Was planning on going for an early run, this past Thurs morning, to beat the heat, but woke up feeling like I had a broken toe! Getting old is a wonderland of 'WTF?'!🤷♂️
I don't think the toe is actually broken but something weird happened to it.
Could not run, but tried out walking on it and that wasn't too painful, but after I spoke to my physio & he asked me not to run on it & he mentioned if it was still sore Friday when I woke up to give it a few days of complete rest.
When I started to argue a bit, he mentioned 'a knife in my foot that I didn't feel.'
He reminded me that by the time I feel it, that it has gone past a warning sign for me, it's my body's 'mayday, we're going down'. Sigh…., he's known me too long, I hate when I know he's right….
Think I may have stressed the toe out a bit on some hills while digging in & pushing up off my toes, my best guess anyway.
So - past several days trying not to put any undo pressure on toes & instead putting undue pressure on my *kitten* while sitting around.5 -
Hey @John772016 toes are nothing to mess with...recover and live to run another day.
I ran 3.67M at 13'18 out at the lake.It is a nice warm day, high seventies, dry with a breeze.

Nice running and weeding @martaindale . I'm glad the TX weather isn't unbearable yet.
You're doing great @tarun_yadavA . Sounds like a full schedule for the rest of July! Enjoy all the activities!
You are doing great to keep the streak up @SummerSkier . I guess by now you have figured out which shoes to wear and which ones to let rest a bit. Hang in there and hopefully you will be back to normal in Aug.
Sorry about your toe @John772016 . I hope it is better after a few days of rest.
Great run @chris_in_cal .

I am posting two runs. Friday I ran 6 miles. It was another pretty pleasant, but otherwise uneventful run. I took a rest day yesterday. We drove over to our daughter's house to help her with some yard work and then met with our son and his girlfriend nearby for a late lunch. Today I ran 11 miles. It was nit too uncomfortable for mist if the run. The last mile was pretty hit, but there was a nice breeze for most of it.
I am so sorry @AlphaHowls. There is just no easy way through this.
@Scott6255 You have a beautiful family. Looks like you had a great time until the trip home. Hope you feel better soon.
@John772016 Hope the toe is better soon.
@quilteryoyo Thanks! So far I am loving the new job.

@John772016 Hope the toe is better soon. Could it be Gout?
took a rest day yesterday and managed a small mile for my streak in the rain. Such strange July weather but I guess mother nature will do what she likes.
@tarun_yadavA 😂🤷♀️😂 I can't help myself.🙂

Felt really good last week until friday and then I was exhausted! Enjoying going to the gym to workout vs doing it at home. My coach wants to add in gym machines now that I am going reguarly, I had been only doing hand weights and body weight. I am all for it but not sure how it will work with machine availability. It isn't crowded when I go but there are def some popular machines..and so annoying when people just sit there on them and play on their phones while they "rest".
This week should be smooth sailing but need to drink MORE water! I think we are going to order our OURA rings this week as well. I am not 100% sold on them though. Anyone else have one?
@quilteryoyo I don't know how you function in that heat LOL! We have been reaching low 70's and this morning we woke up grumbling how hot it was in the house. But we do have high humidity and no breeze lately. My Mom loved estate auctions…and then she would send it to me LOL. I have an antique chinese ceder trunk in storage from her that has been moved across the country several times…probably not best for it LOL.

95 of 200k for the month. Did a 17k LSD on saturday that was more like a VVSshuffle. Very very slow, likely due to the heat so it was a bit of a drag. Started at 20c very sunny finished at 30c. Probably because of this, sunday morning woke up to a super sore super stiff low back. 2nd time this has happened. Hmmm 🤷♂️. Tried to go for a trail run after stretching but nope. Could not bounce could not run. Funny seeing me hobble on the trail bent over hands holding the low back🧙. I think I'm a couple of decades too early for this. Anyway, switched it up to, lets walk it off, and that really helped loosen things up. At least I got some elevation in. Weather has been super weird here. It got to 32c/90f on saturday and today its a max of 13c/55f with rain and some places reported dollar coin sized hail. Going to remain about 20c for the rest of the week and it's July! 👿 there goes the summer.
Nice running everyone!
@John772016 if the toe feels warm to the touch and reddish, it could be gout. Ask me how I know…🙄

It isn't crowded when I go but there are def some popular machines..and so annoying when people just sit there on them and play on their phones while they "rest".
Oh yeah. As a certified grumpy old dude, I pompously sneer at people who hold their phones in their hands throughout their workout in the gym. (Sorry, I feel this way about carrying a phone on a run too) I happily (and pompously) track my workouts on my watch. Seeing them focused on their phones in the gym both makes me frustrated and a bit sad for humanity. There are worse things someone could do, but in those moments all I can think is that those "rest sitting on a machine while doomscrolling" people are inconsiderate.
But @CMorning99 as a pretty new gym user, it is a skill to learn how to remain flexible in my workout plan by moving some exercise up in the routine and moving the other one back until a machine is available.

