Rita it surprises me that foods that could spike insulin are not discouraged in your diabetic class and or limited. Sounds like they are still on the calories model. A serving of soda and a serving of almonds are about the same calorie but do not have the same affects on your insulin. Also 30 calories are used to digest the almonds, the fiber in the almonds feeds the gut, there is no fiber in soda nor calories used to digest it. Does your class bring out this fact? When you have too much insulin in your blood that is what is turned into fat. Your body handles fats and sugars differently in the digestion process. The 80's pyramid got it wrong. It is insulin gone awry because of what you eat that puts the pounds on. This is why fiber is your friend. Fiber slows down insulin response. So for me there are food choices that do not love me. Those would be high processed food, sugar, and starches that do not have fiber think potato without the skins because they are not good for insulin levels. My diet is not perfect and I am still tweeking it as I learn more but I no longer eat fried foods, rarely starches without fiber, greatly reduced my sugar consumption when giving up gluten foods. My blood levels will not be tested for a few more months so it will be interesting to see if they follow how well my blood pressure is doing now.
Yes, they encourage foods that have better benefits for you. But, they say don’t buy ‘special’ foods, such as low carb or gluten free, unless you have a medical reason to do so. Just limit how much you eat. I have eliminated sugar from my diet from past experiences but no longer buy low carb or gluten free grains. They suggest opting for high fiber, like whole wheat, oat meal, brown rice, etc rather than their white counterparts to get your daily allotment of fiber. I have to limit those because of my colitis, but I can have them if I only have 1 serving of bread or oatmeal, etcetera. They do provide some recipes and advise the use of Whole Foods and unprocessed- low processed foods . But they do say that all foods are good just in limited amounts, or small servings sizes. They do not focus on calories but the quality of those foods. Such as only good fats such as olive oil, all nut oils, not animal fats, or grain fats (canola or corn oil), avocado is also encouraged. If someone wants to continue eating the same way they did before the class, they will not lose weight or feel better. They focus on educating you about what you eat and how much. So, I get a baked potato instead of fries when I eat out and may ‘steal one of DH’s fries, but find I don’t care for them any more. I have changed my diet to focus on veggies and fruit more than any other type of food. It is up to the individual to choose if they want to eat healthy or not. They do not focus on the scale, just the quality of what you eat and your life. If you look back on the classes I’ve posted, it explains it much better than I can. In other words, have that piece of birthday cake, but make it small with a small amount of ice cream if you so wish, but not every day! . It’s all about moderation in all things. I have to remember that 1 serving of rice or pasta is 1/2 cup, not a plate full. If I follow the serving sizes and make sure I have plenty of veggies and fruit, I stay full all day. The sugar in fruit satisfies me whereas cakes or pies leave me wanting more. The program isn’t a diet, it teaches you how to eat properly without eliminating any foods. It is recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). My program is just more in depth than the one Lanette is using from the CDC. Same info, just more of it.
So all foods are good, it is the amount and how you prepare them that is not so good

Dinner yesterday was ham, cheesy potatoes, string bean salad, and an orange.
Here is some info on what the pre-diabetes class says about foods and diets:

Kim - You must be absolutely furious, and that's just fine. Sometimes our local press gets involved with cases like this, which sometimes shifts their a.. into action to sort it out. We have had a similar problem with carer's allowance. A scandal.
Bea has been especially lively this afternoon. Poor Johnny is coping with it all. They have been painting. I just observed. Now they are up in the exercise room and I have been finishing the prep for tea/dinner. Something for everyone. Including Bea's pasta and pesto.
I found a stray bottle of pink AF champagne in the garage, so that's in the fridge.
We had a named storm last night and our old, dead, apple tree, that is covered in ivy, lost its main branch. I think we will have to get professionals in to chop it up and dispose of it. Not cheap!
Just waiting now for the other three to arrive. I did catch a little doze after lunch, so I'm not as knackered as I thought I would be.

