DECEMBER 2023 Monthly Running Challenge

Today I got 8 stride repeats after warmup. They are small burst of faster steps followed by a normal running period, here 20/45 seconds. I love those, and I'm totally happy I managed to get through despite not being so fit at the moment.
That's good. My plan asked me to do four thirty second sets at 200 Steps Per Minute. I thought that was too much, but after I did the drill I saw I was actually going slightly faster than that. It's good to know.5 -
@quilteryoyo Great job with the race. I also enjoyed very much your race report.
I ran at the field house this morning. It is at the local college and they are on winter break. So the hours are pretty wonky—especially Christmas week. So the running will be either outside or at the Y. I usually enjoy running in the snow. It is just getting out the door to do it.

It was pretty cold this morning at 38°F feels like 31°F. I wore long pants and a long-sleeved shirt with extra sleeves. I was pretty comfortable. I ran 6 miles. I normally take a rest day, or at least run a shorter run after my long run, but we're expecting rain later in the week, so I figured I'd better get out there. There isn't much to report about the run, but the moon sure was pretty.
I had to zoom in so you could see the moon better, but in person it was awesome.
@daria0919 That snow is pretty.

7 miles this evening. NIce weather in low 60s. Thought I would do an easy run, so took out some old retired shoes to see how they would feel. I could tell I was working harder than I should be, but overall it felt fairly easy about half the time.

@tarun_yadavA Sounds like you are doing your part in being the caretaker. I'm sure your mom wouldn't want you to do to "lady" stuff anymore than you want to do it.
Thanks @Scott6255 , and @kgirlhart .
@daria0919 I'm glad you got a surprise snow. Your dog looks like a shadow, or a ghost. Great job getting your workout in later. Yeah, you just don't look and hope you don't step on too many.
Thanks @Teresa502 . We did have a good time - didn't get to spend a lot of time on the beach, but did get to see some of the family, which is always nice. I didn't get to see the newest step-great grand child because it was only 5 days old and they didn't want him around a lot of people. Hopefully next time. I did manage to see about half of the family that live there, which is pretty good considering they all work.
Sounds like you are doing great @yirara !
Thank you @emptydog ! Nice running.
Nice running @kgirlhart . Love the moon pictures.
Nice running @Scott6255 . Glad the old shoes were okay.

it was a little chilly on the beach this morning. It was 55F (12.8C),17 mph winds, and partly cloudy. Except for the wind, that would have been great weather for the run. Too bad it was two days too late. LOL Anyway, I did go for a mile walk on the beach. You could tell I was a Northerner as I was the only person with shorts and short sleeves. Everyone else had on at least long sleeves and capris...some in coats.
The ocean this morning
The ocean was so much calmer today than yesterday, even though the wind was blowing harder than yesterday. Kind of weird. I'll include yesterday's picture for comparison.
Afterwards, I packed the car and Tippy and I drove to SC. (Well, I drove and she slept. Too bad it couldn't be the other way around. ) Once I got us checked in, we went for a fast walk. I did wear a coat, even though it was only 54F (12.2C). It felt colder. I hadn't really planned on doing a fast mile until we got started and I decided if we were going to walk, it might as well be fast enough to count.

If you are interested, I got the official pictures in an e-mail today. The best ones, and one out take, are under the spoiler.
Official Time was 2:24:04
I wish I always looked like this when I ran.
"Flying" over the finish line.
How I really look when I'm running.
I'm pretty sure I was walking at this point and was telling the photographer I'd run for the picture and no one would know the difference. I guess talking, running, and pictures are NOT a good combination.9 -
December total: 53.5/164 miles
12/1: 6 miles
12/2: 12 miles
12/4: 9 miles
12/5: 2.7 miles
12/7: 5 miles
12/9: 10 miles
12/11: 8.8 miles
The cold front blew in and today was lovely. Even though I had to run after work, I still got nice weather at about 60F and rapidly dropping as the sun went down. I did a tempo run and was very happy with how it went.5 -
Those are great pictures @quilteryoyo! I love that the finish line photo caught both feet in the air.4

