Why are people so hateful??

Anyone else come in line with some down right hostile threads going on here.....This is supposed to be a place of help and support, not ripping each other to shreds on who is right and wrong. Just because it worked for you doesn't mean it will for someone else and vice versa. Am I alone on this? :grumble:

No you're not alone in this. I stay off these main boards most of the time for that reason. Try and find a group or two here that fits what you are trying to do and join them. You might get better advice and support that way.

    Good luck.

I don't know about hateful but I have seen frustration, and for good reason. You are correct that not everyone will have the same approach to weight loss/ creating a healthy lifestyle. The two aren't synonymous. There a many posts each day that reflect poorly on the OP because they make claims that are false. There are also new people here on MFP looking for solid advice. It gets frustrating because people are easily led astray by others who don't properly back up their claims. It only seems hateful when people start to disagree. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing, but false claims are never taken well here.

Hi, not everyone is nice, it's a sad fact of life. Best thing to do is if you see someone you truly can't stand click beneath their name and you can put them on ignore. Don't let a few people get you down.

    ^ this... 100% this.

Some people are jerks, some are oversensitive, and some ignorantly cling to myths that have been debunked with science.

Nice is relative. Matter-of-fact is often confused with being mean. Also, disagreement is not being mean. I may not agree with your approach at all, but because I say so doesn't mean I'm being mean to you. If you're juicing, I happen to think juicing is stupid. So, I'm going to say that to you. And, I say that to people in real life too. It's not mean, it actually is stupid.

No you're not alone in this. I stay off these main boards most of the time for that reason. Oh and the "person above you" threads which just foster judgmental behavior and talk! Try and find a group or two here that fits what you are trying to do and join them. You might get better advice and support that way.

    Good luck.

WHAT?! I thought the "person above you" threads were for FUN--you know, like a joke that everyone's in on. Wow! I've been doing them wrong. People who think my name should be Vicki and work at Banana Republic and look like Mayim Bialik and think I look like I'm nice were being MEAN and judgmental? Oh, I'm SO MAD NOW (I'm not).

I THANK all the "mean" people of MFP who helped me get my head outta my butt and on the right, scientifically based path to success! THANK YOU MEAN PEOPLE!:flowerforyou: 10/10 would date all the mean peoplez!

    truthful.

but I am mostly sad that I miss all of these- find them after they are balls deep in arguments- and then can't be arsed to catch myself up.

damn work. screwing up my internet goofing off.

Hmm, I think I must not understand the meaning of "hateful". I see none of that in that thread, just some misinformation quoted as "truth", bad advice from "trainers", and a few people linking actual, useful information. Which ones are the hateful ones?

Cold hard truth or is someone being actually hostile?

Because civility is dead and everyone thinks they're right and wants to be. Admitting you're wrong has become a taboo in society in this day and age. There have always been unpleasant people but the internet makes it even more so and it spills over into the real world.

Yep. Apparently correcting misinformation is hateful.

This is why I avoid teachers.

Wait what? We are sitting in "Motivation and Support" category of the Community Forum.

    Your response is confusing me.

Oh heavens. People were not being hateful in the BMR thread, they were correcting misinformation. One thing I learned after being here a while is you are posting to a board with a LOT of people who actually know what they're talking about. If you're not sure, or haven't done the research but are interested in also knowing more, bump the thread so you can go back and read before you post.

I felt "jumped on" by others when I first started, then I started using the Search tool in the forums and google to learn more before I post.

I'm going out on a limb here and generalizing for MFP, but I haven't run into a single "hateful" person. Snarky maybe, but not hateful. If I could, I'd buy a round of drinks for you all for the awesome information I've gotten on this site. :drinker:

COWARDS who are afraid to stand up to people face to face where they could easily get their A** kicked are capable of coming online and saying what they please as they hide behind the computer screen in their mommy's basement where they live.