Re: Oura Ring
Hey @CMorning99 a youtuber I watch "The Quantified Scientist" rates Oura as the top in health tracking with a great user interface (Sleep, Heart Rate, etc) It is his own personal goto. But, he rates them poorly on activity tracking like running, bicycling, strength training etc….and says that's Garmin's domain.

It was 68°F this morning. It wasn't exactly cool, but it was cool for summer and was very pleasant and I ran 6.25 miles.

I ran 2.77M at 12'40. Supposed to be fast but I started late and didn't have extra energy to push it. The weather was lovely and a nice sunset.
6 -
Morning all
Got in 5.5M at 10'44

I didn't run yesterday due to lack of motivation to do anything. Today my lower back is screaming at me. I don't know what did to it. Running today might not happen again for that reason.
4 -
@chris_in_cal From what I read about the Oura vs Garmin is that Oura is like having a life couch while Garmin is like a fitness coach. I think the Oura would work for me now as I crawl back out of the hole I have dug for myself.

July total: 35.9 miles
YTD: 507.7 miles
7/1: 3 miles
7/6: 3 miles
7/9: 5.2 miles
7/10: 3 miles
7/11: 4 miles
7/12: 8.1 miles
7/14: 3 miles
7/15: 6.6 miles
Logging 2 runs. Yesterday was a pretty uneventful prework short run. I tried out some new shorts. They’re pretty good and I’ll keep them. Ever since Athleta stopped making the Run with It short, I’ve been looking for my new perfect short. Oiselle Roga is the current top pick but still not perfect. Sigh, I’ll find them one day!
Today I took advantage of not being in clinic for a longer mid week run. It was hot and humid but again I found myself reflecting on how much more pleasant this summer has been. The difference between low 70’s and upper 70’s, even with 95%+ humidity is noticeable and I’m noticing that I don’t feel as wiped out after a longer run this year. That’s been nice.

Thanks @chris_in_cal, @quilteryoyo, @kgirlhart, @SummerSkier, & @WarmJellyfish, the toe is doing better after many rest days.
Pretty sure it was some sort of muscle strain. The digging in on hills I was doing, trying to improve my hill work, & the older shoes, that likely need to be retired, probably just aggravated the strain. I didn't actually have most symptoms of gout & don't actually eat that many foods that would contribute to it so don't think that was the culprit. At any rate, I gave it 5 days and seems to be better which I'm happy about.Nice runs @chris_in_cal, @quilteryoyo, @kgirlhart, @tarun_yadavA, @SummerSkier, @CMorning99, @WarmJellyfish, @yirara & @martaindale!
Hope your back is feeling better soon @angf0679!
Posting 2 days.

10/07, 11/07, 12/07, 13/07, & 14/07 - 0km
15/07 - 6.63km / 4.12 miles
Total = 45.43km / 28.23 miles (Goal - 161Km / 100 miles)Took another rest day yesterday, technically for letting the toe relax, but honestly the air quality was up there with as the worst in the world due to the smoke from wildfires in Northern Ontario hanging over the city. When I was breathing heavy & my eyes were burning a bit, just while I was watering my plants on my balcony, pretty sure 'trying out a run' wasn't a good idea, so didn't.
Today, we moved down on the worst air quality list , so thought I'd try a run. The air quality didn't seem too bad to me, but it was humid! Felt like 33⁰ C while I was running this morning, supposed to once again feel like 40⁰ C' this afternoon.Still need to find the 'sweet spot' this summer - the run early enough to 'not be too hot yet' but late enough to 'not be in the city rush hour' where I'm dodging cars that aren't bothering to look for pedestrians.

