    You realize that DS'ers are supposed to follow high protein high fat diet, yes? McDonalds burgers without a bun is...high protein, high fat. GASP WHO WOULD EAT HIGH FAT HIGH PROTEIN ON A HIGH FAT HIGH PROTEIN DIET!?!?!
    Btw, it's not like I even eat there every day.

    My sister had the gastric sleeve done last December and is down about 70 lbs.

    She too was prescribed a lower carb, higher fat, higher protein diet.

    She was told to cook most of her meals, get as many vegetables as possible, and eat an overall very healthy, nutrient packed diet.

    Once she got past the initial stages of food reintroduction, she was never advised to become a fast food queen, or to limit vegetables.

    I don't have any idea who gave you such bad advice.

    I admit I had to google the surgery. sounds very intense and the stats in some studies show it to be more likely to cause nutritional deficiencies than other forms of WLS. if you aren't getting the nutritional help you need then ask for a referral to a Registered Dietitian (known as an RD or RDN). Don't be afraid to get another opinion or to see someone else. This is your health that can be risk here if you become deficient in certain vitamins and minerals. if you aren't getting anywhere with the surgeon who did the weight loss surgery then ask your primary care doctor for a referral.
    I don't think anyone here can really advise you in the way you need. Good luck to you.

    There is an epidemic of undiagnosed thyroid conditions in the US!

    I also suggest Garcinia Cambogia if there is any emotional eating or large appetite involved.

    Surely Candidates for WLs would have to have blood work beforehand and OP would already know if her thyroid function was abnormal.

    She would also be informed of which supplements are required.

    I love it when people (usually men) say that ****. They just think because it works for them it works for everybody. If it were that simple then why can some people eat whatever they want, not exercise, and not gain? It's genetics and some of us have to eat PERFECTLY to be lean and some don't. I've accepted that to be a healthy weight I have to eat only fruits, vegetables, and lean meat. I will have to count calories for the rest of my life and worry about every piece of food I ever touch. It is what it is, and there are many people like me.

    My husband is a bit different. For fun I've had him log his calories with me. He eats around 3000-5000 on average, often fast food and ~2 2-liters of coke a day. I've seen him eat over 10,000 calories in a single day and although he felt like a sluggish piece of crap the rest of that day, his small weight gained was lost over the following 2-3 days when he returned to the normal 3k+ diet. He is 5 foot 10 and 175lbs, its his metabolic baseline. When he falls below it his body will cause him to gain and if he overeats himself into literally a food coma his body will fight to bring him back down to that weight.

    If it were as simple as calories in and calories out and that really worked- my husband would be a 400lbs morbidly obese person. He has no self control and refuses to restrict himself- and why should he? His doctor says hes healthy as a clam and his blood levels are all perfect. In comparison to myself to carefully logs my food and primarily dines on fruits, veggies, and lean meat I have high cholesterol, am overweight, and pre-diabetic.

    I do however know the truth. I must eat 4 means of ~400 calories each of clean, lean, and low processed food and I can lose weight. Its hard, its unfair, it makes me angry, it makes me cranky- but that the end of the day it comes down to this question:

    Would you rather have pleasure in eating or a nice body? If the answer is a nice body then just understand if your body is like mine you can ever enjoy food again. Just accept that.

    I am new to this so may misinterpret others' established relationships (and possibly "characters") on these forums. In my own idealistic way I am appalled at the attacks and self-righteousness.

    Most amazing to me is that I read and posted earlier today and come back this evening to see everyone is still going strong.

    Sheesh.....get outside and get some fresh air and vitamin D people. No reply needed that someone is posting this from your phone as you rode your bike through the park. Read my "diary" all you want.....oh wait, I have set that for friends only......I had a fun drive-thru late night meal from Taco Bell myself last night after a fun night with friends at happy hour. It busted my day's calories straight through Willie Wonka's glass roof. How dare anyone go through someone's HONEST tracking and be nasty about it.

    The personal attacks are completely unnecessary and those that resort to them will never truly be taken seriously. They are still extremely hurtful to those working through these things day by day just like anyone else putting any effort into this site.

    I can see these message boards are definitely something I will be avoiding.