weather has really cooled down and a bit cloudy- Will be nice for walking in a few hours over at the wetlands before I pick Ezie up from school but think it will be extra chilly for aqua zumba tonight. High of 69, will be 64 when we are in the pool. I don't want to miss class beings we only have a few more left.
She will start teaching Pilates which I have never tried- will try a class or two but don't think I will stick with it.
Trip to SF went better than dh expected but because they are missing a paper. Her koseki(a type of family tree/ census), we may have to go back if they can find it. She complained about how long it took, about getting stuck in traffic(left SF at 3:30PM-of course there will be traffic, but better than leaving at 5)-Said it would have been better to take a taxi. It took us an hour and fifteen minutes to get home, just slightly less to get there. Can you imagine the cost of a taxi for the three of us that distance AND, he would be stuck in the same traffic we were. Always complains about something- complained about the $40 for the parking garage, about every thing she could. Consulate was great- very patient with her and saw how she was treating dh. I chatted with the security guard while they were being helped, She was saying how good a son he is to be so patient- I told her a few of her mean comments to him lately(not wanting him, wrong son died when his brother died)-this wonderful lady, a total stranger, had tears running down her cheeks. She could not imagine a mother being so mean and hateful but he still was there to help her. Second day in less than a week that I didn't eat all day because of dealing with her. Finally got home to eat at 6:30PM both Sunday and yesterday after not eating all day. Need to pack snacks if I have to deal with her for something like this again.
Social worker comes out on Tuesday, hopefully we can get approved for some help to give dh a break. With the three medical insurances she has, she should qualify for something. I would love for at least 10hrs a week.
Need to get laundry folded and a few other chores that didn't get done yesterday.4 -
Well today is day 1 of my 28 day fasting start up. I am doing the "ripping the bandaid off" Schedule which is just week 1: 6 hour windows, week 2: 6 hour windows, week 3: 5 hour windows and week 4: 4 hour windows. Windows meaning my eating times. The 5 and 4 will be the challenging part, but I will have two weeks under my belt so it will be fine. It's easy to get complacent with intermittent fasting. I cheat here, weighing too often there. Listening to things wishing for a quick solution. But I need to trust the process. I have felt how I feel when I can "get in the zone" of fasting. My body is happy, like she's saying, "nice, you're listening to me". I know many of you think that I am crazy, but that's ok, this is a judge free zone. Its a place of accountability for me, so no need to really discuss what or how intermittent fasting works. I do not post to try to convince any of you to join, we are each doing our own thing, and that's why this thread is so awesome. Like a League of International Healthy eating/living Delagates of SuperLadies!

Hi Gals,
Thanks for the hugs and care.
A bit of clarification:I am paying for my Medicare and supplement every month and they are denying the care that those cover – not my copay, but all the services. I am not sending more money to them. I do not owe it but it is affecting my credit, even if I did send them something it would still affect my credit because they have me listed as no insurance ( I have an insurance card that is current) so in their pea sized brains – actually most likely somewhere on some computer program there is a number transposed or a box incorrectly checked or not-checked – So I committed fraud and owe them for services they gave me by honoring the insurance card they gave me but I did not deserve. Even as I type this it sounds as crazy as can be. There is also threats of police action/suing me for Fraud.
And yes I have my Congressional Representative working on it and they are just spinning their wheels – I think the staff member is either un-trained or un-caring. I am putting together a package to be emailed out it is a ton of work, to scan and transcribe all of this into a single document. I’ll have this document together by Monday and will then be sending it to the lawyer, my counselor, to the other representatives in the government that cover my location, and possibly to the newspaper. Actually I am doing 2 sets one with the identifying info needed to help me (lawyer, and counselor) and one without (other representatives and newspaper)
I am losing trust, my family lies to me, my insurance is lying to me, Medicare is lying to me and so is the staffer at my Congressional Representatives office.
PS breakfast out was great! I got fruit instead of hash browns (one of my favorite things) and brought home ½ of the food…. Little wins
Thinking of you all,

Rebecca - I am not able to do the fasting thing, I just get too light headed and grouchy, but I am in awe of you both by the commitment to doing this and by taking the time to figure out what works for your body and sticking to it, even when you wander away for a bit, you come right back to it . ! Great Job !!!

Kim ~ Sounds like you are being very pro-active and praying that you will get support from all the people you are contacting. What you are going through would drive me batty with worry.
Rebecca ~ Your fasting times will probably work well for you as you have done similar over the past year or two. There is no way I could do that as I like my breakfast, lunch, and dinner and like them at about the same time each day.
I have had a bad couple of days with knee pain, hot to touch, and swelling. I think I have been overdoing the exercises and that is probably contributing to it. I actually bought a compression stocking today and hope it will make the swelling go down.

One of my secrets of adulthood is "if it works, don't fix it". Before I started on MFP, what I was doing with eating and exercise was not working so I was in search of something that would work for me. I found Isagenix shakes for breakfast, an eating plan that was simple for my other meals, and a schedule of eating that kept me from feeling weak and dizzy in between times that I ate. I read what others did and tried their suggestions. I kept what worked, and discarded the rest. I got ideas of inspirational books and podcasts to read and listen to so that I could stay on track. What I do is different from what a lot of you do, but I've found what works. I lost 50 pounds in 2009 and have kept the weight off successfully. I have an eating and exercise program that I can stick to and that fits my lifestyle. It is like a political or spiritual stance in that it is mine but I don't attempt to push it on anyone else.
Would I love to have four kittens? Yes. Do I have the time and energy to take care of them? No. So I'll just enjoy your stories.

