Annie, my poodles were very patient in the morning and I could use the toilet, brush my teeth, get on the scale, and put on my clothes before taking them out in the morning. My sweet puppy, Annie, needs to go as soon as she wakes up, so I sleep in my clothes so I can take her out immediately. I had to change my plans to accommodate her. Now I get on the scale later after I take my shower and record that weight. Since I do it the same time every morning (after breakfast, after drinking 3-4 glasses of water, the weight is higher than it would have been when I first got up but the weight each day can be compared to the day before. The actual number isn't as important as the fact that I weigh every day and that it compares to a weight under the same conditions the day before.
April, Eating healthier foods will boost your energy and your sense of well being. I plan my eating to include foods that give me the most nutrition. By logging them in my food journal, I can see where the excess calories come from and change thing accordingly over time. I found that with a limited calorie allowance, sugary treats, beverages, sauces, and dressings used too many calories so I mostly eliminated them in favor or more veggies and protein.
Rosemarie, some people like me love solitude and exercising alone is energizing. Others like you need to be with others and in a special environment like the gym or a class to feel energized. You are wise to see that about yourself and put that knowledge into action. Continuing to take personal inventory is how people are able to accomplish their goals.
I had a good walk this morning starting with a longer than usual walk with the dogs. I don't get many steps when I walk with them but being with them is a joyful time. When I walked alone I listened to three interesting podcasts, two about food and one about good life lessons like "start your day by accomplishing an important task" and "life is not fair".

Yesterday I made tortilla pizzas for the boys. A childhood thing they used to have. Its just a large flour tortilla brushed with olive oil, pricked with a fork so you don't have too many bubbles and put in the oven, turning them so they get firm. I did that part, and put warmed sauce on them, but they filled them with cheese and pepperoni. I made 2 each for them. They were happy. Each night they hug me hard, until we all about fall over. I am grateful that the Navy has allowed me to have these boys (well 25, and 34) for well over a month. I think I will be ok when they both have to go. This time has regulated my emotions a bit.

Happy Saturday all!
I have been reading this week but not a lot else. Very busy. Work is insane.
Have lots to do this weekend-both around house and for work. I slept in (for me), got up, laid back down for another hour. Soaked by foot. Ordered some soaking salts and heated foot bath (water goes cold too quickly). Got a vry basic model (I had one with massager, etc. that I hated). Yesterday they cut me lose from therapy-seems I have hit their maximum improvement wall. Calling Monday to get appointment with orthopedic doctor to assess and see if anything we are missing. Don't think it is just arthritis. Had massage-therapist worked on it (said it is very tight). He recommended soaking also. Also need to schedule appointment with doctor who took over for my internist.
Tracey-I do want to say I can understand your concern about the grade. I can also say as an employer I just look for the degree-grades can be all over the place. What matters is the person has the diligence to work and complete the training, Then we give them the chance to see if they can apply it. Like they say, you call both the person with all Cs in Medical School and the person with all As doctor.
Machka-it does sound like you have been pushing your comfort level. It is good news that Rowan's settlement is nearing completion. Such a lengthy process. I am sure you will both be very relieved. In terms of buying a house-are you planning on staying there longer term? I thought you had mentioned maybe a move back to Canada at some time.
Annie-glad to hear it sounds like things are settling down. Hope aunt continues with healing.
Heather-seems like you and I and Tracey and Lisa and several others are busy being our own medical advocates! We should pool everything we have learned and have a consulting business!
Rita-any luck with your watch?
Need to go check laundry and work down my list. Spent enough time resting and procrastinating!
Take care all,

I'm doing a Lanette! I spent several hours on YouTube researching peripheral artery disease and intermittent claudication. WOW! Such a lot on there! I would bet any amount that I have that. Some really good people to listen to, including a high level vascular surgeon.
The gyst of the treatment, is that I should walk briskly at least 3 days a week until the claudication sets in. At that point I should sit down and rest. Then go again. I should keep going to my limit, whatever that is. The aim is to build new connecting blood vessels around the blockage. Start with the level you can tolerate, keep a record, and build up slowly. You have to walk into the pain.
I went on Amazon and bought a portable folding stool that I can take with me on my walks to sit down. When the pain hits, I can hardly move.
I emailed the doctor today. I want her to take blood pressure readings on my ankle and maybe dopler readings on my thigh.
I can do this. There is lots of experience and support out there! I thought I had some weird, unique, mystery problem. No, it's common. Why couldn't the doctors diagnose it?
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx7 -
Heather Yay! So glad you found some help!
Welcome Debbie in Manitoba!

Tracey, your stand looks perfect in the space now. You certainly have a flare for design. Good job on your studies.
Allie, hope everything works out well for your daughter's pregnancy. So much stress for her to deal with.
Heather, I'm sure you are relieved to finally put a name to your leg issues. Hope treatment goes well going forward.
Machka, loved the fencing pics!
Enjoying a nice sunny day today. Supposed to get fairly warm this coming up week with temps above zero so we may see the bit of snow we have disappear. Been thinking about my trip to Newfoundland in June and looking forward to it. Booked my air tickets yesterday. Had been hoping to get seat sale as I like to fly business or premium economy. Got a good sale going but the return from Newfoundland was full price. They only have 12 seats set aside so decided to book it. It's a 6 hour direct flight from Newfoundland to Edmonton so didn't want to take the chance of being squished in a seat with 2 other people.