    Genetics really doesn't have that much effect here. Men typically have a higher muscle lower bodyfat composition relative to a woman of equivalent size and fitness and therefore typically require maybe 200 more calories. Men are also on average larger than women in both height and weight which significantly increases there maintenance level. Personally I maintain at about 3000 which I think isnt out of the ordinary for someone my size, lean mass and activity level. If I wss larger and more active I may maintain at 4000. This doesn't make me a genetic anomaly or predisposed to be skinny. Its just physics and math. Moving a larger mass takes more energy. More you move it the more energy it takes. This is not a law you can circumvent with genetics.

    I've read that most people who others think eat tons with no consequences actually don't, over the long term. Or they do but they burn it.

    4L of Coke every day would be a pain to haul home and his teeth must be a wreck? Mine hurt just thinking about it. That's like 2 cups of sugar and 1600 calories. Now my pancreas hurts, too.

    OP, I feel really bad for you. I've only read the first 2 pages and will get back to read the rest later. My two bits of advice:
    1) Look for specialists (WLS Diatitians) in other states that will Skype your appointments working with your doctor.
    2) Don't take advice from people on a diet forum who haven't gone through surgery.

    I didn't at all get the impression that the OP was asking for advice. She was making an argument using anecdotal evidence re calories in vs. calories out. Also, she's claiming (and I have no reason to disbelieve her) to be losing just fine. Oh, and she was kind of venting about her nutritionist, which may or may not be justified, none of us have any ability to know.

    Even accepting the numbers in this post as accurate, this is not evidence against "calories in, calories out" (except for the assertion that the poster would gain on the same calories of other foods--barring some kind of metabolic syndrome or other medical condition I don't believe that, although what you eat affects how you feel and whether a particular number of calories are sustainable). NO ONE claims that calories in will be the same for everyone, because of course calories out varies. If you burn less (for example, if you are smaller, have a lower percentage of LBM--women tend to, compared to men--move less, or just have a slower metabolism for various reasons), your calories out will be lower, so you will have to have lower calories out to lose or maintain. That's not remotely a contradiction of CI/CO. One of the problems is that people apparently tend to read CI/CO as "you are a big, fat pig and eat too much" and in our society, especially for women, there's this stigma to eating a lot so people want to say that they gained weight eating relatively little. That's understandable (although probably not super helpful to weightloss for most), but even if your metabolism is such that that's true, that doesn't mean that CI/CO doesn't work or that there's some magical exception (i.e., if I eat a gummi bear, will I still lose?--suggesting that people think some foods have properties that make CI/CO not work, so you have to figure out what they are and avoid them as if they were fat pills).

    If I eat rice my belly will swell up, get very inflamed, and I will show weight gain. It will take a couple days for the weight to fall off. Could you be eating foods that irritate your system because that will show weight gain when its just irritated.

    Also, it takes about 3 days for my body to adjust my weight because of my diet. Meaning if I pig out on a Saturday I will not see weight gain until Tuesday. Same with eating healthy. It takes me a few days to see the weight drop. I am hypothyroid though so I have a slower metabolism.

    I am sure that's why some people can't gain weight and despite medically crafted diets with extreme excess calories they continue to return to a baseline underweight BMI. Scientists have already discovered which genes make people "genetically skinny". The University of Lausanne in Switzerland did a massive study to discover that those who don't have the gene are 43 times more likely to be overweight. Those who have duplicates of that same gene are 23 more times likely to be underweight.

    Unless you are some religious nut you probably believe in evolution and these types of genetic differences are far form out of the ordinary. We see it replicated in various species of animals as well, we are only animals ourselves. Anyway, for your viewing pleasure see below.

    I watched a documentary on a study that was done in regards to metabolism, types of meals, exercise and weight loss. Here's something that caught my attention in regards to "how much" we eat. There's two considerations, there's "how much" BULK we eat and "how much" CALORIC density is packed in the amount we eat.

    An overweight woman said she didn't eat as much as her skinnier friend. That fact was true in that she didn't eat the same BULK of food. However, in closer examination of caloric intake, despite 'eating less', in bulk, she was 'eating more' in calories. It's not easy to lose weight eating less in bulk but more in calories. I'm not suggesting that's what's happening to you. I'm suggesting to look very closely and modify your accounting by careful measurement.

    In regards to 'starvation mode', well, look up the link above.

    I also found interesting reading on the Mayo Clinic website - so much so I strongly suggest you go see for yourself. It's largely targeted at ppl with heart conditions and diabetes but it's also aimed at ppl who are overweight.