Kim - Hope something to do to try to fix this Gordian knot is helping your spirits, and hope it helps your cause.
Rebecca - Fasting is not my journey, but I have enormous respect for those who take that path. Or, for that matter, any path that will get them back to the healthy weight they seek in a way that suits their body and mind and heart. I appreciate when people respect my opinions and my journey, as well.
Barbie - You boil it down so well. "I have an eating and exercise program that I can stick to and that fits my lifestyle. It is like a political or spiritual stance in that it is mine but I don't attempt to push it on anyone else." Pushing anyone to do anything is, in the end, basically useless... Like trying to teach a pig to sing. It just wastes your time and annoys the pig.
Carol - So sorry your knee is cranky today! You can do this my friend. Time and movement is everything, but please take care of yourself.
Annie - Hope Teddy's vet appointment turned out well, and that the sitter was able to get there.
Lanette - Hope your morning errands were fruitful.
Quiet day, just catching up on chores. Am resolutely ignoring the floors. Vacuuming hurts, still. Maybe Monday.
Lovely long gab with my daughter this morning. Bless her, I don't know if she loves it when I drop into story mode or not. She certainly seems to, and she keeps calling, so lets assume she does. 😹 Getting regular updates on Tropical Storm Hone's impact on Oahu, and Hurricane Gilma, hard on its heels, which will probably pass them by, one hopes. I don't get the updates because I ask for them, please note. 👀🤪🥰
But speaking of weather, we're back to heat and sun for the next two weeks to come. Not in a good way, unfortunately. Back to mornings beginning near 80F (27C).

Well, I posted 2 of my black dresses in OfferUp and amazon marketplace to sell. I never have an occasion to wear them, they are just hanging in the closet. I’ll see if I get any takers . I tried them on to see if they would even fit. I had Kirby take pics of me11 -
Carol - hope the compression stocking helps. Should you call your doctor with it being hot and swelling like that? Maybe that's part of the normal healing process.
Heather - you must have had quite a windstorm. My neighborhood is lucky someone didn't lose a branch or two during the storms we had last weekend.
Rebecca - I know you'll do well on your fasting protocol.
Rita - one of the reasons I really like your diabetes prevention program is the detail and explanations they go into, as you mentioned. I understand why they are trying to get participants to adhere to the "plate" layout and to understand portion control right off the bat. Looks like in a month or so my class will be talking in depth about carbs. I'm guessing most people don't have the time to research how carbs impact insulin resistance and how some carbs are directly stored as fat, etc. So the CDC program sticks to the basics. There's research showing that eating fat and protein first in the meal blunts the effect of carbs on insulin spikes, so saving the bread for last, and ice cream for dessert and not eating it as an appetizer (like my diabetic grandfather did ) helps control blood sugar. I'll see in November.
I had an interesting morning....
I didn't find any shoes that fit at New Balance. They were out of stock on the ones I normally buy. I tried on some other styles, they weren't comfy. The clerk said call every week and if they get any of the ones I like in, they'll put them aside for me for 24 hours. Quite pricey now and I'm wondering if I shouldn't switch to another brand. But it would mean driving to the big city or going through the order online/return thing. Ugh. Maybe if I get desperate.
So, I went through my closet, found an older pair of NB's that I had given up wearing because they made my feet sore when I was doing all of that pavement walking with D for 40 minutes to an hour at a time. Now that I'm not doing that anymore, maybe they'll comfortable enough to wear again. The soles are still in good shape. Worth a shot.
AND guess what I found? That gold necklace! And where did I find it? At the bottom of the little wooden box where I keep my earrings. Thought I'd already looked in there, but today I saw it peeking out, sort of hiding in plain sight. I figured!
Cool and rainy today, should be good sleeping tonight.

Kim - thank you, I'll check it out. I went to the New Balance Outlet this morning - evidently this particular model - 1080 - is one of their most popular. Hardly any on the shelf of ANY size. I'm a 9 1/2 D (wide). I'm not choosy about colors.