Annie, one of the advantages of living in a rural area is that I can just slip a coat on over my pj's and take the dogs outside first thing in the morning.

Great job doing the research.
Good idea giving yourself a chance to rest while walking, keeping records, and having your doc take BP readings on your ankle and doppler readings in other areas. She might have other tests in mind to really check this out more thoroughly too.
Maybe your doc didn't diagnose it because you don't smoke, or have high cholesterol (as I recall) so you were missing the usual health conditions that lead to PAD.
My DH ended up with a complete, or near complete blockage in his femoral artery. But, the ultrasound showed his body had built a detour around it. Apparently it was a smaller vessel and couldn't do the complete job of the main artery, but still it supplied some blood to his leg. They talked about eventually inserting dye into his bloodstream and doing better tracking of where the blood wasn't getting through and putting in stents if I'm remembering right. It's been over 10 years and medical techniques have likely improved.
Yes, he was advised to walk to the pain, and it would eventually get better. He didn't because of his arthritic hips, as I mentioned earlier.
Good luck!

The discussion about the squats challenge got me wondering if there's a way to measure benchmarks to see how our fitness programs are helping and in what areas. Will being able to do more squats improve our sit-to-stand times?
Well, you might know it, Ed Deboo created a video called Six Must-Do Fitness Tests for Seniors. 6 1/2 minutes long.
Here's the PDF to see where you stand. Ladies under 60, it might be worthwhile to take these tests to get a baseline: https://integrativephysicaltherapyservices.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Fitness-Testing-for-Seniors-PDF.pdf
My results so far (I'm 72) -
30 second sit-to-stands: 14 (the range for my age is 10-15)
2 minute step-ups: 99 in ONE minute I would have gone longer but I was getting pooped! Talk about HIIT! Boy I'll say. Maybe I'll slow down a hair and go for 2 minutes next time. (range for my age 68-101 for 2 minutes)
30 second arm/bicep curls with 5# weights: 20 (range for my age 12-17)
Chair sit & reach - plus 2 inches (range for my age less than 1 inch to plus 4 inches)
Suggestion - don't do these tests first thing in the morning. Wait until the afternoon to make sure you're really warmed up.
I will try the others in the video later today. My shoulder problems will probably limit the Back Scratch but it will be fun to see where I stand.
**I wish I would have done these tests 4 months ago, before I started walking fast, 30 to 40 minutes per day, carrying 5# weights and often doing very slow bicep curls at the same time. I bet that's why the good results on the step-ups and bicep curls. I was pleasantly surprised at the sit-to-stands, thought I'd be much worse, but I bet part of that is endurance gained from the walking.
I plan to put myself through these tests once a month. Good way to keep track of progress and also note any adverse health conditions that might be happening which I wouldn't normally notice.
Have fun!

Tracey-I think storage unit looks fine-I don't know anything bigger would work with the door entrance. Plus-I have some items that end up moving to different parts of my house as the mood moves me!
Heather-your research sounds reasonable. I would think the doctors would now, at least, have to explain why it isn't that and give you another diagnosis. I have given up trying to figure out why they can't come up with stuff-maybe too many patients?
Pip-the blinds look great but I must ask-are they your final project of 2024? Or were they the last from 2023?
Lanette-thanks for the video and the quiz. I will try them tomorrow. I know I am pretty good on the back scratch. Want to see how the others go.
Got some things done today, always more to do. Also rested some-think I needed it. Need to go clean up kitchen from dinner and run dish washer.
Take care all,

Tracey - Love the cabinet that way. The drawers weren't in the first pic, which is why I was confused... now that I see them, I understand why stacking them might not work.2

Dh's latest "creation" on his 3D printer. It is Godzilla. I am not a big fan but dh is and he has had a lot of fun printing then painting it(only inside the mouth and eyes. The printer did the rest.
He added battery pack and fairy lights inside the mouth and has a stand for it.
It is big, about the size of my head!!
We got the clear acrylic circles(2 of them) not knowing exactly how we would use them. I suggested this and he loves it. He has a second one on one of the printers now. He will have two done by the next show which is next weekend in Stockton.
He gets away from his mom for the weekend, hopefully makes some money selling some of our stuff(at least enough to cover costs like table fee and hotel, etc) and I get a weekend at home to myself. I will have to go over to check on his mom at least once a day, may do two on Sat. but only one on Sunday. Not skipping church to go check on her.

Nope 2024. All this year, we don’t mess around, ANNNDD we are getting a new car on Thursday. We are going to start leasing.7 -

His settlement was complete, except for this one final thing, last July. That's why we were able to visit Canada in October. This one final thing has finally happened so it's done. Not that he is any better. The brain injury is permanent, and although he's stable right now, he will begin to deteriorate.
It is highly unlikely we'll move back to Canada before I retire. I'm in a good place here with work, and not keen on getting a job in Canada. And the age at which I can retire is still 10 years away.
We'd just like a place where we can cycle out our driveway and where we don't have to climb a hill to do our gardening ... in other words, a flat place. Because Tasmania, and especially the Hobart area, is hilly, many houses, like ours, are built on quite steep slopes. Whilst we like our place, it isn't going to work long term.
