Now, someone calls in and we typically only have the person on shift working another 4 hours before they are sent home and someone is in place to relieve them.
I wish that worked n my job. They won't do a split. It's double or... double. They don't care how long it takes home, etc. Oh, and you're not properly rested after a double? Why not? We gave you 8 hours off!
Seems dumb. It's like, "If you want me to live here, just say so and I'll move in. Which bathroom is mine?"0 -

True.
Unfortunate that people build homes in these locations, and the risks involved for the firefighters.
People think that forest fires are horrible, and they are to residents for sure. Unfortunately fighting those fires screws with nature's mechanisms of replenishment.0 -

I don't think it's unfortunate that people BUILD homes in these locations, I think it is unfortunate that they are reluctant to LEAVE those homes in times like this. My cousin Christa and her two boys live up that way, they didn't wait for level 3 door to door evacuations, they just left as soon as she heard it on the radio.
She is post divorce and just BARELY turned that house into a real home and she abandoned it without a second thought. Her life and that of her children, ex-husband, brother, and in-laws were all that was important in that moment.
For some reason, other seemingly 'normal' people don't think like that....0 -

That can be really dangerous. But my pipes, phone, computers, and other electronics value your time spent there and we all(if electronics are sentient) hope you are appropriately compensated.0 -

I'm glad I have a job, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to find something better.
Eh. I think the whole problem comes down from the admin, leaving us minimally filled position wise. Short version of the story is they noticed we managed to function without an assistant director so they never refilled that. Down one counselor, but all clients covered, so we may get one more recovery specialist (my job, though I started as a counselor, it's a long story), but they sure are slow about hiring. They move at snail pace and lose most prospects to competing jobs.0 -

Take all that money you would've spent on your days off, stick it in the bank, retire at 46! #problemsoved

Snail pace? You work for the state like I do?
I had my FIRST interview on Oct. 24th, 2014. Heard nothing until December 16th about paperwork, scheduling a polygraph, physical, and the second interview.
Second interview was on December 29th, phone interview. Then I got the job offer on January 11th, 2015 but my start date was postponed until February 2nd.
Passed my 6 month evaluation with great marks on August 14th! I love what I do and I guess I'm good at it. It's what they tell me anyway.0 -
I'm jealous of the good pay. Time to go mooch off my geo.0

Every check is spoken for.
I have no kids and, very shortly, I will be putting myself through school. Should be awesome. At least my mom will be back during that time so I can schedule more time with my Sergeant Sexy Pants. I might be able to live the life of a 'normal' 26 year old female human!0 -

For some reason, other seemingly 'normal' people don't think like that....
I absolutely agree with the latter, with any circumstance, the reluctance of leaving one's home (while I do understand it's their home) is just... I'm trying to find a word for "stupid" that's not "stupid," just because it sounds insulting which I am not trying to be. My mother refused to leave her home during Hurricane Sandy as much as I tried to get her too... to find flood waters rising and she was panicking on the phone when I had checked on her. I definitely let her have it later.0 -

You can say stupid because you are referring to an action. The act of not leaving your home in the event of a natural disaster is stupid. It doesn't mean the PEOPLE are stupid, just that their action is.
Even smart people do stupid things. It doesn't mean that they are no longer intelligent.0
