Hi, Thank you for the welcome. This time around I am trying the slimming world route.
I am in my sixties, I want to keep up with my very energetic young grandchildren, I work in mental health and work late evenings so snacking late at night is a thing I have to fit in with my new way of eating.2 -
Bonnie, Slimming World sounds very interesting. I hope it works out well for you.Slimming World - how it works
Slimming World operates on a system called Food Optimising. This system divides food into three categories: Free Foods, Healthy Extras, and Syns.
Free Foods. These include lean meats, fish, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. You can eat these foods freely without counting or measuring.
Healthy Extras. These are foods that provide essential nutrients, such as fibre and calcium. They include whole grains, milk, and cheese, which you measure and include in your daily diet.
Syns. Short for synergy, these are foods that are higher in calories and less nutrient-dense. Each food has a Syn value, and you have a daily Syn allowance to use on treats or foods that don’t fit into the Free Foods or Healthy Extras categories.
The programme encourages regular physical activity through its Body Magic initiative, which helps members gradually increase their activity levels.

Hello everyone
My name is Susan. I am 60 years old and have about 175 lbs to lose. I am currently around 340. I have been overweight all my life and at one point had gotten to 459 lbs. I have used mfp before and find that counting calories work best for me but always stop before reaching all my goals. I would like to talk with others that have similar circumstances for motivation and maybe make a few friends along the way.

I have been over 300lb in my time, starting this I weighed in at about 279. I have yo yo dieted most of my life.
Always happy to support, always happy to chat5 -
I 1000% did not want to go to the gym today but I showed up for myself & ran 4 miles on the elliptical in 38 minutes. I’m proud of myself 💪

Wow, this post has really grown. Nice to see so many new members showing up and kicking butt. I've been struggling. I got down to the 270's and then went back up to the 280's where i'm currently stuck due to bad eating habits. Hopefully I can overcome this hurdle soon and get back on track.

A little gain for me this week.
I gained 2.5lbs, which I'm ok with considering I thought it would be more. I had my family reunion, I ate and drank pretty freely so didn't follow any plan for the few days I was there. That takes me up to 298.5, but I had a great time and don't regret any part of what I ate and drank.
The biggest win though was something my dad said. I mentioned as I was leaving that I'd been working on getting healthier, and he said "I noticed that you've lost weight, but didn't want to say anything, as I know I've not done so well with that in the past". I nearly cried. He took into account what I told him a few years ago about how his comments affected me. He gave me a hug, and told me to keep up the good work. The whole few days couldn't have gone any better (especially as England also won the European Championship, so it was a perfect time!).

Weekly weigh in:
Starting weight: 317.6
Current weight: 274.2
Lost a few pounds this week! 🙌 increased my workout to 4 miles in the gym and definitely sweat A LOT this week. It was also my dad’s birthday last weekend so I had a piece of cake and ice cream which I was worried about, but I still made progress overall throughout the week! Yay!

I "only got to visit for 24 hours", the next day I was up to 202 lbs !!! (I knew that was to be expected, so I wasn't surprised or sad).🙄

I like your attitude Brian. You had a short visit to “One-derland.” I hope you enjoyed it, because you’ll soon be a permanent resident. 😀
2 -
Well I lost another lb this week, so happy with that. Every step counts, as they say :)
3 -
Good attitude Jen. “Keep up the good work.”

Congrats on the weight loss Jules. 3 lbs is a lot! You’re doing great. We need to have cake once in a while or we’ll go nuts. I know I will. 🤪

Yes it does, Bonnie. Every lb lost removes 4 lbs of pressure off your knees, and gets you closer to your goal. Nice job.

Weigh-In: SATURDAY

Past Weight: 199.6 lbs
Current Weight: 202.2 lbs

Exercise💦: 5 hours this week
[Well, my stay in “onederland” was very short – 48 hours !!! I expected under normal circumstances that my weight would bounce back up (and down, again… repeat) as a weigh daily. My weight this week went up more – and I expect I’ll be losing slower 😐️ – because of Tuesday’s 6-month GP checkup. My bloodwork showed I was “somewhat anemic,” 😕 and while not a cause for alarm, doctor wants me to take a daily iron supplement, eat some lean red meat once a week, and eat more protein in general. I knew I needed more protein… but now I know why I’ve been so tired, and my exercising has decreased by half, each week. Eight years ago (60 years of age) I went through a one-month period being very anemic and had 5 blood transfusions over a weekend in the hospital… and yes, the doctors were stymied as to the reason, except probably it was dietary.]

Current weight: 239.8 lbs
Highest weight: 260 lbs (2013)
Ultimate goal weight: 150 lbs
Steps to goal weight: 220 - 180 - 150 lbs
I started dental treatment this month. Out of necessity (molars missing, super sore tongue), I have ended up eating less :(.

Ouch! I often bite my tongue, so I know how you feel. Since you can’t eat much, try making fruit smoothies with a scoop of protein powder. I don’t drink cow’s milk. I use soy milk and frozen berries for mine. 😋0 -
Brian, regarding your Anemia, is it possible that you're exercising too much? My guess is, you're probably getting enough exercise in your day to day life, and don't need to add any extra. 🏃🏻♂️
Yes, excessive exercise, particularly high-intensity or endurance training, can contribute to anemia. This is often due to iron deficiency, where the body loses iron faster than it can be replenished, leading to reduced red blood cell production. However, it's important to distinguish between true anemia and "sports anemia," a temporary and often benign condition related to increased plasma volume during exercise.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Iron Deficiency and Anemia:
Intense exercise, especially in endurance sports, can increase iron loss through various mechanisms. These include:
- Increased red blood cell destruction: Exercise can cause red blood cells to rupture, particularly as they pass through capillaries in muscles.
- Gastrointestinal blood loss: High-impact exercise can lead to minor bleeding in the digestive tract.
- Sweat and urine: Iron is also lost through sweat and urine, especially during prolonged exercise.
- When iron loss exceeds intake and the body's ability to recycle iron, it can lead to iron deficiency anemia.
- Iron deficiency anemia is characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells or a decreased level of hemoglobin (the protein that carries oxygen) in the blood.
- Symptoms: Fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and decreased athletic performance are common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia
Appropriate training:
Gradual increases in exercise intensity and duration can help the body adapt and minimize iron loss
3 - Increased red blood cell destruction: Exercise can cause red blood cells to rupture, particularly as they pass through capillaries in muscles.

Wow !!! Thanks for all "iron" info 💖… I've 'copy and pasted' everything for my files !!! I'll get back to you on my thoughts once I've read and 'digested' it all !!!🤔
