead of the majority of the American public! That's a huge win right there.
Got lots cleaned up today before Stanley Steemer showed up to clean ducts. Process took them the better part of three hours. They shared before and after pictures-nasty stuff but I don't think they have ever been cleaned out (I know we never have in the 30 years we have had the house. The crew was very polite, followed appropriate lock out safety features, explained everything to me thoroughly and cleaned everything up.
Got a nice walk in after they left. Talked to SIL while walking. She is calming down a bit more. It has been determined her housemate needs longterm care so SIL will not be taking her back in home. It would really not be safe for either one of the. Housemate is incapable of any type of real self care anymore. SIL can not physically provide assistance needed (bath, changing depends, etc.). Housemate has also become very verbally abusive to SIL. I do have SIL going to see her doctor for a statement confirming she is physically incapable of providing care for another who needs nursing care.
I am not looking forward to the time change. I am hoping I don't wake up at 3 am, but will cross that bridge when I come to it.
Take care all,

Another article on swimming and bones ...
https://www.healthline.com/health/osteoporosis/swimming-for-osteoporosis
And another ...
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3737199/
Swimming is great exercise and probably doesn't have a negative effect on bones, but it isn't one of the better choices for bone building.
Thing is ... different exercises have different benefits.
Yoga's not particularly good for burning calories, building muscle or improving the cardiovascular system ... but one aspect of fitness is flexibility and yoga helps with that.
Cycling is great for the cardiovascular system and can help to build some of the leg muscles, but it doesn't do much for the upper body or flexibility or bones.
So it's good to do a variety of things.

Hi Gals,
Thanks for the input.
Pip – you’ll do great – maybe not as well as you are used to but you are in overall such good shape that you are starting ahead of most folks when they start training. Glad they have lockers and were able to adjust your registration.

Kylia - When I worked at the home, you could call the Rec department and they would give you first names of residents that needed some extra love for cards and such.
Some homes have “adopt a senior” where you can send cards and treats throughout the year. Some families never visit their loved ones and some have no family left.
Lisa - My DH sleeps like you. It’s even worse right now as he’s working nights Sunday to Thursday.
Rosemarie - you’re taking such great care of the puppies. I have found you you to compare prices on anything these days. I wish prices would go down.
Beth - I saw a very simple design that I bet you would love. The other day. She printed sheet music of O Holy Night, used Mod Podge to put it on a board after staining it with tea to look aged. She had a cutting machine, but you could use sticker letters and she just put in big letters over it with the song title. Added a little sprig of pine from a pick and it looked beautiful.
Also, if you go to local craft markets, you may be able to find a crafter to make for you that costs less than commercial places. I don’t have Hobby Lobby here so I’m not sure of their prices.
Kelly - I hoping to get some of that wonder back in my life too when I start working with children.
My youngest daughter has never lost it, if I had my life to live over I would try to be more like her.
Barbie - I have a friend that used to look at the flyers each week and meal plan around what was on sale. She would then plan her grocery day trip based on where the sales were. I used to go with her a lot and saved a lot of money.
Rebecca - I am a DIL that always made sure to visit my in laws when I went home whether I was alone or with DH. I can see the dogs being a problem for them though.
Pip - good luck!
Ginny - it’s good your SIL has that burden off her plate.
I have the bases painted for 9 snowmen and one more house set, and have one house set completed today. I had so many ideas swirling in my head I had to write some down. I need a nice day this week to spend some time in the shop cutting some more wood. I’ll get this batch done before I start another batch though.
Excuse the mess, this was just a snapshot for my daughter. I need to do something to the base yet.
DH did not get the mudding done this weekend, he now says he’ll do it Friday. We shall see. I want it done before I decorate for Christmas because I have to paint the wall too.
He tries to switch to days on his “days off” from his night shift and ends up sleeping most of the time off.
I guess I should head to bed.