@quilteryoyo - thank you for sharing your photos! You’re pretty much smiling in all of them. You must have enjoyed yourself overall and feel proud of your successful run! Congrats again!
That first photo of the dramatic sky is amazing!3 -
Morning everyone!
Got in 5M again (at 09"08).
despite missing a day - going well for target of 165M for month / 1400 for year.
@quilteryoyo - pics look great! well done!
As for looking after mother... not too bad. Just errands around the house, 'fetch me...' ... and a lot of daytime Christmas movies! lol6 -
Yikes, Garmin coach is giving me a 70 minute run for tomorrow! I can run 30 minutes at the moment. Lets see if I at least manage 35 or 40 without walking7

Looking good @quilteryoyo!3

Today was a running fail. I was supposed to meet 4 friends at 5 am for a run. As I was driving to the meet-up, one of the friends texted that she was sick (throwing up, light-headed) and would not be making it. So, the three of us started out and my friend Daphne tripped on the sidewalk and fell before we had completed the first mile. She didn't have any skinned up places but she did something to her hip. I wanted to run back and get a car for her, but she wanted to walk in the hopes that it would loosen up. We ended up with her doing a slow hobble back to the parking area. By this time, we had used up almost all of our running time and I was cold from walking in the 23F weather so I gave up on the run for today.
Loved all the pictures @quilteryoyo!8 -

This is a vivid drama. A three part play in one paragraph. You'll be back for powering through runs in time. It was nice of you to be kind to your friend who injured herself, and nice of you to be kind to yourself in not staying cold.6 -
Hello everyone!
Today I didn’t make it out, but yesterday I ran 14km in the rain and mud. Although I briefly rinsed my shoes yesterday they were still wet and very swamp-smelling this morning. Hopefully they will be dry by tomorrow. I’d like to get a longer run in. I might have to take out some of my retired pairs to run in cleaner shoes.
So far for December I have 32.6/I don’t remember- maybe 160km.6 -
@polskagirl01 My condolences! I am so sorry for your loss.
@quilteryoyo I loved your race report! It seems like despite the organisational glitches you still had a good time in the race and on the trip. Tippy too !
@tarun_yadavA I hope your caregiving is going well. About your picture post… tsk tsk- also completely siding with your wife there.
@AlphaHowls Sorry to hear about the tornado and the damage it caused in your town!

It was another cold 6 mile run this morning. The temperature was about 39°F feels like 34°F. I dressed the same as yesterday and was pretty comfortable. My feet were kind of cold at the beginning and I took off my gloves and sleeves for the last half mile but for the most part I was good.
@teresa502 I hope your friends are ok. Walking in cold weather is so much harder than running.
I hope everything is going ok with your mom @tarun_yadavA .
You can do it @yirara !
@Laurz9191 Stuffing your shoes with newspaper will help them dry faster. I've started saving the tissue that comes with the new shoes and that works really well too.

Got tied up with tech support call late in the day, so didn't have time to go out for a run (one of those that should have taken 2 minutes ended up over an hour)!. So did 5 TM miles between calls.
7 -
Nice running @martaindale !
Me too @kgirlhart ! That is my favorite picture of them all. Thank you.
Thanks @daria0919 . I guess I really did enjoy it. It was just hot and a bit disorganized.
Thanks @tarun_yadavA ! Great running and I'm sure your mom is glad you are there.
That's a big jump in distance @yirara . Do what you can, but don't hurt yourself to please the person behind the watch.
Thanks @Scott6255 . You did great to do what you could on the TM between calls.
Thanks @Teresa502 . I hope Daphne is okay and your other friend feels better. Sorry that you missed your run.
Thanks @Laurz9191 Did you stuff your shoes with newspaper? That usually helps to get them dry. I hope you enjoyed the muddy run.