@CMorning99 You did great last week! Keep it up! I like the gym machines, but you are right, sometimes they are taken and then you just have to move on and go to something else. You're weather sounds great to me. I think it is all in what you get used to. Post a picture of the trunk. I'd love to see it.
You're doing great @WarmJellyfish . No harm in walking when it is that hot and/or you are in pain. 😉
Glad you are feeling better @yirara .
Sounds like great weather @kgirlhart .
That looks pretty fast to me @chris_in_cal . Are you following another plan?
I hope your back feels better @angf0679 .
Nice runs @martaindale .
@John772016 I'm glad that resting is all that your toe needed. Good choice to not run in those conditions yesterday. With that air quality, you would have probably done more harm to your health than good.

Posting two days again.
Yesterday morning, I was sort of on hold, waiting for my neighbor to be able to take me to drop off my old car to get new brakes while I'm gone this week. He was waiting on a repairman and you know how that goes. We wound up not being able to take it yesterday because the guy was so late getting here and we had other things to do….like mow my mom's lawn, which we did at about 12:30.
When I got home, I went out for a driveway wun before taking a shower It was 88F (31C), so pretty hot. I didn't have much time because I needed a shower and to eat something before playing tennis at 5:30.
The tennis match was fun (indoors, but still hot). We played two sets with different partners. We lost my first set 1-6. Then second, with a new partner, was tied at 6-6 and we lost 2-7 in a tie break. It was fun, but I didn't feel like I played my best. Could be I was tired before we got started?
Today, first thing was dropping my car off at the shop. When I got home, I went ahead and did a driveway wun. It was only 81F (27C), but was more oppressive than yesterday, even though the humidity was horrible at 72%. The run was at a 13:20 min/miles pace. Avg HR was 134 with a max of 155 bpm.
The rest of the day was spent getting things done for my trip.
6 -
I ran 2.18M at 13'38 out by Mission Bay.
I went back to Garmin because they supposedly have a "adaptive" Training Plan app. To experiment with it. I started a 13-week running plan with a target of "fitness" the other option is to pick a race and it trains you for that.
If this amorphous adaptive "fitness" plan goes ok, I might then use it to train for a race.

7/15: 6.52 miles
81.15/160 miles completed for July
It was warmer this morning than yesterday, but still nice. I decided to do a threshold run today. I thought it went well. I ended up with 6.5 miles and Garmin upgraded me from "maintaining" to "productive".
5 -
Another trip @quilteryoyo ? another 5k too?
I have my Dr appt today so will ask about my foot and see if he thinks I should get xrays. The bump on it is gone now so it is just still a little sore. I suspect it will be better completely in a few more weeks so probably not any use at this point. Always hard to tell if what I do is making it worse or better. I did try staying off completely but that did not really seem to make much difference and just made my brain worse.
Meanwhile continuing my little streak for July and as with all things time will tell. ✅
5 -
My back (so far) isn't aching today. I just feel a little stiff. I have little time to run on Wednesdays but hope tomorrow.
4 -
@chris_in_cal I've seen those adaptive plans, but never tried one. You'll have to let us know how it goes. The race training plans are supposed to be "adaptive" too, but I don't really think they are.
You did great @kgirlhart .
@SummerSkier Heading to FL for a family get-together. No 5K this time. I hope the doctor gives you some sound advice and that your foot gets back to normal soon.
Hopefully your back will be better tomorrow and you'll have a great run @angf0679 !
1 -
@chris_in_cal am currently on one of the Garmin plans. It does adapt. There are metrics of training readiness and status. It also helps if you track how well you slept and stress levels. Damn thing keeps changing my training plan when I've had a crappy night's sleep.
@SummerSkier hope the foot is ok.
@martaindale what did you like about the Athleta shorts? I'm also on the hunt.
@John772016 yay for the toe. Booo on the smoke.
Did a leisurely (sorta) run yesterday. Was looking forward to doing a threshold today but garmin moved that tomorrow. Will be a long run instead today. My neck of the woods is supposed to dry semi arid but its been raining so much, I'd think I was in Vancouver instead. Wild bushes are loving it, my local trail run route here is sooooo overgrown. Might have to bring a machete next time. Tomorrow's run will be in another expected deluge, puddle splashing, swimsuit weeee…..
5 -
Yes, @WarmJellyfish it jumps around on what the rest of the week's plan is. I look at the schedule for the week, and the next day it is different. That is a difference I'm adjusting to.
I've never done any HR training or thought about HR much, but for this experiment on an adaptive training plan I chose to have all of my workouts prescribed by Heart Rate, instead of Pace. That's different for me. Intervals are difficult to hit, my heart rate is generally normal or a bit low, so ramping up isn't easy. But I'm getting used to it.5 -