Tracey - Love the little houses. Meant to say something when I saw them without the paint that I was looking forward to seeing them, and you've done a terrific job. What a neat idea.
Just watched the time jump back, which is very Groundhog Day - ish, and am now reliving the 1a.m. to 2a.m. hour all over again. Woke up wide awake just after midnight, tried to go back to sleep but no joy. My sinuses are packed up and painful on the left, hope it's just allergies. Took a decongestant, which won't help the sleeping situation but should help the sinus. Fingers crossed I didn't pick up a bug while at the doctor's office Friday. The honey vanilla chamomile tea tastes soooo good right this second, and the heat of the tea is wonderfully soothing.
Egg just kneaded every part of me she could reach in revenge for me not opening her kitty door and letting her outside. No matter how many times I tell her there are boogers outside at this time of night, she doesn't believe me. Now that she's softened me up, she's curled up on my lap until she gets tired of me tippy-tapping on the keys.
Saturday ended up quite a productive day, in the end- Friday, Corey called me to let me know that one of the stores in town had a good sale, and we spent yesterday morning cutting up roasts and vacuum bagging about 40 main dish items for the two of us, beef for him and shrimp or beef for me. Two weeks ago it was chicken, so we are truly stocked up for months if not a full year to come. With prices continuing to spiral upward, it makes sense to grab the more expensive things when the sales are on.
While he built the next eight feet of deck in the afternoon, I finally got the cushion created for the cedar chest - I've still got to get a few more areas tied, and it will be usable and not too poofy. Hopefully. Ten more feet to go, and Corey's completed the 24 x 10 ft floor. Then we have to order the lumber for the roof and walls and get them delivered. He's taking Mondays off pretty much for the rest of the year, as he has eight days of vacation to use or lose. That will help him work on the sunroom each weekend and still be able to have a complete rest day before he goes back to work.
Egg and I have settled back in after a trip to the kitchen get one more cup of tea for me, and for her to complain once more that she really wants to go outside. She's purring, I'm yawning, the decongestant is working and I can breathe again. The second trip through the hour of 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. may yet end in my getting back to sleep. Happy Sunday.
Love from very Darkansas...

Today’s Gratitude: That I retired when I did
Got a lovely surprise call from a former coworker, asked if he could FaceTime. Said yes even though I was still in my flannel nightgown. He and two other guys I worked with were on an annual Vegas get-together. It was so very good to see their smiling faces and hear that they and their kids are all doing ok. By the end of the chat I was sooo glad I got out when I did
Whine:Internet went down so no choice but to do PTBarbie ((hugs)) Love “…no one will shush you and tell you to hurry up and get to the point.”
PT done, breakfast eaten, still no internet.

Day more than half gone, only 2K steps, no internet means no YouTube Leslie Sansome. Dug out old Zumba DVD and walked to 5 songs Zumba to get to 4500 steps. Can NOT move my hips butt the way they do but walking at their pace gets HR up and sweating. Still no internet.
One game of Spider, one of Free Cell, still no internet. Repeat, still no internet.
Prep dressing for hot potato salad, tummy time, green salad prep.
Aha! Internet restored! Yay! Ate dinner, napped, Jeopardy and Zumba walked some more and now I’m back on line.

Kelly so sorry your debit card got hacked. “…As an adult, I react to things (joyfully) the way a child might. I clap, and jump, and spin, and get very excited…” this!
Lanette while you were making minestrone I made a big ol’ batch of pasta e fagioli, my new comfort food. Ate one portion and froze the rest We treat the dvd player clock like the clock radio in that “how to set your clocks back” meme.

Allie I really don’t like the bottles with the push down and twist tops, and transfer their contents whenever I can.

Carol-the only time Siri gets involved with my texts is if I receive one while driving and I can respond hands free. I have Siri turned off for automatically send messages in setting (in Siri and search). That's only setting I can find.
Allie-I hate those child proof types lids. I understand the reason for them but it doesn't help us! So glad you are happy with decision regarding vehicle. That's what counts-your peace of mind.
Lisa-work on addition seems to be going well. Good way for Corey to use up some of the vacation time. Your morning commentary and humor were something I can share today!
Tracey-I like the houses.
Barbara AHMOD-isn't incredible how dependent we have become on internet? If the electronics are messed up it seems we are at loose ends. Friday I had to give staff the afternoon off because the state computer system went down and they couldn't get to case files to do anything!
Annie-good for you getting back on bike! That's what is important-even when we get off track-we get back on.
Slept so-so last night-woke up several times in anticipating of time change-did make myself stay in bed until the new 5:15 am. Need to get stretches and walk in this morning. Going to YS and DIL house for lunch and watch some football for my birthday. Hard to believe I am 69 today. Since the only medication I take (besides vitamins) is for the thyroid, I think I am in pretty good shape.
Take care all,