Whew! ... I am finally caught up and, as usual, you have all been busy! I know I will forget someone, but here's what I remember ...
Tracey ... Congratulations on the new job! And the refinished table looked great!
Monique ... working with sick children ... you have my utmost respect.
Heather ... sounds like you're getting stronger every day!
Barbara ... thank you for sharing the photo of your new pooch ... a cutie!
Barbie ... glad to hear that Jake will have transportation when needed. My son was given a fleet Tesla to drive from work the other day ... a model X ... so "back to the future!"
Kim ... I am so sorry you're dealing with Medicare mistakes. Absolutely crazy.
Margaret ... your perseverance with changing your diet/health is inspiring.
Rita ... does your husband reduce the number of portions he makes when he cooks? You have so much variety in your meals. Like the cheesy potatoes. I have a recipe for that but it would make 12-15 servings. Do you have a lot of leftovers? I think you do great too with taking ownership of your health.
Lisa ... hope your body has finally gotten the bowel issues out of its system ... sorry, couldn't help myself.
Carol ... Funny how we only remember the negatives. I can't believe at 114 pounds anyone, let alone your husband, would tell you to eat less and lose weight. Hope your knee settles down.
Rebecca ... I have recommitted to my "fasting" regimen as well. I am finding that I feel best with a 3-1/2 to 4 hour eating window... 3:30/4:00 to 7:00. Anything past 7:00 and I don't sleep. I'm also trying to increase the veg/fruit count in my day which has fallen woefully short of recommendations for good gut health. Your youngest son's rash/wound not healing ... someone mentioned protein and I would encourage him to up his protein intake and see if it makes a difference. My mom doesn't have diabetes, but when they wanted wounds to heal they gave her liquid protein to speed up the healing.
Debbie ... hoping you can get help with your MIL. Glad to read that your mom's roommate has been told to leave!
Lanette and Kylia ... yay for finding your special jewelry!
Pip ... those black dresses still look great on you!
Hunger ... I struggle with clock hunger and thinking I'm hungry when I'm just thirsty. It's 12:00 so I should be eating. Real hunger for me is a hollow feeling ... sometimes uncomfortable with some growling in my upper abdomen. Always higher than I think it should be. Right now I'm dealing with altered taste. While most of my taste came back after my cochlear implant, there is a part that is not quite right. Everything tastes very salty, fruits aren't quite right and food high in fat feels like (I think) whale blubber on my tongue. Do you think this curtails my eating? Nope.
Saying I Love You ...It was not part of my normal dialog before my son died. Now I say it all the time. Every time I leave my mom, I give her a kiss and tell her I love her because at 93 I just don't know if it's the last time. Tell my son the same each day when he leaves for work. And my husband ...not as much as I should.
Age Calculator ... I'm supposed to live to 90 and I absolutely do not want to live that long! I have had exposure to many elderly family/friends/acquaintances and I've observed that when you turn 90 it's like a switch flips ... everything changes. It's the rare 90+ year old that does well. I'm pretty sure I won't be one of them.
My mom ... well it finally happened. After 3 months waiting in a sub-par rehab facility, she was moved into the long-term care facility of my choice! We moved her on the 15th and we've been busy getting her room to reflect her personal tastes. I cannot tell you in how many ways this new place is different from all of the other facilities we have been involved in. Night and day differences. ALL of the staff from the head nurse to the dietary aide speak to her with respect and treat her with kindness … so much so that it brings my mom to tears. The intake process was the most thorough and appropriate that we have experienced. A couple days in, they asked my mom if she wanted anything and we asked that maybe she could have toast for breakfast the next day as she hasn’t had a decent piece of toast in two years. Ten minutes later there was a dietary aide at her door with toast and butter. She ate it all and declared it delicious!! Now I know they were making a point, but it was still a really nice thing to do. I am finally able to leave her knowing that she is well-cared for, safe and comfortable.

In my 28 day start up, the author talks about
Either you're fasting clean, or you're doing a low calorie diet.
The last thing I want is to diet. I have done it all my life and its gotten me nowhere. Now I just want to listen, to let my body heal on it's own, and come out in a healthier state then now.
When our body fasts and after glucose stores are depleated, and go into ketosis, it can be an interesting time. Headaches can happen, but for me putting a kernel of pink Himalayan salt under my tongue worked magic. To know that after I lose the excess weight the chance of having lots of excess skin is minimal, is encouraging. Putting my body in autophagy takes care of that. IF also helps with inflammatory issues, and helps me from getting Alzheimer's. Pretty much a win win, which I ponder during times I feel hungry.

Oh I am so happy about your momma! Brought tears to my eyes, as I know you are so relieved!
I think I am the same way, as I had opened my window at 3 today and was kinda done by 7pm, although I was to have a six hour eating window until 9 pm. That's just too late for me. I sleep better on an empty belly. I had my taco salad, ear of corn, and 2 baby brie bites. Then a Fresca. I wasn't totally full, but not blasted hungry. I am sipping a Pellegrino water at 7:41 pm happy about the day. I have a bunch of those steamer bags of veggies that are yummy. Tomorrow its the rest of my microwavable hearty grain bags, a veggie bag, and a chicken thigh. Then a plate of crackers, cheddar cheese, my pickled asparagus, and maybe a piece of chocolate with coffee the way I like it.

She could not imagine a mother being so mean and hateful but he still was there to help her.
Has she said those things recently? Or was that quite a number of years ago.
(((Kim))) ... I really hope you can get things sorted.

I tightened things up this week ... ate less, exercised more ... and lost a kilogram.