Good morning or whatever time it is at your house, ladies.
Ginny - Why does your SIL need proof she is unable to care for/deal with her housemate any longer? (Why a doctor's note?) I'm sure you have mentioned that relationship in the past but I don't recall it. Does she feel responsible for this person and the doctor's note will help justify, for her, that she's unable to do it anymore?
Barbie - you probably recall how frustrating it was for me having to postpone my morning walks until my neighbor got up, to meet her schedule. So I finally put her on notice that we were cutting down to no more than twice a week and on other days I was going back to walking by myself. Having to do summertime chores in the morning helped since I wanted to get jobs done before it got hot out. It shouldn't have been a big deal but a couple times she pulled the "what have I done that you don't want to walk with me anymore?" guilt trip. I was done buying into it. I would complain about it to DH when he was alive and he'd say "that's why I don't get involved with other people anymore" and I can see his point. Thankfully she's OK with that arrangement now, and I'm grateful our friendship is still strong.
Rebecca - my DH used to do the same thing with his hands like "wrap it up!" LOL! I think he had a timer in his head that after a minute or two, he was done listening. So I'd talk faster. A benefit of his short term memory loss toward the end of his life was that I could tell him the same story several times a day and it was always new to him.
I was surprised when I went to Walmart last week - the self checkouts were closed. I just read that theft is forcing them to go back to the checkers-at-registers in many stores, and I'm not surprised. Crossing fingers they have at least one "10 items or less" type register open. I'm sure it will take some adjustment.
Need to get a few things done around here then head to town for my "Walmart Experience."
**Reminder to get weekly Check-in info to me by tomorrow morning.**
Have a fabulous day!

Ginny: I didn't know Stanley Steamer would clean ducts...the ventilation ducts..mine have never been cleaned. I did have the dry duct cleaned about 5 years ago. They said to clean the dryer duct once a year and I just smiled and didn't say anything.
PIP: Good luck with the race!
MargaretTurk: This is my first time hearing about Chuck and Don's. DrewB must love her diet.
Grandmallie: Goodluck with the car!
Lanette: I hope the weather is okay. I have not done coloring but did some calligraphy about 5 years ago. I liked practicing the Chinese letters. I sent the guide to putting the clocks back to my mother and son. They both loved it!
kJKelly: My pool put in a reservation system and this did me in. The pool was never available when I wanted to go.
RVRita: So good you have neighbors that will help.
Beth: So much work going on at your home! You and your husband have much energy!
Rebecca: My son has only been married 1.5 years. I am just beginning to understand and experience whaat it means to have a married son! I know that the fact that the dogs are allowed at your daughter in laws house is a biggie.
Lisa: Goodluck finishing the sunroom deck.
Barbie: My sympathy to you about Sasha and Bernie. I remember the passing of my poodle, Sport like it was yesterday.
Barbara: Glad the dog witter will work out!
Machka: I love Jolabokaflod! I hope I spelled that right!
Tracey: I love the wood working. it must be hard for your friend to say good bye to her belongings. I know I have become more attached to mine than I ever thought I would be.
I have been up since the new 5:30 am. The dogs wanted to be fed. Now of course they are back asleep and I am wide awake. I have had 5 hours of true sleep. They will be awake and I will be dozing later!
I am listening to the violinist Hilary Hahn on Amazon Music. My husband wanted to see her when she came to Atlanta. I don't even know how he knew she was coming. But we went and I remember the concert very well. I also read a book Elizabeth the Great and my husband and I went to Athens GA to see a combined concert from that period and display of her artifacts....the gems that were in her artifacts were interesting to see! I have reduced the dog's milk to 1 ounce at each meal. I will give the small pup who might only weigh 3.5 pounds extra milk by herself!
Best,
Rosemarie from GA

Will try and get a few more things done today. Signed the title over to Diane. And cleaned the car out..will probably take to the car wash and vacuum it out.

Rebecca - when our parents were all still alive, we went home for Christmas each year. We spent an equal number of nights at my Moms and my Dads houses. We spent a few hours at hubs parents. Why? His parents didn’t let us bring our dog. We would drive 2 hours past his parents and leave our dog at either Moms house or Dads house and backtrack to his folks house to visit.
